The new Natalspruit Hospital in Vosloorus celebrated World Radiography Day by hosting a tour of their radiography department to show people the facilities and career opportunities available there. The hospital’s radiography department is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and digital technology to speed up service delivery. There is a mammogram section with a core stream - the latest machine and one that the old hospital did not have. There is also a digital X-ray film connected to all the rooms in the department that produces
rapid, quality films. The new hospital also has ultra-sonar rooms, and Computerised Tomography Scan and Lodox machines. Health-workers say they no longer need to transfer patients to Baragwanath Hospital because the resources they need are now available at the new Natalspruit Hospital.Junior radiographer Nicole Von Platen says radiography is a good occupation for women and they dominate the field. “It is a good career, in that a person can study and work at the same time. We are exposed to the outside world quickly and are a stepping stone to understanding the field of health. People interested in becoming radiographers should pass biology, science and mathematics at
Matric level. They can enrol for a degree in radiography at the university. There are many opportunities in the field and government is offering bursaries.”Vuyo Sibani, Public relations officer at Natalspruit Hospital said, “We are
commemorating this day, paying respect to the people who discovered radiography. It is very important that we have a radiography unit fully fitted with state-of-the-art equipment.”

The Vosloorus Farmer Cooperative established in 2012 for pig-keeping is facing tough times that have resulted in the death of many pigs - out of the original 100 they are left with 31. Without immediate medical expertise, mentorship, feeds, piggery (small pigs) and financial assistance, the project could soon be declared a white elephant before it bears the positive results that were initially anticipated. The cooperative plot is situated in Duduza and consists of seven Vosloorus based residents.Says Busisiwe Simelani, the project secretary, “We were funded by DTI when we kick-started the project; we bought pigs, uniforms and feeds. The challenge is that we don’t have anyone funding us now. Feeds
are expensive, so we often sell pigs to buy feeds and we are not making a profit. The major challenge is that we sell them at a small, growing stage due to lack of food. We cannot afford to buy more pigs.”She said they buy their own medication and no one is checking their pigs. “We all have general knowledge on how to keep pigs, but we are desperately in need of mentorship on the project. We would appreciate it if we could have assistance with feeds, small pigs and finance,” said Simelani. She added that there is no electricity or security on their plot, and six pigs were stolen. Simelani said there are also no septic tanks and they are appealing for help in building them, as the place has a bad odour.
Those who are interested in helping the cooperative should contact Busisiwe Simelani on 071 109 4631 or Agnes Bhanda on 079 585 2762.

In support of cancer awareness, the Nozipho Support Group recently hosted a six-kilometre fun walk for people of all age groups in Ward 95.According to the founder of Nozipho Support Group, Nthabiseng Jikeka, “The event was to make people aware of cancer - that it is there, that early detection saves lives and to encourage them to get tested for cancer. The walk was also to encourage people to exercise, as it is good for health.”Themba Khumalo, Councillor of Ward 95 in
Vosloorus, who was part of the walk, said, “We want to build a healthy community and make people aware of the dangers of cancer. We are encouraging residents, both male and female, to get tested for prostate and breast cancer respectively.”Various stakeholders supported the initiative, namely: GEMS, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and the Lungile Mtshali Group members. They also handed out pamphlets with information about cancer.

As part of celebrating the life of soccer star Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo
Meyiwa, who was shot and killed in Vosloorus - tame TIMES Kathorus, in partnership with Chris Hani Mall, Kasie FM and Orlando Pirates Vosloorus branch, hosted a memorial service. The memorial service was held at the Chris Hani Mall parking lot and attended by Orlando Pirates supporters in particular and football supporters in general wearing their favourite teams’ regalia. They sang many songs praising the team and their fallen hero, but the lyric echoing through the mall building which most caught the attention of the crowd and shoppers was, “USenzo akalalanga uguqe ngamadolo,” which means that Senzo’s soul is not resting peacefully because it was not taken by God’s will.Several speakers from various stakeholders spoke about how Senzo inspired and motivated them to watch soccer with his acrobatic skills and tactics. Vosloorus Police officers from the Crime Prevention unit were also part of the event and highlighted the need for the community has to work with the police to fight crime. Senzo Meyiwa was shot during a house robbery in Mzamo Section 28 in Vosloorus on 26 October while visiting his girlfriend singer Kelly Khumalo. An identikit of the suspects was released and police questioned a number of people in connection with the killing of Meyiwa. The suspects were identified as a result of information received from witnesses as well as the public. One suspect, Zenokuhle Mbatha, a 25-year-old Vosloorus resident, was charged on the basis of positive identification by some of the witnesses and was remanded in custody. He first appeared on 31 October at Boksburg Court and the case was postponed to give him time to get legal aid. He appeared again on 11 November, when the case was withdrawn due to lack of evidence.
Natalspruit Hospital is pleading with the community to collect the unclaimed bodies of patients who died while receiving care at the institution. The hospital management has noted with concern a worrying trend of unclaimed bodies being left for weeks at the hospital mortuary. Although some of the bodies have been in the mortuary from September 2014, they have not yet been collected by family members for dignified burial. The hospital management would like to appeal to community members to come forward and collect the bodies of their loved ones. If they are not collected within 21 days, the institution will be left with no option but to carry out a mass burial for all unclaimed bodies.Members of the public who would like to arrange for collection of the remains of their loved ones should contact the hospital mortuary on: 011 590 0000 and ask for Masesi Mahlangu.

the following arrests were made by Vosloorus Police station officers from 27 october to 2 November:
charges against Zanokuhle mbatha, 25, from Vosloorus, who was implicated in the murder of Bafana Bafana and orlando Pirates captain senzo meyiwa, were withdrawn at the Boksburg magistrate’s court on tuesday.According to the Magistrate, not enough evidence was found linking the accused to the charges. Mbatha was arrested following investigations by the police that apparently implicated him in the murder of Meyiwa. After his arrest, Mbatha spent days in custody; he appeared in court for the first time on 31 October, when he was remanded in custody.Meyiwa was shot and killed in Vosloorus, while visiting his girlfriend, singer and actress Kelly Khumalo on 26 October. It is alleged that two unknown African males entered the house and demanded cellphones before shooting Meyiwa and running away.
In mid-2016 the City of Ekurhuleni will be launching an Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN)
with the aim of providing citizens with public transport that is accessible, safe, reliable and affordable. We have researched and studied the travel patterns within the City, identified the needs of communities and taken into consideration the City’s future development plans as all of these contribute to a successful public transport service. The implementation of the new services will happen in phases and we have identified what is called the Phase 1 route of the service. A Council resolution has been taken in relation to the Phase 1 route. We would like to hear your comments about this Phase 1 route.
The IRPTN will integrate new bus networks, existing bus services, revitalised rail networks, existing mini-bus taxi routes and a network of cycling paths and pedestrian walkways to help people move quickly and easily across the city.
The nature of the service
The IRPTN will use different kinds of infrastructure to ensure that a positive public transport experience is created for citizens. These involve construction of new lanes for public transport vehicles only, called dedicated bus lanes or trunk routes. Upgrading of existing roads to allow for the commuters to reach the main routes through accessing a network of complementary and feeder services. Upgrading of sidewalks and cycle paths to make life easier on foot and on a bicycle. We will also be building high quality public transport stations and stops along the route as well as pedestrian bridges.
Phase 1 Route Description
This first phase will run from Tembisa in the north to Vosloorus in the south. The route will start at Tembisa Hospital and will travel via Kempton Park CBD, OR Tambo International Airport and Boksburg, ending in Vosloorus.
The future of Ekurhuleni is an integrated one, with equal access to jobs and other basic services.

It seems as if the death of South Africa’s number one goalkeeper, the late Senzo Meyiwa, has not gone unnoticed, as South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan and fellow countrymen have officially launched the Gun Free South Africa campaign at Safa’s Nasrec headquarters. Jordaan said they wanted all the weapons confiscated during the campaign to be melted down so that they could be used to make a statue of Senzo Meyiwa which will be placed at the entrance to the Safa headquarters. He further added that the campaign was not only about Senzo, but also about the other 17 people who were shot on the same day Meyiwa was killed. Former SuperSport United FC player Peter “Fire” Kgobane added that youngsters are now afraid to realize their dreams, because criminals have gained the upper hand. He
further cited that, within a short space of time of Meyiwa’s death, the house of BIDVest Wits FC midfielder Sibusiso Vilakazi’s parents was ransacked by criminals, who looted valuable items at gunpoint while the unsuspecting football maestro was asleep on the premises. These incidents have driven Safa to plead with the public to hand in all unlicensed firearms. According to a media report issued by Gun Free South Africa, South Africa has more than 300 000 unlicensed firearms. The campaign is long overdue, as trigger-happy criminals are shooting randomly, disregarding the lives of innocent and law-abiding citizens. However, the Gun Free South Africa campaign will be resurrected too late to prevent the senseless killing of Meyiwa.
