Welcome to Gloucester Cathedral in the building, or at home via the live stream.
This is our main Sunday morning service and is a celebration of The
Eucharist, instituted by Jesus at the Last Supper. All are welcome to
receive Holy Communion or a blessing.
It is a great relief that worship for all can return to the cathedral, even if
we must offer it carefully and in a modified way in accordance with
important guidance. For July and August the worship will follow a reliable
and safe way in which all can come and receive Communion. Social
distancing is possible in such a large building and we are pleased to be
able to offer this as worship gradually returns in every place as
appropriate. Dean Stephen
All worship will be offered in accordance with government and church
health and safety guidance. Having been present in the cathedral today for
worship, please could you send an email to
[email protected] to indicate your attendance stating
clearly your name/s and contact details in order to comply with the track
and trace process. Thank you.
At this time, we ask you to use sanitizer as you enter and leave the
building. We also request that you keep this order of service in
your possession at all times and take it away with you at the end of
the service.
All the seating will be 2 metres apart. Those from the same
household or ‘bubble’ can sit more closely together.
There will be no congregational singing in this service.
At the distribution of holy communion the ministers will wear
masks.
No collection will be made during the service, but a gift can be left
in the Gargoyles or via the contactless payment point near the
South Porch.
Thank-you.
All chairs will be cleaned before and after the service.
If you wish to wear PPE in the cathedral, that will be acceptable.
We repeat the advice that those whose health is vulnerable or are
over 70 are encouraged to stay at home, but, can go out, being
advised to take special care.

Further details about the measures the Cathedral has taken to keep
worshippers and visitors safe can be found on the website
www.gloucestercathedral.org.uk
If you are new, and would like to discover more about the cathedral
congregation, please do introduce yourself to a member of the clergy
(email addresses are given on the website).
There is also information about being part of the cathedral congregation
on the cathedral website, under the Worship and Community section:
gloucestercathedral.org.uk. Children are warmly welcomed in the
cathedral.
For those following the live stream of this service at home, we encourage
you to safely light a candle or place a cross near the screen and to use
this order of service.
CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP 'All things come from you and of your own do we give you'
The generosity of the congregation and its many visiting worshippers
helps the Cathedral to meet the ever increasing costs of sustaining its
worship and music. Therefore, in the true spirit of Christian Stewardship
we seek to maximise the benefit obtained from your donations.
If you are a UK taxpayer, Gift Aid allows us to claim an additional 25 per
cent on each amount donated. If you have just started to worship at
the Cathedral, please consider the Direct Debit Planned Giving
Scheme. It is the most efficient method of planned giving, as it
greatly reduces the administrative overheads.
The two other Planned Giving Schemes are weekly envelopes and
Standing Orders. If you would like to discuss your planned giving in
confidence, please speak to one of the clergy.
All you need for the service is included in this booklet. The notices are on the
back pages. In this Order of Service, when it is indicated that the congregation
should stand, please feel free to remain seated if this is easier for you.
Out of respect for those leading the service, and others who are worshipping
around you, please do not take photographs during the course of the service.
We are sorry to have to advise you that you should take all valuables with you
when you leave your seat to receive Communion or a blessing.

Today the Bishop of Tewkesbury and the Dean will admit new members to the
Company of St Kyneburga.
The Company of Saint Kyneburga
The Bishop of Gloucester today presents long service awards to people
who have served the life of the Church in and around Gloucestershire.
Eighteen people, all from different backgrounds, who have played different
roles in the life of the Church, are being recognised for their dedication
to the Diocese, to parishes, chaplaincies and church schools. They will
become new Members of the Company of Saint Kyneburga.
Saint Kyneburga was the co-foundress and abbess in the eighth century of
the first religious community at what is now Gloucester Cathedral. The
association with Kyneburga is a reminder that those who are honoured
for their service today are the latest in a long line going back 1300 years
of those who have built up, maintained and enriched the life of the
Church in Gloucestershire.
Membership of the Company of Saint Kyneburga recognises and honours
service to the Diocese, usually over a very long period of time, by
readers, churchwardens, church architects, musicians, head teachers,
clergy and others. Members will receive a Badge of Membership and will
be invited to an annual service and reception in the Cathedral.
Colin Charter
Colin’s introduction to the Cathedral community came when he was
accepted as a chorister in 1948. Later in 1960 he took a teaching post in
a local secondary school and joined the committee of the King’s School
former pupils where he served in various guises for over 30 years, as
Secretary, Chairman and President. He also joined the Gloucester
Cathedral Old Choristers’ Association committee serving to date 49
years, 10 of which as Chairman. Currently he is their representative at
the Federation of Cathedral Old Chorister Associations having attended
AGMs and Festivals at 35 Cathedrals and Collegiate Choral Foundations
around the country. Colin and his wife Alison served as Cathedral
Stewards for some twenty years, including Colin’s five years as Head
Steward. He also contributed as a voluntary Cathedral Guide.
4
In 2006, under Bishop Michael, Colin was appointed to be a Bishop’s
Visitor for a group of Secondary Schools who had formed a Partnership in
Affiliation with the Diocese, then a new initiative, to reinforce the
importance of spiritual, moral, social and cultural education. His work
with Bishops’ College and more particularly with Severn Vale School was
greatly valued.
Colin’s commitment to supporting Gloucester Cathedral and its Music
continues through the Friends of the Cathedral, the Friends of Cathedral
Music and the Music Patrons Scheme.
Colin Eddy
Colin has been actively involved with a church virtually all his life –
starting at the age of about 5, as a treble, joining his brother and father in
the choir of the local parish church. When his voice broke, he became a
server, then later moved to the back row of the choir, to join the basses.
When work dictated a move to Gloucester, he fairly quickly became part
of the local parish church, joining the choir, becoming a member of the
PCC, forming a youth group and taking a prominent role in the annual
church Fete.
After several years, a move to another part of Gloucester with his wife
Ann, saw him again join the choir, the PCC and become a churchwarden
in his local church.
In 2003 he started to attend the cathedral, with the idea of enjoying the
traditional worship and music but remaining anonymous and not getting
too involved. That lasted for just a few years!
He and Ann were asked to help out with stewarding over the busy
Christmas period. That resulted in an invitation to become full Cathedral
stewards.
Colin was appointed Festival Secretary for the Gloucester Three Choirs
Festival in 2010 and 2013. His detailed knowledge of the cathedral
organisation proved beneficial for both Cathedral and Festival.
In 2011 Colin served on the organising committee for the Glorious
Gloucester Flower Festival in the Cathedral and took an active role with
organising the Gala Dinner held in the Nave.
5
With Chris Stretton’s retirement as Head Steward in August 2016, Colin
accepted the invitation from the Dean to take over this position. It
proved to be a challenging time with the start of phase one of Project
Pilgrim. On numerous occasions, well thought out plans had to be revised
with little or no notice, as parts of the cathedral were unexpectedly
fenced off, but services went ahead without too much noticeable
disruption.
Colin retired as Head Steward in January 2020, for he and Ann to have
more ‘us’ time. The Covid pandemic certainly provided that!
Chris Stretton
Chris was first invited to assist at the major Christmas services by the
then Head Verger, Mike Heather, about 40 years ago. In 1991 Chris was
invited to become a Steward, an office he is still proud to hold. Chris
became Head Steward in 2011, Dean Stephen’s first act on arrival.
Chris has been a volunteer with The Cathedral Breakfast Club for the
Homeless since a few weeks after its beginning in October 2007,
becoming its Coordinator for several years.
Chris was a local GP for 34 years until 2001. His practice patients
generously collected a retirement fund to be donated to the Cathedral
who honoured him by commissioning the 3 paintings by local artist Iain
Mckillop mounted behind the Lady Chapel altar.
Chris says; ‘Outwith the cathedral I have two other activities which help
me to practice the Christian principle of Charity. I have been a
Freemason for 35 years and now spend much of my time as an Almoner,
working nationally with the Masonic Charitable Foundation, and locally in
assisting masons or their widows and dependants who fall on hard times -
We have been busy lately!’
In 2004 Chris was ‘swept off his feet’ by the founder of a small disaster
relief Charity based in Linton near Ross, who was looking for a team
doctor to accompany a Volunteer working group about to visit
Nicaragua, the poorest country in the Americas. Thus began another
abiding joy of helping to collect, clean, repair and pack recycled goods,
including usable medical equipment.

THE FIRST READING
Genesis 32.22-31
A reading from the book of Genesis.
The same night he got up and took his two wives, his two maids, and his
eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. He took them and
sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that he had. Jacob
was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until daybreak. When the man
saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket;
and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said,
‘Let me go, for the day is breaking.’ But Jacob said, ‘I will not let you go,
unless you bless me.’ So he said to him, ‘What is your name?’ And he said,
‘Jacob.’ Then the man said, ‘You shall no longer be called Jacob, but
Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have
prevailed.’ Then Jacob asked him, ‘Please tell me your name.’ But he said,
‘Why is it that you ask my name?’ And there he blessed him. So Jacob
called the place Peniel, saying, ‘For I have seen God face to face, and yet
my life is preserved.’ The sun rose upon him as he passed Penuel, limping
because of his hip.

THE GOSPEL READING
Matthew 14.13-21
Minister Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. All Glory to you, O Lord.
Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a
deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed
him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great
crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. When it
was evening, the disciples came to him and said, ‘This is a deserted place,
and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into
the villages and buy food for themselves.’ Jesus said to them, ‘They need
not go away; you give them something to eat.’ They replied, ‘We have
nothing here but five loaves and two fish.’ And he said, ‘Bring them here
to me.’ Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the
five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and
broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave
them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled; and they took up what
was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate
were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Minister This is the Gospel of the Lord.
All Praise to you, O Christ.

THE CREED
President Let us affirm our common faith:
All We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit
and the Virgin Mary
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
11
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
President In the power of the Spirit,

THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
President The Lord be with you
All And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
President Blessed are you, Lord God,
our light and our salvation;
to you be glory and praise for ever.
From the beginning you have created all things
and all your works echo the silent music of your praise.
In the fullness of time you made us in your image,
the crown of all creation.
You give us breath and speech,
that with angels and archangels
and all the powers of heaven
we may find a voice to sing your praise:
All Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth
are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
President How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord.
As a mother tenderly gathers her children,
you embraced a people as your own.
When they turned away and rebelled
your love remained steadfast.
From them you raised up Jesus our Saviour,
born of Mary, to be the living bread,
in whom all our hungers are satisfied.
15
He offered his life for sinners,
and with a love stronger than death
he opened wide his arms on the cross.
On the night before he died,
he came to supper with his friends
and, taking bread, he gave you thanks.
He broke it and gave it to them, saying:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.
At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine,
he gave you thanks, and said:
Drink this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it,
in remembrance of me.
President Great is the mystery of faith:
All Christ has died:
Christ is risen:
Christ will come again.
President Father, we plead with confidence
his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross;
we remember his dying and rising in glory,
and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at your right hand.
Pour out your Holy Spirit as we bring before you
these gifts of your creation;
may they be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.
As we eat and drink these holy things in your presence,
form us in the likeness of Christ,
and build us into a living temple to your glory.
16
Bring us at the last with [N and] all the saints
to the vision of that eternal splendour
for which you have created us;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
by whom, and with whom, and in whom,
with all who stand before you in earth and heaven,
we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise:
All Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours
for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
President As our Saviour taught us, so we pray.
All Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come; thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
The President breaks the consecrated bread
President We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
All Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.
17
The Agnus Dei is said as the bread is broken.
Jesus, Lamb of God,
have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins,
have mercy on us.
Jesus redeemer of the world,
grant us peace.
President The body and blood of Christ keep you in eternal life
All Amen
In the cathedral, the President and people receive communion. Please stay
distanced from others as you move to the front of the Nave via the North and
South Aisles, and stay within your row as you exit and return to your seat. As you
approach the point of distribution, please use the sanitiser before receiving and
remain standing.
Communion is given in one kind –the wafer; please be assured that this is
regarded as full reception of the sacrament. The communion is distributed by
ministers wearing masks, without further words.
Members of all Christian churches are invited to receive Communion here but if
you are not receiving Communion please come forward and bow your head as a
sign to the Ministers that you wish to receive a blessing.
If you need a gluten-free wafer, please indicate this to the priest.
For those worshipping with the live stream, we encourage the use of this prayer
as you enter into spiritual communion with our Lord Jesus Christ, being unable
to receive the sacrament physically:
Thanks be to you, Lord Jesus Christ,
for all the benefits you have given me,
for all the pains and insults you have borne for me.
Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally,
I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.
O most merciful redeemer, friend and brother,
may I know you more clearly,
love you more dearly,
and follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen. after the Prayer of St Richard of Chicheste

BEACON OF HOPE
The Cathedral is aiming to raise the funds by Christmas to ensure it can
play a crucial role in the local community’s recovery from the Covid-19
pandemic.
The appeal aims to raise £1,000,000 to ensure the Cathedral can remain
open and is able to play a key role at the heart of the city and county
recovery from the coronavirus pandemic. Funding will be used to achieve
the following goals:
Programme collaborative cultural activities to help inspire local
communities, promote wellbeing and stimulate economic growth.
Ensure the Cathedral can play an important role in meeting the
spiritual and social needs of our communities by being at the heart
of the recovery for the city, county and diocese.
Safeguard our heritage, continue to care for our fabric and adapt so
music and worship can still reach people’s homes.
Maintain and develop our training, education and outreach
provisions and support the most vulnerable members of our
community.
Deliver a digital strategy which enhances all of the above.
