The event was co- sponsored by the American Red Cross and the North Carolina Chapter of the Korean Vietnam War Veterans Association. Robert Callendar was the representative from the American Red Cross and Tae Hyun Chun as President represented the NC Chapter of the Korean Vietnam War Veterans. The event was the result of many meetings and hard- work between Mr. Callendar and Mr. Chun who decided to have a joint ceremony with U.S. veterans and Korean veterans to com- memorate soldiers on Veteran’s Day. The history of Veteran’s Day begins at the end of World War I, which was on November 11 at 11:00am. This day was originally cel- ebrated as Armistice Day. Then on October 8, 1954, President Eisenhower proclaimed it Veteran’s Day by Executive Order. America honors and respects its soldiers and veterans more highly than any other country. First of all, the U.S. spends more on it’s mili- tary than any other country in the world, at 40.2% of the world’s overall military spend- ing. The next highest country to spend on it’s military is China at 7.9%, then comes England at 3.8%, and then Japan and Russia are tied at 3.7%. Even with these four coun- tries combined, they still spend less than half of what the U.S. spends. Another example of how much America honors, respects, and values the military can be seen in how the bodies of fallen sol- diers are treated. Although it has been over 60 years since the Korean War ended, the U.S. continues to try to negotiate with North Korea to return the bodies of U.S. soldiers who died there during the Korean War. In addition, it is U.S. custom that the President greet the bodies of fallen soldiers when they are returned home from overseas. There are 23 million veterans in the U.S; 770,080 vet- erans in North Carolina; and 54,254 in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. In addition, the State of North Carolina spends $3.4 billion on veteran services per year. The November 11 Veteran’s Day celebration at the Asian Herald Library began with 12 high school students in the Young Marine Corps march- ing in step and carrying the U.S. and Korean flags. Although they were young students, they were very mature and serious about be- ing soldiers. Their demeanor and respect for the event recalls the very apt Marine saying of “A Few Good Men,” which I believe in- deed they will become in the future. After the young marines brought out the flags, there was a moment of silence to respect the soldiers who paid the ultimate price for their country and for freedom. Then the American National Anthem, The Star Spangled Ban- ner, was played, followed by the singing of the Korean National Anthem by the Korean Veterans in attendance. Those who sang the Korean National Anthem sang with much emotion and it was clear that the memories of their home country were still near and dear to them even though they now live far away. Next Robin Callanhan, a woman who served in the Marines, spoke about what life was like to be a soldier in the marines and how proud she was to be such a soldier. Those who heard her speak were given a new sense of appreciation for what the Ma- rines do to protect us and keep us safe from our enemies. The next speaker was Mr. Tae Hyun Chun, President of the NC Branch of the Korean Vietnam War Veterans Associa- tion. He spoke about how much he appre- ciated the U.S. soldiers who fought in the Korean War and how, without their sacri- fice, he would not be here today. He told the story of a whale that was stranded near the Alaskan coast. The whale, in searching for food, must have swam into shallow waters and was stuck as the water around it began to freeze. The surrounding villagers saw the stranded whale and soon the entire vil- lage joined to try to manually break the ice to free the whale. Word quickly spread about this village’s effort to save the whale and eventually a Russian ice-breaking ship came to help. Finally, the whale was set free and swam away into open waters. Even though the whale was oblivious to how much effort was extended by those around it to save it, the people were willing to save the whale nonetheless. Mr. Chun pointed out that many of the younger generations in Korea are in the same situation as the whale. They do not know or do not understand the sac- rifice made by American soldiers and how they are the direct beneficiaries of such sac- rifice. However, Mr. Chun expressed that on behalf of the Korean Vietnam Veterans pres- ent in the audience, they do remember and know deep in their hearts how much they owe to those American soldiers who fought for them in the Korean War. Mr. Chun con- tinued to tell his story of how he was a Blue Dragon Korean “ROK” (Republic of Korea) Marine. The Blue Dragons were among the first troops deployed to engage in combat in the Vietnam War, and as a result, suffered casualties resulting in the loss of more than half of their brigade. He, himself, faced sev- eral brushes with death throughout the war. At the conclusion of his talk, the audience applauded Mr. Chun giving him a stand- ing ovation. After the speakers, lunch was served and all in attendance ate together in the spirit of shared camaraderie. During lunch, it was decided both American Veter- ans and Korean Veterans would gather to- gether on joint activities on a regular basis and continue to support and cooperate the other in their work. continue to page 6 logo design, marketing materials, web design, video editing and animation 704-617-3332 E [email protected]W virginiafaircloth.com

Asian cultures represented in Charlotte encompass over 13 nations. One of the missions of the CAACC is to unite all of these groups to better service the public. Asian history spans thousands of years and its culture is rich and diverse. The CAACC strives to provide business op-portunities and to promote business actiAvities through cultural events, such as the annual Asian Festival & Dragon Boat Races each spring and Asian celebrations in the Fall that display our resources and share with you our ethnic qualities.
Forty years ago, there were less than 200 Asians and only 8 Asian businesses in the Regional Charlotte Area, but this number has grown to 55,000 Asians and 630 businesses directly involved with Asians. Con-sidering average gross sales of $480,000 a year per business, the Asian population of this area is generating $302 million in revenues, contribut-ing greatly to the regional economy. We invite you to join the CAACC for unique resources, and then cross the bridge between the East and the West.■ Dr. Ki-Hyun Chun (Founder & the first President)

A QUARTER OF A CENTURY OF FILIPINO UNITY
by Dr Nini Bautista
A hallmark of the vitality & unity of the Filipino American communi-ty in the Greater Charlotte area and its environs is its annual Gala Night which was first organized in Novem-ber 1988 by Rudy and Lita Joaquin, who reprised their role at the Silver Gala of the Filipino Americans on November 10, 2012. From this begin-ning, the FACC was later established in 1990 and became the vibrant, car-ing, socially responsible organization that has withstood almost a quarter century of challenges. The Blake Hotel Ballroom that night was aglow with guests in glittering evening gowns & tux..luminaries, pi-oneers, newbies and oldies of the Fil-ipino community from near and afar. The cultural show, by perennial show coordinators Cynthia del Mundo& Merly Penilla, featured the young of
all sizes and ages, children of FACC members. The youngest participant was 1 yr old Olivia Penilla, a 3rd gen-eration "volunteer" who shared the stage with auntie Victoria, Ms Talent 2003 and grandpa Wally, 1995 Presi-dent & Lola Merly.Close second was 4 yr old Frankie Fallar Aaron,4th generation olunteer, appearing on stage with mom, Jackie, Ms Asian Festival 2006 & grand Auntie Dell Fallar, FACC President in 2005 & 2006..Likewise, Grace, Ella & Jo-sephine, daughters of Angelo of the 1990 Youth Group with Lolo, 1997 President Rudy & Lola, 2012 Presi-dent Lita. We are delighted to announce that after a year and a half of hard work, International House will be moving in mid-December to the former Midwood High School at 1817 Central Avenue. We regret that we must say good-bye to the Staten House, our home of 27 years on Hawthorne Lane ( thanks to the generosity of our landlord and benefactor, St. John’s Baptist Church). But as one chap-ter ends, another exciting story is about to unfold. International House has seized this unique opportunity to create a brand new cultural and community center. We will transform an empty school into the Midwood Interna-tional & Cultural Center (MICC), a vibrant hub of intercultural activity. Midwood is an incredible facility that will offer much better office and classroom space for International House’s clients, staff, and volunteers. But, this building is too big and costly for us to operate alone. Therefore, we have created a coalition of like-minded partners to share it
with us. With sev-eral tenant groups, MICC can provide affordable space for nonprofits and international and cultural organiza-tions and flourish as a re-invented community center. Many of these ten-ant groups serve similar constituent
groups, so there are exciting possibilities for shared programming and partnerships. Ten-ants also can share conference rooms and a staff lounge, and use the large auditorium for cultural performances, festivals, or ban-quets. Finally, MICC is ideally located in the Plaza Midwood area of Central Avenue, one of the most international corridors of Char-lotte. How did we get here? This past Tuesday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Edu-cation formally voted to give International House a long-term lease at the former Mid-wood High School, one of 10 CMS schools closed last year due to budget cuts. Although the final ratification of our lease occurred just this past week, the process actually began 18 months ago when International House replied to a competitive RFP process from CMS and was chosen out of a pool of 10 applicants to pursue master tenant status. Since that time, International House has convened a coalition of other tenant organi-zations, created an umbrella entity to gov-ern and handle the day to day operations, received a $99,500 grant from the City’s Neighborhood and Business Develop-ment Department, and raised an additional $75,000 in the silent phase of a capital campaign. Although the school has “good bones” and was renovated in 2007, we still needed to make renovations and repairs to the core building, up-fit classrooms and of-fices, and improve the building and grounds with signage, security, and repaired parking surfaces.
International House is extremely excited about the expanded space at MICC where we will be able to provide our clients and staff with a comfortable environment. We have grown significantly during our 27 years at the Staten House, and our current location has become cramped and inef-ficient. Sometimes, we have so many cli-ents, classes, and meeting occurring at the same time, some groups have been forced to meet in the kitchen! But even more, In-ternational House is looking forward to the creative programming and shared synergies that will occur with some of our neighboring tenants at MICC. Our current tenant roster includes the Japanese Association of Char-lotte, Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Cul-tural Association, One Ethiopian Commu-nity of Charlotte, Language Academy of the Carolinas, Time Out Youth, and the League of Women Voters. At the time of this writ-
ing, we are also in conversation with other inter-ested groups and hope to fill the remaining avail-able rooms very soon. Since 1981, I n t e r n a t i o n a l House has been a unique nonprofit o r g a n i z a t i o n
serving the Charlotte/Mecklenburg commu-nity by actively promoting global diversity, tearing down cultural barriers, and helping immigrants integrate into our community. Charlotte is an increasingly diverse city, and our work is critically important, now more than ever. Our upcoming move to the Midwood International & Cultural Center in mid-December will expand our reach and allow us to serve even more of Charlotte’s vulnerable international populations. We are in for an exciting ride in the weeks and months ahead. We hope you will join us! ■

Opera Carolina Presents The Magic Flute
Celebrated Diva Yunah Lee returns for the new family-friendly production designed
by acclaimed visual artist Jun Kaneko
Charlotte, N.C., (Dec. 17, 2012) – Opera Carolina’s new production of Mozart’s beloved opera, The Magic Flute, which per-forms Jan. 19, 24 and 27, 2013, promises to enchant audiences of all ages. This innova-tive recreation of an enduring masterpiece is a vibrant fusion of fantastically colorful staging, captivating music and magnetic star power. A collaboration with San Francisco Opera and Washington Opera at the Kennedy Center, Opera Carolina’s The Magic Flute features visionary stage and costume design by famed visual artist Jun Kaneko. The Magic Flute’s powerhouse cast features lyr-ic soprano Yunah Lee (Pamina) who returns after last year’s triumphant performance in Opera Carolina’s production of Kaneko’s much-admired Madama Butterfly, Ameri-can tenor Shawn Mathey in his signature role, Prince Tamino, and Metropolitan Opera baritone Kyle Pfortmiller as every-one’s favorite bird-man, Papageno. They are joined by Beijing Opera bass-baritone Sun Yu (Sarastro) and the exciting Cuban American soprano Maria Aleida (Queen of the Night). Kaneko’s designs create a magical landscape for Mozart’s allegorical tale of good and evil, and the human desire for love, wisdom and virtue. Playful, and yet filled with symbolism and ritual, the opera features some of Mozart’s best-loved mu-sic. The new production debuted this past summer in San Francisco, earning applause from the San Francisco Chronicle for its “explosively colorful stage design, which combines projected animations with vivid costumes.” “We are thrilled to bring another stand-out Kaneko production to the Charlotte region,” said James Meena, general director and principal conductor of Opera Carolina. Entertaining opera audiences for more than two centuries, The Magic Flute fol-lows the journey of the handsome Prince Tamino as he seeks to win the hand of
the beautiful Pamina by earning wisdom and knowledge in the Temple of the priest Sarastro. Armed with his Magic Flute, Tamino and his traveling companion Pa-pageno endure trials of truth and wisdom as they search for true and lasting love. The Magic Flute performs on January 19, 24 and 27 at the Belk Theater, Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. A 25 percent discount is available for season ticket hold-ers, a 50 percent Youth Discount, plus $10 Student Rush tickets and various Group Discounts. Sun Yu BiographyChinese bass-baritone Sun Yu is the first-prize winner of the 2001 Liederkranz Foun-dation’s Wagnerian Voice Competition. His performance as Chou Hu in the U.S. premiere of Jing Shan’s Savage Land was highly praised by the Washington Post’s Joseph McLellan as “Sun Yu’s charisma, polished powerful voice and versatility as both a dramatic and comedic performer.” Also in another article, “Star Turns from China”, concerning Mr. Sun’s performance as the title role in Verdi’s Attila, the same critic wrote: “Sunday night, he sounded like a potential Boris Christoff. There is no higher compliment in my vocabulary for a bass-baritone.” Also Mr. Sun sung several Operas with Mr. Plácido Domingo. ■
all over the world, he has graced the stages of the Paris Opera and London’s Covent Gar-den, as well as major U.S. companies such as Chicago’s Lyric Opera and the Wash-ington National Opera. Last season, Mathey made his debut with the Lyric Opera of Chicago in A Midsum-mer Night’s Dream. Of that performance, Chicago Classical Review noted: “Shawn
Mathey made an impressive Lyric debut as Lysander, displaying a honeyed tenor and proving both ardent and amusing in his sudden post-potion infatuation.” Metropolitan Opera baritone Kyle Pfort-miller has won acclaim across the U.S., and also in Europe with a repertoire that includes the title roles in Don Giovanni and Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Of the latter role, Opera Online noted: “Pfortmiller’s voice packs a wallop and, coupled with a strong and darkly handsome stage presence that sets this singer apart whenever he is on stage.” Of his New York City Opera performance in Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte, New York Newsday wrote, “Vocal honors go to baritone Kyle Pfortmiller … who has a dark, buttery sound and a personality that pops off the stage.”
A native of Shangai, bass-baritone Sun Yu, is an award-winning singer who has performed lead operatic roles on many of the world’s top stages. Trained at the China Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, Yu is the first-prize winner of the 2001 Liederkranz Foundation’s Wagne-rian Voice Competition. His performance as Chou Hu in the U.S. premiere of Jing Shan’s Savage Land was highly praised by the Washington Post’s Joseph McLellan as “Sun Yu’s charisma, polished powerful voice and versatility as both a dramatic and comedic performer.” Also in another article, “Star Turns from China,” concern-ing Yu’s performance as the title role in Verdi’s Attila, the same critic wrote: “Sun-day night, he sounded like a potential Boris Christoff. There is no higher compliment in my vocabulary for a bass-baritone.” Yu has also performed in five operas at the Washington National Opera under the direction of Placido Domingo. Cuban soprano Maria Aleida began her musical studies at the Vicente Emilio Sojo Conservatory in Venezuela. Prize winner at the Montserrat Caballe international voice competition in Zaragoza (2008), the Mario Lanza Institute in Philadelphia (2009), and the Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation in New York (2010), she was a Finalist at the New England Region in Boston, and at the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2011. She is a resident artist at The Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadel-phia where she has sung roles as Nanetta in Verdi’s Falstaff and Musetta in La bohème.

ties (Charlotte)
In small rural towns outside of Char-lotte, North Carolina, thousands of Hmong refugees and their families are building homes and communities. They settled here decades ago when they came to start a new life, fl eeing persecution af-ter the Vietnam War. Many of these fami-lies see America as their home, and sev-eral of the elders fought alongside U.S. troops. As the fourth-largest Hmong community nationwide, the majority of these individuals are eligible for citizen-ship, but unfortunately, the community lacked the support and resources they needed to navigate the complex, costly naturalization process. In response, the Southeast Asian Coali-tion, a partner of The New Americans Campaign, has led efforts to better serve this community. In the small community of Morganton, two and a half hours out-side of Charlotte, residents had no access to immigration attorneys who could assist them with the citizenship process. Work-ing closely with other local Campaign partners, the Coalition found new ways to hold the community’s fi rst-ever citizen-ship workshop by recruiting and training volunteers who could reach this remote community and provide needed services in the community’s own languages. By reaching out in the University of
North Carolina – Char-lotte, the Southeast Asian Coalition found many students through the Hmong Association on campus that not only wanted to give back to their community, but also grew up in the area. After training the stu-dents in Charlotte, the Coalition was able to

staff a naturalization workshop with these volunteers a few weeks later when they were home in Morganton for their sum-mer vacation. Coordinating the workshop with Hmong students familiar with the community helped foster trust within the community and simplifi es the planning and outreach process. Several volun-teers even brought their own parents and grandparents, recognizing the importance of achieving citizenship in the country they already call their own. Cat Bao Le, Executive Director of the Southeast Asian Coalition, is proud of what they were able to accomplish to-gether. She affi rms that she couldn’t have done it without her fellow New Americans Campaign partners. “It was a real risk because coordinated citizenship support in the Southeast Asian commu-nity around Charlotte hadn’t been done before, but with [Campaign partners] Latin American Coalition (LAC) and Catholic Social Services (CSS), we were able to brainstorm together, create out-reach strategies and leverage our differ-ent strengths,” Le said. “Through LAC we have a Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) accredited advocate at the work-shops and CSS provides essential legal re-view, so our collective infrastructure has been such a great collaboration.” ■

Retirement Security How to Avoid Three Common Myths A Retirement Strategy is the roadmap that shows us where to go, provides signposts along the way, and gets us back on
By Amira Issa, Treasurer elected for Filipino-American Community of the Carolinas.
track if we make a wrong turn. With a Re-tirement Strategy in hand, you have a bet-ter chance of getting where and when you want to be – without it you may flounder, or even remain stuck in the same place you are today. Today, most of us expect to live longer, healthier and more active lives. How are you going to spend your time in retirement? Will you visit fam-ily? Travel? Volunteer? The possibilities are endless but when you do decide, the next step is determining how your choices translate into dollars and cents. So ask yourself: can you afford the lifestyle you envision? Will you have dependents? What will my other expenses be? These are just a few of the questions that need answering, but following through still does not guarantee a dream come true. There are 3 popular myths about retirement that you want to avoid falling prey to. Myth #1—Lower Expenses in Retire-ment. In the past, it’s been suggested that a good target for retirement income was 50% to 80% of pre-retirement after-tax in-come. However, your mortgage might not decrease, your healthcare and insurance costs may increase and with more free time you may tend to spend more money, depending on your situation. In short, you can’t just assume your retirement income needs will decrease during retirement. A good tactic is to base your planning on a range of scenarios. Myth #2—My Social Security and Pen-sion will be EnoughTraditionally, income at retirement has come from three sources —government programs, employer-sponsored plans, and private savings. However, today private savings is becoming an increasingly more important part of the equation. Social Se-curity was never designed as an alternative
For Professionals!!!
to personal responsibility. And, the higher your pre-retirement income, the less mon-ey you will receive from Social Security. When it comes to employer-sponsored pension plans, the trend in recent years has been for employers to offer tax-advan-taged retirement savings plans to employ-ees instead of employer funded pensions. One difference is that while a pension plan is guaranteed, a retirement savings plans (401(k) plans are the most popular) are subject to the ups and downs of the stock market. Another difference is that retirement sav-ings plans today are often funded largely with the employee’s contributions. If you fail to contribute or make poor investment choices, the benefits you receive from your retirement savings plans could turn out to be less than expected. Myth #3—I Know How Long My Mon-ey’s Going to Last. Life expectancy is on the rise. You may end up being retired longer than you were in the workforce and this can make a big difference in how much you have to save while still working. Your life expectancy can make a big difference. For example, if you start with a retire-ment nest egg of $775,000 and earn 6% on your money, you can expect to receive about $75,000 per year for 15 years before your money runs out. If you live 20 years in retirement, you will need to start with $915,255 instead of just $775,000, to stay in the money for the duration of life. After dispelling these myths, you may want to recalculate the estimate of what it’s going to take to finance the retirement lifestyle you envision. If you’re like many people, you may en-counter a gap between what you need and what you can expect to have. Your choices are pretty straightforward: • Delay your retirement date. • Reduce your retirement income goal. • Increase your savings level. • Increase the return on your investment.A well thought-out retirement strategy can be flexible enough to incorporate these changes.A licensed financial professional can get you started and help you monitor your strategy over the years. ■

Angela Kim wins everybody with a per-sonality that exudes happiness, joy and modesty. Born in Texas, and raised in a tra-ditional Korean family, she is part of gener-ation Y, having a profound blend of yin and yang. She belongs to a cohort of multitask-ers, that can juggle e-mails on their Black-Berrys while talking on cell phones and trolling (blog posting) online. While boom-ers may expect a phone call or in-person meeting on important topics, the Ys pre-fer virtual problem solving, brainstorming
cookie-monsters in the office or at home, while in casual fare such as flip-flops, fake-tattoos and capri pants. Here or there, she is moved by a desire to develop solutions, and articulate changes, while herself remaining our An-gie “from the block.” While visiting with Asian Herald, Angela’s accomplishments
and dreams took words of wisdom; the softly, but firm voice ease the story of her beginnings in a fluent and captivating way. She used her nickname for her blog-title, making sure that family and friends feel at home; I am sure all kids will gladly go to sleep knowing that a “monster” like her is holding a tray of aromatic treats underneath the bed. The blog conversation’s is sweet, but hum-ble; “I feel so incredibly blessed everyday to be able to share my love and passion with
as many people who will listen. I am grate-ful for my family, my health–to have a roof over my head and a soft and warm bed to sleep in…there’s just so much to be thank-ful for.” These words are reflected on her philanthropic activities; genuine love, care and compassion are mixed with food in ev-ery bag delivered by Angela and her friends to the homeless ministries. Targeting all levels of foodies, her blog, video and recipes are a delight; easy to fol-low, and with a candor humor, they are Korean stories on a plate, with a southern tradition fusion. Thanks to the explosion of
Asian markets in Charlotte region, all of the ingredients can be easily found. With colors bursting in every dish, it’s not just pleas-ing the eye, but an amalgam of nourish-ments for good-health. For this reason she is invited to FirstNationsHealthAssis.org to empower people in developing good eating habits, cooking experiences and understand-ing of Hippocrate’s quote “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” Angela Kim was featured in Charlotte To-day as an aspiring food connoisseur; we are adding to that her intentions of traveling around the world. A blossoming curiosity, born free as she experience various sides of the civilizations, keeps Angela on her toes, smiling at every sweet or savory creation. In her last blog-post “ Random acts of Christmas, take II”, she wrote “ This will be the only sweet surprise that I will pub-licly be sharing with my “anonymous giv-ing” but I figured, I would whittle down the steps of a cake commonly labeled as “difficult.” ….I am thrilled that so many of you are on board with spreading Christmas cheer through food. It makes my heart so happy.” For all of you, readers, that enjoy brows-ing the web for new opportunities to delight your eyes and test buds it will be a great cu-linary endeavor to stop by, read, watch and say hello to Angela.

The Korean Vietnam Veterans Association of Carolina

“It was an extraordinary experience… The level of skill, but also the power of the archetypes and the narratives was startling. And of course it was exquisitely beautiful.”
Cate Blanchett Academy Award-winning Actress
“I have reviewed over 3,000 to 4,000 shows since 1942. I give this production 5 stars. That’s the top... I’ve seen enough Broadway shows that still cannot compare to what I saw tonight. The best word to use is ‘mind blowing.’”
Richard Connema Broadway critic
Robert Stromberg Academy Award-winning production designer
“Absolutely beautiful... It has become this one big poetic event. It was so inspiring, I think I may have found some new ideas for the next Avatar.”
Millions of people have seen shen Yun. standing ova-tions at the world’s top venues,
royalty attending in europe, sold-out shows throughout north America, and packed houses across Asia have made shen Yun an international phenomenon.
Christine Walevska, master cellist
“Really out of this world! There is no word to describe it… If I had to de-scribe it, the words might be ‘divine,’ ‘reborn’ and ‘hope’… It’s beauty from beginning to end. You have to see it to believe it.”
