Initial Observations.

• Streamline style of the structures.

• Combination of curves and angles.

• Minimal colour and modernist style.

• Structure design to fit existing environment.

• Structures work with existing terrain.

Initial Concept.

• Not many visitors knew about the Tecton structures.

• The locations of the structures were unknown.

• We want to create recognition and preserve history.

Experimenting with form.

We dissected individual Tecton structures and chose the most recogniseble shapes to create a new Tecton sculpture.

The sculpture would work as an interactive space to display work and guide visitors to the different Tectons around the zoo.

Our idea as 3D shapes. After seeing how the Tecton shapes looked as 3D sculptural pieces we

decided to move forward by placing them in composition.

Initial design.

For the structure to be interactive it would be too large for our budget.

The structure would struggle to display work or protect work from weather conditions as it is open air.

• Guide people through the zoo

• Display work

• Play tribute to the forms of the original structures

Flaws with initial design.

We still want our design to-

Relook at form.

7M TOTAL LENGTHCAN BE MADE SMALLER IF NECESSARY.

Page 13: TECTON Collaborartive Group 8. Emma Najjar. Nicola Blundell. Chrissie Hewitt. Phil Pell. Jalal Azadi.

1) the cheapest is by creating a hollow structure (like fake rocks & garden gnomes etc.) you could use mesh framework for it

2) breeze blocks (lightweight blocks) & add in morter – sand, cement & plasteriser (render)

3) Solid shape to build around – wooden framework, mesh & render

Location- On the flat terrain straight in front of the entrance. This would be ideal because the purpose of our sculpture is to lead visitors around the zoo.

Colour and material- Plain concrete made to resemble and play tribute to the original structures.

Page 15: TECTON Collaborartive Group 8. Emma Najjar. Nicola Blundell. Chrissie Hewitt. Phil Pell. Jalal Azadi.

• We need 20 m3 off concrete for our structure. (1 X M3 of concrete cost us about £230-£300.)

• If we make our structure in concrete we need around £6000.

• We probably can finish it around £5000 and it is depend on the type of concrete we use as each type of concrete cost different prices.
