The People Smuggler

The UNSW Refugee Law and Policy

Crespigny, award-winning author of

The People Smuggler.

With enormous power and insight, The

People Smuggler tells a story of daily

heroism, bringing to life the forces that

drive so many people to put their lives

in unscrupulous hands. It is a gripping

portrait of a man attempting to retain

his dignity and humanity after fleeing

Iraq for Australia.

Court of Conscience The Law Society is seeking passionate,

informed and critical written

submissions from law students to be

published in Court of Conscience 2013!

Court of Conscience is an annual

publication run by the Law Society that

aims to give students and academics

the platform to express their issues,

praise and concern about social justice

issues, discussed and analysed in a

legal framework.

Submissions should be a maximum of

1500 - 2000 words in length and

are due at 5pm Friday May 24.

Examples of previous student

submissions can be found at http://

www.unswlawsoc.org/?q=courtofc.

in a submission, contact Katerina

Jovanovska at

Police Powers Q&A Forum Are you concerned with the current

state of police powers? Are you aware

of the recent reforms that have taken

place to policing laws, such as the

removal of the right to silence or the

use of tasers? How do you feel that the

police, as gatekeepers, respond to their

duty to protect society and enforce the

law?

As informed citizens and law students,

it is our duty to be aware and question

police powers and law reform. If you

have considered these questions, or are

interested in finding out more about the

reality of the intersection of police and

the law, come along to the Police

Powers Q&A Forum!

Thursday 18 April

18:00-20:00

The Forum will run for 90minutes, with

refreshments provided afterwards.

Laura J. Shepherd: (Why) Gender

Matters in Global Politics

Gender informs every aspect of

everyday life, from the clothes you put

on in the morning, to what you eat, do

and read during the day, to who you

sleep with at night. Global politics is

just another form of everyday life, even

though it might not feel like that

sometimes. In this brief discussion, I

will explain why and how ideas about

gender influence political practices at

the global level and it's so important to

recognise (that) gender matters."
