Beauty with heart: Fair trade example

Community fair trade of Shea butter in Ghana. Shea butter is extracted from the

kernel of ripe shea fruits by hand. The raw butter is heated to remove impurities and

allowed to cool before it is shipped to Europe or kept in storage for the dry

season. It takes one woman two days to extract 25kg of shea butter. The Tungteiya Shea Butter Association is made up of over 475 women in 11 villages around Tamale, northern Ghana. Money from their trade has been used to fund water pipes and

wells, and provide access to medical care, better housing and education.

Our trade gives over 475 women a regular income and provides communities with access to sanitation, medical aid and other necessities

Beauty with heart: Fair trade example 2Community fair trade tea tree oil from Kenya:

The Kenya Organic Oil Farmers' Association (KOOFA) is made up of 380

small-scale famers, half of them women. Due to AIDS-related deaths, many of these women are supporting their family alone. Growing tea tree helps all its farmers to earn a steady

income.

“Many people in remote, rural areas of Kenya don't have reliable access to safe, clean drinking water. Our trade with KOOFA enables it to work on projects that improve the amount of clean water its local communities can drink.” – The body shop

The body shop – save the planetThe body

shop have a strong

commitment as well as

a strong awareness

of its companies

aim to reduce the

energy they use.

We're committed to reducing our impact on the environment by reducing the energy we

consume and generating less waste. We take full responsibility for the way we run our

business. We're using our global network to help change attitudes around the world. And

we're building on positive efforts already being made by our suppliers, franchisees, colleagues

and customers. – the body shop

The body shop – save the planet, goals and objectivesThe body shop has set itself goals such as to measure their

performance against 2010 and previous years to see the consumption levels. And furthermore have set long term goals

for the year 2020. This includes:- 2020 to reduce the direct impact of our operations in stores,

offices and distribution centres- Reduce our CO2 emissions from these activities by 50 per

cent, including emissions from electricity, gas and diesel consumption, transporting product from distribution centres

to stores, and business travel.- Reduce our electricity consumption for these activities by

50 per cent. We're targeting electricity because it's a key contributor to CO2 emissions.

- Reduce our domestic water consumption by 25 per cent. Water is an increasingly scarce resource and we want to

make sure we don't waste it.- Reduce our waste from these activities by 50 per cent. We

want to reduce all the waste created by our stores, offices and distribution centres. And we mean all the waste we

create – everything. But we're also counting on you to help by recycling our product packaging.

Page 9: The body shop business powerpoint

The body shop – save the planet – actions removing low-efficiency lighting in stores and replacing it with LED lighting which uses much less electricity and lasts longer. Trials in stores have shown that we can save up to 25 per cent either by using new technologies, or simply using less lighting.

Automatic Meter Readers (AMRs) which track energy usage. The data from AMRs shows exactly how our employees can reduce consumption through direct action. Our best-performing stores

have saved as much as 10 per cent on previous bills.

reduce the emissions from business travel by encouraging video-conferencing, and by choosing company cars with low emission

levels. The average for our whole fleet is now less than 130g CO2/km.

At our Littlehampton HQ, we've installed a large roof-mounted solar PV system. It's so big that it provides almost 25 per cent of the site's electricity needs. We also have plans for a new wind turbine in Littlehampton and solar panels at our US HQ.

The body shop – save the planet: Eco conscious symbol

The body shop are so conscious of the planet

that they have also come out with a range of products which are aimed to do little as

possible damage to the planet. These products in store will have the

eco conscious label on them. They have been continuing to live by

their name and creating products with the

environment in mind

The body shop – save the planet – actions: wastage

1)We're looking into how we can better dispose of reject products by splitting them

back into their component parts – composting the contents and recycling the

packaging. When complete, this will eliminate the need to land-fill rejected stock.

In our HQ in Littlehampton we no longer send any office waste to landfill – it's all sent

for recycling.

2) Most of the water we use is for domestic purposes, so we minimise use through low-flush toilets, metering

and other devices. We've also formulated products that have minimal impact on the aquatic environment,

like our Earth Lovers™ range.
