The Sunday Times reported that claims reveal that Krejcir, controversial Cape Town businessman Mark Lifman and Cape Town underworld figure Jerome Donkey Booysen have ordered hits on each other. They reported that the feud escalated after Krejcir tried to expand his network to Cape Town in 2011. It is now being claimed that Cape Town underworld bosses are set on moving into Gauteng. Following the hit on Sam Issa in October, where 30 shots were fired at him in a drive-by shooting, the Weekend Argus reported the hit on Issa’s life was linked to the murder of a former Sexy Boys gangster and Leon ‘Lyons’ Davids from Cape Town a few days prior to Issa’s hit. It was reported that Issa and Davids allegedly worked for Krejcir. However, Davids was in a witness protection program after allegedly fingering the masterminds behind the murder of Cape Town bouncer boss Cyril Beeka in 2011. Beeka was also killed in a drive-by shooting after leaving the house of Jerome ‘Donkey’ Booysen. “Davids works for Krejcir. Issa worked for both Krejcir and Beeka. There is a link between the Issa and Davids killings,” a source told the Weekend Argus. Forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan has stated that Issa was involved in the supply of drugs to Johannesburg clubs, a claim supported by intelligence sources who spoke to amaBhungane on condition of anonymity. Krejcir broke his silence following the incident last week and denied knowing who is behind these hits on his life. “I really don’t know. I have been trying to think, but I really don’t know,” he added. It’s the silly season people. If you have not realised that, carefully lift your hand above your head and feel for a solid mass because it’s very possible you may be living under a rock. The shop windows are dressed with all things snowy and glittery, fuel prices dropped, people are giving the final lap the last of the reserved energy and, if I’m not mistaken, this past week I received a courteous smile and wave in a situation which would have earned me the one finger salute in June. So evidently the spirit of Christmas, kwanza, the holiday season or whatever you call it, is upon us.Thinking about the December holiday season, from as far back as I like to remember, has always lead my thoughts towards the universal meaning of this time of year. Has too much emphasis been placed on the activity around this time of year? Does the aggressive push towards the advertising of everything condition the mind to forget reason? There are many other related questions, however that is not something I feel I should get into at the moment. Rather, doing something that will benefit someone who cannot do anything for you in return, someone who does not even expect to be shown favour and most importantly who will truly appreciate however little the gesture. I’m a supporter of organisations formed with the intention to serve the needy, however experiences I’ve had during serving on the Department of Community Safety’s Youth-desk, and brief excursions to neighbouring countries, I’ve learnt the value of physically touching a life. I’ve learnt to appreciate even the worst day and most importantly felt the warm sense of inner fulfilment that results from the appreciation the less fortunate in society give in return. This year the idea of convincing people to ‘buy one more’ during Christmas shopping and personally delivering whatever the bought item is to an orphan in a home, a street kid, a gogo who has several hungry mouths to feed, or whoever is at need, came to mind. As conclusion to this week’s short conversation, I question and challenge: Would it be possible for you to take some time off to buy one more and get your hands to touch a life?

Share your experiences and photos with us at [email protected], but most importantly share of yourself this season.

COMMENT OF THE WEEK

Dear Nieto HernandezYour article, Time to man-out, impressed me so much that I just have to respond. I am a mother of two middle-aged sons and married for fifty five years to a wonderful man, and so I consider myself well informed to the plight of men. On the subject of prostate and breast cancer, I would like to see a group of men meeting to just chill out and talk openly about this sort of thing. It’s a big worry that should not be suffered alone and maybe it’s easier to talk when there is an eager listener that can encourage support and understand their point of view. As a woman I would like to say men that can cry and men that face their demons openly are strong men, and I for one think women (wives, girlfriends, friends and family) can and should be supportive and compassionate on such matters. It always helps when there is someone you can confide in that will be sympathetic and not pushy. My recommendation is, start a man-out group, wear a blue ribbon to identify cancer for man-out, a tribe of strong men willing to face whatever, with wisdom and support from like-minded men. Just my point of view, I wish you much success in this endeavour.Kind Regards,Clara Freedman

Raising rhino awareness

Acclaimed conservationist, rhino activist and wildlife veterinarian, Dr William Fowlds, will be speaking at The Exchange, Johannesburg – a business forum at Cornerstone Church Bedfordview on 6 December from 6:00-6:30. Dr Fowlds will be talking about his Christian faith and his passion for nature and how these work together.Dr Fowlds is a well-known and respected veterinarian who is passionate about wildlife conservation

and, in particular, dedicates a huge portion of his time championing the plight of the rhino through various initiatives. One of these initiatives is a partnership with the Investec Rhino Lifeline project, which aims to “raise awareness of the rhino crisis and to respond through education, rescue and prevention initiatives.”In addition to his conservation initiatives, Fowlds also provides training and educational opportunities for vet students at schools from all

continents, exposing them to the many conservation needs of Southern Africa. He has a stellar reputation with the academic fraternity, eco-tourism organisations and wildlife conservationists. He has also appeared on international television shows on NBC and ITV news.Recently, Dr Fowlds documented a heinous poaching attack in 2012 and the subsequent slow recovery of one rhino at the Kariega game reserve in the Eastern Cape (two of the other rhinos attacked unfortunately died). This has raised a great deal of awareness about poaching and the illegal rhino horn trade. For more information and to book your space by 2 December, go to www.corners tonechurch.co.za/drwilliamfowlds/, e-mail [email protected] or call 011 616 4073. You can keep up to date with Dr Fowlds at his website at williamfowldsdaytoday.blogspot.com, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/william.fowlds or on Twitter (@DrWillFowlds.

A suspect was arrested following an incident that involved the supposed carjacking of a VW Polo in Bedfordview along Boeing Road East.According to the complainant, she stopped at the traffic light and two African males pointed a firearm at her. She got out of the vehicle and the guys drove off with the car.She immediately reported the incident. A police official was perusing dockets in the crime office at Bedfordview SAPS when he came across the hijacking case. On one

statement the complainant said that she was hijacked by two armed African males of her VW, on another statement the same complainant stated that she was not hijacked but gave the car to someone to take over the instalments as she had financial problems. The 32-year-old complainant was then arrested for perjury and has already appeared in court. The case was remanded to a later date for further investigation.

Diligent police officer nabs suspect

Police officer Enoch Motsepe was denied bail by the Germiston Regional Court.Motsepe was arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a Bedfordview man, an event where award winning rapper Khuli Chana was mistakenly shot.Magistrate Pieter du Plessis said Motsepe “fell substantially short of this target” to provide exceptional circumstances why it would be in the interests of justice to grant him bail. The case has been postponed till 13 January for further investigation.Motsepe is accused of kidnapping, extortion and robbery with aggravating circumstances. It is alleged that Motsepe was one of four men who entered the home of Ali Haji, claiming they were police officers. They stole jewellery worth R15 000, a BMW and a cell phone. They then demanded R100 000 from Haji’s family after they kidnapped him. Motsepe was arrested after allegedly collecting the ransom at a Caltex petrol station on the N1 highway in Midrand. The police are still searching for three men in connection with the kidnapping of Haji. Haji was found unharmed in Pretoria after the incident.Police shot and wounded hip hop singer Khuli Chana when he allegedly failed to stop at a roadblock they had set up at the petrol station’s exit in an attempt to catch the kidnappers.

Radovan Krejcir’s business manager has been arrested and charged with fraud involving R10million.Ivan Savov was taken into custody on 14 November and appeared in court at the time of print. The Hawk’s Paul Ramaloko says, “We had a fraud case opened early this year involving R10million taken from one security company. This suspect we arrested was linked to the fraud, which was opened in Kliptown.”The arrest took place after the South African Revenue Service obtained a court order placing all of Krejcir’s assets and those of his and associates under the control of a curator, following the preservation order issued by the high court in Pretoria. The details are contained in an affidavit obtained by the Mail and Guardian newspaper, which was used to motivate an attachment order.According to the affidavit the court granted seizure of control of the assets of 15 other entities linked to Krejcir, including the Money Point pawn business in Bedfordview. The South African Revenue service suspects Radovan Krejcir is using Cross Point, which also trades as Money Point, as front to evade tax.SARS acted in terms of the Tax Administration Act based on the view that Krejcir owes more than R59million in taxes, penalties and interest.

Pupils are nearing the end of yet another school year and are finishing off their year before a well-deserved long school holiday. At the end of the school term, your child will return home from school with their bag brimming with stationery, to place next to their kit bag overflowing with sports clothes and equipment, popped down next to the three lunchboxes that you have bought over the course of the school year. Your child will only be too happy to take off his/her school shoes, waiting until the new school year for a new pair. Sound familiar? With the great need for children to have basic school supplies The Collection Hub wants to change the lives of 5000 underprivileged learners by providing them with school shoes and basic school items.Organiser of the initiative, Karen Landi encourages children and their parents that “if you aren’t going to take it forward, pay it

forward.” “Let’s see if we can assist 5000 underprivileged school children so that they can start the 2014 School Year with a pair of school shoes, a pencil case and a school bag. I believe that if we all put in a little effort, we will achieve this,” Landi adds. The Collection Hub is a Non-Profit Organisation who markets and runs initiatives. They provide storage space and redistribute items based on a needs specific basis to charities, facilities and families in desperate need. The Collection Hub’s Tanya Dimas and Landi are both wives, mothers, businesswomen and entrepreneurs. Who lead busy lives and yet are both eager to assist wherever they are able to effect change and empower those in need. MoneyContentment: True Wealth

Isn’t it surprising that, despite the evidence, we still all think that it’s money that will make us happy?

a lot of people think that God is anti-happiness and therefore they really just want Him and “His rules” to leave them alone. one can understand the sentiment. But, surprisingly, God actually does want us to be happy. In fact, he wants us to be full of joy, which is even deeper and better than just happiness. The thing is He knows, better than we do, what will actually give us joy. Psalm 16:11 says, “you [God] make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures for evermore.”

It’s been shown countless times how people with lots of money and fame, more often than not, actually live unhappy lives. Isn’t it surprising that, despite the evidence, we still all think that it’s money that will make us happy? The Bible encourages us to find the ‘secret of contentment’ (Philippians 4:11 – 12; 1 Timothy 6:6 – 7) whether we are rich or poor, because neither of these bring joy. That secret is knowing God Himself and being close to Him. That’s what’s on offer if we put our faith in Jesus, which is good news!

Umdali getting it right for 8 years

The umdali Institute, situated in Germiston, has enjoyed 8 years of educating students in the development of practical skills. umdali offers a space for learners to turn their passion into a career, as well as practically utilising their training in the cut-throat job market. The institute, a lifelong dream of Drs Hendrik and Phillicia Bester, opened its doors in 1990 when Dr Bester left the business world to follow a spiritual calling. Umdali, the Zulu word meaning “creator”, aims to create a safe, Christocentric atmosphere for students to develop their skills and live out their God-called destinies. Always loving the arts and believing it comes from God, Drs Hendrik and Phillicia Bester thought of no better way to pay homage to the ultimate artist and creator. The institute offers accredited courses, as well as non-accredited courses in counselling, practical theology, visual and performing arts - as well as a gap year program. The popular Gap year program is Christian-based, where students are trained to handle difficult life

situations, transforming them into mature and whole adults. “Talent takes you to the top but a strong character keeps you there,” says Dr Bester, a strong advocate for the program.Umdali is a partner to the annual International Creative Arts Conference which attracts more than 2000 visitors and 700 delegates each year. In addition to courses, the institute offers workshops throughout the year, offering skills training in arts and crafts, film production, photography and selected practical theology and counselling subjects. Creative development subjects, such as art, dance, vocal training, drama and public speaking, are also available for both junior and high school children. The Umdali Institute, rooted in Christianity, aims to arm students with skills to succeed in the working world as well as create independent and self-actualised alumni concurrently. the andrew’s rowers were on top form at the Gauteng rowing Championships held at roodeplaat Dam recently, claiming the winning trophy for the first time since 2004/5.The rowers were presented with lovely weather, but their efforts to break record were futile against the swirling winds.According to Kirsty McCann, the school’s u/14s are the team to be watched in

the upcoming years. “The team has achieved their best results in 6 years, they have great potential and depth,” McCann added. They fielded four quads in the age group final, with Tahne Badenhorst, Cara Nel, Caitlin Liepsig, Megan Liepsig and Simone Luis (cox) winning gold. There were three doubles who made the A final, winning gold (Liepsig and Nel) and bronze (Alex da Sousa and Rachel Haddow), as well as two scullers in the A final crossing the line in 2nd (Badenhorst) and 3rd (Megan Liepsig). Skye Kampmann and Sigourney Griffin-Ellis, cruised to a gold medal win providing another highlight in the u/15 girls double. Three more St Andrew’s quads in this A final event finished 3rd, 4th and 8th. Rivals, St Mary’s were incredibly strong in the Open A finals, but St Andrew’s were delighted to win the Open Pair A final from St Mary’s. Their best position in the sculls event was Amy Mattushek (silver), Jennifer Cleary (4th), and Rosanne Bentley (5th). The prestigious race of the regatta, the Open Quad event saw St Andrew’s in a nail-biting finish against a determined St Mary’s team. McCann, who won gold in the senior women’s scull’s event said, “We were delighted with the number of crews across the whole club making the A finals and, in many cases, earning medals. Our success in the junior age groups is excellent as it builds a solid foundation for the club’s senior age groups in the future.”

Holy rosary girls and invited guests recently had the opportunity to attend the official opening and ribbon cutting of the Bishop shanahan Hall with gallery and conference facilities. The builders from JT Son Construction, together with an amazing team of engineers and associated building contractors who ensured the project was efficiently run and well controlled; architect and past pupil Nicolette Gammon, who introduced a number of aesthetically-pleasing and functionally innovative features; and Prosound, who supplied and installed a complete audio, AV and lighting, must be acknowledged and thanked for their hard work and determination. The whole project has resulted in a hall that will be a huge asset for the school now and very far into the future. To commemorate the opening, local choirs from Holy Rosary Primary School, St Benedict’s Preparatory School, Assumption Convent Primary School, Holy Rosary High School, Jeppe High School for Boys, Assumption Convent High School, St David’s Marist Inanda School, and Holy Rosary School music pupils performed for the enjoyment of all present.

Assumption Convent bid farewell to MatricsAssumption Convent recently held their Valedictory evening for the Matric Class of 2013. The moving ceremony held at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament also presented the top Grade 12 achievers and were congratulated on their excellence and diligence.

awards: Grade 12 pupils receiving awards at the assumption Convent valedictory evening.

Celebrating Remembrance Dayassumption Convent school held its annual remembrance Day (also known as Poppy Day or armistice Day) on 11 November 2013. This is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries since the end of World War I to remember the members of their armed forces, male and female, who died in the line of duty. On this day, all pause and pray for all those who have died in any war or violence around the world. The red remembrance poppy has become a familiar emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem In Flanders Fields. These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war.

Notes from the Wild

Following the incredible success of his first album Chandeliers, Ross Jack has officially launched his new album Notes from the Wild.Chandeliers kick-started Ross’s career with the debut hit Seven 45. Continuing on his winning streak Ross scored a 5FM and Goodhope FM #1 with the first single off Notes, TV’s in the Swimming Pool. With the follow up single Home Safe, featuring rising German-based star Kat Vinter, already off to an awesome start, Ross Jack is set to score a

hat-trick of hits.A chance encounter with hip hop legend HHP a few years ago lead Ross Jack to begin his career as a producer. Since that decisive day, Ross Jack has become a sought after producer, having produced for the likes of HHP, Chianosky, Toya Delazy and Zeus. With his wealth of accomplishments and experience it was inevitable that Ross Jack would one day step out as a performer in his own right, releasing Chandeliers, in October 2012.Notes from the Wild is no different as it includes a long list of South Africa’s best artists in the music industry, including Riot, Chianosky, Zues and Adam Howard on Brass.Notes from the Wild also presented Ross with the opportunity to go over to the UK to work with the talented Pete “Boxsta” Martin (Sugababes / Jesse J).“Working with Pete was one of the greatest musical experiences I’ve ever had. ”Although I did a bit of everything on the album and really stretched myself, it was also nice to do some co-producing and collaborating when it came to composition and production,” says Ross Jack of the production process on the album.

You’ve got it kid

At the mature age of 67, Glenvista resident Jenny Peters launched her first album, My Dad’s Kinda Music. The 16 song disc is a tribute to her late father Solly Germanus. “He always wanted me to do this. When I told him that I was going to a recording studio, he replied ‘that is the best news I have ever heard’,” Peters said.tame TIMES met up with the Marists Brother music teacher. One can see Peters was very

fond of her father by the way she retells stories about him. “My dad loved music and was a great entertainer himself. He was a great influence in my career,” Peters recalled. She will forever hear the resounding phrase “You’ve got it kid!”Even though Germanus wasn’t alive to see the CD launch of his daughter, he is sure to be smiling down from heaven.Peters started playing piano at the age of 5 and had five teachers who were all sourced by her father. She played for dancing schools and entered many talent competitions. The cover of her album is a picture taken in 1963 at a talent competition at the Adelphie Bioscope in Rosettenville. When asked how she feels about the CD launch, Peters said she feels she has really achieved something great. She adds that she has had a good response and report from people who have bought the CD. “One of my friends said it is the most uplifting music ever.” tame TIMES has to agree, it is an astounding compilation.Granada and Five Finger Boogie are the two songs that Peters enjoys playing the most, as these were two of her father’s favourite songs. If you are looking for a Christmas gift for a family member or friend, My Dad’s Kinda Music will be a great choice. If you would like to purchase a CD, contact Jenny on 083 311 6372.

Sodastream: the gift that keeps on giving

Just under 6,4m tonnes of household waste is generated in South Africa and disposed of in landfills annually. Households generate 42% of this waste: 21% packaging and paper; 5% food; 6% greens and 10% other. This waste generation increases over the summer holidays providing enough reason to consider gifts that give more as we prepare to celebrate, decorate, relax, give gifts and travel this coming holiday season. Sodastream’s latest Source Element machine ticks all the boxes with a very sexy, eco-friendly DIY soda maker that your family, friends and Mother Nature will love you for. Even though the Source Element, designed by

visionary Yves Behar, is probably the coolest must-have gadget for any modern design-conscious kitchen, the real beauty of this product, and all other Sodastream machines, lies in the fact that they were designed with Mother Nature in mind. The machines are recyclable, the CO2 cylinder refillable and its reusable BPA-free bottle has a 3-year lifespan, keeping you actively green by reducing the amount of plastic bottles you need to purchase and/or dispose of. Plus, your Sodastream Source Element doesn’t need electricity or batteries to keep the fun going, and Mother Nature also receives a gift she can enjoy – a summer holiday with less waste. The Source Element makes the summer holiday picture-perfect, because nothing says recharge at leisure like sparkling cocktails and nothing cools the throat like a fizzy cola, especially when you can have it exactly when you want it, the way you like it – more bubbles, less bubbles, sweeter, less sweet. You need mixers? No problem. With more than 20 delicious Sodastream flavours on tap, it’s at your fingertips. All you need is ordinary tap water and your Sodastream to magically create sparkling or soda water at the press of a button. Sounds like heaven, is heaven!Make Sodastream’s Source Element your first choice of gift this holiday season – knowing that Mother Nature benefits too. Use it in your kitchen, at your home bar, next to the pool, or take it to a picnic or even on holiday. Its fizz is limitless, so are the planet’s thanks.Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/sodastreamsa

Willie Smit has won the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge with a time of two hours, eight minutes and 42 seconds on Sunday morning, followed by teammate Herman Fouché. Teams in the lead group were Bonitas, WCCA, Abantu, NuWater, Europcar, Westvaal, ASG, Mecer, Complete Cyclist, New Horizons, and Swift.Smit said his win comes from plain hard work and many hours of practice. “I’m so thrilled. I’m happy I could pull it off for my sponsor Team Bonitas. And

also for Herman Fouche, who came in second. It was all our team effort. It shows hard work paid off.” The winner in the ladies category was Ashleigh Moolman. Her time has not yet been officially calculated by the time we went to print. The 17th edition of world’s largest road race saw more than 31 000 riders take to the streets of Johannesburg in various categories. Making the most of the early morning conditions, Smit powered through the 94.7 kilometre route ahead of the rest of the pack.

While some riders had spent a total of six hours on the road, Smit and others in the elite category maintained a fast pace, making the race look easy. Many supporters gathered around hanging over the barriers, screaming and shouting for their team members and some just generally for everyone. Well done to every rider, whether small, big, able bodied, disabled, young or old. The vibe was great, attracting people from all walks of life to enjoy a cycle-filled day or to just a family day out.

A tournament as prestigious as the South African Open Championship has often been viewed as a rather austere and serious occasion, but there will be no clampdown on spectator fun when the 103rd edition of this historic championship tees off at Glendower Golf Club next week.Promoters Africa Sports Holdings and Glendower organisers have gone out of their way to ensure this year’s SA Open is a spectator-friendly event to encourage hundreds of fans to come and watch the country’s best golfers and numerous overseas stars challenge for South Africa’s most coveted title from November 21-24 in Bedfordview.Glendower is a classic Parklands course, so instead of installing metal grandstands, spectators will be able to sit on the many mounds around the course, shaded by magnificent trees.“We want to make the tournament really spectator-friendly and encourage people to walk around the course,” Glendower marketing manager Janyne Marais said. “There are beautiful mounds throughout the course where they can sit and they will be right in on the action, so close that they can smell the sweat on the guys!”Kazi Ngqula from Matshezi Productions added that in addition to the golf, the spectators can stay at the golf course when play wraps up and catch some of the country’s hottest acts, including UK number One artist MiCASA and Ibiza regulars Goldfish in concert on Saturday and Sunday evenings.“The 103rd SA Open will incorporate a unique lifestyle aspect,” Ngqula explained. “Our aim is to encourage more people to attend and to introduce more people to the game. But we also want to show people, especially young people and non-golfers, that golf tournaments are not boring and stuffy. “Plenty of parking has been organised in the neighbourhood, the catering will be plentiful and the acts are lined up. We are ready to roll out the red carpet for the nation.”

On the golf course, greenkeeper Mike Burnard has led a tremendous effort to have Glendower Golf Club in tip-top shape for the SA Open, just five weeks after hosting the BMG Classic.“It’s been quite stressful hosting two tournaments in a row, but I’m very happy with how the team has pulled together,” Burnard said.“We started earlier with our preparations this summer and even though the rains were very late, we were able to irrigate a lot. Glendower was greener a lot earlier than most other Johannesburg courses.“The fairways have been reshaped to 18m wide, the tee-boxes and fairways cut to 10mm, the first cut to 30mm and the rough to 100mm. And the greens are being double-cut and rolled to get them to around 12 on the stimp meter.”According to Burnard, players that consort with the rough will have a tough, but not impossible time recovering.“Because the thick rough is only present in patches, the ball will just sit in it rather than go in. The rough is not as difficult as I wanted and the second cut is just bunches of grass. The first cut is probably more consistently thick than the proper rough and the trees are also very important, otherwise the course would be too easy. Accuracy is going to be the key.”With the magnificent SA Open trophy already tucked away in the Glendower offices in anticipation of the pro-am on Tuesday, and the dedicated half-dozen bays for previous champions already allocated, painters are providing some final touches to the 78-year-old club and Burnard is applying the finishing touches to what has always been an exquisite venue, with one eye on the skies above.“In October last year, we braved and survived an intense hailstorm centred on Bedfordview and it will take a natural disaster much worse than that to disrupt the seamless preparations that are right on track at Glendower,” said Marais.

Mapaseka: Grand Prix winner

Mapaseka Makhanya has been around the athletics scene for some time, but 2013 has been a stellar year for her, culminating in her victory in the SPAR Grand Prix. She was nominated for SA Sports Star of the Year, the only female among males but lost out to Itumeleng Khune. However she won the Sportswoman of the Year ahead of Lee-Anne Pace and Mandisa Williams.Makhanya took up road running this year because she wanted to build up her stamina and get used to running longer distances. Although she has never made a secret of her preference for running on the track, she took to road running like a duck to water, and as a result, the bubbly single mother also known as Mapasexy gathered enough Grand Prix points to finish the year well on top of the Grand Prix ladder. She started the year by finishing second in the Cape Town SPAR Women’s Challenge race and third in Port Elizabeth. She took victory in Durban, and had a record-breaking victory in Pretoria. By this stage, she had built up enough points to make it virtually impossible for anyone to overtake her, and although she finished out of the top ten in the final race in Johannesburg in October, the Bonitas (formerly Transnet) runner had done enough to ensure that the keys to the first prize of a new Nissan Micra would be handed over to her.“This has been a great year. I won the Grand Prix and I ran and won my first marathon. Next year I plan on winning another car, and have asked for a leather interior,” Makhanya said. Three-times Grand Prix winner, René Kalmer finished second on the log, with 92 points, 13 behind Makhanya. Kalmer’s sister

Christine was third with 77. René will receive R30 000 and Christine will pocket R17 500.Their Nedbank Gauteng Central teammate Irvette van Zyl, who was unable to run in Johannesburg because of a knee injury, came fourth, with 68 points. The two-times Grand Prix winner will receive R15 000.With five of the top 10 on the SPAR Grand Prix ladder wearing the Nedbank Central Gauteng colours, the club easily won the club competition with 343 points – nearly double those of their nearest rivals, Boxer KZN, who had 177. Transnet was third, with 138 points.

Springboks impress at Murrayfield

The Springboks showed class against the Scots as they battled head to head in the end of year tour in Murrayfield over the weekend.South Africa’s forward dominance once again came to the fore as they hammered the Scots in the tight phases. The starting front row of Guthro Steenkamp, Adriaan Strauss and Frans Malherbe were solid with veteran Bakkies Botha and Flip van der Merwe as pillars of strength in the lock position.

The loose forward trio of Francious Louw, Duane Vermeulen and Willem Alberts, was uncompromising at the tackle situation as Alberts showcased some huge hits making it very difficult for Scotland to get any momentum. This coupled with an almost flawless display by Pat Lambie, in the unfamiliar role of flyhalf, kept the Springboks on the front foot. South Africa’s backline defence was impeccable, led by world class defence organiser Jacques Fourie who ensured that

any front ball that Scotland got had them driven back by a very enthusiastic South African backline. This coupled with the man of the match Willie Le Roux’s performance, South Africa was unstoppable. South Africa is set to take on France on 23 November in Paris. Judging from Sunday’s performance the French should be in for a very hard contest, as the Springboks will hope to come home undefeated in the end of year European tour.

Scotland struggled to make any inroads against a superior Springbok side.

Off ThE PITchTendulkar leaves the Test Arena

It was a very sad day in cricket. On Saturday, arguably the best test batsman of his time retired after playing his 200th Test Match. A spectator interviewed after the game said, “Tendulkar has left the game, so, rest in peace cricket.” Cricket will carry on, but without Tendulkar it will be

the poorer. Are the Indian fans still going to flock through the gates and fill the stadiums in support of the national team, regardless of the Little Maestro’s exit from the game? Will the game in India suffer? We hope it will become stronger. Rohit Sharma’s entry into Test Cricket has almost gone unnoticed, with all the focus on Sachin Tendulkar. Sharma scored a double-century on test debut and followed that up with another big century in his second test match, which was to be the last match for Tendulkar. This is significant because for many years Indian fans and management alike have been anxious about potential heirs to the Tendulkar throne. The little man who holds almost every International batting record imaginable, has been on a downward spiral of form for some time now. But without an obvious replacement he was asked to continue, keeping the hopes of the Indian fans up. The hope in India is that Sharma is that next generation of player entrusted to put on the mantle of the great one, while steadily achieving success and being able to attract and maintain interest in the sport, much needed to feed the cricket hunger of the passionate fans and swell the coffers of the BCCI. Following Tendulkar is an almost impossible task; but in Sharma, India may just have found that enigmatic player. One must consider that Sharma has played 108 ODI cricket games. Tendulkar has been a handy player to have in the team, as his all-round abilities saw him bag 154 wickets in 49 ODI games, with a best haul of 5 wickets for 32 runs. I am sure that you and I will certainly miss the little Master. His teammates, led by skipper Dhoni, made a continuous human tunnel for Tendulkar to walk off the field, after which he then spoke and thanked all the fans for their support as well as his very supportive family, which he owes for his success. What a humble and great man he is and we will all miss him. He not only entertained us with his magical willow, but also played the game in the correct spirit. A true gentleman.
