Awarded to an artwork addressing the subject of sport, the prize recognises contemporary artists whose practices engage with the theme, and encourages ambitious departures into new fields. The prize is open to artists working in any style and in a broad range of media including photography, film, painting and sculpture. Since it was first published in 1972, Learning from Las Vegas has become one of the most influential architectural texts of the twentieth century. The Surfer and the Mermaid 1

Following the success of its sell out premiere at the Bleach Festival in 2012 and its critically acclaimed 26 performance season at the Bondi Pavilion in Sydney. The Arts Centre Gold Coast in partnership with Connecting Southern Gold Coast and the Bleach Festival in 2013 will present the return season of The Surfer and the Mermaid. Directed by Melinda Collie Holmes and starring Luke Townsen as the Surfer, written and adapted for the stage by surf writer Tim Baker with images by surf photographer Ted Grambeau this is an extraordinary children’s piece with a powerful environmental message that will delight and inspire children and their parents.

Animal Farm, one of the most controversial and studied political commentaries arrives in a brand new production combining physical theatre and storytelling. Two sets of identical twins are separated at birth when they’re rescued from a shipwreck. And when they end up in the same shifty, transitory port‐town of Ephesus fully grown, we join them on their bizarre journey of reconciliation. As they collide unknowingly with each other’s friends and family, it’s not long before this absurd tale of mistaken identity and far‐fetched coincidence unfolds in chaotic hilarity.

The Arts Centre Gold Coast presents CDP with Tall Stories’ magical musical adaptation of

room on the Broom 4 Based on the award winning picture book by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler, published by Macmillan Children’s books

The witch and her cat are flying happily on their broomstick – until a stormy wind blows away the witch’s hat, bow and wand. A helpful dog, bird and frog find the witch’s lost things, and they all hop on the broom for a ride. But this broomstick’s not meant for five and – CRACK – the broom snaps in two! When a hungry dragon appears, who will save the poor witch? And will there ever be room on the broom for everyone?

Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast Youth Arts Program

Queensland Theatre Company Junior ResidencyThe Junior Residency is a collaboration between The Arts Centre Gold Coast and Queensland Theatre Company to offer an opportunity for Gold Coast theatre enthusiasts aged 8 – 13 years to learn a range of performance skills and to experience new activities from established professional facilitators.

This five day extension program offers development in dramatic acting, characterisation and voice and has been developed exclusively for The Arts Centre Gold Coast. The students receive coaching in vital performance and theatrical skills which promote self-worth and help build confidence in a safe and professional environment.

A free Showcase Event will be held for the family of the students on the final day with each student acknowledged and presented with a certificate of participation by The Arts Centre and Queensland Theatre Company.

YOUTH THEATRE PROJECTIn 2010 The Arts Centre Gold Coast forged an ongoing collaboration with Queensland Theatre Company to provide professional direction for the Gold Coast’s young emerging actors. Each year since, The Centre has produced and QTC have directed a selected text based piece of theatre with the emphasis being on engaging the best possible Director to guide the cast toward extension and excellence

In 2010 under the direction of Jason Klarwein Oh,The Humanity and other Exclamations! a Will Eno play was extremely successful and critically acclaimed by audience goers.

In 2011, Jennifer Flowers directed the project, assisted by The Centre’s Artist in Residence, Monette Lee. The Good Doctor by Neil Simon was an incredibly funny and well received piece.

In 2012 under the direction of Andrea Moor and assisted by Artist In Residence Jessica Westhead the Gold Coast’s young actors had the opportunity of auditioning for a role in the heartbreaking story of Eyes To The Floor by Alana Valentine.

The 2013 Youth Theatre Project will be an equally powerful experience for young pre professional actors looking to extend themselves and place themselves under the professional direction of Queensland Theatre Company within the walls of The Gold Coast’s own Arts Centre.

Queensland Theatre CompanyYoung actors studioThis year The Arts Centre Gold Coast will collaborate with Queensland Theatre Company to offer a new and unique opportunity for the Gold Coast’s serious young actors aged 14 - 18 years to learn a range of performance skills and to develop insights in to the industry from established professional facilitators. In 2013 participants will work toward delivering scenes from a selected play.

The five day extension program will cover audition techniques and industry protocols, character creation and approaches to text and culminate in a free Showcase Event staged on the evening of the final day of the workshop.

Each actor will be acknowledged and presented with a certificate of participation by The Arts Centre and Queensland Theatre Company.

Are you MAD for the Arts?MAD Camp provides an opportunity for creative young people to come together to develop and extend their skills and abilities in a range of arts practices.In association with The Arts Centre Gold Coast, Artslink Queensland will deliver a 6 day, multi-arts intensive residency program for young people aged 10 – 15 years during the January school holidays.
