One Hundred Girlguiding Feet!

Bewdley Centenary Jam-boree-On-The-Trail

Wellies and warm, waterproof clothing were theorder of the day in mid-May, as no less than a hundred leaders and girls of Girlguiding Bewdley, to-gether with families and guests, took to the woodson our Centenary Jamboree-on-the-Trail. It was a murky twilight when we all met at the WyreForest Visitor Centre, with mist in the air and mud

underfoot, but we formed a huge circle and lit tea-lights to sing “My Little Guiding Light”, un-deterred!We then set out on our trek through the forest, and the rain began to come down. Alreadyboggy underfoot, the path became a squelchy bed of mud, which the children enjoyed hugely.Much stamping and splashing in puddles resulted in happy faces and muddy jeans, and oneyoung lady lost her wellie and had to be rescued from the mire. Meanwhile, as darkness creptup, the Bewdley Brownies were busy telling their Brown Owl their most lurid ghost storiesand giving her the heebie-jeebies. We had a great time, but at the end of the evening, we were all glad to get back to civilisationand the hot chocolate that awaited us at home!

I am writing this on the day after the last contractor’s lorry rolled out ofBewdley. Walking through the town this morning the shining new surface onLoad Street almost made me take off my shoes to cross the road, it lookedso pristine. The gleaming white lines were as sparkling as our carnivalprincess’s frock, the yellow markings were buttercup-bright, and the riversparkled and gurgled imperturbably on. So while there’s been nothing butpraise for the helpfulness of the contractors over the long-drawn-out work,“nothing in their time here became them like their leaving of us”, asShakespeare almost said. Now the Summer holidays loom and the town is at its busiest. We can expect plenty oftourists coming to see us; this year I plan to try and steer some of them to the bits theyreally ought to go and look at but rarely do. Wyre Hill is such a pretty road; there arewonderful little footpaths up from High Street with the utterly charming St Leonard’s Churchto see at the end of the walk, and almost everywhere up from the river has a view toappreciate if you look. Wribbenhall has some delightful lanes to explore with, of course, thereservoir to walk round. Do you have a favourite hidden corner? Let me know and I’ll see ifI can persuade Gary to photograph it for August’s Bridge.Talking of bits of Bewdley no-one sees, my editorial a couple of months ago in which Iwondered why we have no lasting memorial to our famous son, Stanley Baldwin, has sparkedsome interest. In this edition we have a letter from Earl Baldwin, grandson of Stanley, replyingto Robert Barbour’s letter last month. It would be good to hear what our readers think, so ifyou have an opinion on some lasting memorial to Stanley Baldwin, do write in and tell us.Letters, emails or photos, keep them coming! The address to send them is below.

Bewdley LibraryIt doesn’t seem five minutessince the last Summer Reading Challenge, yet herewe are counting down theweeks to the school

summer holidays with excitement or dread, depending on our circumstances.

Children are about to take a well earned restfrom their busy school year, but the ReadingChallenge enables them to practise theirreading skills over the summer and at thesame time puts them in control of their reading choices.

As usual, anyone signing up is challenged toread six books over the summer (with a littletime left over when school starts to allowfor holidays). When they have achieved this, they receive a certificate of congratulationand a medal. The books do not have to beparticularly thick or wordy; the children justhave to choose ones they think they can confidently finish. Up to two books returnedat a time can be counted towards their total, and there are also stickers and freebiesthroughout to keep them motivated.

The Challenge this year is space-themed;bring the kids along to the library to sign upwhen school finishes.

Glamorous Life of an Opera Singer Part 4This month I’ll tell you the true story of the tenor in the shower. Tenorsusually sing their whole role through about forty times on the day of aperformance, and then wonder why they don't give of their best when itcounts. This tenor wasn't that stupid, but he did like to sing in the shower. We were doing Mozart's Magic Flute on a tour of the eastern states ofthe USA, and today we were at a hotel somewhere in Florida. I wasSarastro, and the tenor was, of course, Tamino, and the opera was being

performed in English, though with surtitles, surprisingly - perhaps to put us off making up ourown words, of which more next month!

Anyway, our Tamino was in the shower, and singing over and over again his opening lineswhich were, "O help me, O help me! Will nobody hear me? O help me, O help me! Willnobody hear me?" and so on, after which, in the opera, the three ladies arrive having, indeed, heard him, and squabble with each other over which one will have him, for he, after all, is thetenor, and only tenors get the girls in the world of opera, apart from Papageno, of course, andhe is a baritone, but I think you know what I mean.

On and on he went, enjoying his shower, with, "O help me etc etc.," when there was suddenlya loud knock on his bedroom door and quite a kerfuffle as a loud female voice cried in aSouthern drawl, "Don't you worry in there, honey. I'll go and get the key and I'll have you outof there in no time."

The Garden PondSurprisingly, this is almost the perfect time of year tostart making a pond. As far as green gardening goes, you will introduce a habitat that is perfect for raisingfrogs and toads that will enjoy the opportunity of decimating your slug and snail populations. Building sizeis important; the bigger the better as space and budgetallow. First of all, decide on the liner; either a preformed shape, a waterproof material or concrete.

As a rough rule of thumb, any liner should be at least twice the depth plus the width on eachaxis of the proposed hole. Before laying the liner, smooth the inner surface, remove any peb-bles and sharps, cover with old carpet, cardboard or paper to lessen the risk of perforatingthe actual waterproof membrane. The location should be a sunny one, away from trees andthe ground around levelled, so that the pond edge is even above water level when filled; useplanks and spirit levels to be sure of a good result. It is useful to have a shelf towards theedge of the pond for marginal plants where newts and toads may lay their eggs. A shallowerend is good for basking fish and for small creatures and amphibians to leave the pond. Edgingof the pond requires aesthetic consideration, so that the liner is hidden, camouflaged bycreeping plants but the edges are secure from tipping. By starting now, water will be warmenough to support and establish plant growth through to winter. Introducing plants requiresthe same vision, patience and perseverance as does the main garden; lilies are an option, rushes, oxygenators, marsh marigolds and, just like the main garden, the final result will evolveover time. But, beware of expensive imported plants that may not survive in our climate andeven more, those that do too well and ultimately choke the pond. Adding a few fish maymake the pond look more interesting, but may also defeat the ideal of green gardening byeating anything that moves.

MISHEARINGI welcome the slight muddling of my hearing for its entertainment value. Indeed, I give it a thermal welcome, as Iheard on the radio some bigwig received on coming to Britain.Perhaps she/he was cosily received in the Retreat for Celery -you can understand celery needing a place to retreat from allthat noise in the chewing, can’t you?

On another occasion, I heard of a Teacher Cleared on 2 SexChanges - poor lamb, couldn’t make up his/her mind, I suppose. Bring back single sex education, I say.

Anyway, the Highlights Committee discussed at length themerits of giving him/her a season ticket to the local hairdressing salon. The idea was sternly resisted by People

Involved in the Silver Service. They liked grey/white/silver hair, and felt this use of publicmoney would lead to a spate of High Speed Spending. It was decided that a Pressure Tent for negotiations should be made, but unfortunately all that emerged was a Screaming Programmefor Victims of Post-Traumatic Disorder. I should love to know what the Graveyard ResearchGroup made of it all after their Survey of Fairy Safety.

Discover Bewdley 30 & 31 May

The sun shone, the town was bustling, the cafes and pubs were busy and thetown unofficially celebrated the end ofthe road works. It must have been Dis-cover Bewdley 2010. The car parkswere full and the Park and Stride facilitykindly provided by The Bewdley Schooland Sixth Form Centre was busy too. Many visitors took part in the inauguralSnakes and Ladders “game” around thetown. All the prizes were taken including the jelly snakes. Pete Waldronwho came up with the idea, landed onthe surprise snakes several times eventhough he knew where they were! Many competitors remarked that theyhad been to parts of the town they hadnot seen before. The Arts & Crafts Market along Severn-side North was a success and the Suf-folk Punch Shire horses on SevernsideSouth drew a crowd. The Museumfocus on bees and honey was very pop-ular and the Angel had a large crowd forits family fun day.Thank you all that took part and joinedin and we hope you had some fun onthe way.

Pub’n Club 2010Yet again the sun shone on the annual Pub’n Club regatta, as crowds gathered at the RowingClub from about 9am to watch crews from the town race down the river. 75 crews had enteredin total, making this the biggest P’n C so far. Costumes ranged from turtles to tutus, angels todevils, and supporters lined the banks on either side. The holiday mood was infectious, and the drinks were cheap!!Diddy Man’s Devils won the ladies event, The Freestylers were the mixed crew winners and themost junior crew of the day, The Rowpeds, won the men’s event. Congratulations to all the win-ning teams! Many teams had names reflecting the sport; the printable ones included: The 4 Oarsmen of theApocalypse, One for the Rowed and Watch in Oar. The winning teams are rewarded with ayear’s free membership of the rowing club, and we look forward to welcoming our new members! Melanie Gunn

Community NewsStanley Baldwin

I was sad when I saw some of thecomments about Stanley Baldwin inthe latest issues of The Bridge.Bewdley had stood by him during the early yearsof denigration that began in 1940, having knownand loved him as their local MP and admired hisideals of service and all that he stood for in public

life. As a Worcestershire neighbour once remarked, “There was never anyone like Stan. He wasalways so different from all other politicians!”

The historical reassessment, which former Mayor Robert Barbour says may be due, in fact took placea generation ago. Few leading historians now subscribe to the story of Baldwin’s “failure to rearm”.Even Churchill who unfairly castigated him in print praised him in 1935 for “the most formidableand tremendous advance in British defence“, and agreed in a debate in late 1936 that he had“fought and largely won” the previous year’s election on a rearma¬ment pro¬gramme. The seal onBaldwin’s reputation was set by the latest revision of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography in2004, which distils the best historical opinion. This confirmed that Baldwin in the mid-1930s laid thesolid foundations on which Churchill was able to build when war came.

The general public can be forgiven for believing the opposite, because of the never-ending diet ofdocu-dramas on prime-time TV about the “shameful” 1930s, and the radio programmes and pressarticles that likewise play into the old myth and promote the more satisfying heroes-and-villainsapproach over historical truth. There are a number of reliable biographies of my grandfather, whichmake these points. Professor Williamson, the foremost Baldwin authority, has written of theremarkable gulf between “historical assessments and the popular myth”. He began his criticallyacclaimed Stanley Baldwin in 1999 with the words “Few British political leaders have been sosuccessful and significant as Stanley Baldwin”, and goes on to add: “More nonsense has been writtenabout him than about any other modern prime minister”.

I think Bewdley can be proud to lay claim to the wise and principled statesman who steered thecountry through the hazardous period between the wars.

PENN & COACCOUNTANTS

ELDERLY TAX PAYERS You may be entitled to a tax refund.

H M Revenue have recently written to tax payers who received a repayment in previousyears, advising them that they are no longer required to complete a tax return. This is misleading, as tax repayments will be lost if no return is submitted.

We have successfully secured repayments for clients who erroneously believed that their af-fairs were correct.

If you have received tax repayments before, speak to Nigel or Tim, who will advise you freeof charge, whether a submission would prove beneficial.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 7th June 2010

Annual Council Meeting (Mayor Making)Councillor Paul Gittins was elected as Mayor and Councillor Liz Davies was elected asDeputy Mayor for the coming year by the newly elected Council. Five new Councillors werewelcomed - Councillors Linda Candlin, Anne Cox, Jenny Greener (also on the DistrictCouncil), Carol Gittins (who has been a Town Councillor and Mayor previously) and JohnLatham.

Mayor’s Sunday – 6th JuneThe Mayor thanked everyone who had attended the Civic Service including representativesof organisations in Bewdley and the scouts and guides (with their band) who had taken partin the Parade.

CTV in Town CentreCouncillors had previously expressed concern about the effectiveness of the cameras in thetown centre particularly after some anti-social behaviour causing damage to premises at anearlier Bank Holiday week-end. It was agreed to take up an offer to visit the CCTVMonitoring Room (now at Redditch) to see for themselves how the system worked and toliaise further with the Police to ensure a quick response to any incidents.

Wyre Hill Play AreaDiscussion took place as to the continued provision of this play area which the Councilwished to support in principle by using grant monies from the District Council to fund itsmaintenance. There were expressions of hope that a refurbishment of the equipment couldtake place in the near future.

Empty Shops in Town CentreCouncillors heard that there are presently seven empty shops in the town centre which givea poor impression of the town to everyone – residents and visitors alike. In Pershore, emptyshop windows are filled with art displays provided by local schools and groups. With theagreement of the District Council those premises can then have “relief” from business rateswhich otherwise can act as a disincentive to such occupation. It was agreed to look atsetting up a similar scheme in Bewdley.

Many garden and wild plants have floweredprodigiously this year. Our nurserymanfriend says that the very cold winter has“ripened” the wood of shrubs and treesenabling them to flower and fruit better. Ishall be revisiting the areas of bilberrybushes in the forest to see whether theirpretty little pink bell flowers have maturedinto dark blue berries – if there are plenty, I’llallow myself to gather some for a pie, leavingthe rest for small mammals, foxes, deer andbirds. Why are bilberries commoner in someparts of the forest than others? Maybe theanswer lies in the soil (bilberries love acidsoil) or maybe they have been pushed out ofmany areas by bracken or brambles.

This is a good time to do some ant watchingtoo. The big wood ants will be very busy onwarm days finding food for the young andbuilding or repairing the ant hills. On a hotday the nest may swarm, new queens andworkers moving off to start new coloniesnearby.

The New Community Discovery Centre isnow in business! It’s a wonderful, “state ofthe art” low carbon building with plenty ofroom for schoolchildren, amateur naturalists, community groups and special events for thepublic. The landscape still looks a littledevastated but over the next year will besown with a meadow seed mix and plantedwith woodland shrubs and a tiny orchard. The waste water from the building is purifiedin a reed bed and wildlife pond beforeflowing into a larger pond that will be usedfor teaching, and a sensory garden is soon tobe planted with plants offering a variety of

smells, textures, shapes and colours. Nextmonth sees its official opening but it isalready being pressed into service to hostschool groups and training courses.

If your group would like to hire the building, please get in touch with Liz on (01299)266929 or [email protected].

At the end of the month, the schools willbreak up and the Discovery Centre will beoffering activities on Tuesdays and Fridaysduring the holidays:

Tuesday 27th Fun with CharcoalMake charcoal on the fire and use it to drawa souvenir picture of the forest. Bring asyrup tin if you can.

Friday 30th Tracking for TreasureMake tracking signs and follow a trail todiscover the forest’s treasures. 10.30am to 12.00noon for both events.£3.50 per child, ages 5 – 11, bookingessential.

Wild in Wyreis a week of fun and adventure for 8 – 11year olds from 26th to 30th July, withshelter-building, camp cookery, and makingbows and arrows. It costs £60 per child –ring 01299 266929 for more information.

Living Wildruns from 2nd to 5th August and offersthe same kind of experience for 11 – 16 yearolds. It includes a night sleeping in theshelters that participants have builtthemselves and an opportunity to worktowards the John Muir Award. It costs £100each.
