BANKSTOWN GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 3
The end of the first
semester is quickly
approaching and I would
first like to thank
everyone for their hard
work this term. Our lives
seem to get busier and
more and more demands
are placed on our time
but the hard work of the
staff to provide
opportunities for the
girls continues to make
me proud to work at
Bankstown Girls’ High
School.
I would like to write
about the launch of a
new initiative that was
announced at our Merit
Assembly on the 24th
June. A partnership
between the school and
the Australian
Broadcasting
Corporation is being
established to run a
number of programs
that will highlight the
role of the media and
opportunities for
careers in the media. The
ABC will be running
workshops with our girls
and opportunities to
visit the ABC to see the
news in action will be
available. Michele
Fonseca who is the Head
of Strategy and Staff
Development at the ABC
news spoke to the school
to highlight the
opportunities that will
be available to our girls
and what the ABC can
learn from our students
in relation to
transmitting news
stories through current
platforms accessed by
young adults today such
as ‘Instagram’ and
‘Whatsapp’. This is a
very exciting
opportunity for our girls
and we are extremely
lucky to have an
organisation like the
ABC work with us. I
would also like to
acknowledge the work of
Mr Nadile in establishing
the opportunity for this
partnership and the
work of Ms Porreca and
Ms Carmody in the
development of the
program. I would
encourage all of our girls
to become involved in
opportunities that
interest them as they are
offered.
I would also like to
highlight the Merit
Assembly that
recognised the efforts
and progress of our girls
through their

achievements at school
and in the wider
community. It always
gives me great pleasure
to recognise the girls for
what they accomplish. I
would like to encourage
all of you continue to
collect merit certificates
and submit them to your
year advisor so you can
be recognised for your
commitment. I would
also like to issue a
challenge to our year 9
girls. I want to see at
least 30% of you being
rewarded for your
efforts. Can you do it?
We have been without a
substantive Head
Teacher in science since
Ms Gibbons went on
leave. We had the
position go through a
merit selection process
and Anna Edwards will
be joining our school and
taking up the
appointment at the
beginning of Term 4.
Anna has a wealth of
experience and will
bring some exciting
ideas to our school. Until
that time Mr Tsafis
(Head Teacher HSIE)
continues to lead the
faculty and Ms Kyritsis
will act as relieving Head
Teacher HSIE. Our
substantive Principal Ms
Harper will return to her
role at the beginning of
2017 after she finalises
her role as Principal
School Leadership. We
are all looking forward
to having her back in the
chair and the school will
benefit from the
experience she has
gained in her valuable
role supporting
Principals.
In closing I would like to
again thank all of the
staff and students for
their hard work in
making this a really
successful and positive
term. I wish you a safe
and restful holiday and
look forward to seeing
you at the beginning of
Term 3.

BANKSTOWN GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 5
The end of another very
busy term is almost here
and we have reached the
end of Semester One. I
would like to begin by
congratulating all the
girls in Year 8 and 10
who received
outstanding reports for
Semester One. These
girls have shown
continued commitment
to their learning either
through academic
achievement, perfect
attendance, exemplary
behaviour and /or
displaying positive
qualities of respectful,
safe learners. I was also
pleased to see the
number of parents who
attended the Year 8/10
Transition Night. The
night was successful
because of your interest
in your daughters'
learning and the
decisions she is about to
make about subjects and
pathways that she will
be choosing either at
Stage 5 or 6 of her
learning. These
decisions are important
in assisting your
daughter gaining
success in her ROSA or
future HSC. These
decisions will have a
direct impact on your
daughter's future so I
would like to thank you
for beginning this
journey with your
daughter by having
attended the
information evening.
Year 12 continue to see
the school year racing by
and the HSC looming
closer and closer. I
would like to remind
Year 12 that their
learning is not finished
yet. They have courses
and modules to
complete, assessment
tasks due, major works
to finalise and Trial
Examinations. Term 3
will be a very busy term,
therefore perfect
attendance is of
paramount importance.
The girls know that if
they are not at school
they are not giving
themselves maximum
opportunity for success.
Year 12 you must use
these holidays wisely;
continue to study but
also give yourself some
time for rest so that you
can manage Term 3 with
the least amount of
stress possible.
I would like to take this
opportunity to wish all
of you a good holiday
and thank you for a
successful Term.

On Friday 17th June
Bankstown Girl’s High
School celebrated World
Environment Day 2016.
It was an intriguing and
successful day as the
environmental team
managed to fundraise
$397 to make the
environment better
place. There were many
stalls/activities to be
involved in during
recess/lunch such as
henna art, nail painting,
hair braiding and a
fantastic crew running
the photo booth.
We would like to
acknowledge the winner
of the plastic bag
competition, Ann Ho
first place. Well done.
We would also like to
congratulate Sang
Nguyen who was the
winner for the lolly jar
competition.
Congratulations to all
the students for their
effort and contributions.
A great and warm thank
you from the
environmental group to
all the teachers that had
helped: Ms. Carpenter
and her musical team,
Mrs Hemming and PE
teachers, Ms Hawkins
and Ms Poole who
arranged the library for
environment day
decorations, Ms Alam,
the SRC and the Buzz
Media team, and the
science faculty for their
assistance. We
appreciate all the
support.
We are very proud of our
achievement and are
grateful for the multiple
smiling faces roamed
around the shade area
and joined us in the
celebration. As much fun
as we had we must
always remember to
reduce, reuse, and
recycle by:
Using less papers and
packaging and
recycling whenever
is possible.

As part of the World
Environment Day
challenge, students were
asked to design hand
craft items made from
plastic bags to minimise
its impact on sea life and
other living creatures.
Interested students
were encouraged to
learn how to cut plastic
bags into strips, knit
during recess and lunch
or create hand-craft
items from used plastic
bags. Many students
tried to learn how to knit
and did achieve
appreciation for their
work. However, a
number of girls were
determined to meet the
challenge to outstand
the crowd as fascinating
objects were created out
of plastic bags. This
procedure helped
reduce a huge quantity
of plastic bags that could
have damaged the
environment.
These intellectual and
interested students
created amazing hand
craft items including
necklaces, baskets,
flowers and hand bands.
Items made by students
were put on display in
the library during the
World Environment Day
celebration for students
to vote for the best items.
All winners received
money gift cards at the
value of $5-$20.
Winners of the plastic

Get Outside and Grow:
Reconnecting with the
great outdoors
Our environmental
group is inviting
students in our school to
take part in School Tree
day on Friday the 29th
July 2016 and join us
working outdoors in the
garden to connect with
nature and be active and
fit. School Tree Day is an
opportunity for us to
have environmental fun
while learning and
contributing to improve
our garden and create
beautiful school
grounds.
Remember that you
don't have to be planting
trees to take part in
School Tree Day. You
could be growing a
vegetable garden in your
backyard, weeding a
previously planted area
around your home or at
school, adding shrubs or
small trees to the
surrounding or
venturing out to the local
bush to lend community
groups a helping hand to
plant more trees.
Research shows that
time in nature helps us
grow as individuals -
physically, intellectually,
emotionally, mentally,
and ethically. The time
spent playing or working
in nature helps kids to
develop enhanced
learning, concentration,
healing, relaxation and
recover from stress.
"Childhood is a time of
rapid physical, mental
and emotional
development. Time spent
in nature provides a
diversity of sounds,
sights, smells and
textures, and a variety of
plants, animals and
landscapes that children
can engage with. This
mental and sensory
stimulation is important
in human developmental
processes."

“Refugee week is an
annual week-long
celebration of the
positive contributions of
refugees to Australian
society.”—
http://www.refugeewee
k.org.au
A refugee is a person
who’d been forced to
leave their country in
attempt to escape war,
persecution, or natural
disaster. This is an
increasingly relevant
issue in modern society
due to all the wars and
destruction going on
around us; Afghanistan,
Syria, Somalia, the list of
countries in need of help
is heartbreakingly long.
The importance of
raising awareness to this
issue is largely devalued,
which is where Refugee
Week comes in. This
movement aims to
remind Australians of
the millions of families
struggling—just because
you’re not going through
the same thing, doesn’t
mean it doesn’t exist.
Ignorance is not bliss—
ignoring something
doesn’t make it go away.
Australia, among other
privileged nations, have
failed to deliver on
promises to help the
neediest of refugees; we
just send them away to
the nearest island, like if
we ignore the problem
long enough it’ll
disappear.
And so, we must
raise awareness and
take a stand to help
those who need it,
because we’ve been
standing by too long,
which is why it is
important that we
continue to celebrate
Refugee Week at school.
Educating ourselves is
the first step we can take
to helping.
We want to say a
special thanks to Ms
Dymond & Ms Helwani
who organised the
lessons and activities for
Refugee Week at
Bankstown Girls’ High
school on the 21st June.
We would also like to
thank the SRC students
for fundraising $431 to
be donated to the
Refugee Council of
Australia. We are most
impressed with our
students for their
dedication and
enthusiasm.

On the 8th of June year 11
students attended their
second session of
Crossroads. This session
included discussions and
activities about ‘Risky
behaviours’ such as
alcohol, drug use and
road safety. The sessions
were conducted to
convey the important
message to young adults
about such issues that
we may come across or
experience in life.
The year 11 students
were split into groups
where they would rotate
around to different
sessions for period 1 and
2. The first session was
broken up into stations.
Station 1 had an activity
where you put on night-
vision goggles to mimic
the experience of an
‘intoxicated’ person.
From wearing the night-
vision goggles, we
experienced blurred
vision, double images
and unable to determine
proximal distance.
Station 2 categorised a
list of scenarios from
highest risk to lowest
risk. Station 3 required
as to go through our
song playlist and write
down all the songs which
promoted drug use,
sexual behaviour and/or
negativity. Station 4
required us to test
ourselves – we were
asked to analyse and
respond to a number of
scenarios giving
thoughtful explanations.
The second session
focused on drug and
alcohol abuse. First, we
categorised drugs into
three groups. Then, we
discussed why they have
been placed in that
category. We also
watched a short video
explaining why people
use drugs followed by a
real-life scenario of a
teenage boy whose life
was taken away too
short due to his choices.
His ‘risky’ and
‘dangerous’ behaviour
not only impacted on his
friends and family but
also the bystanders,
police, ambulance and
coroner. Lastly we
watched a ‘grossed out’
video and I really mean
‘GROSSED OUT’ of the
effects, symptoms and
many other things
smoking can have even
on ‘passive’ smokers
who just inhale this
smoke. This video makes
you think ‘twice’ about
smoking as well as
making you feel
‘DISGUSTED’.
For the remaining two
periods, we had guest
speakers come in and
speak to us about a
number of issues. The
first guest speaker, Amy,
who is an expert on
brain damage spoke to
use about her profession
and the outcomes they
witness as individuals
recover from symptoms
of brain damage. Amy
was accompanied by
Mick who suffers from
brain damage. Mick told
us how we was out with
his friends one day and
at one stage needed to
use the bathroom. There
were no toilets nearby so
he decided to jump off
the rails thinking he was
‘superman’ but found
himself laying on the
floor unconscious. He
remembers waking up in
the hospital saying that
YEAR 11 CROSSROADS
THE BUZZ ISSUE 4
BANKSTOWN GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 14
they still hadn’t taken
him to the toilet. Mick
was in a coma for a few
months. His mother was
there by his side the
whole time and is now
his full time carer. Mick
is completely blind in his
right eye and only has
20% vision in his left
eye. As a consequence of
brain damage, Mick
becomes easily bored
and feels the need to
always keep busy.
However, he is still able
to socialise and engage
in activities. He attends
bowling three times a
week and visits his
nephews/nieces once a
week. Mick also told us
that he has always
wanted to be a PE
teacher. He left us with
some inspiring words of
advice and quoted “look
past the negative things
that have happened. If
you are happy now, that’s
all that matters. There’s
no point in worrying
about things that have
happened when you just
need to move past them
and continue being
happy with your life”.
Mick is completely blind
in his right eye and has
only 20% vision in his
left eye. He gets really
bored easily and feels
the need to always keep
busy. These are some of
the traits and symptoms
Mick has picked up after
developing brain
damage. However, Mick
still gets around
throughout the week as
he socialises/engages in
activities. He attends
bowling three times a
week and visits his
nephews and nieces
once a week. Mick also
told us that he has
always wanted to be a pe
teacher. He then left us
with some inspiring
words of advice and
quoted “look past the
negative things that have
happened. Afterwards,
Amy presented us with
two videos which
showed different
perspectives of brain
damage i.e. from a
carer’s perspective and
from the patient. It was a
privilege to have
witnessed such
experiences of
individuals who have
gone through these
traumatic stages of life
and their journey was
inspiring.
The final speaker,
Constable Danny Mc
Manus, informed us
about the legal
legislations covering
drugs and alcohol use.
We were given time to
ask questions to clarify
any thoughts,
perceptions or queries.
The day was insightful
and informative
allowing us to make
better choices. We would
like to thank the PE staff
for making this day
possible for us. We
appreciate your hard-
work and effort put into
making this day a great
success. Thank you.

Speech transcript by Natalie Veljanovska
Good evening ladies and
gentlemen. I am Natalie
Veljanovska from
Bankstown Girls’ High
School and I was the
nominated award
winner for the Zonta
Club of Sydney West,
Year 10 Citizenship
Award for 2015.
Firstly, I would like to
say that it is amazing to
see a global organisation
like Zonta International
encourage not only
young women but men
to support and empower
women worldwide
through service and
advocacy. I believe that
Zonta continuously
applies their time,
talents and skills to work
both locally and
internationally, on a
wide range of service
projects and advocacy
initiatives, to spread and
develop the financial,
professional,
educational, health, legal
and political status of
women around the
world.
Why have I been
selected to receive this
award? Am I any
different to all the
students in my school? Is
my school any different
to all the other schools
here today? Is my family
different in some way
from yours? All these
people are very special
to me, but I don’t see
them as different to me,
they are the ones who
supported, raised, and
guided me to have the
values and spirit that I
have and expect to see in
everyone.
I am a leader because my
family supports me, my
school promotes me and
my community inspires
me. I am a leader
because I embody the
qualities of
organisational skills,
trust and believe it or
not- I actually quite like
public speaking. These
qualities have been
demonstrated in my
involvement as a
member of the student
representative council,
peer support program,
Football United
Leadership Program and
the Buzz media team.
Our school also held a
school musical last year
which enabled all
students across from all
years to participate and
get involved in a
particular aspect
whether it be from
singing to dancing or
even acting. I also had
the opportunity in 2014
and 2015 to coach and
educate younger
students in my school by
engaging them in
sporting activities. Some
of the sporting events
include athletics carnival
and year 7 and 8 field
day. I believe that both
the school musical and
sports coaching sessions
enabled the students to
fulfil and reach their full
potential showing that
they can do anything
they want as long as they

put their mind to it.
I have the ability to
inspire those in my
community because I am
motivated, genuine,
honest and caring. These
traits were fostered in
my involvement in
International Day of
Sport for Development
and Peace Gala Day.
I am a very strong
advocate for social
justice and community
spirit because I believe
we start with our own
community as a point of
beginning world change.
My community projects
include Legacy Day
Volunteering and
promoting social
harmony day.
I also believe the youth
are the voice of our
future. I am young but I
care that people listen to
my message. I have
participated in youth
leadership conferences
that have allowed my
voice to be heard. I
believe if we all
participate and
contribute in some way
or another, big or small
we can get our message
across to the world. We
as a community want to
inspire people and by
doing so we want
someone to look up to us
and say “because of you I
didn’t give up”.
Thank you for
recognising me. It gives
me great pleasure,
privilege and honour to
receive this award. I
hope that I am like all
young people looking to
inspire, challenge and
change the world. I also
hope to keep this long-
lasting effect of
empowering women
worldwide through
service and advocacy for
many generations and
years to come.

Year 9 have been
inducted in the Making
Learning Meaningful
Project for 2016 and
are leading the charge
to make an impact not
only on the way they
learning but also in the
world they live in.
Students recently
selected their teams and
had Learning Coaches
appointed. They have
taken their firsts steps in
taking responsibility for
their learning by
choosing team members
wisely then negotiating
and finally deciding on a
global issue.
Once again issues such
as the environment,
politics, domestic
violence, radicalisation,
poverty, malnutrition
and many more. Year 9
are excited about the
prospect of exploring
and addressing world
problems; they want a
voice, a voice to effect a
change in attitudes
locally and nationally.
Year 9 want to make a
difference.
The brief requires all
students to work as a
team. They will use a
range of high order
thinking skills and a
project planner to allow
students to define, lock
in, collect & explore,
consolidate and refine
their campaign. All
students are required to
keep a Learning Log,
create a website and
finally produce a
campaign film.
Good luck Year 9.

this complex issue.
“Monique suggested it

Imagine this. You’ve been
FORCED to go to a sporting
game.
1. No idea what the rules
are.
2. No clue about the
players in this game.
3. Uncanny of all, you’re
going with two
teachers.
What do you do? Here is
what 5 Year 10 girls did.
On the 25th of June (yes, it
was on Saturday), five year
10 students were given the
opportunity to attend an
Ice Hockey game at Qudos
Bank Arena to watch a
showdown between
Canada and USA. Despite
the limited knowledge
about the game, we were
excited for the new
experience (and obviously
not the Bulldogs game that
took place afterwards).
Prior to the anticipated
game, there was an
exhibition game where we
had the privilege of
watching ‘The Great One’,
Wayne Gretzky (at the age
of 55) in action. By the time
the real game started,
everyone had become
interested. It didn’t take
long for Deane to quickly
adapt to the ice hockey
environment. She left those
around her with ringing
ears as her passionate
screams transformed her
into a patriotic Canadian.
After an eye popping and
jaw dropping game, the
audience were off their
seats when the results
were 3:3; this meant that
there was going to be
sudden death match (first
team to score wins). After
TWO sudden death
matches, Canada came
through and scored. With
the day sadly coming to an
end, we were happily going
back home knowing that
the hockey game was in
favour of the Canadians
and most (not all) were
overjoyed over the
Bulldogs win.
On behalf of the Year 10
girls who had the
opportunity to attend this
game, we would like to
thank Mr Ristevski and Mr
Owen who were the two
very lucky teachers who
were privileged enough to
spend their weekend with
students at the sporting
event. Mr Owen was the
teacher who teacher-
pressured us to go and Mr
Ristevski was the teacher
behind all of the
troublesome paperwork
and communication
between the organisations.
If there’s one thing we took
out of this experience, we
learnt that it’s not so bad
spending your weekends
with your teachers.

“Take care of your body. It’s
the only place you have to
live” – Jim Rohn
Are you conscious of what
you eat? That
cheeseburger that you had
today, how many calories
do you think it contains?
Undoubtedly, you know
that a cheeseburger
contains a lot of calories,
but you still disregard its
non-nutritious values. Do
you realise that it takes 64
minutes to burn it off
jogging and 180 minutes of
walking to burn off the 303
calories you had in that
cheeseburger?
If that’s not eye-opening
enough, according the
Australian Bureau of
Statistics, unhealthy diet
contributes to
approximately 678,000
deaths a year. In the last 30
years, obesity rates have
doubled in adults, tripled in
children and quadrupled in
adolescents. With this, it
becomes evident that the
importance of nutrition
has always been
controversial yet –
overlooked. Nutrition
refers to the process of
providing or obtaining the
food necessary for health
and growth. Nutrients is
categorised into
micronutrients and
macronutrients.
Micronutrient is a type of
food required in trace
amounts in a diet, vitamins
and minerals examples of
micronutrients.
Macronutrient is a type of
food required in large
amounts in a diet and
provides energy; it is
measured in joules.
Carbohydrates, protein
and fat are examples of
macronutrients.
Take a look at the picture
on the right; are you aware
that those are the amount
of intake for each types of
food consumed? The
amount of these types of
food consumed varies from
one person to another,
based age, height, weight,
gender and how much
activity or exercise one
does. Henceforth, do not
follow the same nutritious
diet as others. The picture
on the right hand side
displays the level of
consumptions one’s body
needs in order for a
balanced diet. As observed,
carbohydrates (grains)
and fruits and vegetables
should have the most
intakes followed by meats,
dairy and fats.
Evidently, eating healthy is
a prime examples of the
saying “it is easier said than
done”. The forum
presented on the 17th June
2016, encompassed all of
the above and engaged the
targeted audience – year
10 students. The forum
consisted of all the
important nutrients, fruits,
water, simple exercises
that can be done at home,
sleep, the high risks of bad
nutrition such as
cardiovascular disease,
and alternatives to a
healthier lifestyle and diet.
So next time you walk into
or drive through a
restaurant, ask yourself: is
it really worth it?
The foods you choose to
eat everyday affect your
health – how you feel
today, tomorrow and in
the future.
Remember: Prevention
is better than cure.
NUTRITION: PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE

Written by Sereen Omran & Angelina Kosena So. Stress. Yeah- people
totally freak out whenever
they hear the word exam or
assignment. Yet, there are
those other students who
couldn’t care less about what
this exam or assignment is
about. But gurl, you need to
understand that stress- can
be both beneficial and
negative *rolls eyes* I know-
like, no way- who wouldn’t
have known that stress was
also a benefit? Well, in some
cases it is- it could help
improve an individual’s
motivation to complete work
and to achieve their goal or
mindset. I bet you don’t
realize the number of times
you check Facebook,
Instagram, Snapchat or
whatever your vice is? When
you add it all up together, it
amounts to a significant
waste of time. (We’re all
guilty here)
But the focus here is the
need to survive the battle
between you and stress. *
insert signature war song
of tension here* so, the
battle begins once that
notification is placed in
your hand – and BAM!
What happens? *urges you
to answer* Yes! That’s
right- you’re attacked by
the sheer enemy of High
School life- the nemesis of
Stress. Sometimes we tend
to overthink everything
which sets us in panic
mode which leads us to
losing focus. Trust me, I
know, sometimes you’ll
find yourself stuck on a
Math’s equation that you
simply can’t find a solution
to and we all know you
won’t… Not until you give
your brain a break! (My life
in one sentence) SO… Here
are some tips that can help
relieve your stress:
- Listening to music
can create a positive
and productive
environment by
elevating your mood
and encouraging you to
study more effectively
and for longer.
- Taking a walk can
boost your memory
and brain power.
- Doing something you
enjoy can take your
mind off what’s
stressing you and that
way, you are able to
focus better when you
get back to work!
- Get enough sleep:
your brain can
assimilate new
knowledge into your
long-term memory so
that you can recall it
when it comes to exam
day.
- Give your mind
space: Meditation is
another way to
maintain focus, while
improving both mental
and physical health to
reduce pre-exam
stress.
- Eat Chocolate:
Chocolate releases
endorphins which acts
as a natural stress
fighter. (Angie: I
disagree on this- eating
chocolate? Stress eat.
Just Stress eat guys,
don’t just eat chocolate.
You won’t only get
good marks, but you’ll
regret it after gaining
that extra pound from
just chocolate. Eat
anything and
everything. Relaxation
done.*ticks off list*)
- Chewing gum can help
induce relaxation and
help you focus while
studying.
Hopefully by following
some of these steps, you
will be able to get back to
work with a fully focus and
a brand new organised
mind-set!

“Oh Romeo, oh Romeo;
wherefore art thou oh”
*insert iPhone ringtone*
Where’s my phone now,
that must be Jessica with
the latest goss?!
Welcome to my life. Your
average teen with a
smartphone device;
brick phones are so in
the 70s but I think they’ll
make their comeback in
another 5 years time.
I’ve gotten my Motorola
DynaTAC shipped,
rebooted and ready to
use. YES!!!
For the time being
though, smartphones are
all I have. Literally the
only thing I can rely on;
no parents, teachers or
boys. I have my dearest
phone; we’ve been
together for about 2
months now (that’s a
record, smashed it…
literally… oops).
Alright, now that you
know of my fabulous
phone safekeeping, let’s
get into the nitty gritty of
this “debate” shall we? I
could totally live without
my smartphone if I
wanted to. “IF I WANTED
TO”. Now why would I do
that? Discard and expel
this kind of sorcery of
our tech age, now that
would be a shame to do
especially because of the
plethora of information I
have been able to gain
from the sensory screens
(which are quite touch
sensitive but that isn’t
the point), the luminous
light that beams from
dawn to dusk, midday to
midnight.
Smartphones are the
epitome of our
millennial lifetime.
Access to governmental
records (the Australian
Bureau of Stats that is),
movies, music and books
(probably from 1 month
free trials) and state of
the art, real time news
right at the touch of a
fingerprint, swipe of a
home screen and taps of
the passcode because we
live in the age of
paranoia… My point is
that, well I could not,
would not and should
not live without my
smartphone. Aside from
the fact that it is
absolutely convenient
and totally better than a
human journal, it lets me
connect with the ones I
love because what’s not
to love about 4G and full
bars of reception?
Romeo and Juliet should
have gotten themselves
a smartphone, would’ve
saved them all that
trouble of having to
sneak around.
Here’s a challenge, stay
away from your phone
for 5 hours, not including
the hours you sleep?
Could you do this?
WE CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT SMART PHONES!
THE BUZZ ISSUE 4
BANKSTOWN GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 27
Written by Angelina Kosena
Smartphones. A world of
which technology has
quickly taken over our
minds, to the point
where we barely ever
have the chance to lift
our heads from looking
down. Trust me when I
say I’ve noticed nearly
our entire school being
consumed their phones-
in class students would
be asked to get off their
phones constantly and
be put aside- but heck, it
doesn’t stop them from
glancing at them from
under their desks on
their laps. Having a
smartphone isn’t
necessarily a bad thing,
it has it’s positive uses,
however there are
totally a number of
arguments for why
smartphones can be
lived without… *pauses*
Yes, I understand- most
of you would be
thinking- “… I can’t live
without my phone! It’s
like another limb of my
body…”- *sighs* But
come on- there’s more to
life than just our phones.
(Or not)
Smartphones can clearly
be lived without, they’re
pretty much a health
hazard when thinking
rationally about it. For
example, take me for
instance (if you know
who I am) Imagine a girl
sitting all on her
lonesome staring down
at something in her right
palm with an expression
that is hard to fathom…
Of course, this girl is
doing nothing but-
WRITING CHEAT NOTES
ON HER HAND FOR
EXAM WEEK!!! *insert
ghost face emoji* Nah,
just kidding- she’s
definitely on her phone.
This making a great
impact on society today-
specifically aiming this
at teenagers right now.
My first argument
against the use of
smartphones is that
(please don’t eat me)
homework is never
done. Yeah yeah, some of
you might be scoffing
and being like- “…My
phone helps me keep
track of my homework-
it’s my diary…”- well, no.
Just shut up
(#sorrynotsorry) It’s a
distraction- don’t even
deny the fact that you
can’t help yourself but
check your Instagram or
Tumblr feed for any new
likes on your photos
WHILST ‘doing your
homework.’ *scoff* Puh-
lease, I’ve definitely
heard THAT BEFORE.
Sure, using your phone
as your planner for your
school work and
reminders is useful,
since you always have
your phone with you, but
really? It sounds more
like another excuse to
look at your phone and
telling your parents that
you’re just checking
your timetable and when
your assignments are
due.
Heck, it’s even proven
that Australia as a whole,
is the 2nd ranked country
for smartphone
penetration- well, that’s
what the ‘Pew Research
Centre’ surveyed around
40 nations. It is recorded
that 77% of the
Australian population
own a smartphone.
However, 9 in 10
teenagers have internet
access- 89% of them
owning a phone, 69% of
these mobile phone
OFCOURSE WE CAN LIVE WITHOUT SMARTPHONES!
THE BUZZ ISSUE 4
BANKSTOWN GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 28
users have a
smartphone.
Considering these
statistics, it isn’t very
hard to distinguish the
fact that roughly,
teenagers are wayyyy
more addicted to their
phones than adults. We
all may be adolescents
and trying to live our
lives by the YOLO
concept (wow o.O I just
used concept and YOLO
together… ew) but we
also need to consider
living a life that includes
family and friends- and I
mean literally talking to
them face-to-face (not
texting them what’s for
dinner despite you both
being in the house).
Socialising is definitely
an important part of a
person’s life, but
socialising doesn’t
necessarily mean being
on social media 24/7. It’s
more along the lines of –
(speaks in a Regina
kinda voice) “… I have a
life that balances both
my virtual and real
character (flips hair)…” –
I mean people could
definitely live without
smartphones if the
apocalypse suddenly
broke through and the
Wi-Fi connections
anywhere were cut off.
Like before, we adapted
so well to having no
phones at all back in the
2000’s (chunky
computers for life) and
barely anyone had a
phone. We then adapted
to the infamous Nokia
phones, but then soon
after, accepted almost
immediately the fact that
they were radioactive… -
_- What this whole
article was trying to
trying to say is- life isn’t
always about our
phones… it’s more than
that, and I really think
that if we’re so easily
accepting of adapting to
new trends and stuff, it’d
be kinda easy for us to
put our phones away-
that is, if the whole
entire world would do
the same thing. No one
on social media and their
phones = a life where
socialising is actual
something real…
(Thanks for reading-
don’t eat me if you hate
me for this)

(Discloser alert: This is
just a title- I don’t
guarantee that you’ll
get the same results
that I did with these
products… just sayin
*grins*)
Apparently it’s a blessing
to have extremely long
and beautiful hair for
girls out there. Being
someone with an
experience similar to
that, (My hair’s thick.
*cringe* technically not
beautiful) I’m here to
recommend the top 10
products that I
guarantee will make
your hair much healthier
in no time. Heck-even
shinier ;)
1. So the first thing we
use obviously is
Shampoo. A variety is
really good, always
depending on your
hair- personally I use
Tresemme Shampoo
and Conditioner in 1,
but other brands
such as Herbal
Essence, Palmolive,
Pantene, Heads and
Shoulder and Garnier
are all very effective.
However, for faster
hair growth - I would
recommend using a
shampoo called ‘Pura
d’or Premium
Organic Shampoo.’
*nods
enthusiastically* It
works. I mean it. Oh
but get the one with
the Gold label- not
the blue. It doesn’t
smell as good LOL.
2. Then usually I would
use a form of shine
serum for my hair to
give it some volume.
Duh. The best Shine
Serum that I’d
recommend is the
‘Rusk Designer
Collection Sheer
Brilliance Smoothing
and Shining
Polisher.’ It totally
eliminates the frizzy-
ness of your hair and
adds a glossiness
without an oily look.
3. Then once every
other day, I would
apply some mousse
to make my hair look
‘appealing’ after
leaving my hair in
braids overnight. I
would definitely
recommend ‘Joico
JoiWhip’ which can
enhance curly hair. It
kills frizz and creates
shine whilst working
with all hair types.
5 WAYS TO GET HEALTHIER AND SHINIER HAIR
INSTANTLY!
THE BUZZ ISSUE 4
BANKSTOWN GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL 30
4. Before straightening,
curling or styling
your hair with heat,
I’d totally suggest
using a Heat-
protecting Spray. I
recommend the
‘Tresemme Thermal
Creations Heat
Tamer Spray’ to
protect your hair
from the bad damage
that is caused when
using heat on your
hair.
5. On a final note, I
suggest using
different types of oil
for your hair on a
daily basis. This will
help treat your hair
especially on days
you don’t wash it or
before you style your
hair. Oils like
Moroccan oil (My
personal favourite
XD) argan oil,
Rosemary oil and
Jojoba oil. They all
work very well and
even smell
AMAZING!!! *sniff*
So that is about it! As you
can see, I do a lot with
my hair. Though mind
you, it is only so long
because of years of just
leaving the hair to grow.
Don’t expect drastic
changes in hair length,
give it time for the
products to work well.
That is, if you do it in the
correct order. Enjoy!

This book is what I
honestly expected to be a

read the first 2 pages. I put
the book down for a good 3
centuries (like I do with all
books) until I discovered it
again *blows cobwebs and
dust off* *coughs* Ahem,
well, after that, I forced
myself to read it and what I
discovered through the
words on those pages was
a story about friendship,
bonding and trust. Loyalty
and survival. I congratulate
you John Marsden! IT’S A
MUST READ. Although
some parts may be boring,
no book is perfect but this
book is so close to being
just that! Beware of
extreme cliff-hanger,
however, the book

Rating: 3.5/5
Warning: Contains some
super lovey-dovey

P.S. They made a TV show

X-men Apocalypse Directed by Bryan Singer
Are you looking to watch
an action movie
produced by Marvel with
a number of attractive
actors who have super
powers? Well, this is for
you! You enter the
cinema and the moment
the red marvel sign
shows up you break into
a huge grin that gets you
feeling all tingly inside
(is it just me??). After
eight X-men movies
you’re probably still
wondering why
Professor X is bald and
maybe you’re just like
me thinking this whole
time he has cancer from
how much he uses his
brain. Well, I highly
recommend you watch
X-men Apocalypse to
find out the story! You’d
think Marvel movies are
all the same; always
having different groups
of superheroes at the
wrong times, or the fact
that some people
mistake the X-men for
The Avengers (yeah I’ve
heard that one before!)
*shakes head*. A movie
like X-men Apocalypse
deserves to be watched!
It is action-packed from
the beginning right to
the very end just like
how all Marvel movies
should be! Also, X-men
movies might be our
only chance to see
villains and heroes work
together. Even after
almost destroying the
entire earth, the director
was able to frustrate the
viewers and keep them
engaged for almost two
and a half hours! If you
ask me, this is as intense
as Marvel can get! So do
yourself a favour and
don’t miss out on this
well-crafted movie (with
attractive actors) and if
you’re still confused
from the past X-Men
movies…this movie has
all the answers. X-MEN
APOCALYPSE is full of
surprises XD.

you are, then you will
surely love the sequel as
much as the first one!
Finding Dory is a movie
filled with laughter,
awwweeeeessss and
tears as its just so
ugggggghhhh!
It started off with baby
Dory and her parents,
the perfect setting for a
tragedy to happen. The
film then takes a quick
walk down memory lane
to the first movie and is
then fast forwarded to a
year later as Dory lives
with her adopted family,
Marlin and his son
Nemo, alongside the
other members of the
sea from the first film.
That soon changes when
she is practically
“stampeded” by
numerous rays, hitting
her head pretty hard
triggering flashbacks of
her childhood, one of
which her loving parents
care for her despite her
short-term memory loss.
Soon, she and the two
clownfish are on another
adventure to find Dory’s
parents in California. On
the way to California,
Dory receives more
flashbacks of her
childhood which helps
them find her parents.
She encounters an
octopus named Hank,
whom helps her find her
parents. As much as I
would love to tell you

Okay. To be honest- I
seem to be a very critical
person about movies
being turned into books.
You can’t blame me for
that, but when people
tell you that they can’t
wait to watch a movie
and you personally think
that it’s going to be
horrible? Well. Sorry but
this is one of them.
Don’t get me wrong, but
the book was really
good. Fantastic really.
The storyline was what
drew me in and made
things flow well all
throughout. But when a
book is ended so badly
like the way it was in this
book- I personally shut
down and think to
myself- “… I can’t believe
I wasted my tears on
you! *sobs* …”
Me Before You, is about
Lou Clark and Will
Traynor. They’re
complete opposites
when comparing their
daily lifestyles: Lou is
perceptive and would
prefer to keep the future
to be unknown, whilst
Will did whatever he
desired and went
wherever he liked to.
That is, until the accident
happen.
The two meet in one of
the most unexpected
places you would think
the two would ever
meet. It’s not a story
about love at first sight,
more like a connection
that grew over a short
period of time. An
understanding.
Then it gets to the part
where I hate: the ending.
And how the characters
in the story handled it.
Heck I couldn’t even
handle it- and it didn’t
necessarily make any
sense to me. *sighs in
frustration* I mean, if
you think logically about
this ending, you’ll realise
how naïve and
unrealistic it is. But
that’s all I’m going to say
about this.
You may enjoy it, but
then yet again you could
be just like me and
question why this book
was rated so well. The
readers must be all
romance-addicts.
*cringe* Definitely not
my type. However,
despite my distaste for
this book, I would say
that I actually hated it
but loved it. The
storyline is what counts
the most I guess :)

Are you looking for a
drama/romance film to
watch that will make you
ball your eyes out and
turn into an emotional
mess? Well you’ve just
found yourself one! The
movie ‘Me Before You’ is
based on the New York
Times best-selling novel.
Louisa also known as
‘Lou’ moves from one job
to the next to help and
support her family. Her
cheerful and joyful
attitude is put to the test
when she becomes Will
Traynor’s caregiver; who
is a wealthy young banker
left paralysed from an
accident two years
earlier. Will decided to
stop living after the
accident believing there
was no need to move
forward as the accident
changed his life forever.
Will urges to die by
assisted suicide
(euthanasia) as he cannot
stand the fact that he will
be spending the rest of his
life in a wheelchair.
However, Lou and Will
form an unlikely bond. As
they spend more and
more time together each
day, their bond deepens
and their lives and hearts
change in ways neither
one could have imagined.
Will’s pessimistic attitude
and outlook starts to
change when Lou shows
him that life is worth
living even though his
physical abilities are
limited. This movie is all
about living boldly, living
well and just living life to
the fullest. Every day and
every moment in life is
precious and you
shouldn’t take it for
granted.
Yes, this movie will make
you cry. I certainly know
that at the end of the
movie, my eyes were
watery and I just couldn’t
resist. So you may like to
take out a few tissues
whilst watching.
If you’re contemplating a
cinema trip but you are
unsure of what to see,
allow me to enlighten you
with reasons why you
should take that leap and
buy a ticket for the
amazing ‘Me Before You’.
1. The storyline
The film definitely poses
several interesting
questions and it’s totally
possible that you’ll leave
the movie theatre with a
new outlook on life.
2. The characters
It features some of the
most well-written
characters (might I add
the attractive actors
playing those characters)
*fans face*.
3. The script
The dialogue used
throughout the movie is
simply wonderful,
especially the
conversations between
Lou and Will that
demonstrates the strong
chemistry between the
characters.
Me Before You is an
exceptionally touching
movie that is an instant
classic that you can watch
again and again. So what
are you waiting for? Go
see it! You definitely
won’t be disappointed!
