has been looking to improve the front steps and ramp for a

while now and has been granted funds from the Archdiocese.

At the same time there has long been a desire for the church to

have an interior restroom. The council has some plans that will

accomplish both tasks at one time, and entered a phase of dis-

cussion with the Archdiocese that involves the financial piece.

We have already received some very considerable donations,

but still need to generate about $100,000.00. Please consider

making a donation to this historic project that will benefit every

Page 4: TH SUNDAY OF O TIME St John the Baptist

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Welcome to the 24th Week of Ordinary Time! We are only eleven weeks from Advent! Before we get to that eminently hopeful sea-

son however, we will go through All Saints’ Day, Thanksgiving, and Christ the King. Actually, we have two very ancient feasts this week.

Monday, September 14 is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross and stems from the tradition that Constantine’s mother, Saint Helena jour-

neyed from Rome to Jerusalem in search of the holy places of Christ’s life. She instructed the Temple of Aphrodite razed, because this was

believed to be the location of the tomb of Jesus. This is where Constantine then built the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. While they were ex-

cavating the site, the workers found three crosses. Legend has it that the Cross of Christ was identified when a dying woman touched it and

was healed. This cross became an object of veneration and tiny relics of its wood have been carried all over the world. There are several

splinter-sized relics of them in the Archdiocese of St. Louis – including one of greater size at the Cathedral Basilica.

Tuesday, September 15th is the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. We will remember the intense

suffering of Mary and her grief during the passion and death of Jesus. Her sorrows start however much

earlier. When our Lord is still an infant, Joseph and Mary take Him to the temple and the priest Simeon

foretells that her heart will be pierced by a sword, “so that the thoughts of many hearts would be laid

bare.” These sorrows include the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt, the loss of Jesus in the Temple

when He is twelve years old, Mary’s meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary (4th Station), Mary’s standing

by the cross during the crucifixion, her holding of the body of Jesus after it was taken of the cross, and

finally His burial. Through it all, Our Lady’s fiat continues to survive: may it be done unto me according

to your Word.

In other news, our parish continues to raise money toward its goal of adding on to the front of the

church. The plans include a much needed restroom, a new gathering area where parents could take their

children among other things, and a much needed new set of stairs and ramp. If you would like to help

make this a reality, please go the Our Sunday Visitor website or make a check out to St. John’s Gildehaus Church and put it in a envelope

marked for the addition. Thank you for all that you are doing!

Every September we commemorate the tragic attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon that resulted in the loss of so many

lives and great injury to the American spirit. This past Friday marked the passing of nineteen years from the events. We remember and pray

for those who died, for those who have defended our freedom, for those who watch over our country now, and for the conversion of our ene-

mies. May every citizen think back to the common interest we once held in the initial aftermath of those unforgettable hours and embrace our

country completely. May we love the fact that our nation allows differences of thought and opinion to be voiced and contested over, so that

we can come to an understanding with civility. God bless us with patience, fortitude, patriotism, and religion – and may God bless America!

May God bless you and be your Strength,

Father Foy

From a sermon by Saint Bernard, abbot

His mother stood by the cross

The martyrdom of the Virgin is set forth both in the prophecy of Simeon and in the actual story of our Lord’s passion. The holy old man said of the infant Jesus: He has been established as a sign which will be contradicted. He went on to say to Mary: And your own heart will be

pierced by a sword.

Truly, O blessed Mother, a sword has pierced your heart. For only by passing through your heart could the sword enter the flesh of your Son. Indeed, after your Jesus—who belongs to everyone, but is especially yours—gave up his life, the cruel spear, which was not withheld from his

lifeless body, tore open his side. Clearly it did not touch his soul and could not harm him, but it did pierce your heart. For surely his soul was no longer there, but yours could not be torn away. Thus the violence of sorrow has cut through your heart, and we rightly call you more than

martyr, since the effect of compassion in you has gone beyond the endurance of physical suffering.

Or were those words, Woman, behold your Son, not more than a word to you, truly piercing your heart, cutting through to the division between soul and spirit? What an exchange! John is given to you in place of Jesus, the servant in place of the Lord, the disciple in place of the master;

the son of Zebedee replaces the Son of God, a mere man replaces God himself. How could these words not pierce your most loving heart, when the mere remembrance of them breaks ours, hearts of iron and stone though they are!

Do not be surprised, brothers, that Mary is said to be a martyr in spirit. Let him be surprised who does not remember the words of Paul, that one of the greatest crimes of the Gentiles was that they were without love. That was far from the heart of Mary; let it be far from her servants.

Perhaps someone will say: “Had she not known before that he would not die?” Undoubtedly. “Did she not expect him to rise again at once?”

Surely. “And still she grieved over her crucified Son?” Intensely. Who are you and what is the source of your wisdom that you are more sur-prised at the compassion of Mary than at the passion of Mary’s Son? For if he could die in body, could she not die with him in spirit? He died in body through a love greater than anyone had known. She died in spirit through a love unlike any other since his.
