Derry singer Nadine Coyle is bouncing back from her flop solo
album by writing songs for superstars Celine Dion and Aretha
Franklin. The Girls Aloud stars first solo single, Insatiable,
failed to make an impact in the U.K. charts last year (Nov10), and
her album of the same name didnt fare any better - limp-ing in at
number 47.The singer has stayed out of the spotlight following the
al-bums poor performance, and she is now concentrating on writing
new tracks for some of the worlds most famous stars. She told The
Sun: Im work-ing on a Celine Dion project

that. And I wrote another song for my album with a great producer
and he contacted me saying Aretha Franklin wanted to try my song.

recently dismissing Cheryl and the Girls Aloud gang as work
colleagues, Nadine insisted she was proud of the groups success and

Carol Service on the Walls is taking place on December 19 at 7pm on
the walls opposite First Derry Presbyterian Church. Following the
success of last years event, where approximately 300 people braved
the cold and icy conditions to attend the Carol Service, organizers
have decided to make this an annual event. The Carol Service is
being organized by Rev David Latimer and Fr Canny with support from
Derry City Council Community Relations Officers. It is open to
everyone in the city to come along to sing Carols and get into the
festive spirit. The event will give people the opportunity to take
time out from the shopping and organising to reflect on the essence
of Christmas and its religious and spiritual significance. Most
people get caught up in the hysteria and buying of gifts and
actu-ally forget that Christmas is about celebrating the birth of
Christ, the carol service will give people the opportu-nity to
reconnect with Christmas. For further information about the event
please contact Rev David Latimer at First Derry Presbyterian

As Derry gears up for the dual celebra-tions of City of Culture
and the 400th anniversary of the citys historic walls in 2013, the
building at the heart of the citys life is set to undergo dramatic
in-ternal renovations alongside the external makeover which is
nearing completion.External works have seen restoration of the
stonework, roofs, windows and stained glass of the iconic building,
as well as the famous Guildhall Clock. Throughout the on-going
external works life within the historic building continued
uninterrupted. Council staff and elected members worked through any
disrup-tions to ensure the wonderful building was open to the
public and services were delivered as usual and for as long as
pos-sible.Now, staff and elected members are busy making
preparations for some of the big-gest internal renovations and
rearrange-ment of services in the lifetime of the building. To
facilitate works and internal changes to services, both the
Guildhall and Harbour Museum will now close to the public expected
to re-open early 2013. Interim service arrangements are in place to
ensure minimal disruption to the public.
Colin Sharp, Superintendent of the Guildhall (pictured with
Mayor De-venny) officially closed the gates to the public with
services relocated until fur-ther notice. The Mayoral Office will
be relocated to Derry City Council Offices, Monthly Council
Meetings will now take place at the Great Hall at Magee Univer-sity
and Committee Meetings will take place at Derry City Council
Offices. The District Registrars Office for Births, Death, Marriages

Many weight loss diets promise to help you lose weight quickly.
Often, these diets focus on short-term results and dont work in the
long term. They may also be bad for your health. Here are five
reasons to avoid them:Many diets, especially crash diets, involve
dramatically reduc-ing the number of calories you consume. You may
lose weight quickly but you risk losing muscle rather than fat.
Crash diets make you feel very unwell and unable to function
properly, says dietitian Ursula Arens. Because they are
nutritionally unbal-anced, crash diets can lead to long-term poor
health, including eating disorders. Some diets recommend cutting out
certain foods, such as meat, fish, wheat or dairy products. Cutting
out certain food groups
altogether could prevent you from getting important nutrients
and vitamins, which your body needs to function properly. Some diets
are very low in carbohydrates (such as pasta, bread, and rice),
which are an essential source of energy. While you may lose weight
on these types of diets, theyre often high in protein and fat,
which can make you ill. It has been suggested that the high protein
content of these diets dampens the appe-tite and feelings of
hunger, says Arens. Many low-carbohydrate diets allow you to eat
foods that are high in saturated fat, such as butter, cheese and
meat. Too much saturated fat can raise your cholesterol and
increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.Detox diets are
based on the idea that toxins build up in the body and can be
removed by eating, or not eating, certain things.
However, theres no evidence that toxins build up in our bodies.
If they did, we would feel very ill. Detox diets do not work, says
Arens. They are, in effect, a form of modified fasting. Some fad
diets are based on eating a single food or meal, such as cabbage
soup. Others make far-fetched claims, for example that eating
grapefruit can help burn body fat. Often, there is little or no
evidence to back up these claims. If followed over long pe-riods,
these diets are very unbalanced and bad for your health, says
Arens. You may lose weight in the short term, but its much better
to lose weight gradually and to be healthy.
Build exercise into your routineMany of us think we need to
spend hours working up a sweat at the gym to stay fit. However,
while intense workouts are beneficial, they can also be extremely
off-putting and are not strictly necessary. Research shows that
regular daily activity could be more effective than spo-radic
workouts, so rather than allot-ting a specific exercise time a day,
try peppering your day with gentle bits of activity such as taking
the stairs instead of the lift, doing the housework, or walking to
the shops at lunch.
We all know that eating fresh, homemade produce is good for us,
yet many of us are far too tired to be whipping up a culinary
masterpiece after a hard days work. However, rather than falling
into the trap of relying on shop bought ready meals which may be
lacking in nutritional value, try making your own healthy versions
instead. By cooking up healthy meals in large batches at the
weekend, you can be sure to have plenty of healthy choices in your
freezer for those days when youre too lazy to cook.

the PSNI. I would also appeal local business-es dealing in scrap
metal to ensure that they are aware of the source of the metal
before purchasing it and to keep a register of all transactions
relating to these purchases. These metal thefts are not victimless
crimes with schools, businesses and householders having to redirect
much needed resources into repairs and replacement. The recession is
believed to have given rise to a growing spate of scrap metal
thefts. The scrap metal trade can be lucrative and items are
normally sold for cash payment. Councillor Conway appealed for the
public to be aware of the money involved.

The family of a former American WWII fighter pilot have made an
emotional return to Derry to mark the opening of an exhibition
featuring the aircraft he ditched in a Donegal bog in 1941.The two
daughters of Roland Bud Wolfe and 12 other family members travelled
from across America on a personal pilgrimage to visit the former
fighter base - now the City of Derry Airport - where their father
was tempo-rarily based in 1941.While here, they unveiled a plaque
in the terminal to commemorate 133 (Eagle) RAF squadron which was
composed entirely of US volunteer pilots, including their father.
They also viewed a display case containing the tail wheel and other
exhibits from their fathers Spitfire which was excavated this
summer from a mountain bog near Gleneely in County Donegal. The
licensed excavation of this aircraft, as part of a forthcoming BBC
(NI) series entitled Dig WW2, attracted a lot of media atten-tion.
The fascinating history of Flying Officer Wolfes subsequent
internment in the Cur-ragh and immediate escape and the war time
donation of this aircraft to the RAF by British MP and successful
Canadian retail mogul Mr Garfield Weston has made headlines around
the world. The story went global with the recent fir-ing, by the
Irish Defence Force, of one of the Browning machine guns recovered
from the crash site. In just 24 hours, over 1,100,000 people read
about this historic event on the BBC website.Speaking at the
unveiling Buds daughters, Barbara Kucharczyk and Betty Wolfe said
they were delighted to come to Derry and visit their fathers former
RAF fighter base. The Airport management toured the party around the
airfield pointing out the former WW2 runways and buildings their
father would have seen during his time there in 1941. He parachuted
from his stricken aircraft on 30th November 1941 when it developed
engine trouble while on a convoy patrol. The family also met and
talked with local Eg-linton resident Mr Brian McGlinchey, whose
brother Nat corresponded with Bud Wolfe for many years after the
war. Nats support for 133 Eagle squadron saw him accorded honorary
membership of the squadron shortly before his death and this
lifelong devotion was also remembered on the plaque. The plaque was
funded by Mr Galen Weston - son of Mr Garfield Weston, who was
delighted to hear of the recovery of one of his fathers donated
Spitfires. The 30th November was the 70th anniver-sary of the crash
and it was very poignant for
the family members to visit the remote crash site in Donegal,
said local aviation histo-rian Jonny McNee who traced the daughters
earlier in the year to seek their approval for the project.Mr McNee
paid tribute to everyone at the Airport who assisted to arrange
this day which was clearly an emotional one for the family. The
staff and management have provided a genuine warm welcome to the
family of a for-mer flier. The unveiling of the plaque shows their
commitment to remember the history and origins of the City of Derry
Airport.

A nation on its economic knee-caps rose to its feet and jumped
high into the air as the Republic of Ireland football team
qualified for its first major international tournament in 10 whole
years. Ah those were the days, days when grown men and women danced
in the streets and cried into their drinks as the dream ended.
Commiserations to Esto-nians, but believe me we know that feeling
only too well. But as always its the taking part that counts and we
are guaran-teed three big games next June
Big things come in small packagesNewly installed and diminutive
Irish President made the city his first port of call in the North
of Ireland.Michael D Higgins visit a few weeks back came hot on the
heels of a special visit by his predecessor Mary McAleese so Derry
has been spoiled of late as far as presidential visits are
concerned. He was in the city to attend the All-island School Choir
of the Year awards at the Citys Millennium Forum.I am delighted to
join you here tonight and to have had the privilege of enjoying
such beautiful choral performances. Hans Christian An-derson said
that where words fail, music speaks, Mr Higgins said. The president
paid tribute to all the 46 choirs who entered the annual contest
run by charity Co-operation Ireland and RTE.It has been inspiring
to witness the final performances but every participating choir in
this competi-tion has shown the wonderful talent and teamwork that
enabled each and every one of them to represent their school to the
very, very best of their ability.Surely a people that can sing
together in harmony is a wonderful and great omen for the future,
he said.
Thank you for the musicEvery child in the city will be given a
free musical instrument as part of the UK City of Culture
program. The initiative will be the first of its type in the world
and 9,000 children under the age of 13 will be given the
opportunity to learn a musical instrument. It is hoped that the
initiative will help further develop the citys reputation as a hub
for musical creativity. The Childrens Music Promise will be the
largest project rolled out during 2013 and will include the chance
for children to show-case their work.Garbhan Downey, director of
marketing and communications, said the project had already
at-tracted international attention. He said: We are already getting
a lot of interest as a model of ex-cellence on how to teach
children music and it is being looked at by everybody. It could
change the way music is taught in the curriculum. Now maybe we will
have a whole new crop of Danas, Undertones, Nadines, Joe Lockes,
Peter Cun-nahs the list goes on.
Burning ambitionSadly, for some, the only ambition is to burn
things. Take the burn-ing of the poppy wreaths, grabbed from the
War Memorial and ceremonially torched at Free Derry Wall by members
of the local intelligentsia. What is really going through their
minds? These are guys who couldnt tell you one jot about their own
history, never mind provide any cogent argument that would attempt
to explain their actions. Its not the actions of dispossessed youth
either its the actions of ill brought up thugs who can see nothing
important other than wrack and ruin. And when you think that their
adult heroes class placing a bomb outside the City Culture Offices
as a big blow for Irish Freedom, then it makes you wonder where
these people are going to end up. Prison no doubt.
Reason to be cheerful!to set fire to an Irish passion dampened
by job losses and European and English bailouts. Even Thierry
Henrys Harlem Globetrotting two years ago now seems a distant
memory. For the city and surrounding areas publicans will be
toasting the prospect of three bumper occasions and maybe more if
the Republic progress in the European Championships. But they will
be content with any show at all following the darkest years in the
pub trade locally. I remember last watching the
Republic in action in my local Mary Bees now sadly gone in an
unforgiving economy. There were even fries served and an electric
atmosphere for each match. Now a new generation get to take part in
all the carnival that surrounds the Republic being in-volved in a
major tournament. It gives the nation a lift and fosters an
interest in sport among the young so the spin offs socially are
immense. So well done Trap-pies Army may the roads to Poland and
Ukraine rise to you!

Derry is now well and truly Switched On with the Stormont
Culture Minister, Carl N Chuiln officially launching the Derry Live
Big Screen site. In good time for both the London Olympics and the
Derry City of Culture 2013 celebrations, it is situated in Waterloo
place in Londonderry and it is designed to animate this area and to
contribute to a shared sense of space.Speaking as it was switched
on, the NI Execu-tive Minister said: This is the second live site
and will allow us to come together in celebra-tion to enjoy
cultural and sporting events. I am sure that this live site will
have as much success as the Belfast Live Site and bring people
together to enjoy events via the big screen, she said. When the
[Olympic] Games begin next July, this site will provide the
opportunity for all to watch and support our local sporting stars
as they compete in the London 2012 Games, the Sinn Fein Minister
added. She also underlined her support for the partner-ship between
Derry City Council, the BBC and local cultural organisations that
have all worked together to regenerate the city centre. It supports
much of the work undertaken by the Council, by ILEX and DSD and by
the Tourist Board which aims to create attractive places where
people want to be, she contin-
ued.I would also like to acknowledge CultureNI, particularly the
30 trainees in the Creative Industries, who have helped to develop
content for the site which tells the stories of some of our
sporting heroes and showcases some of the world class cultural
projects taking place here to celebrate the London 2012 Games.

provides me with a unique opportunity to engage with the public and
welcome the season of good-will to the city.Event organizer with
Derry City Council, Gerry McCol-gan said the event was one of the
highlights of the citys social calendar and a great family friendly
occasion. Every year the Switch On attracts huge crowds and its a
really great event. The Guildhall Square comes alive with festive
cheer and when Santa arrives the atmo-sphere is amazing. We have a
full line up of musical entertainment organised for the evening for
all the fam-ily. The Switch On marks the start of a range of
festive events for visitors and residents in the city in the run up
to Christmas, he said. Each year the event attracts several thousand
children and their parents to Guildhall Square.
When Santa came to town
The man himself makes his dramatic entrance to Guildhall Square
while the fun and frolics continued with the ugly sisters and one

scared looking Prince Charming.

Everything you need for Christmas...
Christmas Shopping at Lisnagelvin
This years Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at St Columbs
Cathedral will take place on Sunday December 18 with all proceeds
going to the Mayors chosen charities, the Foyle Branch of the MS
Society and Parkinsons UK.The service is usually held on the Sunday
before Christmas and is a tradition which began in Eng-land
stretching back over 100 years. The Nine Lessons trace the history
of salvation from the Creation of the world throughout the Old
Testa-ment to the Incarnation itself and culminates in the
Christmas Gospel of St John Chapter 1.The Very Rev Dr William
Morton, Dean of Derry is encouraging people from across the city to
join the celebration:The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a
very traditional part of Christmas in the Anglican Church. You
might be more familiar with the service than you realise as its the
same format as BBC2s Kings College Cambridge service which is
broadcast every Christmas Eve. The carols may vary but are chosen
to link with readings and we are very fortunate to have the
Cathedrals choir of Boys and Gentlemen rendering several choral
items.. It is a very special celebration and we really hope that
people from across the city will join us in celebrationThose
attending the service in St Columbs Cathedral will be treated to
classics such as internationally renowned Once in Royal Davids
City. The hymn has special connections to the cathedral and the
city as it was written by Cecil Frances Alexander who married
William Alexan-der who was to become Bishop of Derry and Ra-phoe
from 1867-1896. They lived in the Bishops Palace opposite the
Courthouse and she penned many classic verses including All Things
Bright and Beautiful and There is a Green Hill far Away. She wrote
the poem, which was later set to music, as a way to help teach her
godchildren the Christian faith. We have several factors to thank
for her poems
becoming internationally recognised and cel-ebrated as hymns.
Cecil Frances moved in quite literary circles and her involvement
with the Ox-ford Movement at a time of great change in the
accessibility of print meant that her writing was published. The
mid eighteen hundreds was also a time of prolific hymn writing and
all these factors combined lead to her words becoming legendary
down through history and across the world.St Columbs Cathedral is
understandably proud of Cecil Frances Alexander and her connection
to the City, an original copy of her book of Hymns for Little
Children published in 1848 is housed in the Cathedral.Mayor
Alderman Maurice Devenney says:It is magnificent to hear Cecil
Frances Alexan-ders words ring out in the Cathedral, it makes the
Nine Lessons & Carols service even more special. It is a
wonderful service, capturing the spirit of the Christmas season and
bring-ing people from throughout the city together. I would like to
express my sincere thanks to Dean Morton, Cathedral Staff and
Choirs for their work throughout the year and in particular for
arranging this wonderful service and supporting the hard work and
dedication of the Foyle Branch of the MS Society and Parkinsons
UK.The Nine Lessons and Carols service begins at 7.30pm on Sunday
18th December and is a free event, however donations are most
welcome and all proceeds will go directly to the Mayors Charities.
A preview of the Cathedral Choir can be heard on
www.stcolumbscathedralchoir.com; a copy of their CD All Things
Bright & Beauti-ful The Hymns of Cecil Frances Alexander, would
make a wonderful Christmas gift and is available at the
Cathedral. For full details of the citys Christmas season events

Unfortunately when it comes to weight loss there really is no
quick fix. The miracle shakes and wonder pills do not provide the
sustainable weight loss so many crave - likewise, the fad diets
serve no purpose save to LOW-ER our metabolic rate even further
which is entirely counter-productive. So what is the answer? The
problem is further complicated because one-size does not fit all -
we each have different requirements, problems and needs to be
addressed. This is where many of the commercial diets fail to meet
the needs of individuals in terms of achieving a sustainable weight
loss. So, a tailor-made nutrition plan which takes into account
your own daily routine, likes and dislikes, allergies and
intolerances, exercise and training needs makes perfect sense. A
large proportion of my clients simply are
not eating enough, meal-skipping in an attempt to shed weight
which I know from experience simply does not work the oppo-site in
fact as the body actually stores fat to protect itself against a
period of starvation. Dehydration is another massive problem most
people think that they do consume enough water each day FACT the
majority do not! Water is the catalyst for so many reactions within
the body and effective weight loss / management will not be
possible without it. Drinking cold water itself actually raises our
metabolic rate and its free! When a client sees what they eat each
day written down in a food diary many are shocked we have become so
reliant on processed, refined and convenience food in our daily
diets that the obesity problem is rapidly growing out of control.
When I go on to explain how nutritionally inadequate these diets
are the true reality hits home! As the old saying goes you are what
you eat most of us simply need some re-education and guidance. Book
an initial consultation today it could be an hour that changes the
rest of your life !Statistics for the Before and After pictures

Explain the background to the set up of the business and the
motivation for set up?
Cormac and I were colleagues in Brendan Kearneys office a number
of years ago. He left in 2001 to establish his own practice McKeone
and Co and asked me to join him a few months ago. I had always
wondered what it would be like to run my own practice and decided
to rise to the challenge. Having worked for someone else for so
many years the flexibility and autonomy that being my own boss
would afford me appealed to me.
What is your own background?
Since qualifying as a solicitor I worked with Brendan Kearney
and Co and was a partner there for almost 20 years. I was educated
at Thornhill College and Queens University Belfast. The type of
work I did was mainly family law and litigation, but I have
considerable experience in many other aspects of the law having
worked in a very busy general practice for so long. Cormac has 10
years as a sole prac-titioner, during which time he has established
a solid client base.
What are the main services that the business offers in the
area?
Cormac and I offer a truly fully comprehensive legal service for
clients. We both have skills in different aspects of the law which
complement each other-Family/Matrimonial LawPersonal Injury
claimsConveyancing/Private client commercial
workWills/ProbateEstate Management/TrustsEmployment LawCriminal

In the present climate do you view quality of service as
essential?
Quality of service is quintessential to running a successful
business in any climate not to talk of the current climate.
Ultimately, clients are free to decide who they wish to represent
them and are entitled to the highest standards of service possible
which is what we aim to provide. At the end of the day there is no
better advertisement for
your business than a client who feels that you have done your
best for them in the circumstances of their particular case.
What are the main challenges for your business and how do you
overcome them?
Clearly these are difficult times economically and that in
itself is a challenge, however hard work and a conscientious
approach combined with self belief goes a long way to help to
overcome the challenges that we all face. This combined venture is
in its infancy and it is about establishing McKeone McGilloway as a
practice with a reputation for reliability and excellent quality of
service. A bit of luck helps too - then again you generate your own
luck- isnt that what they say?
What are the chief qualities that customers are looking for in a
legal business at the minute?
My experience to date as a solicitor in Derry has taught me that
if a client feels that you have a sincere interest in the best
possible outcome for them in their case, you treat them with
respect and are straightforward and direct in your dealings with
them and provide them with value for money then they will be
content with the service. In matrimonial cases, I truly believe
that the ability to listen and process what you are hearing in a
sympathetic and humane way is vital. Dealing with their business
expeditiously and without delay is also clearly fundamental.
What advice would you give to people looking to set up in their
own business?
With regards to anyone considering opening a business I would
say follow your instinct. If your gut feeling is to take the leap
go for it unless of course there are very obvious reasons why you
shouldnt. Having said that usually where there is a will there is a
way! Clearly, a degree of caution should be exercised in terms of
not being entirely reckless. Another thing to remember is that very
often opportunities in life appear when we need them to, not
necessarily when we want them to - so never reject an opportunity
as completely out of hand without some consideration. Be honest and
have integrity in your dealings with others and, where possible,
keep things simple.

BUSINESS
If you have ordered goods with a specific request that you
receive them in time for Christmas and the supplier of the goods
fails to get them to you in time for Christmas then they are in
breach of contract and you would be entitled to a refund of any
monies paid in respect of the goods .If the retailer refuses you a
refund you could begin legal actionMany of us purchase goods on the
internet especially in the run up to Christmas and with postal
delays etc you may not receive them on time. You do have protection
in this situ-ation. You have seven working days from receipt of
your goods to return them by cancelling the order even if they are
not faulty and even if you did not specify that you must have them
by Christmas.Just remember that you only have seven days from
receipt of the goods to cancel and return for your
refund.Goods-what are my rights? Regardless of the time of year
your rights in relation to goods you have purchased remain the
same. They must be of satisfactory qualityThey should fit the
descriptionThey must be fit for purpose-in other words they must be
capable of doing what they are supposed to do.If a retailer is not
truthful in his/her description of goods
then technically they are committing a criminal offence. What can
I do if I feel my rights are infringed? Do not delay too long
before rejecting the goods or com-plaining about them as the
retailer could argue that you have accepted them and used them. The
retailer may not agree with you that the goods are faulty and may
want to re-fer them to the manufacturer. Retailers of course are
entitled to seek proof of purchase from you. You do not necessarily
need to produce a receipt-you may be able to get proof from your
bank that a payment was processed or it may be a mat-ter of
evidence in court if you paid in cash and you had no witness there
at the time of purchase. If there is a clear indication that goods
are not of satisfac-tory quality or not fitting the description or
not fit for the purpose then you are entitled to a refund but you
may be happy with a replacement or even having them repaired. If the
retailer refuses to cooperate with you then you can go to court on
the point. It is the responsibility of the retailer (not the
manufacturer) to resolve any problem directly with you since it was
you and the retailer who entered into the contract in the first
place.

WARNING!WINTER 2011
COMING SOON
North Wests Longest Established Merchants
A polar bear on the banks of The Foyle may seem far fetched but
Derry is being warned to brace itself for another tough
winter.James Madden, long range forecaster for Exacta
Weather says the city should prepare itself for a winter similar
to the that of the past 2 years
because of changes to a number of key variables that dictate our
weather. He says this winter is likely to rival perhaps surpass,
the winter of 2010/11 when tem-
peratures reached a 30 year low and ice formed on the Foyle.
I expect the 2011-2012 winter to follow a similar pattern in
terms of how November and December was in 2010 for the vast
majority of this winter he says.it will be exceptionally cold and
snowy with well below average temperatures.Mr Madden says a number
of factors including low solar activity, alterations to the Gulf
Stream and the influence of La Nina (the cooling influence of the
Pacific Ocean near the equator) and the impact of volcanic ash are
coming together and culminating in a harsh winter prediction. He
says its vital people start preparing now to mini-mise high energy
bills.

The Life ofOReilly

It was in 2008 that then 16-year-old St Marys College student
Kayleigh OReilly first hit the headlines locally. Back then she
beat off thousands of hopefuls to become one of six finalists in
the 2008 Sugar/Rimmel London Model Competition - an annual event,
which scours the UK to find the teen face of Sugar
magazine.Kayleigh didnt win, but she impressed, really
impressed.Judges Annabel Brog, Editor of Sugar, and Ellis, director
of modelling agency, Independent, said they chose Kay-leigh for her
striking natural good looks.Ellis said: Kayleigh is a true Irish
beauty with her fair freckled skin, auburn hair and well
proportioned features. Kayleigh is a pretty girl and has a keen
hunger for the fashion business. The mental attitude of a model is
as im-portant as the physical attributes - they go hand in hand to
make a successful model.Kayleighs journey in the fashion industry
had begun in earnest and there were even greater things to come for
the Creggan beauty. The name Kayleigh OReilly was set to go
international with her participation in the 2009 Miss Earth contest
in the Phillipines. She made it into the last 16 a first for a UK
model. With a down-to-earth attitude and a natural charm, Kayleigh
has never looked back.
When did you first realise that the modelling industry could
provide you with a career?I first realised this when I used to
watch my bigger cousin do the bridal shows, then my chance came
when I was spotted in Manchester by a model scout and was then
entered into the Sugar Rimmel London search for a model competition
and made it to the final 6 from 11,000 girls.
When you were a child what did you dream of being? When I was a
child I always dreamt of being an actress or a model. My mum would
still say to this day that I would strut my stuff when I was
younger around the liv-ing room in her heels and dresses.
When did you first get on a catwalk and how did you feel? My
very first catwalk was seven years ago when I was 13 years old in
the City Hotel and I will never forget how nervous I was.
Why do you think that modelling has taken off locally? I believe
the modelling took off locally because their was a good market for
it in Derry City and then I went on to Belfast and started doing
Belfast fashion week and things seemed to have been getting better
as I went along.
Who has been your biggest influence to date? It would definitely
have to be my mummy. She has been the one that has completely
supported me and gave me every opportunity and just been my
backbone through-out. She never once pressured me, she just
constantly believed in me and made me feel like I was worth it and
I could accomplish my dreams.
How would you sum up the industry? The modelling industry in one
word to me would have to be Bold. Its straight forward, cut throat
and very competitive. Its as if you are in the fast lane on the
mo-torway there is no way you can go but forward if you are
determined. But besides making it sound awful there are good
points. It makes you grow individually as a person in confidence
and goals. You realise the more you go at
it the more you accomplish and achieve and it is very
rewarding.
Could you tell us about your success at Miss Earth? Miss Earth
is definitely one of my most treasured memories. I still to this
day have to take a few seconds and pinch myself when I remember
some of the days and things I have experienced. It was definitely
hard work - it was constant, no sleep, no play time its work, work,
and work. People think that being a beauty queen must be the
easiest job smiling and posing. But there is so much thats unseen.
When I was there, I travelled to at least 20 different countries
and many more individual towns. So you can imagine we were
constantly on the go with barely any sleep. But the sights and
people we then met and seeing how we made their days made it so
worth while. While I was away I was nothing other than myself - I
was fun upbeat and just so thankful for the experience I was given,
so I made the most of it and made so many friends and I believe
thats why I did have a good suc-cess in the pageant. Coming 7th is
the best that England, Scotland, Ireland or Wales has ever done in
the lifetime of Miss Earth. I was completely overwhelmed and I am
still thankful.
Describe your daily routine in modelling. My Agency Is Compton
Models In Dublin. My daily routine would be getting the 4:15am bus
from Derry to Dublin, to see my agent who then gives me feedback
since my last visit. I would collect my portfolio and cards and
then make my way around Dublin with a map on foot to go to the
castings I have for that day. I wear skinny jeans and a white vest
top, fresh hair and make up. You go in and they ask you to catwalk
maybe a few poses and they usually take pictures then get back to
your agent if you are successful. If so you go to your location get
hair and make up and do what you are there for whether its catwalk
or a shoot or even video shoot. You are simply a mannequin and you
do your job and then leave with new photos and most of the times
new friends and new memories.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced in the modelling
business? My biggest challenge to date would have to be working with
Compton. Because my mum and dad have jobs, I

Page 35LIFE & STYLEhave had to hike down there myself and
just run about and find everywhere I needed to go myself and
learning that I can do things independently. It was very
intimidat-ing at the start but once you get the hang of it and have
the determination, I believe you just do it.
The Top Model competition is the biggest of its kind in the
North West. What advice would you give models thinking of
entering?
The advice I give to myself and would give to the girls is
simply believe in yourself. If you say you cant do it then you
wont. Be open-minded, go for it and give it your all. They do say
that we have the most beautiful women in the world and I believe it
and I think if you are thinking about it, why not give it a go? The
worst thing that could happen is you having an experience at it,
and thats not even bad. So go for it!
In your view what are the most important characteris-tics to
make a success of modelling?
You would have to be hard working, thick-skinned, de-termined
and up for new experiences and new places.
What is your favourite label and what is the most ex-pensive
piece of fashion you own?
My favourite label to look at would have to be Caval-lie Im
saying look at because I could ever afford it but maybe one day! To
be totally honest I dont have anything expensive, Im not a rich
girl. Im a high street type of girl, but I definitely love making
my own outfits and just replica everything thats on the catwalks
from local stores and even some charity shops.
What are your hopes for the future?
My hopes for the future would be to keep going on with my love
for modelling and maybe compete in Miss World or Miss Universe and
help make a wee difference and do my City proud!
Top Tips for aspiring models Be Confident! Have a fresh face and

it! You have to be thick skinned and dont take knocks personally -

Page 36 LIFE & STYLE
There are a whole lot of different skirt lengths out there,
which can make the whole process of finding one rather trying. Not
only that, but skirts are made out of different materials, have
different cuts, and different embellishments that makes buying
process even more confus-ing. How do you know which ones will look
good on you?Finding the Right LengthThe first thing that you should
focus on when you go skirt shopping is the length of the skirt. A
good general rule to keep in mind is that if you are over the age
of 35 (or younger, in some cases), a mini skirt is no longer a
fashionable option for you. The shorter the skirt does not mean the
sexier the skirt; you can find a sexy skirt at a more suitable
length, such as a well cut knee length skirt that hugs your hips
and comes to a nice taper right above your knees.TOP TIP: The more
basic the skirt, the better, especially the older you are. Stay
away from any sort of low waist skirts, ruffles and pleats. These
will only make you seem immature and will ruin any classic or
modern look you were going for.Skirt Cuts and FabricsThe most
flattering cut of skirt for any body type is the good old a-line
skirt. The a-line works for almost anyone as it will help define the
waist area, hide any trace of a tummy, conceal the hips and thighs
you may want to hide, and it will balance almost any body shape.Try
to stay away from any sort of sarong style skirts as they can make
your tummy look more pooch-like than it is, and definitely keep
your hands off any mini or micro-mini skirts if they are no longer
age appropriate or flattering to your body type.Choose the Right
SizeThere are some skirts out there that are made to cling and hug
to every part of your body, but these skirts will probably not be
the most flat-tering to you. You want to wear a skirt that will not
bunch as you sit, stand and move through-out your day. You also
dont want a skirt that will become tight and confining. Find the
right size skirt that will nicely hug you around the hip area but
will allow you the freedom of movement. Can I Wear a Denim Skirt?Who
doesnt love a great pair of jeans? While some may argue that denim
skirts are no longer fashionable, we tend to disagree! A dark wash
of denim can easily become sophisticated and sexy if paired up with
a pair of heels and a button down jacket. Throw on a scarf, and you
definitely have the business casual look going on.You can wear
denim skirts out to diner, on a date, or you can choose a lighter
wash of den-im and pair it with a trendy t-shirt or a sweater and
boots for a more laid back look.
