BY KIMBERLY WARD GRAHAM Education columnist I am a self-proclaimed information junkie. A few weeks ago I visited Hearst Castle. I had never been and really knew little about it before I had arrived. After taking the tour, walking the grounds, and hopping a bus back down to my car, I immediately was on my phone doing some research. William Hearst seemed like a rather, how do I say this, controlling personality, and I wanted the real dirt. I spent most of the car ride home Googling various search words — scandal, Hearst, money, affairs — and reading them aloud to my travel buddy. Did you know that Charlie Chaplin was shot while on one of his yacht parties? Well, rumor has it anyway. I got what I needed. I felt satiated with my result findings (which by the way, confirmed my gut feeling), and could then go about my day. Now that I’m technology rich in my classroom, through a very generous donation of iPads, I’m diving a little deeper into how this generation learns — the millennials or Net Genera- tioners. What is their learning style? What are their characteristics? How can I, as an educator, adapt to their distinctive traits? This is the first gen- eration to grow up with digital and cyber technologies. They have been saturated with media and have easy access to technology. All information is quickly and readi- ly available, which makes immediacy a learning need of this generation. Typical teaching styles tend to lean towards delaying gratification in learning. I’m guilty as charged. When I’m asked a question in class that I don't know the answer to, I say, “I’ll get back to you on that.” Or better yet, “Great question. Can you report back to the class on that tomorrow?” With the imme- diate access to the Internet in my classroom, they get the information they crave. needs of our students. Ifmy students expectimmediate answers, whynot allow them the inde-pendence to seek it?Their Generation Xteacher certainly suffersfrom the same desire. Iwanted rapid facts on theins and outs of HearstCastle minutes after mytour, not after my two-hour drive home.
This generation’s wishfor lightening speedaccess to knowledge hasbeen granted in my class-room. And my school'smotto of creating lifelonglearners has been ignitedin a whole new way.
