History of Thanksgiving
By Kaylee Harris
Have you ever wondered why we celebrate
Thanksgiving? We celebrate Thanksgiving because it
marks a day of new beginnings. The first original
Thanksgiving lasted three days. Ninety Native
Americans and fifty-three Pilgrims attended our first
Thanksgiving. The second time this holiday was
celebrated was to acknowledge the end of a long
drought. In today’s time, we celebrate Thanksgiving to
celebrate all we are thankful for by gathering with our
family, cooking up a big meal, and saying thank you. ∞

Caring & Sharing
By Brody Tubbs
Caring and Sharing is a club at SJHS that helps
students in need here at SJHS. They do fundraisers to
raise money for the Angel Tree and other help for our
students and also give back to the community. Soon,
they will honor our veterans by helping with a Veterans
Day breakfast. The Caring and Sharing club is also
participating in a shopping extravaganza which will
help our local vendors and give the students in this
club some time in community service. Good job
helping the community, Caring and Sharing Club!∞

High School auditorium.∞
Red Ribbon Week Recap
By Abagail Deuerling
This year’s Red Ribbon Week was a great success
and we had a lot of fun at SJHS. On the Friday before
Red Ribbon Week, we had a kickoff pre-rally for Red
Ribbon Week. Ms. Cardin and Mr. Cypert served as
MCs. Ms. Cardin told a story about how drugs have
impacted her family’s lives and Mr. Cypert talked
about how being drug free is possible and you can go
far without them. The cheer and dance squads
performed an amazing routine and the band members
played some good tunes to get us hyped up for Red
Ribbon Week. Student Council had a fashion show
previewing the various themed days . Fun games
were played and, overall, we had an amazing Red
Ribbon Week and had lots of fun while knowing that
we can stand up against drugs. ∞

Participants have started competing in the National
Level JROTC Leadership and Academic Bowl (JLAB).
During JLAB they will compete against more than 1700
other JROTC programs throughout America and
several countries around the world. There are three
rounds during the competition. The third and final round
is conducted during the summer in Washington DC.
Last year’s team made it to the second round but fell
short in the last moments.
Sergeant Major Dean says, “We are very proud of all
the Cadets and what they are doing to support the
community and the school district. It's a busy month but
hang in there; Thanksgiving will be here before you
know it. Hooah!” ∞

with Mrs. Smith.
This month's STAR Students are Zoie Autrey, Chris

we will do well.” ∞

extremely hard and that they have so much heart and
talent. The Blue and Gold game is on November 3 in
the Oliver Williams Gym. ∞
Volleyball
By Abagail Deuerling
The volleyball teams, seventh through ninth grade,
competed well this season.
Seventh grade is a learning year. They played well and
were coachable.
Eighth grade had more good games than bad. They
played well and are expected to be even better next
year. The talent for the team is at a great level of
experience.
Ninth grade had a great year also. They finished out
their season undefeated in River City Conference as
well as being River City Conference champs. The
level of play from these kids was amazing. Their
performance and drive to win made them the team that
they became for SJHS. They would like to thank
Coach Blend for being an amazing volleyball coach.

grew up. While in school, she was in choir, FBLA, and
National Honor Society.
Her favorite quote is “I can do all things through Christ

Caring and Sharing Week
By Brody Tubbs
Caring and Sharing Week is a service project of the
Caring and Sharing Club at SJHS. During Red
Ribbon Week, funds were raised by allowing
students to bring a dollar for listening to music or
going to a pep rally. Students could pay 50¢ a day to
wear a hat or attend a grade level basketball
shootout. Students could also put money into various
jars that teachers brought to give them a pie in the
face during the basketball shootout. Ms. Carl was the
lucky winner of the pie in the face. The overall
winners of the basketball shootout were Brock Melton
and Lauren McGinley. SJHS raised a grand total of
$2,818.60! These funds will be used, in part, to
purchase Christmas gifts for SJHS students on the
Angel Tree.∞
Pink Out
By Kassidy Bradshaw
The Sheridan School District showed their support for
the Susan G. Koman Foundation at the home game
between Sheridan and Texarkana. The SHS National
Honor Society helped to raise breast cancer
awareness by selling tattoos, pink ribbons, and pink
balloons for a balloon release which was held before
the game. The Sheridan Junior High Dance and
Cheer teams also sold ribbons and many students at
SJHS dressed in all pink for Pink Out. ∞

Book Review
by Mrs. Shannon Archer
“All Fall Down” by Ally Carter is the first volume in the mysterious
“Embassy Row” series. Grace is a sixteen-year-old who has
spent the last three years in and out of institutions, because her
mom “was killed in a fire.” Well, that is the public version; Grace
knows that her mom was gunned down by a man with a scarred
face. Unfortunately, no one will believe Grace.
Grace is sent to live with her grandfather, a powerful ambassador
on Embassy Row. Grace dreads returning to the scene of the
crime, as this was the last place that she saw her mother
alive. When she arrives, Grace sees the “Scarred Man,” and runs
to tell her grandfather that the man must be caught and made to
pay. With her grandfather’s refusal to believe anything except that
Grace is up to her old tricks, Grace must take things into her own
hands and avenge her mother’s death. With an exceptional cast
of foreign ambassadors’ children as Grace’s partners in crime and
a potential Presidential assassination, these teenagers are on a
mission to beat the clock and save the day.

bathrooms and SIS roof and cafe renovation is
scheduled to be completed during the 2017-18
school year. More serious projects include the new
East End Middle School which will start moving kids
over fall 2019, adding a 2nd story to the high school
to be completed 2019, and also adding a 2nd story
to the current middle school and fixing the first 2
hallways which is estimated to be finished 2020. ∞

driver’s license. To take the written portion of the
driver's test, you must be at least 14 years of age.
Additionally, you must request a transcript from the
school office allowing at least 24 hours for an
administrator to sign off on the transcript from the
previous completed semester. Your GPA must be a 2.0
or above and you must have good attendance with no
more than 8 absences. After you have successfully
passed the written portion of the test, you must wait a
minimum of 30 days and a maximum of a year before
going back to take the driving portion.

Sheridan will be Thursday instead of Monday. ∞
Beta Club Workshop
By Jenna Barnes and Carson Hardin
Eleven members of the 9th grade Beta Club attended a
leadership workshop held at the Clinton Presidential
Center on October 10. During the workshop, students
learned all about leadership, including several effective
ways of leading. Some things the speaker went over
were some scenarios about how listening can be just
as effective as speaking and how sometimes, things
that you do for other people without even realizing it,
can change someone's life. The workshop really
opened a lot of the students’ minds to becoming
effective leaders. While at the Presidential Center,
students enjoyed The Beatles Exhibit and learned a lot
about The Beatles rise to fame. After lunch, the
students toured Heifer International to learn about
Heifers’ efforts in rebuilding the world’s poverty-stricken
