It’s been a busy start to the term at Beresford Road with Art in the Dark and Multicultural Day to celebrate Education Week. It has been really fantastic to see the level of community involvement and support for these events. The children and staff appreciate you giving your time to celebrate with us. I believe that Art in the Dark is the best events we have at school. It is important for children to know who is in charge of the
family. At the same time children need to feel that they
have a voice within the family.
Getting the Balance Right
Parents often make the mistake of focussing too much on
being in charge without listening to children. Others can
allow children too much say in making decisions for the
family when they are not ready for such responsibility. The
right to discuss issues in the family naturally increases as a
young person gets older, but young children can still have
input.
Authority versus Democracy
The key to developing good boundaries is a balance
between authority and democracy. As children grow up
they are able to think things through in more detail and as a
consequence might be able to contribute more to family
rules and expectations. This is one of the rights that comes

to children when they have the skills and responsibilities
needed for the task at hand. It is the parent’s task to assess
when the child is ready to make more of a contribution.
Developing Values
The most resilient families develop broad boundaries that
help children understand what is expected from them in the
home, at school and in the community. These boundaries
help children develop values about what is right and wrong.
What kind of boundaries are we talking about?
There are some basic principles that are helpful but
obviously each family can add more to their list.
Be kind and respectful to other people or property.
Parents can have a discussion about what this means
- don’t hit, bite, scratch others, or say things to others
that will hurt them. Apologise when you are wrong or
don’t deliberately or carelessly damage property or
things
Act responsibly and as part of the family. Discuss
examples such as - don’t leave things lying around,
clean up your own food plates, look after pets etc

Office News
Money
As the school has grown a lot over the last few years, and
there is a lot more money coming through the front office,
we have had to change a few of our processes. Can you
please send all money to the class teacher and not directly
to the front office. The teacher will collect it each money
day. It is put in a special bag and brought to the front office
each day. This makes the process much faster and run much
smoother for the office staff. Money and permission slip
must be in a separate envelope for each student clearly
marked with their name, the excursion it is for and the
amount and handed to their class teacher. Money days are
still only Monday, Wednesday and Thursday morning by
10:30.
POP—New online payment system
We have had a few parents asking about the ‘Student
Registration Number’ section that is on POP. All students
receive a SRN when they register in a Government school.
You do not have to fill this option in when paying on POP.
Please ensure that you still send in the permission slip even
if you pay online. Payment alone is not permission for
students to attend excursions.
Absences
Please only contact the front office if your child is going to
be absent for 3 or more days. If your child is sick please
ensure that you keep them off school for the day.
Staff Car Park
This is just a reminder that you are NOT to park in the staff
car park. There was a letter sent home last term from Mr
Leydon requesting you NOT to do this.
Parking around the school
We have also had a phone call from one of our neighbours in
Bathurst street asking for me to put something in the
newsletter about NOT parking in peoples drive ways or
across them. We understand that it is very hard to park
around the school but it is illegal to park over driveways.
Please be considerate of our neighbours.
Due to teacher training
there will be
NO homework
club on: Week 4 the 10th August
and
Week 8 the 7th September
Use problem solving and communication skills when
you don’t agree with someone. Each family will have
their own way of dealing with problems. Some ideas
include raising it at a family meeting, discussing it
with a parent/adult, taking time out and thinking
about what might be the right thing to do, don’t say
things you will regret later etc.
Boundaries are for Everyone
Boundaries are for all family members including parents. If
parents also follow these principles, it will be much easier
for children to follow them. However understand that
children are NOT small sized adults. Sometimes it takes them
some time to understand concepts, to self regulate their
feelings and control their impulsivity. Be patient and
understand where they are developmentally.
Do you have a parenting issue that you might want to talk
through with one of our counsellors? For the cost of a local
call you can call Parent Line NSW – Free, Professional

Athletics Carnival
On Tuesday the 9th of August, a beautiful sunny day, Beresford Road travelled to Gipps Road for the 2016 Athletics Carnival.
The 800m was the first event and it was wet and muddy. This was a lot of hard work. The judges were calling all different
events at once including long jump, high jump, shot put and 200m. House groups were calling and cheering on their team
mates as they ran the 200m. There were so many 8, 9 and 10 year old kids running the 200m it was great.
After about an hour of 200m races the 100m sprint came next. Records were broken including the 11 and 12 year hundred
metres. Tommy Khouiss first broke the record with a time of 12.99 seconds and then Ethan Alimboyao broke the record again
with a time of 12.34 seconds. After all the events were completed the relay was held. Mackellar won the girls race and
Gilmore won the boys. After the relay was the finals where the top times would race again to see who made it into the zone
carnival.
It was fantastic to see so many kids participating in all the events. It was great to have everyone, including the parents,
cheering on their friends and children. Thanks to Mrs Lobb and all the teachers, parents and students who made this such a
successful day.
We wish the best for all the people going to the Zone Carnival.

Debating News
Debating this year has been a blast for the children in 5/6S. Earlier this year eight students were chosen to be in the debating
team for Beresford Road Public School. Megan Abood, Sarah Tame, Alicia Bidin, Chaitanya Sharma, Emma Yaghi, Jack
Eisenhuth, Bridie Austine and Piper Cole. This was a great opportunity for the students to learn about debating as well as
speaking and quick thinking. The four debates that were held all consisted of a different team of four students out of those
eight. We won three of those four debates.
This was a great experience for all of the kids. Here is what some of the BRPS Debating Team thought of the experience.
Megan quoted this to be “It was a great experience and it was really fun!” Chaitanya loved it and said “It was fun, friendly and
joyful.” Emma enjoyed this experience and stated “I thought it was fun and very exciting debating against other teams!” Jack
wanted to do it all again and he said that wants to continue this great learning experience in the future!
We encourage everyone to give debating a go because it was a great experience for everyone who participated. It also
increases loads of skills you could definitely use in the future.
Loraine Cause, our Kindergarten Assistant Principal has a wealth of knowledge and experience as a teacher K-6, Reading Recovery Teacher and current Kindergarten teacher trained in L3. She has offered to share her expertise with parents in a workshop. She will show you how we teach children to read and give you strategies to help your
children at home. The ‘How to help your children with Reading’ workshop will be held after the K-2 assembly in Week 5 (Friday 15 August) at 10 am in the library. Morning tea will be provided. Don’t miss this great opportunity.
