It is time to head to Fort Worth on January 13-17th for a TLBAA event extravaganza, filled with exciting Texas Longhorn fun. TheMiniature Texas Longhorn Breeders Group will start off Longhorn Weekend with a meeting at 8:00 am at the Burnett Room at theRaddison Fort Worth Fossil Creek. The 2012 TLBAA Affiliate President’s Meeting will also be held on Friday at 8 am at the Parker &Picket Room. The 2012 TLBAA General Membership Meeting will be next on the Friday’s schedule at 10 am in the Spring Palace &West Brook room. Later in the evening at 6 pm, the Annual Awards Banquet will be held in the Flat Iron room. The Radisson has gen-erously offered a reduced rate of $85 for TLBAA members. Elmer Parker Lifetime AwardLifetime Devotion to the Texas Longhorn Breed and Its

BreedersElmer Parker was a longtime employee and manag-

er of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Longhornherd. Parker joined the staff at the Refuge in 1946,learning from the previous Longhorn managers: EarlDrummond, Heck Schrader and Joe Bill Lee. In 1968,he took over the responsibilities of the Longhorns at theRefuge and continued until his retirement in 1981.Thus, the continuity of Longhorn expertise at theRefuge continued for more than half a century.

Special Awards Given by TLBAA

The Dave Evans Breeder of the Year AwardPerpetuation and Promotion of the Texas Longhorn BreedA native Texan, Dave Evans entered the Texas Longhorn industry in

1977, establishing the Yellow Pine Ranch at Cuchara, CO. He and his wife,Billicarole, quickly became enthusiastic about the breed and additionalranches were purchased to supplement the original ranch.

Evans served on the Board of Directors of both the TLBAA and theMountains & Plains Texas Longhorn Association. He also served terms asTLBAA Vice-President. He was a founding partner and host of the ColoradoNational Texas Longhorn Sale, a record-breaking event when it started in1981, which continued to be one of the industry’s major events for manyyears.

From the start, Evans realized the necessity of using the best bulls avail-able in the breed in order to develop a top herd. His goal was to breed forconsistent size as well as correctness and outstanding horns. He purchasedTexas Ranger JR in 1980, and then Dixie Rebel and Major Investment. In1986, Evans acquired CT Spoty Ruler, the bull he considered to be the besthe’d ever owned.

Before his untimely death, Evans had succeeded in breeding a herd ofTexas Longhorns that were well recognized in the breed. Mel Raley Rising StarMel Raley will always be remem-

bered as a shining star for the TLBAA

because of his ability to share his vastknowledge of the Longhorn breed withnew members. This special recognition isawarded to those who have been a mem-ber for less than five years and throughinvolvement and sustained enthusiasmhave made a positive impact on theirpeers and on the Longhorn breed.

Dave Evans Breeder ofthe Year

Dave Evans was an enthusiasticbreeder of Texas Longhorns, who servedthe TLBAA in many capacities. Before hisuntimely death, Evans had succeeded inbreeding a herd of Texas Longhorns thatwere well recognized in the breed. In hishonor, this award is given to individualswho have dedicated themselves to thebetterment of the Texas Longhornthrough their breeding program.

Elmer Parker LifetimeAchievement AwardElmer Parker was a livestock handler

and technician at the Wichita WildlifeRefuge in Oklahoma for many years andhe played an important part in the histo-ry of the Longhorn breed. In recognitionfor Parker’s diligent contribution of shar-ing his knowledge over a period of sever-al years, and for his concern for accuracyand sincerity in the breeding of TexasLonghorns, this award honors thosemembers, who have been dedicated tothe preservation and promotion of theLonghorn breed, qualities that Parkerwas known for.

The 2011 TLBAA Horn Showcase committee; Lana Hightower, Dora Thompson, Donnie Taylor, Larry Smith, Craig Perez,

and Robert Richey would like to acknowledge and thank the many folks that helped to make this year’s event the singular suc-

cess it was. First we would acknowledge our office staff and foremost would be Pam Galloway, in charge of her first TLBAA

Horn Showcase, she was our contact, the one that made ideas happen, got us answers and was a valuable team leader. Also

thanks to Kim Barfield who got us going in the beginning and provided essential oversight until the event was concluded.

Coral Bucy deserves special recognition for her TLBAA Horn Showcase E-Trails set up and the many timely eblasts she sent

the membership keeping them informed. We also acknowledge the Trails staff, Editor Laura Standley and Myra Basham for this

year’s great showcase program and sale catalog. Finally, to these people and Rick Fritche, Dana Coomer, Amber LeBlanc,

Dawn LeBlanc and Troy Robinett for the countless behind the scenes chores, for being there throughout the event and seeing

Our success this year was in large part due to the many TLBAA members that donated items for the various raffles. The

Dear TLBT Members,As the year is coming to a close, I hope you remember 2011 with fond memories. For some of us it’s been a tough year. We’ve

faced the worst drought our area has ever seen, and we’ve had to cut our herds back to try and survive until the rains come again.Many breeders in our area worry that they won’t have hay to make it through the winter. But with the New Year approaching, comeshope that 2012 will bring better times. Christmas is here and the New Year is right around the corner! I wish all of youa Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May the New Year bring rain andprosperity!

Just a little reminder, there will be a TLBT General MembershipMeeting in January during the Fort Worth Stock Show &Rodeo. If you will be at this show, please make it a priority toattend. Adults are welcome to attend as well. We would likefor you to come and tell us your opinions about the TLBT andif there is anything you would like to add or change to anything thatwe are doing. We want to make this a great and enjoyable year for all.

When and how did you start raising and show-ing Texas Longhorns?I started showing Longhorns when I was five years old in2005. After seeing my brothers and sisters show, I want-ed to learn how to do it too. It took me a little whilebecause I have Arthrogryposis and had some troublewalking and holding on to my calf back then, but I’velearned that if you stay committed, you can do almostanything.

What are some important things you havelearned from showing and raising Longhorns? I have learned to never give up even if I fall, get kicked,or lose control of my calf. Always keep going and staycommitted to your goals.

What would you tell someone just getting start-ed in raising Texas Longhorns? I would tell some-one interested in raising Texas Longhorns that they arereally sweet and gentle animals. They are unique andbeautiful creatures with gentle dispositions for the mostpart.

What is your favorite part of raising and show-ing Texas Longhorns?My favorite part of raising and showing Longhorns iswinning scholarship money and other prizes. I love thefeeling of getting first place in a class, especially inshowmanship.

he most recent addition to the FortWorth Herd was born in March,2003. Registered in the TLBAA as

Whelming Thunder, he is the son of Deigo’sEmperor and Whelming Ruth. Corky andJane Crumbaugh of Catlett, Virginia, arelisted as the breeders. Once owned in a part-nership of Stephen and Kim Head with RossPolk, the Heads had acquired full ownershipprior to donating the steer to the Fort WorthHerd this summer.

Kristin Jaworski, Trail Boss of the FortWorth Herd, had met Stephen and KimHead at the Autobahn Scholarship show inFort Worth. The Heads had hauled severalanimals for the event. They thought Thun-der would be a good fit for the Herd, and de-cided to donate him rather than take himback to their Double H Ranch in Angleton,Texas.

And a “good fit” he surely is!“He is a beautiful steer,” Kristin said. “I

guess you would call him a tri-color. He’s gota brindle head and neck with some brindlespots on his body. He is a mature steer, andwe had him driving in the first two weeks.We got him August 3, 2011, and he got rightinto the program. He has a good dispositionand gets along with the other steers real well.He settled in like he had been here for years;I was real proud of him.”

“When we pushed him down the streetthe first time, we learned real quick that thissteer has to be first. He wants to be at thefront, and no matter where he is, he’s goingto find his way to the front.”

“The lead steer has given him a run,” shesaid, “but we might have to look at chang-ing that bell, because Thunder has been firsta lot lately. He has a comfort zone right be-hind that lead horse; that’s where he likes tobe. You can box him in with three horses andhe is perfectly comfortable. If you push himin with steers, he doesn’t want to be there; hewants to be up front with horses.”

“Thunder is in good health, good flesh;has great conformation, he’s real pretty tolook at, and is an easy keeper. He has uniquehorns – one horn droops down a little bit --unlike anything we have had before.”

“We included him in the Red SteagallCowboy Gathering cattle drive this year.That’s pretty impressive for a steer that camein in August, and by October he’s makingthat trip down Main Street. We had to prac-tice a couple of times – we practiced forThunder. We brought in the wagons for RedSteagall on Friday, October 23. That is theonly day in the year that we put the steers onMain Street. Taking him off of Exchange Av-enue, changing his routine and out of the el-ements that he normally is used to – he wasobviously a new steer that’s never been onthat route before, so we did some practicecattle drives before the actual event. Heworked just pretty good – he wanted to befirst – ahead of us! I would say he likes at-tention.”

When a new steer is added to the herd,Kristin and her drovers do some practicedrives early in the morning when the envi-ronment is more controlled and there are no

spectators, so if he gets away they can get himback. They drive at 9:00 o’clock, then 10:00o’clock, then at 11:30 and at 4:00 p.m., sothey go four times up and down the street onthe first day.

“When we have an event,” explainedKristin, “when we are going to change theirroutine, I like to practice to make sure all oursafety procedures are in place. We did thatwith him and we actually drove him downMain Street twice before the Red Steagallevent just to be sure he was going to be com-fortable. And he wanted to be first – he wentreally, really fast! He’s hard to keep up with,but he did really good.”

“There’s a lot of pressure on the cattleduring that event,” Kristin observed. “You’vegot those twenty wagons behind you; you’vegot media, you’ve got PA systems, a lot ofcrowd activities, elevated sounds and a lot ofexternal influences. It’s a lot of pressure, andthey did great!”

“The crowd was elbow to elbow all theway down Exchange Avenue, and believe itor not, with that many people, the steers dobetter – they stay right in the middle of thestreet.”

In regard to Thunder, Kristin observedthat they haven’t had him all that long, buthe is real quiet, not a fence jumper, and hewants to be with the horses. “It’s real inter-esting,” she said, “because the other steersare just the opposite; they don’t want thatpressure put on them. But that’s where he iscomfortable, so we have learned that and wetry to make him comfortable. You neverknow – he might be wearing the bell some-day.”

“In fact, Mr. and Mrs. Head had sent mea letter that they saw the article in the Trails,and they saw a video of the trail drive whereThunder was the lead steer. They said itlooked like he was walking the route a littlefaster than the rest of the Herd. And it’sfunny that they say that, because he is quick!We have to slow him down every day – webox him in with three horses – the lead horseand two on the sides and he’s fine. He won’tchallenge a horse. But he’ll get past you ifyou’re not paying attention!”

“He keeps us on our toes, but we have re-ally enjoyed him – he is a really good steer.”

George O. Gillespie -1927-2011

Lifetime TLBAA member,George O. Gillespie, fondlyknown by all as “Mr. George,”passed away peacefully in hissleep on July 5, 2011 at the age of84. George was preceded in deathby his loving wife, Eileen, whopassed away just a short sevenmonths earlier in late December2010. George and Eileen lived in San

Antonio and were the proud own-ers of the beautiful Black Jack Ranch nearMountain Home, Texas. They have beenTexas Longhorn breeders for countless yearsand the Black Ranch was home to over 400head of straight WR cattle with all blood-lines going to those on the refuge. Georgegraduated from Texas A&M in 1948 andspent numerous years in the banking indus-try. They bought land outside of Kerrvilleand brought their first Texas Longhorns tothe ranch in 1986. After retirement, Georgebecame a dedicated and avid rancher.The Gillespies were also members and

steadfast supporters of the South TexasLonghorn Association. The STLA honoredthis special couple with a Lifetime Achieve-ment Award presented at the STLA Field Dayin May 2007. In October 2008, George andEileen treated STLA members and otherguests to a large Field Day event at the BlackJack Ranch which included a campfirebreakfast, a bar-b-que lunch, ranch toursand demonstrations, guest speakers, and a

New Veterinary AssistantMaterials May Give KidsEarly Start On Animal

Health CareersCourtesy of AgriLife Today By: Kathleen PhillipsCOLLEGE STATION - Kids who love animalsand science can start preparing for their animalhealth career as early as 8 years old via a veteri-nary science curriculum that is going online na-tionwide.

“We didn’t have to create an interest for this;it’s already there,” said Dr. Floron “Buddy”Faries. “And that interest has created a demand.”

“Veterinary Science: Preparatory Training forthe Veterinary Assistant” was written by Faries,a Texas AgriLife Extension Service veterinarian,to meet that demand.

The concept is not new, Faries said, but thenew training curriculum was fueled by additionaljob possibilities in areas such as homeland secu-rity, laboratory technology and public health. Infact, the National Center for Foreign Animal andZoonotic Disease Defense, a U.S. Department ofHomeland Security Science and TechnologyCenter of Excellence, funded the project andpublished the educational resources.

The new curriculum will prepare students fora job as a veterinary assistant or to continue intoa college-level program as a veterinary techni-cian or a veterinarian, Faries said.

The course is already being taught to at least5,000 youths in about 100 Texas counties via 4-H, the youth development arm of AgriLife Ex-tension, he said. It also continues to be used byhigh school agriculture instructors, as it was ap-proved by the Texas Education Agency.

“Young people often have an interest in vet-erinary medicine, so we want to satisfy that in-terest early,” Faries said. “And the other side ofthis is that job opportunities in this field continueto grow.”

Much of the job growth in veterinary scienceis in regulatory matters pertaining to homelandsecurity or global public health issues, he said.Currently there are more than 95,400 veterinari-ans practicing in the U.S., about two-thirds ofwho are in private practice, according to theAmerican Veterinary Medical Association. Therest work for a variety of public or private enti-ties.

The curriculum has a total of 100 lessons: 75core lessons in basic veterinary science and 25lessons in clinical science and technology. Fiftyadditional lessons are being developed to covertopics such as One Health science and technol-ogy (the interface between animal and humanhealth), along with laboratory science and tech-nology for those who wish to pursue non-clinicalcareers.

Faries said that depending on the student, thecurriculum can be accomplished in differentways.

“A 4-H club might opt to offer 20 lessons ayear over a five-year period,” he said. “Or a highschool class might complete the instruction inone year with daily lessons.”

With the modernization of the content, addi-tional teaching materials are offered online athttp://aevm.tamu.edu/. About 100 presentationsessions are available online, and Faries alsoteaches classes via the Internet.

Though the curriculum is currently structuredto meet educational needs of young people,Faries said, a fee-based version is being createdonline for high school graduates who want topursue a career as a veterinary assistant.

With proper preventative and treatmentmethods, producers can control manycommon internal and external parasites incattle. Common important internal para-sites of cattle are hairworms, lung worms,liver flukes and coccidia. Common externalparasites include horn flies, lice and grubs.

internal parasites Hairworms

The gastrointestinal tract of cattle isoften infected with hairworms, also calledstomach worms and intestinal worms.These worms are transmitted when:

1. Infected cattle pass eggs in manureonto the ground;

2. Eggs hatch in the manure; 3. Rain washes the larvae from the ma-

nure; and 4. Cattle swallow larvae on wet grass in

moderate temperatures. The worms mature in about 3 weeks

and lay eggs. In June, July and August, lar-val development of the brown stomachworm, the most common and harmful ofthe hairworms, is inhibited in the stomachlining. The worms are usually transmittedwhen soil temperatures are 55°F to 85°F inrainy periods in spring (April through June)and fall (October). Pasture larvae hibernatein winter (November through March) anddie from heat, sunlight, drying and nutri-ent depletion in summer (July throughSeptember).

Normally the disease (wormy cattle) issecondary to inadequate nutrition. Poornutritional management practices such asovercrowdedness and overgrazing create in-adequate nutrition and allow cattle to bereinfected continuously. Under these con-ditions, the cattle’s gastrointestinal tractsare a suitable environment for worms to es-tablish; their immune response is low, al-lowing establishment; and being in poorcondition, the wormy cattle cannot with-stand effects of the worms.

The primary malnutrition condition, aprotein deficiency, worsens because the lar-vae interfere with digestion, causing diar-rhea and reducing the appetite.

Calves have low immunity and usuallybecome wormy during their exposures.Heavy exposures cause disease; light expo-sures produce immunity. Adult cattle andyoung cattle have immunity from previousexposures, but often be come wormy when:

• Nutrition is inadequate and their im-munity has lowered;

• Brown stomach worm larvae have

emerged from the stomach lining inSeptember; and

• Heavy exposures have occurred. Clinical signs of wormy cattle include

pale mucous membranes, bottle jaw, potbelly, diarrhea, drawed, not grazing, notchewing cud, rough and dry haircoat, thin-ness, weakness and inability to stand. Thesesigns are similar to those caused by malnu-trition and liver flukes.

The most important way to controlhairworms is to maintain good nutritionby:

• Rotating pastures; • Preventing overcrowding and over-grazing; and

• Providing good quality pasture, hayand supplements.

When cattle have a diet with enoughprotein, vitamins and minerals, fewerworms are normally established and thecattle are more able to withstand their ef-fects. Management practices that maintaingood nutrition also prevent severe reinfec-tion of worms. Additional control meas-ures include proper drainage andsanitation, separating age groups andstrategic worming.

lung worms

Lung worms cause a lung disease in cat-tle with clinical signs similar to thosecaused by viruses, bacteria and allergies.Transmission and control are the same asfor hairworms. Lung worm disease occursin previously unexposed cattle, such as incalves or moved cattle.

liver flukes

Cattle living in wet areas with alkalinesoils may develop liver fluke infections.Liver flukes are transmitted when:

1. Infected cattle, deer and rabbits passeggs in manure and drop the ma-nure in water;

2. Eggs hatch in water and larvae de-velop in snails; and

3. Cattle swallow cysts on grass or hay. Clinical signs of digestive inefficiency

are evident in young cattle with acute liverdisease and in older cattle with chronicliver disease. Fluky cattle show signs similarto those with malnutrition and hair worms.

strategic worming

Wormers are administered to cattle notonly as a treatment to kill internal parasitesand to stop damage caused by parasites,but also to prevent pasture contaminationand reinfection of the cattle. Strategicallyadministering drugs reduces environmen-tal contamination and infection of cattle

and snails. A strategic method requires proper tim-

ing. This means that a drug against a para-site must be administered at the right timeconsidering the parasite’s biology. There-fore, the correct time is not when the cattleare confined and accessible, or because ithas been a long time since the cattle re-ceived a drug, or because administrationsare spaced evenly (fall and spring, every 6months). The correct time is when cattlehave become infected, the parasite is be-ginning to develop and cause damage, andconditions are best for transmission.

Administering a drug at the right timebreaks the life cycle of the worms and pre-vents them from building up in cattle. Theright time to administer cattle wormersnormally depends on the parasite and thedevelopment of optimal environmentalconditions, which include moderate tem-peratures, rainfall and wet grass. For stom-ach worms, administer drugs 3 to 6 weeksafter optimal environmental conditions de-velop. For liver flukes, administer drugs 4to 6 months after optimal conditions arepresent.

Examine feces each month to checkfluctuations of worm eggs per gram offeces, which will help you time the drug ad-ministration properly and monitor the ef-fectiveness of your control measures.

Drugs to control internal parasitesshould supplement but not replace man-agement practices to improve sanitationand nutrition. Table 1 shows what productscan be used for various parasites and howto administer them.

Coccidia

Coccidia cause an intestinal disease ofyoung cattle, usually 3 weeks to 6 monthsold, but can affect cattle up to 2 years old.They are transmitted when:

1. Infected cattle pass cysts in manureonto the ground;

2. Rain washes the cysts from the ma-nure;

3. The cysts develop under moist andmoderate temperature conditions;and

4. Cattle swallow cysts on moistground.

As with hairworms and lung worms,transmission is common during rainytimes in spring and fall. The diarrheacaused by coccidia may be confused withthe diarrhea caused by hairworms, bacteriaand viruses.

cidia. Effective drugs are amprolium (Am-prol®, Corid®), decoquinate (Deccox®),lasalocid (Bovatec®), and sulfonamides.After 1 week of optimal conditions, ad-minister the drug in feed or water for 2weeks to calves maintained in a manure-contaminated environment, such as hayingand feeding areas. Control measures in-clude the management practices for hair-worms.

ExtErnal parasitEs Horn flies

Horn flies reproduce in fresh cattle ma-nure from early spring to late fall. Horn flypopulations usually peak in late spring andagain in late summer or early fall. Hot, dryconditions may naturally reduce horn flynumbers during mid-summer. Thousandsof flies may infest a single animal, causingextreme nervousness and energy loss. Hornflies suck blood, irritate and annoy, reduceweight gains and cause weight losses. Theannoyance and irritation interfere with cat-tle’s feeding and resting. Treatment is economically justified

when horn fly populations reach 250 perhead. To control them satisfactorallythroughout the season, use self-treatmentinsecticides or routinely apply spray, pour-on, spot-on or dust chemicals. Used properly, self-treatment devices

are more effective than hand application incontrolling horn flies and lice. Such devicesinclude oil back rubbers, dust bags andtubes, liquid wicks and impregnated ear

tags. Insecticide-impregnated ear tags con-trol horn flies well for 2 to 5 months if theyare properly attached to the ear and ifpyrethroid resistance is not a factor. Cur-rently labeled ear tags contain either apyrethroid, an organo-phosphate or apyrethroid/organophosphate/synergistmixture. Pyrethroid ear tags (permethrin, fen-

valerate) have induced widespread horn flyresistance. Vary the types of ear tag insecti-cides rather than using the same kind yearafter year. Remove tags as soon as possibleonce they have lost their effectiveness inkilling horn flies. Tags used 4 to 5 monthsemit too little insecticide to control fly pop-ulations adequately. Tags emitting reduceddoses seem to add to the resistance prob-lem by prolonging fly exposure, thus mak-ing the surviving population more resistantto the insecticide.

lice

Biting lice and blood-sucking lice aretransmitted between cattle by contact, es-pecially in the fall, winter and spring whenegg production increases in cool weather.Because cattle tend to bunch up more incold weather, uncontrolled lice spread eas-ily from animal to animal and quickly in-fest an entire herd. Lice cause a condition called lousy, an

itching skin disease with possible anemia.Clinical signs are dry, scaly skin, hair lossand itching exhibited by biting, rubbingand scratching. Lice bites and allergies tolice cause the itching. The allergic dermati-

tis may persist after the lice are gone. Thesesigns may be confused with malnutritionand allergies caused by horn flies, mosqui-toes and gnats. Although chemicals do not harm lice

eggs, cattle can be treated effectively by ad-ministering insecticides twice at a 2-weekinterval or once with avermectins(Ivomec®, Eprinex®, Dectomax®) or milbe-mycin (Cydectin®). Use spray, dust, pour-on, spot-on, injection or self-treatmentmethods in fall and winter for control. In-jection does not work for biting lice.

Grubs

Cattle grubs (warbles, wolves) are lar-vae of heel flies, which lay eggs on hairs ofthe lower legs of cattle in late winter andspring. Grubs appear in the backs of cattlein winter. The migratory damage by thegrubs in cattle causes weight losses and re-duces weight gains and milk production. To control grubs, administer systemic

organophosphate insecticides (CoRal®,Warbex®, Spotton®, Neguvon®, Tiguvon®,Prolate®), avermectins (Ivomec®, Eprinex®,Dectomax®) or milbemycin (Cydectin®) tocattle no later than 3 months before grubsappear in the back. Use pour-on, spot-on,spray or injection methods to kill migrat-ing grubs before they reach the esophagus.If cattle are not treated for cattle grubs inthe summer, the systemic organophosphateinsecticides and avermectins used in the falland winter for control of lice, horn flies,and worms may cause reactions in theesophagus if many grubs are present.

NEWS On the Trail...

WICHITA, Kan. – Kansas offi-cials wanted to kick off a specialparade celebrating 150 years ofstatehood with a bang, featuringsomething historic, symbolic andflat-out awe-inspiring.

In this former 19th centurycowtown along the famousChisholm Trail, a herd of TexasLonghorns fit the bill perfectly.

Kansas Governor SamBrownback saddled up to lead120 entries through downtownWichita in early October trailedby 30 longhorn steers as about3,000 spectators waved from thesidewalks. He was accompaniedby cattlemen from throughout Kansas whohelped drive the herd.

“Our objective was to show the publicthe quality of care we give our animals and,while we had their attention, remind them ofthe industry’s significant contributions to thestate’s economy,” said Ken Grecian, of Palco,president of the Kansas LivestockAssociation, sponsor of the parade entry.

Indeed, the animals do live a pamperedlife, according to owner Wes Sander, whoranches north of Woodward, Okla.

“We treat them real good,” he said byphone after one of several cattle auctions heattends weekly. “Some of them are 20 yearsold now.”

They’ve also paid their way without evergoing to the packinghouse.

“We usually book them for 12 to 15events a year,” Sander said. “Some years it’smore than that.”

Not only are the animals trained to driveand good at trailing a horse. They have to beready to load up on a semi-truck to travel toengagements that might be as far away asDetroit, where 120 of them were hired by theChrysler Corporation in early 2008 to helpintroduce the latest version of the DodgeRam pickup, one of their more unusualappearances.

“They’re pretty acclimated to just aboutanything,” Sander said. “They’ve had F-15fighter jets and helicopters flying abovethem. They are really docile. And they arevery smart.”

They also need the right temperament forthe job, and if they get cranky, their travelingdays are over.

The key to driving them is to make sureno animal gets separated and can always getback quickly with the rest of the herd, Sandersaid.

Sander has kept as many as 350 long-horns at one time, all steers, typically weigh-

ing 1,300 to 1,500 pounds each. Thewhole thing started back in 1997 whenhe first encountered a set of 44 at a cat-tle sale and couldn’t let them go to thepacker buyer.

“That’s not something you’re goingto get a second chance at,” he said,recalling the purchase.

And he had an idea. The annualWoodward Elks Lodge rodeo hadattempted to re-enact a cattle drive withregular rodeo stock and never hadmuch success. Organizers were lookingfor a promotional gig that would makea splash and now Sander had a newapproach to making it happen.

“We drove them into town four daysbefore the rodeo started, and it was a big hit.The rest is history,” Sander said.

Rodeo contractors started calling, inter-ested in bringing the longhorns to theirevents. After making appearances at arearodeos and wild-west shows, they werebooked for Colorado’s Greeley Stampede.They have also appeared regularly atCheyenne Frontier Days.

“I don’t know of any other herds that canbe loaded up in a truck, hauled 700 milesand driven through town in a parade,”Sander said.

Sander is one of several family partnersin the historic Chain Ranch, headquarteredin Canton and comprised of multiple ranch-es in Oklahoma and Kansas. While theranch’s 3,000-plus-head cowherd is now pre-dominantly Angus and Red Angus — breedsthat began to eclipse the Southern-bred long-horn cattle in the early 1900s — he’simpressed by some of the traits longhornsbring to the table.

“They are hardy. They don’t need muchfeed in the winter. And they are really adapt-able,” he said.

Texas longhorns trace their beginnings to

horned cattle brought to the West byChristopher Columbus and eventuallyto Mexico by settlers. The wild cattlemigrated northward and grew in num-bers along with the Texas ranchingindustry. They were ideally suited to thecattle drives of the late 1800s since theycould be driven long distances withoutlosing weight.

After the British breeds began arrivingfrom the East Coast, longhorns fell out offavor and became nearly extinct before twofederally protected herds were established inOklahoma and Nebraska. In 1964, the TexasLonghorn Breeders Association of Americawas formed in Lawton, Okla., with the goalof reviving the breed. The association is nowbased in Ft. Worth. There are an estimated250,000 head in the country today.

In addition to their lanky bodies andbrindle hides, they are distinctive for hornsthat routinely span seven feet across.

Ideally, Sander said he would like to have100 head of longhorns grazing his pastures.But with feed costs high and feed availabilitylimited, he has been forced to make the samehard choices as his neighbors.

“This has been a tough year because ofthe drought. We’ve had to downsize the long-horn herd,” he said.

Though the last 45 days have broughtsome much-needed rains to the area, Sanderstill had to let a few go to the fate he once res-cued them from.

“You get pretty attached to them. It’s hardto sell those big boys,” he said. “But howeveryou look at it, they’ve had a good life.”

Spring Calving:1. Continue feeding program designed forOctober and November. As winter approachesand warm season grasses become weathered, theprotein and energy values of your pastures willdecrease substantially. Nutritional deficienciesare most likely to occur during December,January, February and March. Nutrient needsduring this period are extremely critical. If pasture grassis plentiful, but dormant and poor in quality,then protein is generally your first concern.Assuming that your cows are in good bodycondition, feeding low levels of a high crudeprotein supplement (32-40 percent crudeprotein) is your best alternative. If your cows arethin in body condition, then feeding higherlevels of a low crude protein, high energy rangecube (20 percent crude protein) will provideincreased intake of vital nutrients. If winterpasture or cool season variety grasses areavailable, then the females should not needadditional energy or protein supplementation. Asource of salt as well as a good commercialcalcium-phosphorus mineral mix with addedVitamin A should be available on a free choicebasis.2. Evaluate the growth of your bred heifers. Thegoal should be to have your bred heifers weigh85 percent of their mature weight, including theweight of the fetus, prior to calving at 23-25months of age. Because of this threshold weight,bred heifers should be fed to gain a minimum ofone pound per day.Fall Calving:1. Continue the feeding program begun in

October. The nutrient requirements for energy,protein, minerals and vitamins of lactatingfemales increase substantially. During the first 3-4 months of lactation, a 1,000 pound cow with

Make sure that yourfemales are receiving adequate nutrition so thatthey will cycle at the first of the breeding season.Feeding 3-4 pounds of a 40 percent CPsupplement, 4-6 pounds of a 30 percent CPsupplement or 6-8 pounds of a 20 percent CPsupplement per head per day should beadequate to meet most protein and energyneeds. Choice of appropriate supplement (20percent CP, 30 percent CP or 40 percent CP)should be based upon cheapest source ofprotein. Price per pound of protein may bedetermined by dividing the cost per pound of

protein supplement by the percentage of crudeprotein in the supplement. A source of salt aswell as a good commercial calcium: phosphorusmineral mix with added Vitamin A should beavailable on a free choice basis. If your cows arethin in body condition, then feedingsupplemental hay plus higher levels of a lowcrude protein, high energy range cube (20percent crude protein) will provide increasedintake of vital nutrients. Young, lactating femaleshave 20-25 percent greater supplemental needsthan mature cows. Watch body condition closelyand increase supplemental feed accordingly.2. Provide supplemental feed for bulls grazingdry, dormant range grass according to age andcondition of the bulls: (a) feed mature bulls 3-4pounds of a 40 percent crude protein range cubedaily; (b) feed young bulls 8-10 pounds of a highenergy, 20 percent crude protein cattle cubedaily; and (c) supplement additional feed asnecessary to keep bulls in good body conditionas breeding season approaches.3. Vaccinate cows prior to breeding season forleptospirosis. Consult your local veterinarianabout needs for vibriosis vaccination. �

In 1964, a small group of concerned cattlemen banded together to preserve the unique

heritage of Texas Longhorn cattle. With this goal, they established the Texas

Longhorn Breeders Association of America (TLBAA) to maintain the breed registry and to promote the

magnificent breed to as many persons as possible.
