Jenny is Living Her DreamJenny Viklund works more than most people and she loves it.She runs a farm in the wilderness and she also works full time as a teacher.

She says that farming makes her feel good, it is not a burden, it is a way of coping.

If you do not watch TV and avoid social media it is not diffi cult to fi nd the time to run a farm with 50 animals and to go fi shing and hunting whenever you like.

Jenny Wiklund is 35 years old and has an 8-year-old son, Melvin. Nine years ago she bought an old farm 30 kms from Arjeplog, called Aisjaur, which is the lake nearby, on the road to Laisvall.

Th e farm is situated one kilometre from the main road and Jenny has to keep the road clear of snow all by herself. She says that it is not a problem because she loves sitting in her tractor and listening to the radio. Sometimes she has to walk home or go by snow-mobile which is also not a problem for her.

When I arrive at the farm I hear a dog barking and a cat is making its way from the barn to the main house.

Jenny and Melvin arrive on a snow-mobile, they have been taking care of one of the many tasks on the farm.

Th ey take me to see the sheep and the goats and a recently born lamb. Th e breeding is carefully controlled as the animals are forest sheep from Värmland and are an endangered species. People come to check that Jenny is doing it correctly and so far they have not complained.

Jenny explains that the old stock do not produce as much as modern sheep, but they are well adapted for a life in the forest and even give birth in the fl ock. Mostly, they are free to roam

around wherever they want. Jenny has decided to help save these once common breeds and follows a strict procedure to keep the blood lines.

Th e goats that live together with the sheep are Jämtgetter, goats from Jämt-land. Behind the barn three enormous Linderöds pigs are very happy to greet Jenny and nearly push her over. Th e brown male is only one year old and weighs more than a grown man.

Chicken, turkeys and pearl hens prefer to be inside the barn. Th ey are also unusual species and the eggs would hardly fi t an EU mould. Th ey are all diff erent colours, shapes and sizes.

The Silver Museum Celebrates 50 YearsIn 1922, a young doctor named Einar Wallquist rode into Arjeplog with his grand piano in tow. He was to become an important person in many ways.

He was the doctor in Arjeplog and did not mind having to ski for a day or two to get to his patients. He also wrote many books about life in Arjeplog. He painted pictures and he taught the local children to listen to classical music which he also performed himself.

Perhaps his most important achieve-ment was that he collected old things from people living here. Most notably he collected Saami silver items. He received valuable jewellery from satisfi ed patients and he also bought other artefacts.

In the beginning of the 1960’s Wallquist made a deal with the kom-mun. He donated his entire collection to them and they let him use the old Saami school to make the fi rst museum in Arjeplog.

Th e Museum with the impressive Saami silver collection soon became renowned across the globe.

Th e doctor himself had charisma like no-one else and he fascinated visitors, which helped make his museum well-known.

An important date in the history of Arjeplog and of the Silver Museum

was 1975 when the King of Sweden opened the Silver Road between Sweden and Norway. Th e number of visitors rose steeply after that.

Dr Wallquist died at the age of 89 just before his 90th birthday, which was planned to be a large celebration for the short, big man. Th e locals felt that he did it just to spite everyone.

He was known to always go his own way. It was considered almost impossible to replace the doctor as the head of the Silver Museum. Who could possibly do what the doctor had done?

In 1987 archeologist Ingela Bergman from Piteå was appointed the new boss of the Mu-seum. She says she was very nervous about how she would be received by the locals, but she need not have worried.

She remembers that

everyone was so helpful and she felt such strong support for both her and her son, Manne. Th ey knew then that Arjeplog would be their new home.

It soon became apparent that Ingela was the right woman for the job. Th e Museum gradually grew. In the beginning they needed more space for all the things and for the staff and later they expanded the exhibitions.

Finally, the Institute for Subarctic Landscape Research (INSARC) was opened in 2008 and has become an important hub for researchers from all over the world.

Ingela Bergman and the Silver Museum are responsible, among many other things, for fi nding the oldest hu-man dwelling in the north of Sweden. It is 20 km east of Arjeplog and called Dumpokjauratj and there is evidence that people lived there 10,000 years ago.

Th e staff at the Silver Museum are preparing exhibitions and a new website to celebrate that Arjeplog’s pride and joy turns fi fty.

Dream car: My dream car has not yet been built but it is being designed in USA. It is an all-wheel drive Tesla model 3 and will probably come out in 2018. And I would like a red one.I love the idea of electric cars.

Present car: I have a red Tesla Roadster. It is wonderful - quiet, cheap to drive and clean!

Spare time activities: I play squash and we go hiking in the national parks. I work many hours a day but on weekends and holidays, I like to go hiking.

In Arjeplog, I like slalom skiing at Galtis, snow-mobiling and also driving on the lake just for fun (on our day off ).

What is good in Arjeplog?It is a real town with real people, not like Ivalo in Finland or in USA (where

we have also been testing) where there is only the proving grounds.

Here we live in this regular town (Arjeplog) and the locals are living their lives side by side with the car testers. I like that very much.

You can get whatever you need in the shops here and I like the real winter with snow. Lunches give good value for your money.

What is bad in Arjeplog?Nothing, really. You cannot expect big city things in a small town.

I think it is good the way it is here, except that the food in the supermarkets is more expensive than in Germany.

What music you enjoy?Techno music and also classical music. I enjoy a lot of diff erent kinds of music.

What is important in life?It is important to understand other people and to respect them and their views.

Problems arise when people think that only they are right, but we all have diff erent childhoods and we see the world diff erently. Th ere would be peace if we could understand, accept and respect each other.

Co-operation Against Crime‘Grannsamverkan’ is the Swedish word for co-operation between neighbours. After a couple of recent burglaries and unverifi ed scares in Arjeplog there is now a group of locals who are keeping an extra eye on what is happening in town.

Th e members of the group have no rights to do more than contact the police and alert each other if they see something strange going on.

Th e police urge everyone to always report anything that seems out of the ordinary. Th ey also say that it is better that they receive a few unnecessary reports than that they miss a real threat.

Th ey also say that it is positive for the statistics to have many reports because then it is harder for the authorities to save on the number of police in the area.

Phone 112 if there is an emergency or any ongoing crime. You can also phone +46 77 114 14 00 from a foreign phone to report something, anything. You can be anonymous.

This & ThatWhen is Spring?Th e weather woman on TV told us the other day that spring is here. Th at is perhaps true in the far south of the country, but we probably have nearly three months until real spring is here.

Th e meteorological defi nition of spring is when it has been plus degrees for seven days in a row.

In Sweden the diff erence is more than three months between the south and the north.

Here in Lapland, we are now looking forward to the fi fth season called spring-winter, a time of sunshine, ice fi shing, snow-mobiling and skiing. Many locals think that this is the best time of the year.

Ice fi shing in glorious weather in the mountains is the highlight of the year for many people.

Sofi a Flinkfeldt, the Silver Museum – this week’s local

Name: Sofi a Flinkfeldt.

Home: Arjeplog. I was born here and grew up here.

Company: Th e Silver Museum.

Occupation: I am a museum pedagog and this is my third year at the museum. I am a teacher and used to teach at the primary school here but I love my job at the museum. My work involves public activities for adults and children. For example the school children visit us and learn about the history of the Saami and the fi rst settlers.

I also do guided tours of the mu-seum, among other things.

Favourite food: Asian food such as sushi.

Present car: I have a silver Volvo S-40 from 2007. It is reliable and gets me where I want to go.

Spare-time activities: In the summer I like to go fi shing. In winter I enjoy skiing cross country and also ice fi shing.

I go to the gym and like walking in Nature. When the weather is bad, I like to watch fi lms and series on TV.

I loved the series called Th e House of Cards and am looking forward to the continuation.

What’s good in Arjeplog/?My friends and family are closeby. Nothing is a problem here, life is simple.

What’s bad in Arjeplog?Nothing really. Sometimes I can feel that a rock pub or a place that plays alternative music would be nice.

What music do you listen to?All music except perhaps ballads. I specially like Reggae and hip-hop music.

What’s important in life? To spend time with people that you like and who make you feel good.

It is important to do exercise such as walking or going to the gym.

It is also important to have a job that you enjoy because you spend so much time at work.

Inside the cosy and very special house there is not much that looks like other houses in Arjeplog. In the entrance hall some shotgun shells lie on the window sill. Next to the window there is a hatch that Jenny can open to shoot the fox that is a constant threat to the birds on the farm. One of the shells is empty and a fresh fox skin is hanging on a wall.

In the kitchen/ dining room old things and new things crowd every available space. Above the old wood stove fi sh skins are hanging to dry.

Once again the question arises as to how she fi nds time for everything. Not only does she work full time as a teacher, she also runs the farm. She alone has to fi x all the things around the house and farm and on top of all that, she fi nds time to go fi shing and hunting, which she loves.

She says that she is not very social and at school she gets all the social contact she needs. If she does not leave ‘town’ (Arjeplog) straight after school, she feels stressed. Most car testers call Arjeplog a village, Jenny calls it a town.

Jenny Viklund does not make money on her farm. She is not allowed to sell meat from the endangered animals. She can sell eggs, fur, wool and live stock and she reckons that it usually breaks even.

Th ere is a TV somewhere in the house, but Jenny cannot remember the last time she watched anything on TV. Social media are out of the question and she admits that she does not visit people very often.

When I ask if she enjoys partying she disappears up the stairs and two minutes later she appears in her regional dress. She explains that this dress is what she wears for weddings and the end-of-school parties. Th at is about all the partying she says she has time for.

It is still hard to understand how she manages. To run a farm is easily full time work and so is teaching.

Teaching is perfect for her, as she has free afternoons, nights, weekends and the whole summer.

She does not get stressed when there are millions of things to do, but she has had problems fi nding a boy-friend that can handle this life style.

However, now she has found someone who is similar to her. He lives in Laisvallby and spends most of his life in the forest and on the lakes.

His name is Michael Johansson. He says that they are sambo (living together as a couple) because whenever they have a chance they are in the same house, either his or hers.

Jenny, on the other hand, thinks that they are more like särbo which is the Swedish word for a couple who are together but live separately each in his/her own home.

Jenny Viklund is living her dream and doing all the things she loves.
