We have had some tricky weather impacting on sporting events so please check for the new dates in the com- ing newsletters and on our school Facebook page. We are hoping the cross country can run tomorrow. I look forward to seeing many of our families tomor- row at our Easter Hat Parade. It's a great community event and a lovely way to end the school term. This Friday we will say goodbye to one of our staff who has been a part of Bidwill for a long time. Mrs Cox has accepted a substantive Assistant Principal position at Crawford PS commencing Term 2. While this is great news for Jacqui she will be greatly missed here at Bidwill PS, we wish her all the best in her new adventure!! Mrs Cox will send a note home to her class introducing their new teacher. Our school will hold an ANZAC assembly on Thurs- day April 27th, families are welcome to join us. On April 9, 10 & 11, year 3 and year 5 students will be completing the NAPLAN assessment. Students will be doing practice exams in preparation for next term. Have a safe and relaxing school holidays. We look forward to a great Term 2. Mrs Toni Thomas Debating Today Bidwill Public School played host to Rooty Hill Public School at the first Mt Druitt district debate of the year. Both teams had strong arguments for or against the topic ‘Sisters make the better siblings’ however Rooty Hill PS won out in the end. Our year 5/6 audi- ence did a tremendous job listening attentively to the debate and showing the visiting school our respectful behaviour. Bidwill Public School’s Scientist In Making Mikaere (K-6 Blue), an SRC member is a budding scientist. He wishes to share his recent research on the ‘Axolotl’ with you. Description: The Axolotl (Mexican Walking Fish) can sometimes travel on land as well as water, although this is rare. Axolotl (meaning water dog) is not a fish. It is a salamander. It is found in Lake Xochimilco in Central Mexico. Axolotl can be various colors, including gray, shades of brown, leucistic (white with black eyes), golden albino, white albino, and near black. It breathes through its skin and three feathery gills (on either side of its head). Mikaere, “I used plasticine to make the 5 stages of the Axolotl”. Life Cycle: Stage 1 is the embryo surrounded in jelly-2 mm in diameter. Stage 2 is the embryo right before it hatches-11 mm in diameter. Stage 3 is the young larva before it has grown any limbs. Stage 4 in about two weeks, the axolotl develops fore limbs (front legs) followed by the hind limbs (back legs). Stage 5 the axolotl is a miniature adult, until it dies at about 12-15 years of life. Food: Axolotl is carnivorous, it swallows worms, insects, and small fish. A bit more: The axolotl can regrow most of its body parts (arms, legs, or tails). “Hope you liked learning about the Axolotl. I am in year 2 and I study in K 6 Blue. More from my lab later. Happy holidays to you”, Mikaere.
