Hard work paid off for the learners at Thabo Ntsako Secondary School who went the extra mile to pass Matric, while learners who were playing, protesting or fighting with their teachers failed.The Thokoza based school achieved a 66% pass rate – a slight drop of 3% compared to the previous year when they achieved 69%. In 2014 the school obtained 16 bachelor passes, 47 diploma passes and 23 higher certificates. A total of 137 learners registered for the examination, of whom eight did not write, 86 passed, 43 failed and 38 qualified for supplementary examinations.Tshepo Msomi was the top student at the school with a 72% aggregate and a distinction in Mathematics Literacy.Deputy Principal of Thabo Ntsako Secondary School December Tshabalala said, “Lack of commitment from some learners led to their failure. We fought with them a lot, as some were not even disciplined. If they had listened to us, they would have done much better.” He highlighted the fact that the Curriculum and Assessment Policy (CAPS) was difficult and a challenge to learners. The progression of learners was also a setback in the school’s attempt to reach the district’s target Matric pass rate percentage of 80%.Tshabalala said the school’s plans for this year are to organize more extra lessons and to group the learners according to their performance so as to meet their needs better. He added that they will also motivate the learners to work hard.
Thokoza based Buhlebuzile Secondary School has attributed its poor Matric results in 2014 to absenteeism, progression and CAPS. Speaking to tame TIMES, Deputy Principal Mabato Mbongo said they obtained a 63,4 percent Matric pass rate. “Most of the learners who failed Grade 11 were progressed to Grade 12 and they were not well prepared for the Grade 12 challenge,’ explained Mbongo. She vowed that the school would come up with an intervention strategy for progressed learners, which will include afternoon classes, and give extra support to learners in general. Mbongo said their target for 2015 is 80 percent.“We obtained 22 bachelor passes, 48 diploma passes and 50 higher certifi cates. 120 learners from our school passed and a total of 189 learners wrote the examination. Our advice to learners is that they should learn to change their attitude and work hard. We have dedicated educators who want to improve the situation,” said Mbongo. The school’s top 2014 Matric is Nqobile Ngidi, who obtained fi ve distinctions in Xhosa, Mathematics, Life Orientation, Life Science and Physical Science. Nqobile’s goal is to study medicine so that he can use his profession to benefi t society. He was raised by a single parent in an RDP house in Phola Park.

Despite the fact that the Curriculum and Assessment Policy (CAPS) and progression were stumbling blocks for most schools trying to obtain higher pass percentages, some learners managed to pull out all the stops and excel in their examinations - like Siviwe Tshamanda from Tiisetsong Secondary School who obtained five distinctions.Tshamanda was the top learner at his school, with distinctions in Physical Science, Mathematics (pure), Life Science, Agricultural Science and Life Orientation. He will be studying mechanical engineering at Wits University. “I am happy that l passed maths and physics because they are my favourite subjects,” said Tshamanda. The school obtained a 71,06% Matric pass rate last year, after achieving an 80% pass rate in 2013. They had 61 bachelor passes, 52 diploma passes and 27 higher certificates. A total of 201 learners wrote the examinations and 140 passed.Deputy principal Mr Ngema said they were challenged because it was the first time learners wrote CAPS and the progression policy was applied in Grade 12. “Though we dropped in our pass rate, we performed better than we expected. We checked the performance of the learners in the first and second term last year and their pass rate was 61%. We were thrilled that we surpassed the term percentages and obtained 71, 06 % in the Matric results,” said Ngema.He added that they have strategies in place to make sure that they raise the school pass rate. These include grouping the learners that have been progressed together and encouraging them to compete among themselves.

The 2014 Matric results in Landulwazi Comprehensive School in Thokoza took a nosedive from the 73 percent they obtained in 2013 to 41 percent last year. This is a drop of 32 percent, which raises great concerns about the culture of learning and teaching at the school.This sorry state of affairs prompted the tame TIMES newspaper team to visit the school. Deputy Principal of the school John Matlakala said, “The introduction of
the Curriculum Assessment Policy (CAPS) contributed significantly to poor Matric results in 2014. Results dropped both nationally and provincially. I’m optimistic that the results will improve in the near future.”Landulwazi Comprehensive School 2014 Matric learners obtained 14 Bachelor passes, 35 Diploma passes and 32 National Higher Certificates. There were 205 Matric learners registered for the examination, of whom 81 learners passed and 124 did not. One of the top performing learners at Landulwazi Comprehensive School is brilliant Khumari Tsitso, who obtained two distinctions in Mathematics and Physical Science.

A 34-year-old male suspect was shot and injured during a shoot-out between his accomplice and Johannesburg Metro Police officers in Phola Park in Thokoza.The injured suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and is now receiving medical attention. Constable Patrick Mashiane, Thokoza Police Station spokesperson, reported that it was alleged that five suspects were driving a silver Volvo with false number-plates. He said Johannesburg Metro Police Officers (JMPD) tried to stop them but they refused to be pulled over. “The suspects drove to Thokoza at high speed and the police followed them and called for backup. When the suspects saw that the police were close by, they climbed
out of the car and ran away on foot. The police continued with the chase and the suspects started to shoot in the direction of the police,” said Mashiane.“Police retaliated and they arrested suspect - who was also in possession of an unlicensed firearm - was shot and wounded. The other four suspects managed to escape with two firearms,” concluded Mashiane.A silver Volvo with fake number-plates and one unlicensed firearm were recovered at the scene and a case of possession of an unlicensed firearm was opened. The case is still under investigation and police are looking for the four suspects, who are at large. The suspect will appear at Palm Ridge Court as soon as he recovers.

Foreign coaches dominate Afcon CupThe 2015 Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Equatorial Guinea on Saturday is dominated by foreign coaches.This situation has raised concerns about the direction that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is taking in developing football and local coaches on the continent. While the beautiful game’s pundits are continuing to preach about the African football renaissance or the development of footballers, most of the CAF affiliate associations snub domestic coaches and prefer to employ foreign coaches to coach their respective senior national teams. In the Equatorial Guinea Afcon 2015 there will only be three African born coaches leading national soccer teams. They include: the Democratic Republic of Congo team, which will be led by Florent Lebenge who was born in Kinshasa DRC; the Zambian national team, which is coached by Zambian born Honour Janza and the South African team, which is led by the industrious Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba. The other 13 countries taking part in the Afcon 2015 tournament will be led by foreign coaches. So, it is ironic that CAF has the ambition to see an African team lift the World Cup trophy in the near future. That seems to be a far-fetched dream, as most of the continent’s football governing associations have little faith in their own home-grown coaches. Africa is optimistic that the three African born coaches will prove the other countries wrong by winning the AFCON. This would make history and remind CAF and its

Rubbing shoulders with the starsTwo youngsters from the Katlehong Mini Cricket Club, Thuto Letele (8) and Litha Majordina (12), were recently invited by KFC to be flag-bearers during the recent Protea and West Indies cricket match held at BIDVest Wanderers Cricket Stadium in Sandton. According to Katlehong Cricket Club founder Moses Moreku, this invitation is an indication that cricket is alive, well and recognized in Katlehong. “It is for the first time in the history of the club that our boys have been given such a noble opportunity. Our boys had the opportunity of a lifetime to rub shoulders with internationally renowned cricket stars. Parents should give these youngsters enough support to excel in their favourite sport,” said Moreku.
