Thanksgiving 2009
History: Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation
• Four Duties of All Nations before the LORD• Seven Blessings • Six Requests
To Acknowledge the Providence of Almighty God
To Obey His Will
To Be Grateful for His Benefits
To Humbly Implore His Protection and Favor
for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to
their becoming a nation;
for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and
conclusion of the late war;
for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have
since enjoyed;
for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been
enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and
happiness,
and particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and religious liberty with which we are
blessed,
and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;
and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been
pleased to confer upon us.
beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;
to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our
several and relative duties properly and punctually;
to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by
constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed
and obeyed;
to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless
them with good governments, peace, and concord;
to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among
them and us;
and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be
best.
Ps 105• Psalm 105:1-8
1Oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples. 2Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; Speak of all His wonders. 3Glory in His holy name; Let the heart of those who seek the Lord be glad. 4Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face continually. 5Remember His wonders which He has done, His marvels and the judgments uttered by His mouth, 6O seed of Abraham, His servant, O sons of Jacob, His chosen ones! 7He is the Lord our God; His judgments are in all the earth. 8He has remembered His covenant forever, The word which He commanded to a thousand generations,

Thanksgiving and History
1. The Biblical pattern of “thanksgiving” is a present relationship of faith and love for God based on what He has done in the past.
2. Thanksgiving in the Bible is the praise you offer to God for His works on your behalf.
3. Every believer has infinite cause for a life characterized by praise to God in gratitude for His saving Work at Calvary.
4. The focus is always the God who has done the works.5. The works always reveal the PERSON and CHARACTER of the
worker. 6. History is set before man for him to recognize God’s great works
of deliverance in love and righteousness so that man may worship.7. All pursuits in life, including the study of history or nature
(science) are designed by God to worship Him because they show us Who He is.
