FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK…..
Dear Parish Families, Mercyhurst University has as its motto: “Carpe Diem!” It is usually translated to mean: “Seize the day!” It refers to having a disposition which urges someone to make the most of the present time and to give a little thought to the future. These next few days, I encourage you to take hold of this beautiful opportunity to attend the Mission talks by Father Bill Garrott, O.P., our mission presenter. I know Father Bill personally, as he delivered three powerful talks last year at this time at St. Elizabeth Church in Corry when I was their pastor. He spoke to FULL CHURCHES of very engaged listeners. He was especially helpful as he was with me when the parish was told it was going to merge into St. Thomas Church on February in 2017. His message of hope and consolation was extremely effective. We really needed him at that time in our parish history. I also believe we need his message at this time in history at St. Mark and Mt. Calvary parishes. We are in the beginning of our relationship of partnership. We are only now unfolding the opportunities to promote more vitality for each parish. Yet, there is so much work to do to get there. We need to move away from “We have always done it this way” to “We can do an even better job!” But the only way we can become more vital is to begin with prayer and interior conversion – which I hope can be encouraged by our Parish Mission. Please make it your business to attend the Mission. It begins tonight at St. Mark’s Church. Check the itinerary in today’s bulletin. You won’t regret it one bit! Carpe Diem! Please know you are in my daily prayers!
In order to meet press deadline, all bulletin submissions must be
transmitted in writing to the administrative assistant
by no later than Monday at
12:00 p.m. NOON.

“SIGN, SIGN, EVERYWHERE A SIGN” Due to special circumstances, the parishioner who was our “sign lady” had to resign from her ministry of changing the Mt. Calvary road sign. We are now looking for a generous-hearted parishioner (teen through adult) who will take on the responsibility of changing the outdoor sign at Mt. Calvary. Would you consider this ministry? You can even enlist a “buddy” to work with! Father will train you—and he will email you the “content” of the message. To offer your stewardship of time, please contact Father Mark at the parish office: 899-3000 or email him at: [email protected]. Hope this simple invitation is your SIGN to volunteer!!

is sponsoring the Catholic Charities “Diaper Drive” at Mount Calvary & St. Mark Parishes
Every Sunday in October we will be collecting the following items:
diapers blankets wipes formula new bottles and pacifiers baby lotion shampoo infant clothing
other baby accessories gently used maternity clothes
Collection boxes are located at the entrances of both churches
Thank you for your support! One of the many programs Catholic Charities Counseling and Adoption Services offer is free counseling and material assistance to pregnant women, or parents of very young children. Because of their continued commitment to help these families in need, their agency is holding a "diaper drive" to collect much needed baby supplies. The need to replenish these supplies is great because of the ongoing demand for these items.

AROUND THE PARISH
AND OUR DIOCESE
A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE Every family is visited by difficult times which can unite or divide. These hardships, which we would quickly reject, hold the potential to be the unifying “cornerstone” where we drop our pettiness and defenses and pull together, linked by a common bond and love for one another.
MARRIAGE MOMENTS "Have no anxiety at all, but...make your requests known to God." (Philippians 4:6) We all have anxieties in life - money, health, our kids, safety, etc.) My spouse cannot solve all my problems, but sharing our needs in prayer together can lessen the anxiety.
OCTOBER IS MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS MONTH
Every year about 1 in 4 people are diagnosed with a mental disorder, such as depression, bi-polar disease, or schizophrenia. Mental illness encompasses biological, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of the individuals affected. It impacts the person’s family. Mental illness raises questions of faith: “Why me?” As a faith community, we can support individuals and families during their illness, from first occurrence to ongoing recovery. We can offer comfort through our prayerful presence in people’s lives by acknowledging their pain and supporting them through the recovery process.

October 2, 2017 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, This year, World Mission Sunday will be acknowledged and celebrated in parishes and dioceses around the world on the weekend of October 21-22.
Our Holy Father Pope Francis continues to call our attention to the mis-sionary heart of the Christian community by inviting our response to the vast and pressing needs of others throughout the world. Mission is at the heart of our Christian faith, and we can be witnesses to that faith by ac-knowledging Jesus Christ in every neighbor we meet.
I invite all of us in the diocese of Erie, therefore, to view World Mission Sunday as a special moment of encounter with our neighbors throughout the world. As we continue to see and learn about the daily struggles of peo-ple in other countries, let us remember, also, those clergy, religious and lay leaders who give so generously of their lives by bringing Christ to our neigh-bors throughout the world.
Today, I ask you to support their efforts through your prayers and finan-cial generosity as you are able. I thank you and assure you of my prayers as we all work together to serve Our Lord as we serve one another. Sincerely yours in Christ, +Lawrence T. Persico
The Most Reverend Lawrence T. Persico, JCL Bishop of Erie
Knights of Columbus
Christmas Cheer
The Knights of Columbus have been blessed with an opportunity to offer a special wine package design just for Mt. Calvary and St. Mark’s in time for the Christmas Gift Season. We encourage you to share these gifts with family and friends during Christmas, Easter and all other festive occasions!
We are partnering with our friends at Mazza Winery to offer a 3-bottle package of wine. The box contains three varieties of wines which are beautifully decorated with pictures of Mount Calvary Church (RISLING), Saint Mark Church (CONCORD), and pictures of stained glass windows (ROSE) from each church: “The Crucifixion of Our Lord” and “The Baptism of Saint Mark by Saint Peter.”
Orders will be taken at each church and must be pre-paid at the time of the order. Questions may be directed to Rich Main at (814)-392-2687.
This is an excellent idea for gift-giving and a fantastic way to support your parish and our local Knights of Columbus Council #13826. Proceeds remain at our parishes for the needs of our local community. Orders may be picked up at either church November 18/19.
