From Dawn’s Desk

When you receive this issue of the Chronicle, it will be Holy Week. In fact,

Wednesday, April 1, April Fool’s Day for many, is the day Christians figure that Jesus

was at the home of Simon the leper in Bethany and was anointed by an unnamed wom-

an in Mark and Matthew, Mary of Bethany in John, with costly nard. The anointing

caused a big disturbance about wasting an ointment which cost a year’s wages. Some

thought the money could be given to the poor, but Jesus reprimanded his disciples and

commended what the woman did. Hers was an act of loving kindness, preparing him

for his sacrifice. Hers was a proclamation recognizing Jesus’ ministry in the anointing as prophetic,

priestly, and royal in his sovereignty.

In some deeply profound and soulful way, the whole of Jesus’ life was like an April Fool’s ministry,

not by jokes and trickery, but by confounding expectations of what a Messiah is and who God is. The

Apostle Paul wrote: Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?...For God’s foolishness is

wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength…Consider your own

call…God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise… [God] is the source of your life in

Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemp-

tion, in order that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 1:20d, 25,

26, 30-31)

We’ve a story to tell, a Gospel to give witness to in both word and deed that challenges worldly

expectations. Think about the following:

True power is expressed in love – love your neighbor as yourself, love one another as I have

loved you, love your enemies.

About worry and anxiety, do not worry about your life. Strive first for the kin-dom of God and

God’s righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

No one can serve two masters. You cannot serve God and wealth.

Forgiveness is the way of Jesus, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

The way to find your life is to give it in service beyond yourself.

In everything do to others as you would have them do to you.

And this is eternal life, to know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom God sent.

Do not be afraid, do not let your hearts be troubled, believe in God, believe also in Jesus.

For God so loved the world, God sent Jesus to save, not condemn.

What might you add as Good News that challenges worldly expectations?

Blessings,

Pastor Dawn

Faithful Stewards Corner Our thanks to:

Becky Boisvert, for grant-writing expertise.

Calley Milne, for her work in coordinating the Thrift Shop Expansion.

If any ministry member has someone to mention for the “Faithful Stewards Corner,” send their

names to Pastor Dawn by the 15th of each month for the Chronicle.

Observing Holy Week and Easter at Brookside

March 29, Palm Sunday

- 10 am, moving service of worship, “Remember Me” (directed by Gary Trahan)

(We’ll gather on the front steps after worship for the 15th annual all-church

Palm Sunday photo, then we’ll assemble the Easter meal baskets.)

April 2, Maundy Thursday

5:30 pm, Agape Meal in Fellowship Hall, with discussion on Meals of Blessing.

7 pm, Service of Holy Communion and Tenebrae in the Sanctuary (child care avail-

able). Tenebrae is a very moving service of scripture readings accompanied by the

gradual extinguishing of lights. The readings commemorate the events of the final three

days of Jesus’ life and death. When the sanctuary is in total darkness, it reminds the

worshippers of Jesus’ time in the tomb before his resurrection. At the end of the service,

one candle is lit as the sign of Easter hope, and the congregation leaves quietly.

April 3, Good Friday

5:45 pm – Cross Walk, our third year of this meditative Good Friday experience. We will

gather by the Sanctuary front steps to begin a walk with some carrying a cross. We will walk

in silence, stopping at certain places along the way to offer prayers and change cross bearers.

All are welcome.

April 5, Easter Sunday

6:30 am Sunrise Service, Sanctuary Front Steps

7:00-9:15 am Easter Breakfast in Fellowship Hall ($5 per person,

$15 family max.; purchase tickets in advance or at the door)

10:00 am Easter Worship Service in the Sanctuary,

with Choirs and the Nottingham Brass

After Brookside Family Easter Egg Hunt for Grade 3 and under,

Worship Manning House

Plan on Easter Breakfast at Brookside Church!

The Youth Group will host the annual Pancake Breakfast on Easter Sunday,

April 5, serving from 7:00 to 9:15 am. Plan to attend for good food and fellowship

as there will be no coffee hour after worship that day. The cost is $5/person with a

family maximum of $15.

Church School Unit to Focus on Acceptance

On March 22 we ended the 5-week unit on “Meals of Blessing.” This unit had two multi-age work-

shops: one Music workshop taught by Lisa Brock, and a Time Out workshop taught by Fran Hakenson;

and three weeks of rotation workshops: Cooking taught by Amy Woloski, Games taught by Suzanne

Pyszka, and Storytelling taught by Scott Milne. There was a special workshop on March 29 for the

Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and First Graders. The other classes stayed in worship

for the special presentation of “Remember Me.”

Our next unit, “Acceptance,” will begin April 12. This is based on Acts 10:1-48

and I Corinthians 12:12-31. The Bible teaches that God’s love is for everyone and

that all of us are created in the image of God. The main idea of this unit is: as God’s

people, we should love and appreciate others and be willing to learn from one another

and work together.

Please Note: On Easter, April 5, there will be child care for children 5 and under.

Hunting for Egg Hunt Helpers

We want to have an Easter Egg Hunt again this year (for children in Grade 3

and under). To make this happen we need volunteers to help fill the eggs and to

hide the eggs. We will be filling the eggs Saturday morning (April 4) at 9:30, and

the eggs need to be hidden before the end of worship on Easter Day in order to

have the Easter Egg Hunt after worship. If you can help with this activity, please

contact Fran.

Called to Care – Care Packages for College Students

Do you have a child who is currently enrolled in college? If so, please provide us

with their name and mailing address by Sunday, April 5 (Easter), so that the Called to

Care ministry may send them a care package in time for final exams.

If you are willing to bake cookies or bring in other treats for the care packages,

please contact Sarah Duffley at [email protected] or (603) 858-4233. We will

be putting together the care packages on Sunday, April 12 after church.

Study Groups Offer More Insight into Bible, Prayer

~ The final session of “Your Bible!” takes place at 6:30 pm on Monday, March 30 in the Lounge.

Join Pastor Dawn and learn “What is the place of the Bible in our lives.”

~ The next unit of Companions in Christ, "Deepening our Prayer – The Heart of Christ" will meet

(as part of Monday Matters) from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the Manning House Parlor on Mondays, April 13

to May 18. If you would like to know more, or are interested in signing up, please contact Anne Rod-

man, [email protected], or 624-5179, so that she can order enough booklets for those attending.

NH Voices of Faith Prayer Breakfast and Vigil on April 1

The New Hampshire House of Representatives is scheduled to debate the state budget on April 1 and

2. Their proposal is certain to contain cuts that will put at risk many of the state’s essential human ser-

vices, as well as programs needed for public safety, transportation, and protection of the environment.

As people of faith, we call on our lawmakers to approve a humane budget, one that promotes the

well-being and fair treatment of all people, especially those among us who are the most vulnerable and

whose dignity is threatened by public policy choices.

Join NH Voices of Faith on Wednesday, April 1, for a prayer breakfast and vigil calling for a hu-

mane budget.

8 am – Prayer Breakfast, St. Paul’s Church, 21 Centre Street, Concord

9:30 am – Prayer Vigil, State House second floor.

For more information, contact Maggie Fogarty (603)224-2407, [email protected]

“Any proposed budget, then, should take particular care to adequately provide for those who are

dependent on the state for their standard of life.”

NH Council of Churches

Join Temple Adath Yeshurun for Holocaust Remembrance, April 15

On Wednesday, April 15, Brookside is invited to join Temple Adath Yeshurun for the Yom

HaShoah observance at 6:30 pm and the film Defiant Requiem. A documentary film honoring the

prisoners of Terezin, Defiant Requiem was directed by Doug Shulz and narrated by Bebe Newirth.

Nominated for two Emmy Awards, the movie was shown on PBS, BBC4, and Netflix.

This 2012 movie highlights the most dramatic example of intellectual and artistic courage in the

concentration camp of Theresienstadt (Terezín) during World War II: the remarkable story of Rafael

Schächter, a brilliant young and passionate Czech opera-choral conductor who was arrested and sent to

Terezín in 1941. He demonstrated moral leadership under the most brutal circumstance, determined to

sustain courage and hope for his fellow prisoners through great music and the arts. The story of Terezín

travels far beyond the general perception of a Nazi concentration camp. This is a film about how a rare

form of courage, hope, and survival sparked an entirely unique method of fighting Nazi oppression,

enabling the prisoners to maintain their dignity and humanity while battling the worst of mankind with

the best of mankind. The Nazi legacy of brutality is well established, but the Terezín legacy is virtually

unknown and is told dramatically in Defiant Requiem.

Following the screening, Dr. Nona Fienberg, Professor, Department of Holocaust and Genocide

Studies, Keene State College, will lead a discussion of the movie.

The evening is free of charge and open to all.

Holy Communion

The sacrament of Communion will be celebrated on Sunday, April 12,

served by: Mary Pratt, Ellen Tourigny, Scott Milne, and Denise Forest, with

Gary Trahan assisting.

Please note, we use gluten-free bread for Communion, so that those who

have a gluten intolerance may participate fully in the sacrament.

We Love Receiving New Members!

Welcome to April Dawne Knight and Matthew Longfellow who joined Brookside on March 22.

If you would like to become a covenant member of Brookside Congregational Church, please speak

with Pastor Dawn (669-2807, ext. 101 or [email protected]). A special gathering will be planned

when we have a group of folks who have expressed an interest in learning more.

If You Would Like to Schedule a Baptism

Please speak with Pastor Dawn (see contact info. above) to make arrangements for Baptism.

Take Care of Yourself

The Parish Nurse has hours here every week, on Thursdays from 10:00

to 11:30 a.m. in Room D. Avail yourself of blood pressure checks, health

information, free nurse consultation, referrals and more. Learn more about this

program by logging on to www.catholicmedicalcenter.org/community-health/parish-nurse.aspx.

Weather Policy: when Manchester Schools are closed due to inclement weather, the Parish Nurse

Office will be closed – and the nurse will not be here. We are confident, however, that this will NOT

happen in April (hope springs eternal…) – right?

If You’re Hospitalized…

Remember to call the church office (669-2807) if you want the pastor to know that you’re in the

hospital. Due to federal law, hospitals are not permitted to provide us with this information.

Share with Others: Loaves and Fishes Offering Is April 5

Remember, our monthly Loaves and Fishes offering is the first Sunday of every

month. Please bring non-perishable (and non-expired) food items to worship that

day, or leave them in the special collection boxes in the back hallway during the

week. Personal-size toiletry items are also welcome. All donated items are put to

good use by New Horizons via their soup kitchen, food pantry and shelter. Thanks.

Council of Ministries March 2015 recap:

We continue to work on finding and completing applications for grants that may help us fund a

number of different projects. Thank you to Becky Boisvert for leading this initiative.

Fellowship Hour and pancake breakfast will be held before the 10 a.m. Easter Sunday service.

We will not be hosting Fellowship Hour after church.

April 19th is Brookside Connection Sunday and Friendship Sunday. Watch for more information

in the near future.

You are encouraged to choose a different pew each Sunday you come to worship. It is a great

way to interact with folks you may not know or may not have spoken with recently. Remember

to extend an invitation for coffee and snacks in Fellowship Hall after worship!

There’s a Place for You as We Expand Our Thrift Shop!

Interested in participating in a fun short-term project at Brookside this

year? Thrift Shop Expansion has begun and your skills, energy and motiva-

tion are needed! Whether you are interested in volunteering to help, just

want to hear the news, or have a skill-set that can be leveraged for back-

ground support – we are looking forward to your participation.

By year-end 2015, Brookside will be expanding its Thrift Shop operations and merchandising space

into the Carriage House – currently occupied by the Music Room and Granite Pathways. We need your

help to make that move a success. On Sunday, March 22 we met to organize teams and tasks that need to

be accomplished over the coming months. Some of the teams include: Marketing, Communication,

Website, Outreach, Inventory Control, Pricing Planning, Inventory Collection and more.

If you couldn't attend the meeting, but are motivated to engage in the fun – reach out to Calley Milne

at [email protected] (603-296-5345) to learn how you can get involved. Any level of participa-

tion is appreciated.

Please seriously consider participating in this great adventure during 2015 – we need our church

community help!
