Bongimusa Sukazi (36) shot and killed his girlfriend Kedibone Sambo (43) and later shot and killed himself with his father’s licensed firearm in Vosloorus recently.According to the police investigation, Sambo had separated from her husband (whose name is known to SAPS), but they were still legally married. Captain Piet Rossouw said it is alleged that Sambo dated Sukazi for about two to three years. “It is alleged that she was dumping Sukazi for a new boyfriend from Pretoria. Sukazi was jealous and the incident resulted in the tragic death,” said Captain Rossouw.

He added that the deceased Sambo had opened a case of assault and domestic violence against the deceased Sukazi. The case was postponed at Vosloorus Court until Tuesday 14 April and has been withdrawn by the state prosecutor because both parties are deceased.Harriet Mthunzi (68), the mother of the deceased Bongimusa Sukazi said, “My son came home in the early hours of the morning and gave me R610 and car keys. He told me that he had done something bad and asked me to look after his child. After few minutes I heard gunshots and he had killed himself with his father’s gun in the

drive-way at home.”She added that she later heard that her son also shot and killed his girlfriend. “He used to fight and quarrel a lot with the girlfriend. I even suggested to him that he had to part ways with his girlfriend as there was no peace in their relationship. I am lost without him as he was supporting us with money to buy food,” said the distraught Mthunzi.Puseletso Moleko, the sister of the deceased Kedibone Sambo said, “My sister left for Carnival City to watch the Joyous Celebration event on Good Friday with her cousins. On her way back within her neighbourhood her car

was blocked by Bongimusa Sukazi’s car. He blasted the window with the gun and shot her on the upper body and forehead and she died in her car.” Moleko claims that her sister and the deceased were no longer together. “Sukazi was her ex-boyfriend and he did not want to accept that the relationship was over. He was jealous and obsessed with her. He also wanted to get married to her without her consent. I don’t know anything about the new boyfriend from Pretoria but l confirm that my sister was still legally married to her husband and they had separated,” said Moleko.

The Ekurhuleni Metro is seeking community comments on the draft of the Integrated budget and Development Plan (IDP).Integrated development planning is a process through which munici-palities prepare a strategic development plan which extends over a fi v e-year period. This then guides and informs all planning, budgetting, management and decision-making processes in the municipality. Residents of Ekurhuleni and various other stakeholders will have an opportunity to comment on the developmental programme of the Metro as contained in the IDP for 2015/16 and the Budget for the next three years. The municipality undertook a consultative process on the review of its Integrated Development Plan with ward councillors and ward committee members in September last year. The inputs received through the consultative process formed the basis of the draft IDP 2015/16 and draft multi-year Budget for 2015/16 - 2017/18 that were tabled at the Council meeting on 29 January 2015 for the purpose of consultation with stakeholders. Before the draft IDP and draft Budget are approved by Council in May 2015, the acceptability of the proposals must be tested with the communities. As from 14 to 22 April, Ekurhuleni will hold IDP and Budget meetings in all its 20 Customer Care Areas at 18:00 pm to discuss the draft documents with communities. Council will brief

stakeholders on the proposed developmental programme and allow communities to comment on the proposals. Proposed new tariffs, the new valuation roll, credit control and

indigent benefi ts as well as budget proposals related to capital projects across the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality are expected to dominate

discussions at the Metro’s Draft Integrated Development and Planning (IDP) and Budget public consultative meetings to be held over the next two weeks. This year, these IDP and Budget meetings will also be combined with the Mayoral Izimbizo to give progress reports on service delivery issues. Over and above these meetings, stakeholders can, from now until April 30, access the draft IDP and draft Budget documents which are open for comment. These can be viewed electronically at any time on www.ekurhuleni.gov.za; or at public libraries, pay points and Customer Care Centres during offi ce hours. Comments can be fi lled in and dropped into “Budget Tips” boxes at the above-mentioned offi ces or emailed to [email protected]. Public enquiries can also be made by contacting the Metro’s Strategy Planning and Support offi ce on 011 999 6760/1/2/3.

Have your say on IDP Pre-winter safety campaign launched

22 April 2015 - Vosloorus18:00 PM - Nguni HallWard 44, 45, 46, 47, 64, 95

As from 14 to 22 April, Ekurhuleni will hold IDP and Budget meetings in all its 20 Customer Care Areas at 18:00 pm to discuss the draft documents with communities.

Instead of putting out a fire, emergency services set a shack on fire during the launch of the Ekurhuleni Pre-Winter Fire Safety campaign at Gugulethu/Everest informal settlement in Springs. The annual fire safety awareness campaign, themed “Call us in time, We arrive on time,” will be held to re-educate residents about fire safety ahead of the approaching winter season when paraffin stoves, liquefied petroleum gas heaters and braziers (imbawula) will be used to keep warm. Tumelo Lephosa, a resident from Angelo informal settlement who is a member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), said the demonstration involving a burning shack made the message more tangible for residents who attended the launch. “After seeing us in action today, the community understands the role we play and how they can assist us in extinguishing such fires using the bucket brigade system instead of standing in a crowd and watching someone’s home burn to ashes,” he said. The 649 CERT members who were present at the launch have been deployed to be the

first in line to respond to fire

incidents in all 119 informal settlements within the City of Ekurhuleni, while emergency response officials make their way to a scene. “The number of shack fire fatalities and injuries in Ekurhuleni has dropped since 2008. That is a clear indication that the pre-winter fire safety campaigns and the efforts of the Community Emergency Response Teams go a long way in saving lives,” said Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Safety Clr Vivian Chauke.

In closing, the MMC urged the CERT members who have been trained in first aid, basic fire fighting, bucket fire brigading, disaster reduction and public education, to

impart their knowledge to other community members so that everyone will be able to help put out the flames in the event of a fire. The fire safety awareness campaign will run until the end of August, when the Ekurhuleni Emergency and Disaster Management Services team will visit informal settlements across the city and educate them on precautions to take to avoid fires and what to do in the event of a fire breaking out.

Rise in Africa pantsula dance group won Kathorus’s Got Talent competition and walked away with R10 000 from the final event, which was held at Vosloorus Crossing Mall. The second prize of R2,500 was won by another pantsula group, Illumination Great Dancers. Rise in Africa dance group consists of two members: Mlungisi Mchunu (20) and Malifetsane Thaba (22). Mchunu is a renowned pantsula dancer who won the Jika Majika dance competition television show aired on SABC 1 twice in 2010 and in early January this year.Speaking to tame TIMES, Mlungisi Mchunu said, “We are delighted that we won and we have learned that patience pays in the end. We have lost all our group members and only

two of us are left because there was no income coming in.” He said they will use the money to register their group as a non-profit organisation, to buy a camera and dancing costumes. “I encourage young people who are passionate about dancing to participate in the local dancing competitions to nurture their talents,” said Mchunu.Azona Sobantu, Director of Illumination Great Dancers (IGD), said it was the first time their group won a Kathorus dance competition and they would use the money to buy dance costumes. “ We are happy and privileged in that our work is appreciated by the community. We also encourage other young stars to continue showcasing their talents,” said Sobantu. Paul Radebe, organiser of Kathorus’s Got Talent competition, said, “We achieved more than our expectations, the public who supported the competition gained and the talent was

identified. Dj Clock and Lady Du will also be using some of the participants in their music videos. It was a good and successful competition and the next edition will be held next year.”The Kathorus’s Got Talent competition was sponsored by Vosloorus Crossing Mall in partnership with Kasie FM and was held in an open space at Vosloorus Crossing Mall.

Nine representatives of Vosloorus Police Station Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC) and Youth Crime Prevention Desk have been equipped with knowledge on combatting drugs at the School of Scientology in Kensington, Johannesburg. They attended a Scientology Volunteer Minister Answers to Drugs course from 20 February to 19 March, completing six modules and being awarded with a trophy and certificates. Ntebo Radebe, Victim Empowerment Coordinator at Vosloorus Police Station,

said they were taught how addicts can kick drugs without rehab. “They taught us purification and personal programmes and skills to give to drugs addicts. We also learned the survival mechanism of making a person aware of the life they are living at the moment,” said Radebe. She said they will engage with different stakeholders - mostly youth - who are using drugs and pass on the information they have learned. “The most important skill is self-awareness; we will be encouraging people to know their capabilities and be able to solve their own problems. We will also urge youth to go to school and be involved in community initiatives to keep them away from negative things such as indulging in drugs,” said Radebe.Captain Piet Rossouw, spokesperson of Vosloorus Police Station said, “With the knowledge gained from the training, VEC and Youth Crime Prevention Desk members are going to assist the community of Vosloorus in fighting drugs as it is problematic and leading to many

crimes that are committed.”

The illegal loan shark industry that is mushrooming in our townships contributes significantly to the mysterious deaths that so often take p l a c e in hidden corners. It was these strange and tragic occurrences that inspired Black Dog Records owner John Mthembu to write and produce a short film titled “Crime Doesn’t Pay.”According to Mthembu, the short film is about one hour long and was shot at Eden Park Township in Ekurhuleni. The lead actor is played by Glen Vilakazi, who plays a character called Zakes. “Zakes became an orphan from a young age because his mother could not pay the debt to the local loan shark, who shot her dead. The youngster grew up in a tough environment; crime was the only resort that Zakes could turn to for survival.

Despite the challenges Zakes encountered in life, revenge was of paramount importance to him and he devoted his life to accomplishing his mission,” said Mthembu. All the actors are from Eden Park and they were given an acting workshop by the Black

Dog Records crew before they shot the movie. Mthembu is

optimistic that there is a great deal of untapped talent in

the township that needs to be nurtured. He cited

that township films have been ignored, and

that township film-makers need to co-

operate to achieve success. He said

a considerable amount of money and training should be invested in the township film-making

industry for it to be on a par with its peers. Black Dog Records sell their products from the boot of a car and the money generated is used to pay actors. For more information about the film contact John Mthembu on: 078 735 8732.

The Zonkizizwe based Thembalemihla Youth Club brings light and hope to aspiring dancers from the area; but a lack of resources, ranging from costumes, music system and transportation is still a stumbling block. Due to their shortage of space for practice sessions, a generous neighbour offered them space and musical equipment for rehearsal purposes every weekday afternoon. Nonkulunga Ngcobo, the organisation’s treasurer, said they have a shortage of dance uniforms and equipment, and a lack of transportation for dancers when they perform far from home. “We are often invited to perform at weddings, birthdays and various community events to entertain the guests. In most cases I ended up using my money to transport dancers coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. It puts enormous financial constraints on

us, because our dance instructors are volunteers in the club. Our dancers range from 14 to 16 years in age - both male and female,” said Ngcobo. She cited that their club started five years ago with the aim of unearthing and nurturing local dancing talent. “We want local youth to channel their energy productively. We offer various dance classes ranging from Kofifi, Jive, Ballroom, Traditional, Hip-hop and Sbujwa dance. We also have musical choir, netball team and gumboots dance groups,” explained Ngcobo.Zonkizizwe is one of the most impoverished and underdeveloped townships, but Ngcobo and her colleagues are determined that the youth will not be depressed by their circumstances.People willing to sponsor the organisation should contact Nonkululeko Ngcobo on: 073 879 5614.

Thokoza local based Black Dog Records Company has recently released their latest short film called “My Sister’s Wife” which is raising awareness of the acceptance and denial olesbians in families.Speaking to tame TIMES the movie p r o d u c e r John Mthembu said the film is about 45 minutes long. “It is about the conservative father of a lesbian woman called Sazi who does not accept that his daughter is a lesbian. The family is split between the supportive mother and the conservative father who did not accept the wedding of his daughter,” said Mthembu. The brother of Sazi is originally from the rural parts of Kwa-Zulu Natal and is amazed at the fact that his sister has become a lesbian after she relocated to Thokoza. This conservative man is finally seduced by Sazi’s wife and impregnates her, which spoils the relationship between the siblings.

The message this movie is sending out to the public is that people should not discriminate against gays and lesbians. “We should start a c c e p t i n g people for

who they are. People are independent and we should not expect that they would live the way the society expects them to,” said Mthembu. The film was shot in Thokoza and the bulk of the actors that featured in the movie are from Ekurhuleni. Black Dog Records sells their short films from the boot of a car and the money generated is split within the acting crew as part of their payment. Mthembu urges local business people to start investing in the local film industry. For more information contact John Mthembu on: 078 735 8732.

NOTE FROM THE

April is a significant month, not only for the residents of Ekurhuleni (as it is Chris Hani Month) but for the nation as well, as it is also Freedom Month.Last week we celebrated the 22nd commemoration of the death of Chris Hani and Ekurhuleni residents were delighted that their own hero’s grave was declared a national heritage site by President Jacob Zuma at Thomas Nkobi Memorial Park in Boksburg. The acknowledgement of hero’s graves, such as the one of Chris Hani, is important, as he contributed to the democracy that we are enjoying today. On 27 April we will also be celebrating Freedom Day and people will be reminded what is meant by freedom and what contributed to their freedom. There are many people who abuse their freedom or take it for granted, while others treasure it. It is very important to understand our freedom and appreciate those who played a significant role in making sure that we enjoy its fruits today. This fortnight we have interesting news about the pantsula dancers who won Kathorus’s Got Talent, Ekurhuleni residents are invited to voice their opinions on Integrated Development and Planning (IDP) and there are details of crime stories around Kathorus. We are also giving our readers an opportunity to send their views, opinion pieces and comments on issues happening around their neighbourhood. These contributions will be published in the newspaper. To send your comments, email: [email protected]. Cheers for now and enjoy reading your favourite Kasie newspaper.

Anna Ndlela: “Easter to me means peace and hope.”

On Easter Sunday, tame TIMES was at Reverend Kenneth Meshoe’s Hope of Glory Tabernacle in Roets Drive, Vosloorus and asked these members the question: “What does Easter mean to you?”

Thabo Dhlamini: “Jesus died for us for our sins and He rose again so we can have eternal life. The Bible says without Him there is no life. He is the beginning and the end. He shows us His life and His compassion.”

Nelisiwe Sibiya: “It means the journey of Christ from His suffering to His resurrection.”

Lizzy Mofokeng: “Cancelling Christmas a n d Good Friday [as public holidays] is not the right thing - because Jesus was born at Christmas and died at Easter for us all, and rose again. His Blood was shed for everybody – for the world, for those who love Him and for those who

don’t. Good Friday and Christmas must not be cancelled. His body is not in the grave.”

Patrick Malaza: “Easter means the resurrection of Christ. He was above all the only person who rose from the dead for us all.”

What does Easter mean to you?

Joyous Celebration delivered a five-star performance at Carnival City.

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) opened its doors for all parents who wish to register their children for admission into Gauteng public schools for the 2016 academic year on 13 April.Parents can go to a school closest to where they reside or work to pick up application forms. These application forms should be returned to the school between 21 April and 26 May 2015. The demand for space in public schools in Gauteng increases every year. The 2015 academic year had almost 30 000 late applications, which is double the number usually received during this period. This prompted the department to provide additional Ordinary Alternative Construction Technology (ACT) classrooms in schools where there was high demand. It is therefore critical for parents to register their children during this period to avoid the challenges that come with late registration in January.

Applying late outside of the stipulated period reduces the chances of parents getting the school of their choice where they meet the criteria. This also means that learners will be placed at a school where there is space available, which might not be close to where their parents work or reside. The department would like to remind parents that admission of learners is on a first-come, first-served basis. Although the department has a constitutional obligation to place every learner in a school, application is not necessarily a confirmation of admission. Therefore, a number of factors are considered before placement is achieved. HOW TO REPORT

If someone is missing, the matter has to be reported to the police as soon as people notice that the person is missing. They should not wait for 24 hours to report a missing person at a police station.

Reporting of a missing personWhen a person goes missing, it is of the utmost importance for the SAPS to fulfi l their mandate to serve and protect the citizens of South Africa. The police will investigate the missing person’s case immediately. People can assist the SAPS when reporting a missing person by following these steps:o THERE IS NO WAITING PERIOD TO REPORT A MISSING PERSON! Report a missing person at your nearest police station immediately.o Produce a recent photograph of the missing person, if possible.o Give a complete description of the missing person’s last whereabouts, the clothes that they were wearing, as well as any information that can assist the investigating offi cer.o Complete and sign a SAPS 55(A) form. This form safeguards the SAPS from hoax reports and indemnifi es the SAPS to distribute the photograph and information of the missing person.o Obtain the investigating offi cer’s contact details, and send any additional information that might become available.o If a missing person is found or returns voluntarily, inform the investigating offi cer immediately. A SAPS 92 form must be completed to inform the Bureau of Missing Persons that the missing person’s report can be removed from the circulation system.People are urged to be vigilant and work collectively to keep families together and safe.Contact details for the national and regional offi ces of the Bureau of Missing Persons:

People seem to think that the 10111 police emergency number is a general public inquiry service hotline. They think that it will be easy for SAPS to fi nd a long lost lover or estranged family member by making a false report of a missing person.According to Captain Piet Rossouw, Communication Offi cer of Vosloorus Police Station, however, “It puts a tremendous workload and cost on the police to attend to hoax calls and reports. The police appeal to the community to refrain from doing hoaxes as they will be liable to prosecution when caught.”He said in the police’s 2013/14 report tabled in Parliament, which covers the period from April 2013 to the end of March 2014, just over two-thirds of the 7 648 975 calls to 10111 were hoaxes, nuisance and abusive calls or enquiries about personal or service delivery matters. Rossouw said only about 32.1 percent (2 456 187) were police-related.Although the overall number of 10111 calls declined by almost one-and-a-half million from 9 122 688, the percentage of police-related calls increased from 29 percent in 2012/13.Rossouw says there are 22 10111 call centres countrywide connecting 475 police stations to the emergency response system and there are 1 137 police stations. To communicate directly with the people and their own employees, the police record an average of 200 Tweets a month, do 1 671 public education and awareness campaigns, and make 34 episodes of the When Duty Calls television series.

Palm Ridge High Court sentenced two assassins to life sentences after they were

found guilty of a murder that was committed in Voslooorus Hostel last year. According to Vosloorus Warrant Officer Phofene Alfred Mbede, relatives Sakhile, Sinuses and Nkosinathi Buthelezi were walking to Vosloorus Hostel to buy food. Said Mbede, “The three well known suspects Mthokoziseni Maphisa (29), Bongani Wiseman Mthanga Ndima (28) and their accomplice (who is known by the police) shot Nkosinathi Buthelezi and died on the scene. The two other brothers escaped. And the motive of the killing is not known by the police.” On 9 June last year, Ndima, one of the suspects, was finally arrested in Hillbrow after being followed by the police investigation team. Mbede said he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and police conducted ballistic testing which linked the gun to a murder case in Vosloorus Hostel. The second suspect was also arrested for the same murder case and they both appeared in Palm Ridge High Court from 18 February to 25 March.“Ndima was sentenced to 15 years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and a further three years for possession of ammunition. The suspect was further sentenced to life in prison for murder. Maphisa was sentenced to life in prison for murder. Police investigations further linked Maphisa with several murder cases. The suspect is expected to appear before the magistrate. The third suspect, who is known to the police, is still at large,” explained Mbede. Vosloorus spokesperson Captain Piet Rossouw warned that people who might be responsible for the hiring of the two killers would also be charged. He warned criminals that crime does not pay.

In an attempt to fight drug abuse, Kathorus Local Drug Action Committee hosted Sports Against Substance Abuse Soccer and Netball tournament at Vosloorus Extension 28 Sports Grounds recently. The tournament was aimed at discouraging youngsters from indulging in drugs, and four soccer teams and two netball teams battled for the ultimate crown. Speaking to tame TIMES, the event organiser Aaron Mashaba said school soccer teams that took part in the event were Thabang Primary School and Kusasalethu Primary School. The other two local soccer teams that were competing were Ma 53 Football Club and Majananda Football Club. In the first semi-final (Kusasalethu versus Amajanada FC), the former lost 2-1. In the

second semi-final (Thabang Primary School versus Ma53 Stars) the latter won 1-0. In the final soccer match between Ma53 Stars Football Club and Majanada Football Club, the former won 1-0. The netball finals match was between Ma18 Stars Netball Team and Themba Community Organisation Netball Team. The final score was 22-2 in favour of Ma18 Stars. Both champions - Ma 53 Stars FC and Ma 18 Netball Team - were given certificates of appreciation by the officials of KLDAC. Moses Gama, one of the event organisers, said they were holding the event for the first time and aimed to hold it annually. “The objective is to encourage youth mass participation in sports where they would be able to discover their talents,” concluded Gama.

Amakhosi on track to li league trophy

Kaizer Chiefs Football Club finally put their foot on the accelerator in their bid to lift the ABSA Premier Soccer League trophy when they walloped Amatuks 1-0 in Tshwane at Tuks Stadium.Amakhosi veteran midfielder Simphiwe “Shaba” Tshabalala scored a brilliant free kick goal which secured a win for the visiting team. Chiefs’ great performance placed a 13-point gap between them and the second- placed Mamelodi Sundowns. Amakhosi are focussing on the league to redeem their pride as they are already out of the Africa Champions League and Nedbank Cup. Winning the league is their only ticket for them to return to play again in Africa. Amakhosi’s previous horrible experience of leaving the league in the hands of the Brazilians - after being on the summit of the league for the greater part of the season before they were unseated by the Brazilians - remained a bad experience which left bitter memories for most Amakhosi players and faithful supporters. This time around, Amakhosi’s technical team drummed it into the player’s ears and minds

that they must focus until their last game of the league. BIDVest Wits surprised everyone when they walloped the third-placed Orlando Pirates 2-0 in a game that was played at BIDVest Stadium in Johannesburg. Calvin Kadi was a star performer on the day, when he netted a brace for the Clever Boys. Meanwhile, as the ABSA Premier Soccer League is fast reaching its final stages, tame TIMES reveals names of some of the five top-performing players that set the league alight this current season. Polokwane City striker Puleng Tlolae has netted 10 goals in his debut season in the PSL. Thulani Hlatswayo has become a mainstay of BIDVest and Bafana defence; and Orlando Pirates winger Thabo Rakhale’s dribbling skills cannot be left unnoticed as he continues to mesmerise opposition teams with ease. The Brazilians midfield maestro Teko Modise has reclaimed his dominance in the heart of the Brazilian team; and Free State Stars free- scoring striker Moeketsi Sekola has been banging in goals for the Free State team.

Kaizer Chiefs objective of winning the

league is six points away

after they won their last league

game.
