Why is the church in Arjeplog pink? When did the priests stop producing and selling alcohol? The answers to these and many other questions were given by the local vicar, Anders Mattson when he changed his role from priest to lecturer for a group of locals last Sunday.

Th e history of the church goes all the way back to the 17th century. It all began when a Saami found silver in the Nasa Mountain in the western part of Arjeplog.

Th e government had found their own ‘colony’ and started the process of ‘civilising’ the locals. Priests were sent to Arjeplog to teach them Christian ways.

In 1641 the fi rst church was built where the church stands today. It was placed on the little peninsula because most visitors came by boat in those days. Th e present church was opened in 1768.

Th e church was built following an order from Queen Christina. She wanted to show that this was indeed Swedish land. Neighbouring Norway belonged in those days to hostile Denmark.

Th e church in Arjeplog played a central role in the society and was much more than just a place for religious worship. It doubled as a school, a court-room and anything else that required a large hall. Th is is true even today and concerts and other events are often held here.

In the beginning it was compulsory for everyone to attend church services, and it was totally acceptable for the priest to produce and sell alcohol.Th is practice was eventually stopped

and church attendance dropped signifi cantly.

This & That• Th e ice tracks in Kiruna are to be closed down. Six years ago Kiruna municipality, situated 450 km north of Arjeplog, invested 40 million SEK to make ice tracks on a marshland. Th ey thought that the ice would form sooner than it would on a lake. PG Sundström, former manager of the proving grounds association warned them that it was not such a good idea and he was right.

Th e ice tracks did not have the right qualities so their idea of competing with Arjeplog and Arvidsjaur for winter testing has now been scrapped.

• Th e Swedish Agricultural Board have proposed a tax on meat hoping to reduce the amount of meat Swedes consume and thereby reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere.

Swedes eat more than 85 kilos of meat per person and year, among the highest in Europe. Th e proposal has been met with massive criticism from the government and the public.

Th e Silver Star never hit the skies. Instead it seems to be a fallen star. Last spring, after the car testing season, Jan Edvardsson, the then CEO of Silverhatten, Kraja, Silver Lodge, Silver Eagle, Silver Wolf and other companies (all part of the Silverhat-ten Concern) in Arjeplog, was fi red on suspicion of fraud. He has been replaced by Johan Sund.

Edvardsson contacted a friend, Jan Marklund, who decided to buy Icemakers apartments that are situated a couple of hundred metres west of Hotell Silverhatten, in order to build a brand new hotel there.

Th e plans were presented on internet and locally, furniture ordered and construction began. Th e only problem was that the authorities, Silverhatten and some locals objected to the project for a variety of reasons. Th e building permit was not approved and Jan Ed-vardsson and Jan Marklund suddenly withdrew their plans and left Arjeplog. At the moment, the only thing left of the planned 90 million SEK hotel is a large area of destroyed forest.

Edvardsson is now operating in Arvidsjaur. Some of the event compa-nies including European Sports Car and Audi Driving School also moved their events to Arvidsjaur. In the local

paper Arjeplogar’n Edvardsson is quoted saying that he did not try to take these companies from Arjeplog, but that they asked to leave Arjeplog on their own.

What will happen to the plans of a Silverstar hotel is written in the stars.

Th e police are still investigating the suspicions of fraud and eco-nomic irregularities against the former managing director of the Silverhatten concern.

A truck fi lled with Korean food nearly ended up at Hotel Laponia in Arvidsjaur.

Korean Food Lost in LaplandLast week a truck loaded with four tonnes of Korean food caused a stir in Arvidsjaur. Th e truck driver was sure that the food was destined for Hotel Laponia and went there to unload his cargo.

Th e staff at the hotel thought at fi rst that possibly they had Korean guests who might have ordered some noodles or other similar foodstuff s, but when they were told the the load was six Euro-pallets of food they realised something was not right.

In actual fact, the food had been sent to Arjeplog to one of the two private Korean restaurants that operate here

during the season. Th e truck driver probably mistook Laponia (hotel) with Laponia = Lapland.

• Th is chimney, with smoke billowing out of it, is in the industrial area, and part of the new district heating plant that the Kommun installed last year.

Th e former plant was old and it became necessary to intall a new one and although there have been some problems adjusting the new one, it works well now and heats up most of the central areas of Arjeplog.

District heating has undergone steady growth over the years and accounts for more than half of all heating for homes and other premises in Sweden.

What is good in Arjeplog?Th e fresh air, especially coming from a big city like Paris, I really enjoy the fresh air here. And I like the landscape with all the snow.

What is bad in Arjeplog?It gets dark much too early. I was here just before Christmas in December and it was so dark. I think it is much better in March.

What music you enjoy?All kinds of music, especially rock.

What is important in life?To fi nd a good balance between family and work is important. Also, to spend time with my friends.

It is a lovely shade of pink and most people fi nd it very appealing, but not everyone.

You may wonder who made the decision to paint it pink? Anders says that he believes it was the priest’s deci-sion and it was for practical reasons. All the houses in Arjeplog were red with white trimmings, therefore the only available paints at the time were red and white. Mix them together and you get pink.

Th e church is open every day between 8 and 16 and you are very welcome to come in and enjoy the peaceful silence. You can also see the interior with its blue ceilings, the paintings and the artifacts.

Travelling around the world and seeing how others have solved their problems and the challenges they face

always gives you new insights. Now that we are struggling with the economy of the Kommun (municipality) - which is a big concern today - it is useful to be able to compare with other places. Trying to learn from others, to understand their lives and to put ours in relation to theirs is necessary.

One of the things we are working on in Arjeplog is how the town centre looks and how it is perceived. Right

now, we are trying to fi nd the money to fi nance a project in which government and county funds as well as private companies can jointly take responsibility for a cozier and more inviting town centre.

During the Christmas and New Year holidays, my family and I went on holiday so that we could spend time

together. However, since I hold the job as mayor of Arjeplog, I cannot help studying how other small communities are doing and what eff ects their work has. I came home with many new impressions and a lot of new knowledge, such as what small towns in other places in the world are doing in order to look inviting.

Of course, locals also possess a lot of knowledge that we often take for granted but that we can take good

advantage of. For example, that the snow is actually insulat-ing. In conversations with people who are not familiar with conditions here, we can see that they do not have a clue about many things that we ‘know’ such as that snow that is so cold, also insulates against the cold. And that we put pipes for water and sewage deep under the ground - so they do not freeze during the winter, when the roads are cleared of snow and the frost goes deeper under the ground.

Concerning our languages: I grew up with the Swedish language but Saami was spoken all around me. I

thought I spoke ‘pure’ Swedish but now I am aware that I have a lot of words in my dialect that are Saami. I had no idea of this when I was growing up but today I am proud of it. In the same way, when I try to fi nd a word in German, the problem can often be solved by saying the Swedish word, which often turns out to be the same or similar in German.

Rut Georgsson, Simloc – this week’s local Name: Rut Georgsson (my Icelandic name is Iris Rut Ingolfs dottir).

Age: 28

Married?I live together with my sambo, David.

Home: Arjeplog since 2002. I was born and grew up in Reykjavík in Iceland.

When I moved to Arjeplog, I went to the secondary high school and have been here since then.

My mother grew up here and most of her family still live here, so it felt natural for me to come here when I left Iceland.

Occupation: Hotel co-ordinator at Simloc Hotell.

Favourite food: I like to eat fresh and healthy food. Icelandic lamb and also fi sh.

Dream car: I have never really had a dream car but perhaps a Land Rover, military green, so I can drive anywhere.

Present car: A blue Audi A3, 1,9 TDI -99.

Spare-time activities: I like to go fi shing in the summer.

What’s bad in Arjeplog?After the winter testing season, it feels like the whole town goes into a daze, almost like hibernation. It is so quiet and there is nothing happening.

I also think that Arjeplog should somehow utilize its natural resources more than it does.

Th ere is so much potential here and Arjeplog could off er much more than it does, for example to develop trade and industry.

And this is so important in order to create more job opportunities, especially during the rest of the year, when there is no car testing.

What music do you listen to?All kinds of music from classical to rock. I like to listen to piano music.

Everything except jazz, which makes me feel stressed and quite bad.

What’s important in life? To be healthy is important.

To be satisfi ed with yourself and the things you accomplish both in your work and privately.

To spend time with good friends and family in your everyday life.

To be happy with what you have and not to be greedy and want more all the time.

I also enjoy travelling but not charter or package tours. I like to go back-packing and to visit diff erent exotic places. I am planning to visit Provence and also the north of Italy, hopefully this summer.In winter, I go cross country skiing.

What’s good in Arjeplog?Th e closeness to nature is good.

It is quiet and peaceful here but I also enjoy the car testing season during the winter.

And the local people here are gener-ally very nice.

Simloc Hotell ExtendedColmis Proving Grounds arranges accommodation for their customers. Simloc (the word Colmis backwards) is the hotel complex where their customers are housed in Arjeplog.

A new extension was built during the summer and autumn, next to Simloc Hotell on Lugnet Street, and will serve the Mando car testers with both hotel rooms and a private restaurant for up to 150 people, during the winter season.

Rut Georgsson, who is responsible for accommodation at Simloc, hopes to keep the hotels open all year round.

Th e plan is to attract visitors to Arjeplog when the winter testing season is over. Th e new extension of Simloc Hotell, with extra rooms and restaurant.

Th ere are many problems concerning the wind turbines on Uljabuoda Mountain, one is ice on the wings.

Th e rotor diameter of a turbine is 90 metres, the towers are 80 m high. Each one pro-duces 3 megawatts of electricity.

Problems are for solving. Jonas Sundström is responsible for the ten wind turbines that are placed on Uljabuoda Mountain 15 kms south west of central Arjeplog and close to BOSCH facilities in Vaitoudden. He ad-mits they have many problems, some were anticipated while others are more surprising.A couple of weeks ago, eight of the ten turbines had to be closed down due to icing problems on the 45-metre-long blades or wings. Other problems include manufacturers and infrastruc-ture.

Th e whole project is a gigantic test of technology in cold climate. Never before has anybody built such a facil-ity on top of a mountain in Lapland.

Jonas Sund-ström explained that they knew they were going to have prob-lems, but they had not thought about some of them, such as the road that istoo steep for cranes and other large vehicles that are needed when repairing or servicing the

turbines. Th ese heavy vehicles can only get there when there is no snow.

At present, they are trying a new approach to solve their problems. In order to activate the de-icing system they fi rst have to check for hot spots that, theoretically, could burn holes in the wings. Th e de-icing system consist of a carbon fi bre mesh inside the wings. Th e carbon fi bre is a semi-conductor and becomes warm when electrifi ed. If the mesh is damaged it may cause hot spots.

Skellefteå Kraft, owner of the facility has recently come up with an innova-tive way of checking the de-icing as well as other parts of the turbines.

Th ey have invested in a remote-controlled helicopter that measures the temperature on the wings. It works well and is very cost eff ective compared to getting support from WinWind, the suppliers of the wind turbines.

Th ere are other systems to de-ice the wings that are said to work fl awlessly, such as circulating warm air inside the wings but Skellefteå Kraft is working hard to fi nd their own solutions.

One reason is cost, another is that WinWind is not so eager to help them during the winter. Th e road leading up the mountain is big problem for winter service and maintenance. Jonas says, “We don’t want to wait for

help and they don’t even want to try to get up when we need a crane.”

Before the facility was built on Ulja-buoda the Saami people were anxious that the wind turbines would disturb the reindeer and other wild life in the area.

However, according to Jonas the reindeer do not seem to care at all about the swishing wings and no dead birds or animals have been seen.

Jonas Sundström says that he is working very hard to minimize costs as it is important that the wind power plant is profi table. Each turbine is rated at 3 megawatts. If they work as planned they produce roughly the electricity needed in Arjeplog.
