Recently, several of our readers and other interested people asked the question: What progress has been made as far as the establishment of a museum in Alberton is concerned? The Alberton Heritage Society wants to inform the community that the plans are still on track. There are, however, several steps and processes to be followed. At his stage, the possibility of using the old Town Hall on the corner of Van Riebeeck Avenue and Gerrit Maritz Street seems feasible. The Alberton Heritage Society submitted a business plan and we are positive that the plan will be approved. After that, the hard work will start. The museum will be a non-profit organisation in service of the community and will be about sharing, collaborating, enjoying and appreciating. The museum will be a small establishment with an elegant design and inviting appearance where the community will be able to enjoy the exhibitions. It will consist of a series of rooms that will serve as a learning environment and where artefacts will be displayed. There will be several exhibitions of artefacts, crafts, photos, paintings, to mention a few. In
addition, the museum will be engaged in public programmes where the community will be involved, adding to the conversation about the significance of Alberton in the South African history. There will also be school programmes based on the curriculum and it will also serve as an information centre on Alberton’s businesses, activities, attractions, maps, and more. When the museum becomes a reality, the Alberton Heritage Society will need the help and participation of every resident and business in Alberton.
For any information on the Alberton Heritage Society, please call (011) 869-9417 (Beverley-Ann Small) or Daan Grobler (083 380 4072). You can also send an e mail to [email protected] or [email protected]. You can find more information on our website: albertonheritage.co.za or albertonerfenis.co.za.

Winter is here. We started our week with a mini adrenaline rush when someone got hit by a car outside the office. The car just drove off, leaving the man in the pouring rain and excruciating pain. Luckily, we have a few helpful men working at tame TIMES, who didn’t hesitate to go outside and help the man. While we have such great news to share every week, especially regarding community projects such as the Tutela Alberton Dream2Travel launch, it saddens me that things like this happen. We as a community are supposed to look out for each other. This week we commemorate the Soweto uprising of 16 June 1976. It profoundly
changed the socio-political landscape in South Africa. People died for their right to education, and now, 30 years later, educational centres are being destroyed, depriving others of their right to education. I will never understand the logic behind this.On a positive note, we are celebrating Father’s Day on Sunday 19 June. To all the fathers out there, may you have a blessed day filled with fun and surprises. For those who don’t know how they’re going to celebrate the day, check out the specials advertised in the paper. I’m sure you will find something awesome to do!

Daarna praat ek en my dogter so oor die gevliegery en sy sê vir my, “Ja jong ma, oudword is nie vir sissies nie.”Ek word g’n niks oud nie! Magaliesberg is mos nie ver hiervandaan nie.Tip: YOLO (You Only Live Once) – Maak die meeste daarvan.

South African rugby supporters were left disappointed on Saturday when the Boks lost 26-20 to Ireland at Newlands. It was Ireland’s first ever win in South Africa. South Africa’s Pat Lambie was knocked out cold by Stander when the Bok flyhalf had kicked ahead, causing the Boks a crucial red card. There was a clear concern for Lambie’s well-being in the stands. Elton Jantjies entered with his right middle finger strapped and knocked over a penalty from point-blank range, and was also instrumental to the Boks’ first try following another solid set piece.Ireland however stunned the Boks when scrumhalf Connor Murray ran through some poor Bk defence to score Ireland’s second try for the day. The Boks came close to scoring again through Lood de Jager, but the Irish defence held firm. The last ten minutes of the game had Newlands tense, with JP Pietersen barging over in the left corner in the final movement, as the Bok’s No 14 was held up in and wrestled to tuch.
