TEACHER TRAINING INITIATIVE

ABOUT US

PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS

In summer 2014, Talk Talk English contracted with the Sukhbaatar Education District to train 67 English language teachers from a number of schools in the Sukhbaatar District.

Talk Talk English is a pioneering English language centre located in the heart of Ulaanbaatar, close to the National University of Mongolia. Over the last 7 years we have built an excellent reputation based on our professional teaching, small classes, effective learning materials and a high level of student-teacher interaction.

We teach high school and university students, career professionals and high profile individuals. We regularly teach groups from Mongolia’s leading corporations and we also train employees in the State sector.

Teachers from the following schools participated in our training programmes:

Schools number 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 11, 16, 26, 29, 58, 71, 116. The Joint Indian Mongolian School,Russian School Nr.3, The Music and Dance School.

TRAINING NEEDS ANALYSIS

TRAINERS

TEACHING STRATEGIES

Prior to the training, the teachers undertook a written examination and a verbal assessment. The results were reviewed and a teaching programme, based on training needs, was developed for the teachers.

The teachers were divided into three training groups, based on their training needs.

Training was carried out over a three week period by:

• Patrick Kennedy (BA Hons, TESOL, DELTA), Education Director • Hutch Butler (BA, TEFL), Training Director • Scott Muehlbauer (BA, TEFL), Senior Teacher and High School Teacher Trainer

Teachers were instructed on different approaches to teaching English language skills and systems:

• Reading • Writing • Speaking • Listening • Grammar • Vocabulary

Different approaches and methods were explored and compared and contrasted. For example: Task-Based Learning was compared with the Direct Method.

CURRICULUM SPECIFICS

EXAMINATION

During the programme we taught:

• Advanced grammar • The use of phonemic script and different ways to teach pronunciation • Different correction techniques for both speaking and writing • Lesson planning and how to create a lesson based around a text, a concept or an idea. • How to teach vocabulary using context, co-text, translation and other lexical approaches to teaching

We looked at the origins of the English language and its consequent rise to prominence as a world language.

We reviewed the structure of English at sentence level and the types of sentences that occur in English (e.g. Subject Verb Object; Subject Verb Complement, etc.)

We examined English at the word level in the Morphology module, which showed how to deconstruct words to their basic components - morphemes.

At the end of each training course teachers took an examination and were awarded certificates.

SUMMARY

EXAMINATION

We received very positive feedback from the teachers who attended the course.

Our experience during the programme offered us important insights into the training needs of English language teachers from the Sukhbaatar District.

Generally, the teachers made very good progress in a short period of time and we believe there is now an opportunity to develop a highly cost effective continual professional development training programme for English language teachers working in Ulaanbaatar and around Mongolia.

At the end of each training course teachers took an examination and were awarded certificates.
