Survey Results
A large percentage of 92% like to watch music videos which is a major majority of the sample
population.
As little as 3.6% of the sample population would say that folk music is their favourite
The reason I am pointing this out is because the genre ‘folk’ is our choice of genre we have chosen
to focus on.
This is not necessarily due to folk music being disliked; it may be because consumers are not as
aware of folk music in this era as they were in the 20th century. – It contrasts with commercial styles-
A significant percentage of the sample population like to see the artist appear in
the video.
This suggests to me that they may like to see the
artist lip synching- this is a very common convention of
a music video
The majority of people like to feel a sense of narrative as suggested by 85% of the sample population.
Folk music tends to compliment a narrative theme as it tends the be more about the lyrics as
well as the ‘catchy’ upbeat melody
Humour may not necessarily compliment our choice of song.
However folk music generally sets a light-hearted atmosphere-
it originally was the genre of music produced and consumed
by the lower class
Action sequences tend to submit a movie-based
quality film rather than a music video
However , there is a difference between
action sequence and a fast paced music video- folk music, a lot of the
time, can endorse a fast paced music video
Thought a large percentage like to see dancing in a music video, this goes hand in hand with the genre of music favoured by the majority of the sample population- pop music- Pop music tends to have some sort of dance collaborating with the beat of the song as they tend to be uplifting
and memorable.
Thought this is a large percentage, it may not be fully applicable to a folk song,
despite folk mostly being upbeat.
These results show no significant answer
Due to folk music originally being produced the lower classes, low quality shots
would compliment the traditional feature of the
genre- black and white would reiterate the quality of old
music videos
The majority of the sample population prefer multiple location to feature music videos. This does
not necessarily have to be complicated. Single locations are reflect well on old music videos when
technology was still developing significantly.
The theme of my chosen song
requires multiple locations
Due to the fact that folk music is not as admired as other genres, I am keeping
the video simple and traditional. A complex video would not complement
the genre folk.
Reinforces the idea that the sample population like the artist to appear
in the video- as suggested on question 3-Diegetic sound is unnecessary in
terms of promotion of the song. People don’t think it has any
relevance in the video
Complex music videos depict the music video as
the important aspect rather than the song.
Some people compliment a video rather than the song
itself
Not a significant difference between the
two percentages, however, it does have
some effect as a marketing device for 57.1% to vote ‘yes’
42.9 percentage seem to suggest that they would not make a
purchase because of the video which implies that
the song is what ultimately leads them to
make a purchase
ConclusionIn conclusion, a simple music video which can relate to the narrative suggested by the
lyrics is appreciated by the sample population.
The artist is expected to appear in a good music video. They are a product in themselves- if consumers like other material artists have produced then seeing them in a music video
could lead them to assume that the song will be worth purchasing.
A key aspect we need to think about is filming on multiple locations with 78.6% favouring multiple locations to feature in a music video.
The sample population seem to be put off by certain colour edits with 46.4% answering that they would not be put off by any colouring edits the rest of the answers divided by
colouring edits which put them off.
To summarise, when planning the responses to the survey questions will need to be taken into consideration as well as the conventions of a music video specific
to the genre folk.
