• If you are new to Grace Cathedral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We’re glad you’re here!

• Join us for coffee and conversation across the plaza in the Chapter House Library after the 8:30 a.m. service or in the Chapter House Dining Room after the 11 a.m. service.

Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new.

If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut.

We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: “What do I need to receive? What do I have to give?” We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey!

– The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cathedral

Welcome to Grace Cathedral

about today’s readingsIsaiah 43:1-7; Acts 8:14-17; Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 Reading texts can be found at the end of the service leaflet.

Water: think about how vital water is in your life. It nourishes you, cleanses you, revives you. With the drought and the wildfires, we all collectively know how important water is. And of course, we are all baptized with water when we join the Christian community.

Each of today’s readings touch on water or baptism. In the reading from Isaiah, God is our protector. God protects us from floods and rivers and fires because God loves us and is always with us.

In Luke’s story of the baptism of Jesus, when John baptizes Jesus, something happens. We’re told that heaven opens and the Spirit descends on Jesus. John tells the people that he can baptize with water, but Jesus can baptize with the Spirit. In Acts, the new believers receive the Spirit from Peter and John, after having been baptized. Water and the Spirit are now interconnected with baptism.

Last year we had baptism here at Grace and people gathered in the back of the church. Because of where I was standing, I could see the light sculpture of Jacob’s Ladder, and as people were being baptized with water, I could see angels going up and down the ladder between heaven and earth. All of us renew our baptismal vows at baptism. Perhaps for all of us, this moment can be an opening to heaven.

Holy BaptismThe Baptism of Our Lord Jesus Christ • 13 January 2019 • 11 am

Welcome to Grace Cathedral on this Sunday when we Baptize children into our life together in Christ. This service involves some movement. When we move to the font at the entrance to the Cathedral, we ask all who are able to exit the pews and come gather around the font at the entrance to the Cathedral. The baptismal parties will move down the center aisle with the vested ministers, others use the side aisles to be part of the gathering around the font.We respectfully ask that we all put our cameras away before the service, and refrain from taking videos or photos for the duration of the service—even while the most beautiful grandchild in the world is being baptized. Clergy will be available immediately after the service for photos at the font with your family. Thank you for being part of Grace Cathedral on this festive day.

Ask an usher about child care and Sunday school, hearing assistance devices, or large-print leaflets. Restrooms are located on the lower level corridor. Please silence any audible electronics.

Open their hearts to your grace and truth. Lord, hear our prayer. Fill them with your holy and life-giving Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Keep them in the faith and communion of your holy Church. Bring them to the fullness of your peace and glory. Lord, hear our prayer. Presider Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your

Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever.

All Amen.Thanksgiving over the Water

Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Presider We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit

moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever.

All Amen.

The Readings

Isaiah 43:1-7

But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear,

for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the f lame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my sight, and honored, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, “Give them up,” and to the south, “Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth— everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”

Acts 8:14-17

Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they

sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Luke 3:15-17, 21-22

As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John,

whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, ‘I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.’

Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’
