Editor’s/Plates Notes Due to increased postage costs and toner, it is time to think about emailing magazines to those who wish. There will always be hard copies for those without emails and those that prefer hard copies. Other options such as reducing size of newsletter won’t change price much. Two-monthly newsletter will reduce costs by 50% but then it will be hard to notify of events and meeting minutes. I might mention the AGM. Most will, I believe take on the same positions except for the President who has served his two year stint. The Job really isn’t anything special, basically chair the meeting. There are no committees and there is nothing discussed behind closed doors. All ideas are put before the club members for a vote. The secretary prepares a draft minutes before the meeting with all mail and things that have come in during the month as well as any General Business. The President just looks at the headings and goes through the items. Only time the President has to do something is when any discussion start getting prolonged, repeated or overheated – the President Controls the discussion. It really is a rewarding job to be President of the CAVC.

Correction In the story on Koorawatha Show, I missed that the trophies were supplied by Café 104, Cowra

Hotel, Shannon’s and LT 131 Pizza. Thank you to all these businesses.

Mitsubishi

Marunouchi around 1890 (known as "Mitsubishi Field") The origin of Mitsubishi goes back to 1870 when the founder, Yataro Iwasaki, started a shipping firm with three aging steamships. Yataro's brother, son and nephew expanded the business into various fields during their respective terms as president and set the foundation of the Mitsubishi companies. After WWII, the original Mitsubishi organization was disbanded to become the independent companies they are today.

The Early Years The history of "Mitsubishi" parallels the story of modern Japan. The founder, Yataro Iwasaki was from the prefecture of Kochi on the island of Shikoku, which was the home of the powerful Tosa clan. He worked for the clan and distinguished himself in managing its Osaka trading operations. In 1870, he set up his own shipping company, Tsukumo Shokai, with three steamships chartered from the clan. This was the beginning of Mitsubishi. The company grew rapidly while undergoing a number of name changes including Mitsukawa Shokai, Mitsubishi Shokai, Mitsubishi Jokisen Kaisha (Mitsubishi Steamship Company), Yubin

Kisen Mitsubishi Kaisha (Mitsubishi Mail Steamship Company). Mitsubishi Mail Steamship Company inaugurated service to China and became the first Japanese company to open an overseas route. But the political winds shifted against Mitsubishi in the early 1880s, and the government sponsored the establishment of a competitor. The ensuing competition nearly bankrupted both companies. Yataro died of cancer in 1885 and his younger brother Yanosuke succeeded him as president of Mitsubishi. The feud between Mitsubishi and its competitor ended with a government-arbitrated merger the same year, which created Nippon Yusen--today's NYK Line. While competition was escalating on the sea, Mitsubishi was diversifying ashore. The company purchased the Yoshioka copper mine in Okayama and Takashima coal mine in Nagasaki. It leased and then purchased the Nagasaki Shipbuilding Yard from the government in 1884 and later engineered Japan's first domestically produced steel steamship there.

Diversification In 1885, Yanosuke Iwasaki succeeded his elder brother, Yataro, as head of the Mitsubishi organization.

Cowra Crankhandle Page 5

After the independence of NYK, Mitsubishi continued to grow and diversify under the autocratic leadership of Yanosuke. He bought up more mines to provide resources for Mitsubishi and Japan's growing industries. He also incorporated the Mitsubishi organizations as a modern corporation. Yanosuke set about rebuilding the organization around its mining and shipbuilding businesses. He expanded the organization's positions in banking, insurance and warehousing, and thus laid the foundation for future growth and development.

In 1890, he purchased 80 acres of the land next to the Imperial Palace now known as Marunouchi.

Decentralization Yataro's son, Hisaya, assumed the presidency in 1893. The University of Pennsylvania graduate restructured Mitsubishi to support increasingly diverse business operations. He set up divisions for banking, real estate, marketing, and administration, as well as for the original mining and shipbuilding businesses. Some of Hisaya's private investments are part of today's Mitsubishi companies. He purchased the Kobe Paper Mill, which is today's Mitsubishi Paper Mills, and he backed the founding of Kirin Brewery. His

cousin Toshiya founded Asahi Glass (current AGC), Japan's first successful manufacturer of plate glass. Hisaya insisted on the observance of firm ethical principles in business dealings. After the outbreak of WWI in 1914, he called on all the Mitsubishi employees to redouble their commitment to integrity and fairness. Philanthropy was a lasting emphasis for Hisaya. He donated to the city of Tokyo two expansive Japanese gardens - Rikugien and Kiyosumi-Teien, and established Toyo Bunko, a library for housing oriental works.

Modernization and Dissolution Koyata Iwasaki, the son of Yanosuke, took over the presidency from Hisaya in 1916 at the age of 38. Like Hisaya, he had studied abroad and was a graduate of Cambridge University. He led the Mitsubishi organization for nearly 30 years and played a pivotal role in shaping the development of Japanese industry. Under Koyata, Mitsubishi was modernized further as the divisions were incorporated into semiautonomous companies. Koyata steered Mitsubishi to leadership in such sectors as machinery, electrical equipment, and chemicals. The companies that later became Mitsubishi Heavy Industries developed automobiles, aircraft, tanks, and buses. And Mitsubishi Electric also became a leader in electrical machinery and in home appliances.

Cowra Crankhandle Page 6

The Iwasaki family relinquished some of its control over Mitsubishi through a public offering of shares in the core holding company. By the end of World War II, outside investors held nearly one-half of the equity. Koyata encouraged his managers and employees to stand above the xenophobia that swept Japan during the war years. "We count many British and Americans among our business partners," he reminded Mitsubishi executives shortly after the outbreak of hostilities. "They are our friends who have undertaken projects together with us and who have shared interests with us. Should peace come again, they

should again become our partners." After the war, the allied occupation forces demanded that Japan's big industrial groups disband. The last Mitsubishi president, Koyata Iwasaki, resisted conforming to the demands but unfortunately passed away in 1945. Mitsubishi Headquarters disbanded on September 30, 1946, and many of the Mitsubishi companies subsequently split into smaller enterprises.

A New Beginning The old Mitsubishi organization ended in 1946. The Mitsubishi holding company was dissolved while the trading house fragmented into hundreds of independent enterprises. Most of the Mitsubishi companies abandoned the name and emblem under pressure from the occupation forces. In 1952, the San Francisco Peace Treaty was concluded and Japan regained a welcome place in the international community. In 1954, more than 100 companies that had been part of the trading house, Mitsubishi Corporation, merged to re-establish that company. Similarly, the principal components of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries reunited in 1964. Mitsubishi companies that had abandoned that name after the war began using it and the three-diamond mark again. Japan was the scene of unprecedented economic growth in the 1950s and 1960s, and the Mitsubishi companies were very much a part of that growth in their established industries and in new ones. To commemorate the centennial anniversary of the founding of the first Mitsubishi Company, the Mitsubishi companies established the Mitsubishi Foundation in 1969. The companies are also active individually in supporting worthy causes through their own charitable foundations and in other ways

Passionfruit curd and coconut meringue jar Ingredients Passionfruit curd 1 cup fresh passionfruit pulp (approx. 12 passionfruit) 125g chilled butter, chopped ¾ cup caster sugar 4 egg yolks Biscuit crumb 200g packet shortbread biscuit, crushed ½ cup coconut flakes, toasted Meringue 1 cup caster sugar 3 eggs whites Method

1. For the passionfruit curd, strain passionfruit pulp through a sieve. Return 1/4 cup of seeds to strained juice (you will need ¾ cup total passionfruit).

2. Combine passionfruit, butter, sugar and egg yolks in a medium saucepan. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly for about 10-12 minutes, until thickens to coat the back of a wooden spoon (Do not boil or mixture will curdle). Transfer to a bowl and chill for 2 hours, until thickened.

stirring to dissolve sugar. Increase heat to medium and bring to boil. Cook, without stirring for about 6 minutes, until mixture reaches 110°C on a sugar thermometer.

5. Meanwhile, using an electric mixer beat egg whites to soft peaks. Beat in remaining sugar for 1 minute, until smooth. Gradually pour hot syrup into egg whites in a thin steady stream, beating constantly, until well combined. Continue beating on high speed for about 5 minutes, or until mixture cools to room temperature. Spoon into a piping bag fitted with 1cm star nozzle.

6. To assemble, spoon ¼ cup of biscuit crumb mix into the base of four 1 cup-capacity jars. Spoon in ¼ cup of curd. Pipe in an even layer of meringue about the same thickness as curd (about 1/4 cup). Repeat layers, finishing with meringue peaks.

7. Toast meringue topping with a kitchen blowtorch if you like or serve natural. Chill until ready to serve

Bob Grimshaw History Run 24th March

I learnt so much today, fantastic history tour of the Canowindra Surrounds. Visited two towns that no

longer exist, Murga and Burdett both of these towns were thriving during the 1930's. Murga area councils put on

Page 8: The Cowra Crankhandle€¦ · 04-04-2019  · He donated to the city of Tokyo two expansive Japanese gardens - Rikugien and Kiyosumi-Teien, and established Toyo Bunko, a library for

a picnic day in the 30's for Council employees and opened to the public, 3,500 people attended. The picnic ran for a good few years and stopped for the war. An attempt to restart after the war failed.

Murga had a Hotel, Post Office and general store. Only the old post office building remains. Beckett had a similar fate, Post Office, General Store, and a school. The school come and went as pupil numbers declined; as the numbers grew it was re-opened. This school building was shifted and remains at Canowindra Showground. First photos are from Collett Hill, better known as Blue Jacket Lookout. There were three Gold mines on the side of Blue Jacket, One called Blue Jacket and the other Red Jacket. I even learnt how the name Blue Jacket came about. Apparently the gold was inside a blue coloured rock - Gold with a Blue Jacket. Visiting the remains of a homestead that was attacked by Ben Halls Gang, One of the bushrangers was shot dead to which the Campbell that owned the homestead.

Only a small sample of the days notes written by Bob - sensational day. I tried to scan the notes so I could put Bob’s highlights in the magazine, if not highlights all of his notes. The program I have that recognises handwriting and converts it into typing, just will not do what it should. After a few hours I gave up. To be honest I could type the notes but I am just too tired after such a fantastic day.

A Huge thanks to Bob Grimshaw for putting on the event and all his work, Also to Rodney Bowd who organised the visit to the old Campbell Homestead. I am also informed that Pat put a considerable time into research. Thanks Pat – it was a fantastic turnout and great day. Joke – bit rude so read at your discretion For his birthday, little Johnny asked for a 10-speed bicycle. His father said, “Son, we’d give you one, but the mortgage on this house is $289,000 and your mother just lost her job. There’s no way we can afford it.”

The next day the father saw little Johnny heading out the front door with a suitcase. So he asked, “Son, where are you going?” Little Johnny told him, “I was walking past your room last night and heard you telling mom you were pulling out. Then I heard her tell you to wait because she was coming too. And I’ll be damned if I’m staying here by myself with a $289,000 mortgage and no f''n’ bike.” Submitted by John Toohey

Alvis Tour 30th March

Well wasn't that a stuff up by me, The Alvis Cars are tomorrow the 31st March. WE all make mistakes, seems getting more often for me as my age progresses. Not to worry, tomorrow is open day, so most will be there anyway to help out. One good thing is that the toilets were cleaned and floors vacuumed - so less to do on our next working bee, let’s just say it was a trial run.

Alvis Tour take two – right day + Open Day 31st March

YES -- it did happen after my mistake of yesterday. Beautiful cars and beautiful people. Was a fantastic afternoon, lots of laughs, lots of talk about clubs and club plates. Discussed inspections for a while. Vehicles in WA are inspected by DOT initially and that's it, responsibility of owner to ensure roadworthy. Vic. system is inspection once and then owner responsibility. NSW of course is annual inspections. Their thought was to have one system nationwide. We did agree however that a lot of things can become unroadworthy in twelve months. H & D plates explained that D was for any vehicle modified. The WA guy asked about rebodied cars, but replica cars are allowed on H plates providing they are an accurate replica including the engine and driveline. Soon as a different engine configuration is fitted it can no longer be H plated, but can be D plated. Long interesting talk about a guy that imported a replica Maserati from Argentina.- fitted with a later model Maserati

engine and therefore could not be registered on full registration - car found its way to Vic. and is on club plates - I still don't get how if it can't be registered on full registration, why should it be allowed on H or D plates. It was a Merv Seymour day "A FEEL GOOD DAY". Thanks to all the members that helped.

The “Ten Pound Poms” The Assisted Passage Migration Scheme was created in 1945 by the Chifley Government and its first Minister for Immigration, Arthur Calwell, as part of the “Populate or Perish” policy.. It was intended to substantially increase the population of Australia and to supply workers for the country’s booming industries. Australia required an

influx of 70,000 migrants a year to meet the demands. In return for subsidising the cost of travelling to Australia – adult migrants were charged only ten pounds sterling for the fare (hence the name) and migrant scheme children travelled free of charge – the Government promised employment prospects, affordable housing and a generally more optimistic lifestyle. Upon arrival, migrants were placed in basic migration hostels but the expected job opportunities were not always readily available.

Ten pounds takes you there

Page 11: The Cowra Crankhandle€¦ · 04-04-2019  · He donated to the city of Tokyo two expansive Japanese gardens - Rikugien and Kiyosumi-Teien, and established Toyo Bunko, a library for

Cowra Crankhandle Page 11

Coming to an end in 1982, the scheme reached its peak in 1969; during this year over 80,000 migrants took advantage of the scheme. The cost to migrants of the assisted passage was increased to £75 in 1973. While the term “Ten Pound Pom” is in common use, the scheme was not limited to migrants from the United Kingdom. Persons born in the Irish Free State or in the southern counties of Ireland prior to the establishment of the Republic of Ireland in 1949 were also classified as British subjects. In fact most British subjects were eligible and, at the time, that included not only those from the British Isles but also residents of British colonies such as Malta and Cyprus. Australia also operated schemes to assist selected migrants from other countries, notably the Netherlands (1951), Italy (1951), Greece (1952), West Germany (1952) and Turkey (1967). The only catch was that if you took up the offer you had to stay at least two years before deciding to return or you would have to pay the full fare home yourself. You also had to pass a health check and be under 45 years of age. If they chose to travel back to Britain, the cost of the journey was at least £120, a large sum in those days and one that most could not afford.

Arriving in Australia

Many thousands of “Ten Pound Poms” sailed from the United Kingdom on board P&O-Orient Line ships to their new life down under. Many of them thrived, quickly settling in to their new way of life in an exciting, easy-going, friendly new world. However, some were soon disillusioned and homesick for Britain. An estimated quarter of those British migrants decided that life in Australia was not for them and returned to the UK within the qualifying period. Half of these – the so-called “Boomerang Poms” – returned to Australia. A quote from Western Australia Now & Then: “As a ‘ten pound pom’ myself I can still remember the excitement of travelling to a new unknown land. Most of us who arrived are very grateful to Australia for the opportunity we were given. Speaking personally I would never dream of living anywhere but Australia. What about some ‘ten pound poms’ that people think are Australia, well try these names for a start: Hugh Jackman, The Bee Gees, Noni Hazlehurst, Jimmy Barnes, John Waters, John Farnham, Olivia Newton John, Kylie Minogue, Julia Gillard and Alan Bond.” SS Orcades

Nick Messinger ~ Fourth Officer SS Orcades 1964: “It was the bargain of the century – to sail aboard a P&O-Orient liner for a fare of just ten pounds. The Ten Pound Poms had hoped to escape post-war rationing and stiff, class-bound British society. In truth they were moving to a foreign country far from familiarity. It was a roll of the dice for all of them – and for P&O too! Life on board the ‘migrant ships’ could be fun, exciting and sometimes violent. Some folk came on board with a few quid in their pockets, drank themselves into a stupor, and then started fighting each other. On the Orient ships, we employed a ‘heavy-gang’: ten of the biggest and ablest able seamen and a burly master at arms, in order to break up the riots below decks in tourist class. With

the third or fourth officer at their head, blowing on his whistle, and calling for ‘order’, the heaving mass of pugilists would be given an ultimatum – ‘Stop fighting, proceed immediately to your cabins, or else!’ Invariably, the latter

Page 12: The Cowra Crankhandle€¦ · 04-04-2019  · He donated to the city of Tokyo two expansive Japanese gardens - Rikugien and Kiyosumi-Teien, and established Toyo Bunko, a library for

involved the subduing of the miscreants, who were then marched off to the brig, which was hot and cramped, and normally situated close to the engine-room exhaust fans. Next day they were on the bridge at noon for logging and punishment. If they had no funds, it was back to the brig for a few days. In the worst cases, they were landed at the next port of call, handed over to the customs police, and (eventually) repatriated.” Ten Pound Poms is a colloquial term used in Australia and New Zealand to describe British citizens who migrated to Australia and New Zealand after the Second World War. They were called that because they only had to pay £10 in processing fees to migrate to Australia and the Commonwealth arranged for assisted passage on chartered ships and aircraft. There are several folk etymologies for “Pommy” or “Pom”. The best-documented of these is that “Pommy” originated as a contraction of “pomegranate”. According to this explanation, “pomegranate” was Australian rhyming slang for “immigrant” (“Jimmy Grant”). Joke I met a magical fairy yesterday who said she would grant me one wish. "I wish to live forever," I said. "Sorry," said the fairy, "I'm not allowed to grant that particular wish." "Fine," I said, "then I want to die the day after Parliament is filled with honest, hard-working, bipartisan men and women who act only in the people's best interests!" "You crafty bastard," replied the fairy. Submitted by Ray Heilman

Portland Revisited 13th April

Such a great day - right from the start it became apparent that this day was to be something special. It got more interesting at McDonald's Car Park in Bathurst. Everyone having a shot at everybody else, the banter between George and Bob was hilarious. There were five Cars on the run from Bathurst to the museum in Portland. The pictures do not give credit to the volunteers that run the place. The Museum was very Special and the Volunteer even opened early for us to look around , it was very special. Particularly of interest were photos of Wayne in the Portland Band. See if you can pick Wayne out? The brass instrument is what Wayne played in the band, the actual instrument. The ladies showing us around did an exceptional job. Explained everything, there is a mechanical device for making socks, never seen anything like it. On leaving Portland we went to look at the house that Ray's father lived, Ray never lived there, by that time he was working in Cowra.

From Portland we headed off to Wallerawang for lunch. The $8.50 Chinese meal was purely superb, amongst the best Chinese I have ever consumed. After lunch Ray wanted to see another Family Home in Wallerawang and the rest of us said our goodbyes and headed off. The air conditioning in the Volvo 242gt playing up, working then not working, the working again. Day before I found a wire off the TX Valve, a couple of weeks ago found a bad connection at the fuses. The run was great because it gave me the opportunity to isolate the fault. Turned out to be the ignition switch, after starting and letting key go it would move just a touch to far past the contacts. Only just a touch, if I returned the switch by hand it wasn’t a problem. Besides the air conditioning the Volvo now feels like a Volvo should. It has always had zero torque, see a hill and it slows down. Turned out to be a mismatch with the gear on the distributor, It is a bit technical to explain, but simply one tooth clockwise is half a tooth out, one tooth anti-clockwise is also half a tooth out, pulling distributor in and out and moving timing belt a tooth I eventually found the correct spot. Dropped in the distributor and all timing marks lined up, even the rotor button, the magnets and the poles inside the distributor lined up for the first time. Over Mount Fitzgerald in 4th Gear, normally the Volvo would have to go back to third, if the revs not high enough back to second. What a pleasure to drive now that it has throttle response, you can actually feel it accelerate. Happy with car now, wouldn’t sell it before because I was embarrassed to let anyone drive it, so very gutless. It was a really great day, 360 kilometres round trip.

Joke Ralph returns from the doctor and tells his wife that the doctor has told him he has only 24 hours to live. Given this prognosis, Ralph asks his wife for sex. Naturally, she agrees, and they make love. About six hours later, the husband goes to his wife and says, 'Honey, you know I now have only 18 hours to live. Could we please do it one more time?' Of course, the wife agrees, and they do it again. Later, as the man gets into bed, he looks at his watch and realizes he now has only 8 hours left. He touches his wife's shoulder and asks, 'Honey, please - just one more time before I die ?' She says, 'Of course, dear.' And they make love for the third time. After this session, the wife rolls over and falls asleep. Ralph, however, worried about his impending death, tosses and turns until he's down to 4 more hours. He taps his wife, who rouses. 'Honey , I have only 4 more hours. Do you think we could....?' At this point the wife rolls over and says, 'Listen Ralph, I have to get up in the morning... ......you don't! Submitted by Ray Heilman

Working Bee Tuesday 9th

You may be aware that our monthly open days got so busy the club decided to make a weekday as a working bee. The working bee was on the same day, the first Tuesday of the month, the same day as the PIC-A-PARK run, Great fun but relatively poor attendance. So the working bee was moved to the second Tuesday of every month.

This month the President was missing in action, with all the work done it might be a good idea if the president stays away in future :) HUGE amount of work completed, big thanks to the members of the CAVC who show up religiously every working bee. Peter disconnected the power from wall in the Signal box. The wall is so badly eaten away by white ants it floats about, wall should be removed before next working bee. The wall is not original to the building for anyone concerned. Kevin straightened the BBQ trailer shed door and helped Ian prune the quick growing shrubs. Ron and John dis some weeding and oh my god does it look different. Dead shrubs removed and the garden cleaned up. Kevin Thrupp modern John Mooney Mercedes Ron Fazzari Modern Peter Hollier Modern Jokes Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, 'Why is the bride dressed in white?'' The mother replied, 'Because white is the colour of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life.' The child thought about this for a moment then said, 'So why is the groom wearing black?' Three boys are in the school yard bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, 'My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem, they give him $50.' The second boy says, 'That's nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on piece of paper, he calls it a song, they give him $100.' The third boy says, 'I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon, and it takes eight people to collect all the money!' An elderly woman died last month. Having never married, she requested no male pallbearers. In her handwritten instructions for her memorial service, she wrote, 'They wouldn't take me out while I was alive, so I don't want them to take me out when I'm dead.' Submitted by John Toohey
