Francis Turbines
Francis turbines are most suited or low to medium head applications and have a variable ow range which generally
extends rom 40-110% o the nominal ow rate. The ow rate or power output is controlled by opening or closing the guide
vanes. Tamars Francis machines are oten employed as revenue generating alternatives or pressure reducing
valves in existing water inrastructure.

Can be confgured as either horizontal or vertical machines

Pump as Turbine
Tamars range o pump as turbine machines are ideal orlow to medium head applications where the head and owremain relatively constant. This range o machines havesimilar characteristics to the Francis Turbine, howeverwithout the movable guide vanes.

Kaplan
Kaplan turbines are recommended or low head applications. They generally have a ow range extending rom 30 - 110%
o the nominal ow rate. Double Regulated Kaplan turbines have both variable guide vanes and runner blades which ensure
a high and at efciency curve across the entire ow range. These turbines can also be oered as single regulating and fxed
ow (propeller) machines.

Turgo
Turgo Impulse turbines are applicable or medium to high head applications and overlap the boundary o Pelton and Francis
machines. These turbines are well suited to run o river schemes as they can tolerate some dirty water and perorm well
over a wide ow range. Whilst their peak efciency is lower than Francis machines, they can oten generate more energydue to their at efciency curve and high partial load efciency, and as such can be preerable where considerable water
supply uctuations are experienced. The use o deectors can mitigate issues o pressure surges in the upstream pipework,
even on ull load rejections.

Pelton
Pelton turbines are designed or high head applications. These machines are impulse turbines using the kinetic energy
o water impinging on the runner bucket to turn the generator shat. Pelton turbines can handle wide ow variations
down to 10% o nominal ow. Their at efciency curves yield excellent perormance over this wide operating range.

The turbine is pivotal to the success o any hydro project; urthermore, the turbine requires careul integration
with the civil, hydraulic, electrical and mechanical portions o the project.
Tamar have many years o hydro experience and completed around two hundred successul hydro schemes. As such we are
best placed to oer an optimally integrated hydro package. Whilst the turbine Selection Chart below provides a quick guide
to the operating range o the types o Tamars turbine types, it can be seen that there is signifcant overlap on the duty o
these machines. As the ideal turbine selection or a given application and site is dependent on many parameters, we highly

Tamars specialty is water to wire turnkey packages. As the majority
o all design work is in house, our engineered hydro power solutions
are exible and each design ensures that the best possible solution is

Containerised Hydro Power Solutions
Tamars turnkey containerised systems consist o complete hydro power
plants ully installed within a shipping container at the actory. These high
quality units are as close to plug and play as possible and have numerous
advantages over traditional hydro installations. Fully integrated power plants
are possible with options such as lighting, ventilation, overhead cranes etc.

Retro-Fitted Hydro Turbine Installations
Tamar has extensive experience in developing and implementing retroftted
hydro power solutions designed to exploit the potential energy and improve
the efciency o existing utilities and water systems. Over the past 35
years, Tamar has installed many thousands o kW o hydro electric power
in existing irrigation schemes, waste water systems, storage dams and into
existing water utility inrastructure.
With the rising costs o power, more and more organisations are searching
or ways to improve efciency and reduce operating costs. Tamars Hydro
Turbines present a viable option in a wide range o circumstances and
can provide a cost eective solution to achieve the best efciency and

Leveraging o experience gained over more than 35 years, Tamar oer
a range o consultancy services in the hydropower feld, including easibility
studies, site assessments and evaluation o existing hydropower assets

Our in house design capability includes 3D design parametric modelling,
AutoCAD electrical, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational
