Mission Statement We, the faith community of St. Bernadette, strive to better know, love, and serve God, through the teachings of

His Son Jesus Christ and the graces provided to us through His Holy Spirit and the Sacraments.

Dear Parishioners,

April is Sexual Abuse Awareness Month. This topic can be difficult to talk or think about but consider that about 1 in 4 women, usually as young girls, have been victims of sexual abuse and perhaps 1 in 6 men, also as young boys, have been victims. It is a much bigger problem than you might imagine. We as a Church still deal with this and will continue to need to deal with this. The recent accounts of the young gymnasts who have been victims reminds us that society still has much to do and learn about this topic. Last week at a program for all the Priests and Permanent Deacons we were asked to raise our hands if we knew someone who has been abused. All the hands went up. This touches all of us. I want to ask you all to think about a couple of things. One is that someone who has been abused can’t simply “get over it.” The abuse that takes place is also a trauma that leaves scars of PTSD. The part of the brain that remembers the event is not the same part in which we retain other memories. It is the same place that military members and first responders remember things. So, the work to overcome such things is much harder. Second if someone should tell you they we’re abused don’t discount them, try, and simply listen and encourage them to seek assistance and tell their story. Pray for those affected and pray for us to continue to respond in love and grace.

God Bless, Fr. Dave

“Praise be to you, my Lord.” These words open Pope Francis’ encyclical on ecology and care for God’s creation, Laudato Si, quote the canticle of St. Francis of Assisi. They remind us that our common home is like a sister with

whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.

Question of the Week Fifth Sunday of Easter

Strengthening your faith

Reading I Acts 9:26–31 (Saul visits Jerusalem) Reading II 1 John 3:18–24 (the actions of believers) Gospel John 15:1–8 (the vine and the branches) Key Passage: [The vine grower] removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. (John 15:2) Adult: When have you been “pruned” by your experiences in a way that led to greater abundance? Child: When have you felt stronger or better because you did something hard to help another person?

Reflection John presents us with the beautiful image of the Church as the vine and the branches. We note in the daily readings from the Acts of the Apostles during the Easter season that new communities were being evangelized and grafted onto Christ, the true vine. The proof that each new community was truly grafted to Christ can be seen by the fruit they bear. We also can look at Baptism as the means through which each person is grafted onto Christ. This spiritual engrafting is accom-plished by Christ’s Death on the Cross. Therefore, we are in him and must abide in him. Apart from the vine, the branches cannot survive.
