PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP IN GOD’S NAME
PRAYER OF MEDITATION
We encourage you to use the following prayer for meditation.
O God, the Creator of this beautiful planet and all that dwells in it, we now pause to remember the
souls of those who perished in the atomic bombings and those who suffer from radiation even now,
and join our hearts and voices together to pray for peace everywhere. May the deadly power of
nuclear arsenals never be unleashed again upon your sacred creation. May such weapons of mass and
indiscriminate annihilation be forever banned and eliminated from the face of the earth. Forgive our
silence, O God, and enable your Church to raise its prophetic voices to speak against the madness of
nuclear pursuits anywhere. Renew our commitment to be faithful stewards of your beautiful creation
and vehicles of peace. In the name of Christ, our Prince of Peace. Amen.
—The Rev. Nobu Hanaoka

LESSON Seated. Rick Davis
A Reading from Romans (8:31–39).
What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? God who did not spare God’s very Son, but rather gave him over for all of us, will not God with the Son also give us everything else? Who will bring
accusation against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus who died, moreover, who
was raised, who is at the right hand of God, is indeed the one who intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the
love of Christ? Will trouble, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written,
“For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are appraised as sheep to be slaughtered.” Rather, in all these things we are more than victorious through God who loves us. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor
angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other thing in all
creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Savior.
Minister: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People: Thanks be to God.
A period of silence is observed following the reading.
HYMN “Such Perfect Love My Shepherd Shows” Standing — all who are able; everyone sings.
8
GOSPEL Remain standing. Dori Torrey
Minister: The Good News of Jesus as written in John (10:11–16).
People: Glory is yours, O Christ.
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd to whom the sheep do not belong, sees the wolf coming and abandons the sheep and flees and, the wolf
snatches them and scatters them. All because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I
know my own and my own know me, just as the Shepherd-Of-All knows me and I know the Shepherd-Of-All. And I
lay down my life for the sheep. And, I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold: I must bring them as well and,
they will listen to my voice, thus there will be one flock, one shepherd.
Minister: The Gospel of the Savior.
People: Praise to you, O Christ.
Children in kindergarten – fifth grade are invited to the playground for Children’s Chapel.
HYMN “Such Perfect Love My Shepherd Shows” Remain standing; everyone sings.
—Words: Henry Williams Baker (1821–1877), para. of Psalm 23, alt.
Music: St. Columba, Irish Melody

CONSECRATION Kneeling or standing — all who are able.
Priest: Holy and gracious God: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen
into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only
and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you,
the God and Creator of all.
Jesus stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a
perfect self-offering for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and
when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and
said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Priest and People:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
14
Priest: We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O God, in this offering of praise and thanksgiving.
Recalling Christ’s life, death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them
by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and
drink of new and unending life in Christ.
Priest and People:
Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity,
constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your
eternal kindom.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ—by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the
unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and for ever. Amen.
Priest: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, in the language of your heart, we are bold to say,
Priest and People:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass
against us. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, and
the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Padre Nuestro que estás en el
cielo, santificado sea tu Nombre,
venga tu reino, hágase tu
voluntad, en la tierra como en el
cielo. Danos hoy nuestro pan de
cada día. Perdona nuestras
ofensas, como también nosotros
perdonamos a quienes nos
ofenden.
