INFORMATION ABOUT BRUNEI DARUSSALAM 1. ABOUT
Brunei Darussalam (Brunei, the Abode of Peace) is a small, prosperous, stable, safe, wholesome
and peaceful oil rich Kingdom located on the northern shores of the Island of Borneo. Largely
covered in luxuriant and pristine tropical rainforests rich in exotic flora and fauna, Brunei is a
paradise for nature lovers and for nature tourism in general.
Because of its small size and excellent road and tourist infrastructure, the best preserved
rainforests in Borneo can be easily and safely discovered in day long trips from the comfort of
international standard hotels ranging from tourist class inns to the regally opulent Empire Hotel &
Country Club, or in overnight trips staying at comfortable lodges or boutique rainforest resorts,
making the enriching experience of nature tourism in the tropics a much more approachable
proposition for those who appreciate comfort and safety.
A cherished cultural heritage, deep-seated Islamic values and the uniqueness of the ancient and
revered Sultanate institution make Brunei a country with a strong identity, where tolerance is a
cultural norm and hospitality is common courtesy.
With plenty of greenery, fresh and invigorating pollution free air, a healthy environment free of
tropical diseases, no traffic jams and one of the lowest crime rates in the world, Brunei is a
welcoming and rejuvenating experience.
Whether it is enjoying the bountiful nature, admiring the opulence of Brunei’s ancient monarchy,
discovering the fascinating Water Village – one of the largest in the world – and the thriving culture
and traditions of the Malay people; or simply enjoying a world class round of golf, diving in coral
rich waters, being pampered in luxury at the spa or having fun with the family in our safe and
wholesome environment, Brunei will reveal itself as a true Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures.
2. ISLAMIC ETIQUETTE
Although Islam is the state religion of Brunei Darussalam, it is also a country that prides itself on
the diversity of its people – including their religions.
Visitors are welcome in the mosques, however, proper attire is required; women are required to
cover their head, shoulders, and knees.
Some mosques will provide simple robes and shawls to meet these standards. Shoes are to be
removed before entering. Mosques are usually closed on Thursday and Friday, and during prayer
times.

locals, landmarks or government buildings (especially inside such as museums or mosques).
All banks, businesses, offices, places of interest, retail, food and beverage outlets are closed
between 12 noon and 2pm on Fridays to observe the Friday prayer time for Muslims.
If you need to gesture or point in Brunei, you should point with the thumb of your right hand instead
of your index finger.
It is also customary in Brunei to lightly touch hands and bring your hand to your chest while
shaking hands. Many Muslim women do not shake hands with men due to religious reasons so
please do not be alarmed by this.
Smoking is prohibited in both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned areas in Brunei
Darussalam. Smoking is banned in specific places including government buildings, hospitals,
recreational and educational centres, public transport and restaurants. Offenders could be fined.
3. CLIMATE
Located close to the equator, Brunei has a MODERATE tropical/equatorial climate throughout the

temperature is around 23.8 degrees Celsius.

appliances that does not accept 240 Volts at 50 Hertz, a voltage
converter will be required. Electrical sockets (outlets) in Brunei
Darussalam are the "Type G" British BS-1363 type as shown in the
