Christian Bock from Austria wanted to go on a cycling trip. To make it more interesting, he chose to cycle in Lapland in February.

“It is more interesting”, he answered when asked the obvious question:Why does anyone decide to go cycling and camping around Lapland in February?

When we met Christian Bock from Austria, he had just left the town of Arjeplog and was on his way to Norway.

Th e temperature outdoors was minus 30 degrees centigrade. Th e cyclist and his bicycle were clearly struggling in high gear and at a low speed. Anyone who has experienced this extreme cold weather,

knows that mechanical things become very stiff at these low temeperatures.

Christian admitted that it was a bit nippy for cycling, but he said he was not complaining. He fl ew to Arvidsjaur and his plan was to pedal around in Lapland and northern Norway for one month.

When he left Arjeplog, he went on his way to Mo i Rana in Norway and after that he had planned to return to Arvidsjaur via the Blue Road. All in all, he thought that the distance he would cover would be between 600 to 700 km.

To make the trip even more interesting Christian Bock decided to spend his nights in the tent that he had in the little trailer he pulled behind his bicycle.

Bock was very well-equipped, but he did say that it felt very hard to keep his feet warm while cycling.

We wish him good luck and hope to hear from him when he gets back home.

This & That• In last week’s issue of Th e Arjeplog Times, we wrote that some car testers seem to disregard the traffi c rules here and that the police are going to be stricter in enforcing these rules.

To illustrate this, we had a photo of a Fiat car that was parked right on a crossing and facing the wrong direc-tion.

We would like to point out that this kind of disregard for the rules and ‘bad behaviour’ in traffi c is fairly usual, according to the cops here, among car testers from ALL the diff erent car testing companies and not only the Fiat car testers.

Well-known Swedish actors and directors will be taking part in Arjeplogs Film Festival this weekend from Friday to Sunday. Some of the fi lm people coming to Arjeplog this weekend also won Swe-den’s leading fi lm awards, Guldbagge Awards. Gabriela Pichler won awards for best director and best manuscript of the fi lm Äta, Sova, Dö which also won the award for best fi lm. Johannes Brost won the award for best male actor in the fi lm Avalon.

Th e festival is called “Faith, Film and Love” and is very popular. Th e open-ing, which includes fi reworks, will take place on the market square at 17.15 on Friday evening and the fi lms will be shown at Hotell Lyktan, the cinema and the Silver Museum.

Th e idea of the festival is to allow the audience to discuss the fi lms, taking up important questions in life that arise from seeing the fi lms, together with the directors and actors and others involved with these the fi lms.

Other guests include the bishop from the Church of Sweden and other theologians. Th e visiting celebrities also get to try a few activities such as driving a car on ice, snow-mobiling, hot tub outdoors and experiencing the silence.

Th e festival is run by the Swedish church in Arjeplog and Niclas West-ling, the local priest, is the organizer.

Film Festival this Weekend

• Th e whisky distillery, Lappland Destilleri, that was being planned in Arvidsjaur is now on hold as they lack about one million kronor in funds, according to Gerry Axtelius from Statoil, one of the founders of the distillery idea. However, this Friday evening there is a whisky tasting evening at Hotell Laponia in Arvidsjaur.

Iglootel - Igloo Hotel made of SnowTh e Flycar Group’s new venture is the 750 m2 igloo hotel made of snow that is situated in Abborträsk, 20 km from Arvidsjaur.

Th e igloo is very impressive with its wooden doors and fl oors and interest-ing ice designs and lighting.

Th e iglootel has 10 bedrooms, each sleeps 1-6 people in warm sleeping bags on reindeer hides and matresses.

Th ere is also an event area, dining room and bar, sauna and hot tubs, all of which can be rented for events, presentations and the like.

Th e Iglootel was made by blowing up large balloons and covering them with snow, made in snow canons. After 10 hours, the air was let out of the bal-loons leaving the igloos made of snow.

Th en came the designing of the snow and ice which was done by students from the Academy for Handicraft

Design Rosenberg from Aachen in Germany. Th is is the fi rst time they have worked with snow and ice and the results are beautiful, especially when highlighted by the lighting system.

Th ere are guided tours in English and German on Mon, Wed, Th urs & Fri, at 11,12 and 13. And on Sat & Sun every hour from 10 to 15. 125 kr.

What is good in Arjeplog?Th e Nature, the landscape and the snow. I also saw the Northern Lights, which I like very much.

What is bad in Arjeplog?It does not feel good that I cannot communicate with locals and others here, it is diffi cult with diff erent languages.

What music you enjoy?Korean pop music.

What is important in life?To do your best in life and to take care of your family. It is important to live your life in a way that you will not regret.

Submission wrestlers and boxers train together in an old school in Arjeplog and all those interested are welcome.

About 20-25 people aged 15-50 practice boxing and the Brazilian form of Jiu-Jitsu known as BJJ.

A couple of weeks ago world famous Swedish boxer Paolo Roberto was

He was surprised to see the boxers training side by side with the martial arts people.

He was also impressed with the talent he saw in Arjeplog and was told that Arjeplog has a very old boxing tradition.

Our business developer, Mikael Reinholdsson from Argentis and I have met a number of local companies

during the autumn and winter. We still have many to visit but I would nevertheless like to describe the spirit that we felt. In the municipal organization, we are currently spending a lot of time and eff ort to align our costs and “try to eat the food that we have” as an old Swedish saying states. Th erefore it feels soothing to listen to the various local companies talking about their future plans.

Running a business is like training for a marathon race. You must have a very clear picture of what you need in

order to succeed. You cannot only trust luck and the eff orts of others. You have to make plans and visualize what you want to achieve. You should try to imagine the eff ort needed and prepare for it. And the day that you stand there, at the start, you might also have to be a little lucky. Th e weather has to be fairly good and hopefully you have not caught a cold. But success will be yours, when you have made the preparations.

Many of our local businesses are made of tough building blocks. Th ey have lived and survived for a long time.

Th ey know they have to deliver good service and good products if they are to survive. Th ey have to care about what the customer wants and what they are willing to pay for. And they must prepare for the future.

Several companies are new and they are fi lled with energy and ideas. Th ey are eager to realize their plans. Now,

during our high season, when the car testers are here, many of our companies and their employees work many hours a day. Because you need service. Because you are here right now. Because we want to show that you are important and we want you to stay.

We work, we practise, we make future plans. You are in our plans. And we hope that we will stand beside

each other in the future as well.

Occupation: Receptionist at Hotell Lyktan. I also clean sometimes and fi x breakfast and I am the sound technician when that service is needed.

I am thinking of studying to be an optician, perhaps in the autumn.

Favourite food: I like all food, especially grilled meat, as well as reindeer and moose meat.

And I like palt, which is potato and fl our dumplings.

Dream car: I do not have a dream car, I am not interested in what kind of car I drive. I would rather buy a home.

Present car: I do not have a car, I borrow one if I ever need to go some-where far.

What’s good in Arjeplog?Th e closeness to Nature , there is so much you can do outdoors.My friends and family live here.

What’s bad in Arjeplog?Sometimes I get irritated that there is such a small variety of things to buy here. Also, a limited number of things to do.

On the bright side, this makes me appreciate the large selection of things that are available to do and buy when I go to a big city

What music do you listen to?I listen mostly to the radio: pop to rock music.

What’s important in life? My Christian faith is important to me, also my family and friends.

It is important to have fun and to be happy with your life.

Seeing beyond your own self and helping others gives you another pers-pective of life and is very important for me. For example, I volunteered to work at an orphanage in Margate in South Africa for 6 months. Th is was a wonderful experience.

Spare-time activities: Cross country skiing, snow-mobiling, ice fi shing in winter and boating and fi shing in the summer. I like to do things outdoors in Nature.

I also like to do things like scrap-booking and interior designing and baking.

Galtis Ski Slope will be open every day 10-16, starting this week and until March 10. Th ey will also be open on Wednesday evenings.

Th e reason for the extended opening hours is that it is sportlov or winter sports holidays. Th is school holiday is usually for one week in February or March and the various regions in

Norway and Sweden have this week’s holiday at diff erent times. Galtis is therefore open during the whole period covering all the weeks.

Sportlov - winter school holidaySportlov or winter holiday in Sweden has its origin in the so-called kokslov which was introduced in 1940 in order

to save on the heating of schools. Th e idea to introduce a school

Galtis Open during Sportlov, winter school holidayholiday was apparently fi rst realized in the 1940’s when the need to reduce fuel consumption led to schools, especially in the big cities, closing for one week.

It was called kokslov and not winter holidays, according to Dick Harrison, professor of historia at Lund’s Univer-sitet. Koks = coke (derived from coal) was the fuel used at that time to heat schools.

Th e winter holiday week became a standard feature in the 50’s when they gave children a week off from school in order to reduce the risk of spreading disease.

In the 60’s the term sportlov (sports holiday) was introduced, the idea being that children should do outdoor sports to stay healthy.

Gunilla Balkow who works at Arjeplog Test Management (ATM) was able to take leave from work for 18 months after her son Jack was born. Now he is two years old and spends the day at preschool while Gunilla and her husband are at work.

Nine-year-old Josefi na goes to regular school, and after school she goes to Fritids, a day care for school children.

Gunilla says it is a very good service and it works really well but she admits that it was hard to start working again after 18 months of a completely diff erent life.

However, thanks to Elina Unhola, who worked instead of her at ATM, things went well.

From the age of about one and until they start school, children in Arjeplog (and the rest of Sweden) can go to the preschool or förskolan.

Everything except clothes and dia-pers are provided, says local preschool teacher, Yvonne Frykberg.

Th e amount of time each child spends at preschool is based on the needs of the parents.

Th e preschool in Arjeplog is open from 6.30 to 18.30 and can take about 120 children. Most of the staff have teacher’s training and they strive to teach the children basic skills.

Th e day we visited the preschool they were learning how to cook on an open fi re. A lot of things about the Nature around us are studied.

Yvonne points out that the children are not forced to learn anything and they do not compare one child with another. Th ere are also no grades.

Th e maximum cost to have your children at preschool is 1260 kronor per month for one child, the second child costs a maximum of 840 kr, and the third 420 kr. If you have more children, they go for free. If you have a low income you pay less for preschool.

Even if the parents are unemployed, they have a right to send their children to preschool, but only for 15 hours per week.

Preschool Available for All Children

Th e municipal preschool is near the sports hall and community centre. Th ere is also a family co-operative preschool on Öberget. School children aged 7-10 are also entitled to go to after-school day care, if they want.

Child care in Sweden is considered among the best in the world.

When a child is born in Sweden the parents, one at a time, are entitled to

a total of 420 days paid leave (about 80% of your salary before your child was born).

Both parents are also allowed to take off work for the fi rst one and a half years after the child is born.

From the age of one year, children can go to day-care or preschool. Children and parents are well-looked after in Sweden.
