Preparations for The Evening Performance,

an upcoming traditional and contemporary

showcase of dance, music and fashion, has

already started at the Santiam High School

Auditorium, including this past Feb 20.

The exhibition is scheduled for April 30,

7pm—directly following the highly anticipat-

ed Canyon Arts Festival. The theme for the

performance is Follow Your Heart and will

include elements of Alice In Wonderland,

like the Cheshire cat played by local resident

John McCormick. Other local residents will play the white rabbit and Alice—

and the Queen of Hearts in a grand finale party.

This is the second year for the event, which will also feature 18 fashion mod-

els, two hula groups, both youth and adult hip-hop groups and 10-15 local thes-

pians playing Wonderland characters. Director: Jahn Hoover, creative director:

Sheila Hoover, choreographer: Caroll Hueller. Tickets are $20 reserved seating,

$10 general admission and $5 kids 12 and under. $3 matinee performance will

be held at noon with a 45 minute kids dance program. Proceeds go toward San-

tiam Hearts to Arts. Info: 503-586-8072.

Homeowner Accelerated Loan Now Available for Canyon Residents North Fork raised and Me-

hama based mortgage specialist

Wayne Miley is spreading the

good news about a repayment

program that most banks don’t

particularly like.

The pro-

gram, under-

written by

i n ves t me n t

firm Ameri-

prise Finan-

cial, requires

a 700+ credit

score & stead

-y income.

Simplified, it’s an adjustable

rate 3.5% line of credit that re-

duces principle balance early

because the borrowers income

is directly deposited against the

balance. Borrowers then use

the account much like a check-

ing account—leaving more in

the bank to reduce interest,

which is compounded daily.

“Ameriprise Financial focuses

more on customer loyalty than

making money from one loan,”

said Wayne Miley. “They pro-

mote their business by treating

people right.”

The program has been used in

Australia and Europe for sever-

al years. Local Mortgage Bank-

er Wayne Miley is one of the

first in Oregon certified to sell

the program—and the only li-

censed seller near Salem. For

details, call 503-881-2022.

Local Speak In this segment, we ask local

residents their opinions on a topic subject. Opinions are not representative

of The Canyon Weekly.

Do you feel that students should be required to

maintain certain grades to play in

sports?

“Yes, I do. It’s important to be well rounded and educated for the future. Kids need to have a higher level of educa-tion.”

Kerry Crowston, head wrestling coach at SHS, Mill City

“Boy, there’s two sides to that coin isn’t there...if chil-dren with low grades are able to join sports, maybe it will bring them up. But then, it’s a prize for the kids with good grades. Fortunately, I’ve nev-er had to make that decision with my daughter.”

Leslie Lewis, Lyons

“Yes, because I don’t think that they need an extra-curricular activity if they don’t maintain their grades.”

Anna Montandon, Mehama

“Yes, because education comes first.”

Crystal Loftin, Lyons

“Yes.” Val Harris, Lyons

“Absolutely...extra-curricular activity is reward not just a right. Kids that know the al-phabet should be able to get at least C’s”

Master fiddler Kelly Thibodeaux is back for week two of fiddle lessons for students at Gates Elementary, and sat-isfied smiles abound during practice time with Mr. Plotts fourth grade class this past Feb 22. “I like all of it,” said Riley Carlson, age 10. “I’d like to keep taking lessons.” That sentiment was echoed repeatedly by student, teachers, and parents alike.

“Music is an integral part of the hu-man experience,” explained fiddler Thibodeaux. “Take that away and we’re truly missing something.” Local parent and business owner Keri Sanders is spearheading a plan to obtain ongoing fiddle lessons for stu-dents who continue to show interest. Turn Your Trash Into Music Lessons

It may be the easiest way yet to support our schools. No selling, no buying, just re-cycling! Thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Hugen-berger’s kindergarten class at Gates Elemen-tary, along with some dedicated volunteers, we now have a new and painless way to generate funds to help bring arts and music to the students of the Santiam Canyon. Here’s a list of trash the school is now ac-cepting:

Foil juice pouches: any brand, like Capri Sun®, or Honest Kids®. Just remove the straw and gather in a large plastic baggie.

Candy bar wrappers: any brand, any size (really!) M&M’s®, Skittles®, Cadbury®, you eat it, the school gets 2 cents for your wrapper. (No candy boxes or gum wrap-pers, please.)

Chip bags: any brand, any size = 2 cents.

Lunch kits: any brand, any size , such as Lunchables®. Every part accepted except for the cardboard, which can be recycled as usual in the blue bins. Just bring your empty packaging to Gates Elementary during normal school hours. Your trash will be sent, at no charge to the school, to the folks at Terracycle.net who transform difficult to recycle items into an array of useful items from eco-cool designer handbags to fence posts and garbage cans. Then twice a year the school gets a check. For more information and some fun games to play, check out ww.terracycle.net. Call Gates Elementary at 503-897-2191 for drop off hours.

Gates Elementary Cookie Dough Fundraiser Now here’s the most delicious way to help our local kids—in either an easy

scoop tub or proportioned ready to bake. Fresh cookies are always a welcome

treat. Check in with your local Gates Elementary student today! There are ten

flavors to choose from, including Oatmeal Raisin and Walnut Chocolate

Chunk. For more information, call Gates Elementary at 503-897-2191.

The Language of Dance “This class is a great way to really let go and let the male lead,” said Stacie Cook about last Sunday’s introductory class. “Caroll spelled it out step by step, it was painless. Eric and I both had a great date night.” Dance instructor Caroll Hueller has been teaching dance for over 20 years, and empha-sizes trust between partners as being the main component of success. “Leave your troubles at the door and give yourselves the oppor-tunity to learn dance as a new language, a new way to communicate.”

City of Lyons Tallies Survey Results The City of Lyons released the results of a city wide volunteer response survey

this past Feb 1. The 32 question survey was conducted last summer and is re-

Bill Sanderson’s River Report

February 23, 2011 503-897-3301

We now have 2,851 steelhead

in the system. That does not

include the uncounted summer

steelhead, and several steelhead

in the Mehama area. The offi-

cial counts for those summer

fish will start the first of March.

Fishermen's Bend to Mehama

has great medium difficulty

whitewater and many mild

thrills. The fish numbers will

increase as the season matures.

Packsaddle to Fishermen's

Bend has the biggest whitewater

and the most thrills of all the

drifts on the river. There are

some good numbers of steel-

head already up at Packsaddle,

but most of the run is in the

lower river. Bank fishing at

Minto Park, Packsaddle is ideal,

especially around the entrance

of Mad Creek into the main riv-

er. The tricky and large rapids

cause this drift to have less fish-

ing traffic than the lower drifts.

If the weather is dry, we should

be boating and fishing.

If the weather is wet, we

should be planning trips for bet-

ter weather and attending the

meetings that put us together

with our boating and fishing

friends.
