Telecommunications.

‘Telecommunications is a general term for a vast array of technologies that send information over distances. Mobile phones, land lines, satellite phones and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) are all telephony technologies -- just one field of telecommunications. Radio, television and networks are a few more examples of telecommunication.’WISGEEK.ORG (2012) what is telecommunications? [WWW] Wisegeek.org. Available from: http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-telecommunications.htm [Accessed 13/01/13].

Also telecommunications can be abbreviated to ‘telecoms’.

Older Forms of ‘Telecoms’.• ‘While most people associate telecommunications with modern technologies, the strict definition of the term encompasses primitive and even ancient forms of telecommunication. Among these is the use of smoke signals as a kind of visual telegraph. Puffs of smoke were time-released by smothering a fire with a blanket, then quickly removing and replacing the blanket. Widely used by the American Indians, smoke signals could communicate short messages over long distances, assuming a clear line of sight’ WISGEEK.ORG (2012) what is telecommunications? A bit about how the telephone was founded. • There was actually a 10 year debate as to who created the

telephone:• - Alexander Graham Bell (patented 1876) discovered that the telegraph

wires could be used to send continuous current variations representing a speech signal

• Elisha Gray (invented the telephone at the same time as Bell, but lost out in a 10 year patent dispute)

Did You Know?• The Mobile System consists of cells. It breaks down its

areas which forms these small transmisson cells.• Cells- radio frequencies used in local areas.• In each cell- Base station transmitter/reciever of radio

system. • In phone- A radio transmitter/reciever.

• WATCH OUT:• Anywhere you are, your network can find your location and

trace your position via your phone this is through your mobile system.

First phone 1973• ‘Martin Cooper and the First Cell Phone. You might not recognize Martin Cooper’s name but you’ve probably seen his picture because he was photographed excessively when he made the first call on the world’s first cell phone back in 1973’. Phone Telecoms - old

TELECOMMUNICATIONS (2012) Rotary dial phone [Online image]. Available from: http://rogermontgomery.com/category/telecommunications/ [Accessed 13/01/13].

The phone is a main form of telecommunication, it allows us to talk to people miles away from us using our phone lines which we pay for. This image is an example of an old rotary dial phone. It sends electrical pulses, known as pulse dialling corresponding to the number dialled. Around in the 1900s it is rather old fashioned compared to what we have available on the market today.

Phone Telecoms Throughout The Ages

These are some examples of how mobile (cell) phones have changed throughout the years, with each new phone came improvements in telecommunications with clearer signals and even instant messaging, knowing in today’s society as ‘texting’. The latest mobiles do not have cords which you used to pull in order to get a better signal, there is also a noticeable difference in the size of them, they are now conveniently pocket sized rather than cumbersome.

Modern phones for telecommunication

IPHONE (n.d.) EarPods [Online image]. Available from: http://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/features/ [Accessed 13/01/13].

This is the latest telecommunication phone called the IPhone. It has been created by the company Apple and there are currently five IPhone's with the IPhone 5 being released last year. It is wireless and has a different form of telecommunication called facetime, which allows people with IPhones to communicate to one another but also see each other as they talk which is rather like Skype. There is also instant messaging and makes standard phone calls.

12

DID YOU KNOW?

•That it was hard to sell the idea of a telephone to the general public (a two way communication device). However, once it became mobile, it became extremely popular and successful.

Mobile telecommunicating

“Data transmission via computer with no fixed physical link”

Things like laptops, smartphones and PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistance) such as Ipads are examples of how telecommunicating has developed.

Each communicating device has a specific purpose and all are used to connect via the ‘out side world’.

These devices are increasing with intelligence and are finding new ways to help connect to a specific destination using things like apps and features (upgrades) to demonstrate that and to become successful ideas against the strong competition of arising components.

Things such as our phone contact list, our facebook and twitter applications and skype accounts are examples of how we use our telegraphy equipment to help connect.

Page 14: Telecommunications

14

Did you know?

•Throughout our contact list on our phonebook or even on a social networking site such as Facebook, we would have at most around 10 people of whom we have ‘strong-ties’ with; people that we contact the most and interact with. This could also be known as ‘Tight Knit family or friends’.

15

Society within Telegraphy

• It is thought that people of younger ages are much more likely to be INVOLVED within society, gaining a higher social life as they are more interactive online or having the knowledge of how to use more recent technology such as the ipod or ipad. Meaning they have more opportunity of USING the technology appropriately.

• Philip Gould admits ‘but on balance i suspect they are having a lot more fun than the rest of us’

• It has also been argued that kids live in a virtual world which is difficult to escape from! (WARNING: Iphones can be highly addictive).

15

Page 16: Telecommunications

16

The Internet• As we all know Tim Bernes Lee created the internet in

1990• However, from this first development the internet has been

used progressively through different aspects bringing people together.

• For example;• Gaming• Cellular data with your smartphones• Internet/Web Surfing• Social Networking sites e.g. Twitter and Youtube

16

Page 17: Telecommunications

17

Examples - Youtube• The creation of Youtube was in 2006 uploading the first video called ‘My visit to

the Zoo’ and since then progressing world wide where anyone can upload and create their own footage and ‘channels’. Since then, worldwide known artists such as Justin Beiber have been discovered from this site.

• Moreover, it is becoming a business tool using commercials before the video is shown helping globally publicise the product being sold. It has also created business by accident, with SBTV becoming huge after two young males started recording freestyle rappers with normal handheld camcorders, to now becoming a massive success with the amount of hits they had with popular rap and grime artists such as Dappy from N Dubz being recorded on their channel.

• TV Stations also partner with Youtube by creating their own channels where people can ‘Catch up’ TV, a form of on demand service where you can rewatch a previous episode shown on television to help update the viewer with what was missed from the episode.

17

Page 18: Telecommunications

18

Examples - Gaming• Gaming has become a prominent tool in terms of telecommunication,

using the internet as a massive social networking device over either Xbox Live, Playstation Network, the Wii’s online service or even PC’s online community. You can play games with your friends, chat and even create gaming avatars to recreate your image within the video game world.

• The video games industry has progressed massively, becoming bigger than the film and music industry combined and still attracting audiences from across the globe. Especially with the Call of Duty and Halo video game franchises completely bringing online gaming experiences to a whole new level.

• Downloading HD videos or games on PS3, Xbox 360 and the newly released WiiU are becoming the next big thing, with actual physical copies of games and DVD’s/Blu Ray’s selling less and less meaning that digital downloads may be the future of the gaming market and gaming shop giants such as Game (UK) and GameStop (America) to turn to an alternative.

• It provides the ability to connect with the ‘outside world’

• Features of the internet such as Youtube and Gaming devices allows us to have the opportunity to leave feedback and speak to people you wouldn’t neccessary kno and cooperating with them
