Korea and Japan Welcome the First Methanol-Fueled, Ocean-Going Vessels
Starting on April 18, Waterfront Shipping Company Ltd. (WFS), Marinvest/Skagerack Invest (Marinvest), Westfal-Larsen Management (WL), and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) attended a series of traditional ship-namingceremonies and took delivery of the first Korean- and Japanese-built, methanol-fueled ocean tankers –the ‘Lindanger’, ‘Mari Jone’ and ‘Taranaki Sun’.
All 7 Methanol-fuelled vesselsentered service in 2016

The ME-GI is derived from the industry’s standard MC and ME engine. Diesel cycle high fuel efficiency ~50% versus much lower for other engine types. High fuel flexibility High reliability – same as fuel engines. No derating because of knocking danger. Negligible fuel slip. A robust gas combustion – unchanged load response – unaffected by ambient condition
ME-GI and ME-LGI Gas Technologies ME-LGI: Performance Results: EGR - SFOC and NOx
Presenter
Presentation Notes
SFOC is given relative to the methanol (LGI) reference. NOX is in absolute numbers. NOx is given as ISO corrected and corrected to REF Pmax in EPOS. The NOx for LGI+EGR is well below the Tier-III limit. EGR seems to give a slightly stronger NOx reduction for LGI relative to DI. The reduction is 60 vs 50% on a ppm basis in this case (with the same settings). EGR gives a SFOC penalty of 2 g/kWh for LGI but 4g/kWh for Diesel. This is with same settings, not same Emissions levels. Diesel require much more EGR to reach Tier-III since LGI has a lower NOx emission to start with.
ME-GI and ME-LGI Gas Technologies ME-LGI: Performance Results: Water in Methanol - Emissions
NOx decreases almost linearly withwater content
NOx emissions are close to 2 g/kWhat 50 and 75% load
NOx emissions at 25% load is at the“not to exceed limit” for Tier-III, butcan be lowered further
100% load with high water content notpossible due to system limitations
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Emission Plots as a function of water percentage. NOx decrease almost linearly with water content. The NOx emissions are close to 2 g/kWh at 50 and 75% load which is well below the Tier-III limit NOx emissions at 25% load is at the “not to exceed limit” for Tier-III, but can be lowered further with more water CO emissions do not increase with water fraction as was feared when the flame got colder. HC emissions are unclear but might increase slightly with water content. No soot was observed at any time.
