Thought for the Week

“Use your head, but follow your heart.”

Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, UK

Weekly Sports Wrap

Rugby Last Saturday we faced some formidable sides from Durbanville Primary School. All the matches were big challenges for our boys. DPS boast a strong rugby culture and have many athletic boys from who to select. I was very impressed to see a school from the northern suburbs play such an expansive match. This challenged boys both in physical defence as well as defending out wide. I was very impressed with the WPPS boys’ efforts on the day, even though we were clearly outmatched.

This week we played mid-week matches against Bishops as it is a long weekend. This is certainly one fixture that everyone in the WPPS community looks forward to. The matches are always closely watched, and are exciting as both schools play with the same kind of flare and expansive pattern.

Hockey This past week saw our boys taking on Reddam. Their hockey has progressed well over the years and we now enjoy many competitive games. It was pleasing to see how well our boys performed, with victories to WPPS in many of the games. The 1st XI performed well, winning 1-0 while the U12A team had a tough game which ended in a draw. Our junior teams continue to perform well. The U11 and U10 recorded fantastic victories on the day. Our U9 boys enjoyed games against Reddam and Fish Hoek. Unfortunately the games against Fish Hoek were not an even match, but it was good for our boys to tough it out against strong opposition.

The U11A and B teams played in a festival at SACS on Friday. This is the first of a number of Friday festivals and we look forward to seeing many of our boys performing at SACS, Bishops and St George’s in the coming weeks.

Squash On Friday, 2 August, three squash teams were involved in league matches. The 2

nd Team boys all won their matches 3 - 0 and secured an

impressive win again Springfield. The 3

rd Team drew the match against Villagers Invitation 6 - 6.

The 4th

Team also played a very good game and won the match against Springfield 9 - 4. All round a good set of results and a great performance from all the boys. Unfortunately, due to some poor communication from our 1

st Team opponents, matches had to be called off at the last

minute. There will be no squash matches this week owing to the long weekend.

Cross Country All races for the season have been completed. We are waiting on the announcement of the Zonal team. Practice still takes place on Mondays at 17.00 in the Newlands Forest.

ONE-TO-ONE Thank you for all the wonderful contributions to ONE-TO-ONE that is just over a week to go until the big day. It is not too late to contribute if you haven't already done so. We will finish the packing on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. If you have an hour or so to spare, from 07.30, pop along to the Eden Rd Hall. Thank you, also, to the mums who have given their time to help with this.
