Brendan Norton, Family Support Navigator, Saratoga Prevention Council Allison Weingarten, Director of Policy, FOR-NY 1:00pm – 5:00pm Addiction Medicine Institute Hosted by the New York Society of Addiction Medicine

Location: Meeting Room 5 Topics will include: Substance Use Disorders and Anxiety The relationship between substance use disorders and anxiety is complex. Addiction physicians face a major challenge in managing anxiety disorders, such as PTSD, in patients using alcohol, benzodiazepines and opiates. This presentation will provide a framework for evaluating the patient with substance use disorders and co-occurring anxiety disorders, and assist the professional in decision-making to manage these patients in clinical practice or a treatment team setting. Making the Emergency Department a Path to Recovery Given the alarming epidemic of opiate addiction and opiate overdose mortality, the Emergency Department is a setting that is of critical importance in the evaluation, stabilization, and referral to treatment for individuals, and their families, afflicted with opiate addiction. This presentation will provide the addiction physician with a clearer understanding of the complicated clinical variables in evaluating and treating opiate addicted patients, and the vital importance of communication to addiction treatment providers in the community. Engineering Neurobiological Systems Psychodynamic treatment of addiction requires an understanding of drug effects on the

brain. Neuropsychoanalysis involves correlation of psychoanalytic psychology and clinical

patient experiences with neurobiology and therefore fulfills this requirement. Engineering models

are based on neurobiology. Models facilitate efficacy of treatment.

Also, join us for a NYSAM membership meeting, networking and refreshments. Twice as many high school students are using electronic cigarettes, as compared to combustible tobacco. Join us in a conversation to learn more about the devious marketing tactics of the tobacco companies, the lies mainstream media tells us about electronic cigarettes, and the culture young adults have created around vaping. Almost 70% of teens believe that their electronic cigarette only contains water and flavoring. It’s time we equip ourselves with the knowledge to educate our youth. Presenter (s):

On one hand, NIDA funded studies demonstrate that the impact of drugs on the developing brain for youth presents tremendous risk and that the concentrations- “strength” of marijuana sampled off the street is the strongest ever. Then on the other hand, state governments are legalizing marijuana not only for medicinal purposes, but recreational. The end result is a generation of parents that have become complacent with drug use by their kids and young people who feel more empowered than ever before to use drugs. In the midst of this attitudinal shift in society, parents are not seeking help until their children’s use is at a far more progressed state. Unfortunately, when parents are seeking help, they are resistant, ambivalent at best in signing on to the appropriate level of care for the appropriate length of time. The end result is a larger number of youth who are at increased risk to use pills and opioids that may otherwise have been treated sooner with a better prognosis. This mini plenary is targeting discussion, strategies and recommendations that may ameliorate the current condition surrounding youth substance use and connections to treatment. Presenter (s): John Venza, LCSW-R, LMHC, VP, Outreach Project, Inc. Karen Carlini, Associate Director, Dynamic Youth Community, Inc. Are we thinking this will go away and not
