Working Together, Growing Together

Week 5 Flying Start Week 5 at Flying Start was packed with lots of fun and unchained creativity (and it got messy).Taking advantage of the sunshine once again, we headed outside and turned the playground of Crookwell Public School into our own giant canvas. Using the brightest chalk and working in teams the Flying Starters were inspired to create many life size self-portraits. After reading I’m Not Scared by Dan Crisp and Lee Wildish, the Flying Starters got to work on concocting their own cups of slime that are runny when stirred slowly, but almost solid when stirred with speed!

The Flying Starters work in teams to draw body outlines.

Lincoln Kearney carefully traces around Kade Fowler.

William McDonald tries to hold still for Jonah Allwright.

Lilly Hattam, Louise Robertson and Ameila O’Brien pose

next to their life size portrait.

Ada Dunn takes some time to relax as she is carefully traced

onto the playground.

The Flying Starters dressed for the messy process of making

their own slime! WANTED! Past CPS Students of the Year Each year at Presentation Evening an award named Student of the Year is presented to a Year 6 student. Can you help us to fill the gaps in our Student of the Year Register? We would like to have this information available in our school’s 150th Anniversary Booklet. We need the students of the year from 1990 -1997, 2003 – 2006 and 2010 to 2012. Please contact the office on 48321213 if you can help fill any of these gaps.

LIBRARY NEWS Lunch time activities. This term, due to the often inclement weather, the library has been open every lunch time, Monday to Friday, for those students who wish to participate in some fun inside activities. There are lots of games, drawing and organised craft activities available for the students to try. Children have been catching up on their reading, browsing and borrowing during this time as well. So, when it’s cold and dreary outside, or if you feel like a quiet break, why not come up to the library for some fun activities. See you there!!

Gentle reminder! Whilst it’s wonderful that so many people are regular borrowers during their library time, I would just like to gently remind everyone that books need to be returned through the library computer system. The return box is situated just inside the main door of the library and can be accessed all day everyday during school hours. Please place your books into the box prior to borrowing more books. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Happy reading! Mrs Davies Guided Reading Success! Children in Kindergarten are getting extra benefits of guided reading with Miss Spencer in the classroom. We are reading more complex books and learning how to create new words out of magnetic letters!

Montanna Allwright and Connor Potts enjoy reading with Miss Spencer.

IMPORTANT BOOK CLUB NEWS! Book Club Issue 4 will have been distributed to students this week.

Please have your orders back by FRIDAY 5th JUNE, so that you have the best chance of getting the book/s you have chosen.

Parents, alternatively, can order on-line under the Crookwell Public School link (this earns the school points to get more books for the library and our classrooms), with payments by credit card.

Thanks! The Book Club team

Thank you To the family who donated items of school uniform that they no longer require I extend my gratitude. Your thoughtful and kind actions make a considerable difference to some students’ time at school.

Infants Excursion to Canberra Theatre On Friday 24th July the students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will be travelling to Canberra Theatre to watch the live production of “Stripey The Emu Chick”.

Imagine having to keep track of 30 small emu chicks, who are running here there and everywhere? Well, that’s what Crikey, their emu dad must do…… and when one of them goes missing, that’s when all the fun begins...

Stripey The Emu Chick is based on the hugely successful, award-winning, Stripey series of books by West Australian author, illustrator and artist, Wendy Binks. Stripey will make you laugh and make you cry, but most of all Stripey will simply steal your heart away. With oodles of audience participation, sing-a-long songs and a very cool emu chick called Stripey, Fair Dinkum Flats will never be the same! From Australia’s award-winning producer of musical theatre for kids and families (Possum Magic, Wombat Stew, Peter Rabbit) comes another toe-tapping, knee-slapping, full on musical adventure LIVE ON STAGE!

Students will be leaving school at approximately 9am and returning to school by 4pm. Children who normally catch buses to and from school will need to ensure they are at school on or before 9am. Children will need to bring a packed recess and lunch in separate plastic bags with their names clearly labelled. Disposable drink containers would be a handy idea on this excursion.

The total cost for this excursion is $36 which includes ticket and bus fare. To assist parents in making the payment for this excursion, a payment plan has been set up with first instalment of $12 per child due on 5th June, the second instalment of $12 per child due on the 26th June and the final instalment of $12 per child due on 17th July.

If there are any questions relating to this excursion please feel free to contact the school or come and talk to one of the infants staff members.

Thank you Infants Teachers

National Simultaneous Story time This week students participated in the National Simultaneous Reading Day in which children from all over the country simultaneously read Aaron Blabey’s ‘The Brothers Quibble’. Students took part in several literacy and creative arts based projects before sitting down to a shared reading of the book. Students were also fortunate to watch a short documentary that explained the process as to how Aaron Blabey creates his fabulous picture stories. Everyone had a very enjoyable time and students looked terrific in their ‘spalding’ crowns.

Celebrating 150 Years! Hidden Treasures Crookwell Public School is celebrating 150 years of public education this year and we would like to put a book together that features articles and photographs from our amazing past. If you, your parents, grandparents or great grandparents attended our school as a student or staff member and you have any documents, photos or any piece of history in a safe place at home we would love to have a copy of it to add to our 150th anniversary book. The office staff are more than happy to scan photos or other documents that you might have so we can add these to our collection. Please spread the word so we can make our 150th anniversary book a wonderful piece of history that families can enjoy for years to come.

Thank you, 150th Anniversary Committee Blast from the Past This week’s Blast from the Past features one of our very own! Miss Logan commenced Kindergarten at Crookwell Public School in 1993 and finished in 1999 as a Prefect in Year 6. Miss Logan was taught be Mr Atfield in Year 1 and again in Year 6. Miss Logan is pictured here with Elle Chapman while they were making pre-school student, Laura George, feel most welcome at big school. It is wonderful to have Miss Logan back at Crookwell Public School as a staff member contributing positively to the school and community she holds very dear.

Historical Public Education Snippets

Did You Know? The Public Instruction Act, 1880 required the attendance of children between the ages of 6 and 14 years for a period of not less than 70 days (=14 weeks) every half-year? This compares to about 20 weeks every half-year in 2008.

From 1848 to 1880 tuition fees paid by pupils were used by teachers to augment their income.

Until 1875 parents had to pay one-third of the cost of buildings.

Until 1882 the period of training for teachers was six months with those showing promise receiving 12 months from 1876. P&C Information P&C President News. Hello and welcome to another weekend.

Just a quick reminder that your P&C pie drive order forms need to be back to school with payment by next Friday 5/6/15. The school holidays will be here again before we know it and there will be hungry children wanting something warm and yummy to eat, so stock up the freezer for some easy winter lunch/dinner alternatives. Every order no matter how large or small will contribute in supporting the learning of all students who attend Crookwell Public School.

I would also like to take this opportunity to say “thank you” to all of our volunteers who work within our school and P&C community. I understand that it is not always easy to find extra time to spare in this busy world but your efforts and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated.

Our next P&C meeting will be held next Monday, 1st June at 7pm in our school library and anyone is welcome to attend.

Enjoy your weekend and stay safe.

Sharon King, C.P.S P&C President P&C Secretary News A vote will be taken on Monday 27th July 2015 to adopt a P&C Federation recommended constitution and by-laws. If any member/parent wishes to peruse this document before this meeting, please contact the school office. All members and interested parents are encouraged to attend the meeting on 27th to have their input before a member vote is taken.
