Let us fearlessly stand at the foot of His cross on Good Friday, so that we may witness His Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Blessings Prevail at the MotherhouseThe SSJ

Motherhouse underwent some major reconstruction this winter. On January 17, during dinner, a sprinkler system malfunctioned, sending copious amounts of water into the hallways of the west side of the building. No one was injured. Our quick-thinking Motherhouse staff safely moved residents from the flooded areas to comfortable and dry rooms.

The damage was extensive and clean up was messy in those first few days after the flood. Staff and Sisters worked tirelessly and diligently to attend to residents’ needs, while accommodating and welcoming the clean-up crews who came so quickly to our aid. Insurance is covering costs for the necessary hallway repairs.

As we move forward, we are mindful of our blessings and the strength of our community. We thank God for his presence among us that encouraged a spirit of kindness, teamwork, and gratitude. We hold a deep appreciation for the wonderful people who surround us and are grateful for all the well wishes and support!

Faithful to the WordMonsignor William H Shannon’s

third book of homilies is now available at the Motherhouse gift shop. “Faithful to the Word: The Sunday and Feast Day Homilies of William H. Shannon, Liturgical Cycle C,” completes the three-year liturgical cycle.

Monsignor Shannon, who was the founding chairman of the Department of Religious Studies at Nazareth College and longtime Chaplain of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, died in 2012. Monsignor wrote and lectured prolifically on many aspects of religious studies including Scripture, contemplative prayer, and the writings of Thomas Merton. The collection of his homilies in this latest book relates to the Sunday readings according to the Gospel of Luke.

News & NotesSSJ Employee Tutoring Program

Lilliana Umulisa (see cover photo), a Motherhouse employee, is proud of her new citizenship status. Lilliana takes part in a tutoring program for employees when she’s at work. Sister Mary Lisa Dwyer started the program several years ago for employees who need help with English. Sister Mary Lisa, along with Sisters Mary Cumbo and Nancy Clark, run the weekly sessions, helping with citizenship preparation, speaking, reading, and writing.

St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center Welcomes New Director

St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center welcomes Jennifer Sahrle as its new Executive Director. Jennifer has worked in healthcare for 16 years and was previously at Trillium Health. Jennifer takes over for Sister Christine Wagner, who retired from the directorship position in 2021. Sister Chris will stay connected with the Center to help with development efforts. St Joseph’s Neighborhood Center provides comprehensive physical and mental health services to the uninsured and underinsured in our community.

Celebrating a Silver JubileeCongratulations to Sister Maria José Monteiro de

Oliveira who is celebrating 25 years as a Sister of Saint Joseph. Sister Maria José ministers as a lawyer and pastoral agent in Brazil. The Brazilian community celebrated her jubilee this past January in a moving celebration at her parish. “We were getting a little teary eyed,” said Sister Jean Bellini, “as we witnessed the love and tenderness by each one who shared their words and gestures with her.”

Witnessing Love in Action . . . for Miles and MilesBy: Sister Monica Weis, SSJ

Approximately 60 miles from Montgomery to Selma, Alabama…approximately 60 miles from Selma to Pine Apple, Alabama…60 miles to Vredenburgh, Alabama…60 miles to Mosses, Alabama—the Sisters of Saint Joseph who minister to the people of rural Alabama spend hours traveling to and from these small towns to help those in need. This past Fall, I was privileged to assist in this service and get a glimpse of the daily work of Sisters Patricia Flass and Kathy Navarra of our SSJ Alabama Mission thanks to a grant through the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.

“The Rural Poverty Programs in America” is an opportunity for Catholic sisters and lay associates to experience ministry in the South with a goal of addressing rural poverty. The program focuses on providing residents with food and nutrition assistance, after-school learning, elder services, clothing and health care. It began in 2019 and is directed by Sister Pat through the Edmundite Missions.

I, having responded to the grant, spent two weeks with Sisters Pat and Kathy at our convent in Selma in November 2021. Each day following morning prayer and Mass, we’d hit the country roads to begin our mission work, driving between the loblolly pines and mixed hardwoods with the occasional field of cotton. While I cannot recount all my experiences, I can offer a few highlights from each location where I had the chance to witness love in action.

Pine Apple: A quaint but minuscule town in the Black Belt of Alabama, the work of our Sisters, both past and present, continues to serve the needs of the community today. Some years ago, Sister Mary Maloy, who ministered in our Alabama Mission from 1982 to 2000, started a thrift shop through the group she founded, “Partners in Progress, Inc.” Now, ably coordinated by Doris Smith, who worked with Sister Mary, the boutique is named in Sister’s honor: “Mary’s Food and Fashion.” Clothing and home basics are available to the local population for just $2 or less. In addition, thanks to Sister Kathy’s grant writing prowess, a small laundromat with two washers and two dryers has been built at the end of the trailer so that people living in the area can use the machines for a nominal fee. Not far away is a tiny library and an equally tiny Town Hall. Despite two nearby gas stations having closed, there is a clinic, learning, and nutrition center near the boutique that offers a hot noon meal to locals for just $1.25. Sister Pat often stops at the center for lunch as a way to continue the longtime SSJ presence in Pine Apple. I happily joined her one day and got to enjoy a delicious meal of sausage/biscuit/gravy, potatoes, applesauce, and hostess Dorothy Chrishon’s famous iced tea. Aside from the great food and company, I was enamored by Dorothy’s t-shirt that proclaimed: “I am my ancestors’ WILDEST DREAM.” She surely is!

Vredenburgh: Originally supported by the Edmundite Missions but now staffed primarily by volunteers and SSJ funding, the settlement consists of a Community Center. The Center, which includes computer rooms, Red Cross emergency supplies and other amenities, is shared by adults in the morning and students in the afternoon. Again, thanks to Sister Kathy’s grant writing, the building’s double reinforced walls and ceilings makes it the only tornado shelter in the area. Sister Kathy has also been able to build a playground for the children behind the Center and, courtesy of a Rochester benefactor, is planning to add a Nature Trail in the future. Bordering this site is “Wise Buys,” a trailer of clothing, household items, and toys, supported by our SSJ “Charity Fund,” that is open on Saturday mornings. To add more helping hands to Julia Spencer and Annie Lewis, the two paid staff workers, Sister Pat and I drove to Vredenburgh one Friday afternoon and stayed overnight in our 30-year-old SSJ double-wide trailer that was once home to Sisters Shirley Cassler and Marie Albert Alderman, and more recently to Sisters Pat and Kathy. My job was to reorganize shelves of sweaters and t-shirts according to size and talk with the customers who arrived promptly at 8:30 AM, hoping to secure items for their children.

Mosses: Currently underwritten by the Edmundite Missions, a local food pantry has recently been organized as a “grocery store” by Mr. Q (Quadarius Belser) and Stephanie McCall. Residents’ names are registered and callers are given a laminated card indicating how many “points” they can use for fresh fruits and vegetables, canned goods, meats, household products—all free of charge. Mr. Q also has recipes and nutrition booklets available for the taking, as well as a crockpot with a sample of healthy food. Sister Pat and I spent one morning volunteering at the “store,” helping shoppers select fresh foods, bagging and carrying their groceries, and reminding them of various specials. The specialty that morning was green bean casserole. A fun moment of the day was watching customers “spin” for a free turkey—a once-an-hour giveaway. One winner we saw was so delighted that she now had all the makings of her Thanksgiving dinner, beginning with sweet potatoes for her pies. In addition to the grocery section, the building includes colorful classrooms that function as learning centers for the youngsters, staffed by a series of volunteers.

In MemoriamSister Beatrice GanleyOctober 27, 2021Sister Beatrice Ganley was a writer and an educator. She taught at Nazareth College; St. Bridget, Rochester; St. Patrick, Seneca Falls; Nazareth Hall Cadet School; St. Agnes, Avon; St. Theodore, Rochester; St. Monica, Rochester; St. Augustine, Rochester; St. John the Evangelist, Greece; and Nazareth Academy.

Sister Erica Joan McDowellDecember 11, 2021Sister Erica Joan McDowell spent 32 years in the classroom at Rochester’s Nazareth Academy and seven at De Sales High School in Geneva. In “retirement,” she directed the Congregational communications department for 10 years and served as photographer and publicity manager for Genesee Valley Orchestra and Chorus and later studied and created colored pencil paintings.

Sister Diane DennieDecember 14, 2021Sister Diane Dennie (formerly Sister Eileen) spent 34 years serving in Catholic education, including 21 years as principal at St. Lawrence School. She also ministered in pastoral work at St. John of Rochester, St. Bridget/St. Joseph in Bloomfield, and St. Michael, Lyons/St. John, Clyde/St. Patrick, Savannah.

Selma: One of the most historic sites in all of Alabama, I was across the Edmund Pettis Bridge at least a dozen times, mostly because it is the main access to downtown Selma from the outlying districts. Sister Pat made sure that I saw the majority of the Edmundite ministries centered in Selma, a city of just over 17,000. The Edmundites have constructed a new gym, workout room, and computer and learning center in the new Bullock Center—something sorely needed since three YMCAs closed and left derelict buildings. In the Center of Hope—with rooms for a clinic, social work interviews, and food preparation services—I spent several mornings making sandwiches (420 one morning!) as well as stacking containers of full meals for the homebound. Pre-pandemic, the Center welcomed guests into an attractively decorated room for lunch and dinner. Now, people pick up their food in a “to-go bag” at a window. After school, the Edmundite bus drops off children at the Center for a healthy meal before they work with teachers in the learning center. Meanwhile, Sister Kathy is across the street at “The Academy” overseeing college ACT-prep classes via Zoom, planning lessons with the director, and hatching plans to take the older students on various field trips to see colleges, explore the workings of auto repair shops, or engage in karate competitions. Yes, karate! Two evenings a week, Sister Kathy, a fourth-degree black belt herself, conducts karate classes in a room next to the convent, instilling the youngsters with the discipline and skills that will help them in later years.

These highlights from my two-week experience are just a snippet of how our Sisters have continued to exemplify love in action. They are committed to the people of Alabama—not just helping them survive with better food and clothing, but acknowledging their innate dignity, and listening to stories of their joys and frustrations. It is love

that motivates their interpersonal, networking, and grant-writing skills to secure civic improvements such as sewers in Vredenburgh. It is love that motivates their hours of volunteering at the clinic or clothing boutique, and it is love that gives meaningful witness to our SSJ charism of serving the dear neighbor without distinction. I am grateful to the Hilton Foundation for providing this opportunity to spend time with Sisters Pat and Kathy in Alabama and to experience their Christian witness—in so many ways…spanning so many miles.

Sharing in Our Faith JourneyThe Sisters of Saint Joseph officially welcomed

five new Associates during a private Commitment Ceremony in November 2021. SSJ Associates are men and women who wish to share the spirit and spirituality of the Congregation, serving God in the love and service of the dear neighbor, while maintaining their own lifestyles. Like vowed members, the Associate candidates devote a period of time to mutual discernment

before formalizing their relationships with the Congregation. Bound by a personalized, written commitment, each Associate joins the Sisters in participating in a variety of spiritual, ministerial, and social events. We are grateful to our newest Associates who have chosen to continue their faith journey with us and have shared below what drew them to this commitment.

What does being an SSJ Associate mean to you?Patricia Curry of Brighton, NY“This experience of becoming an Associate has changed me as a person, both mentally and physically. I have embraced spiritual magic through this journey. I have also gained additional grace through what I have received from the Sisters. I feel I have a new family and I know I am not out there alone – I have additional lifelines to help me in my daily journey, to help with my prayer life, and I have an added sense of peace and calmness.”

As an Associate, I feel that I have found kindred spirits who (among many other things, of course) try to be good stewards of our common home. I am glad to be a supporter and friend, sharing the faith and charism of the Sisters.”Jennifer van Edig of East Rochester, NY“’Be still and know that I am God” – Psalm 46:10.’ As a teenager I was given a handmade birch bark plaque of this verse when I worked at a summer camp in the Adirondack mountains. At the time, the verse meant ‘don’t worry and trust in God.’ However, as an Associate, the meaning has changed, and the emphasis is on the ‘Be.’ I am part of a bigger family now, and Being includes listening to someone who may just want to talk, doing a task that is simple for me but difficult for someone else, or attending a service or event honoring others. Being does not have to be a big, grand gesture.”

Committed to protecting the earth, the Sisters of Saint Joseph have joined with Religious Congregations throughout the world to support Laudato Si’. Laudato Si’ is Pope Francis’ seven-year action plan to create economic sustainability.

The SSJ Justice and Care for Creation office is leading SSJ efforts to be sustainable. Look for highlights on SSJ social media during Catholic Sisters Week, March 8-14. Some eco-friendly initiatives are already underway at the Motherhouse and in local communities, for example, meatless Mondays and a composting partnership with a local business.
