Dear Parents/Carers, It has been another busy year at Stanwell and one that finishes on a high with the publication of the Estyn report following the inspection in May 2015. I am delighted to announce that our school has been judged as Excellent, both for current standards and prospects for improvement, as well as Excellent for all three key questions. This is a remarkable achievement which justly reflects the commitment and work ethic of our school community. I invite you all to view the full report via the school website or the Estyn website and I am sure you will share our feeling of pride. Other notable highlights of this year include our two successful musicals, ‘Aida’ and ‘Lion King Junior’, our accreditation as an Improvement Hub for the Central South Consortium, our first school sportsday at Leckwith stadium and the completion of our new synthetic and natural turf pitches. In order to improve access to and from the school buses, we have constructed a footpath across the field to the boundary in Victoria Road where the bus bays will be marked out by the Vale of Glamorgan Council for use from the start of the Au-tumn term. It is clear from this newsletter that our pupils are certainly making the most of the multitude of opportunities offered to them at Stanwell and in the wider community. The achievements are very impressive and I hope you enjoy read-ing all the news of trips, visits and participation in extra-curricular activities. On behalf of the staff and governors, I wish you all a happy and restful sum-mer holiday, Derek Jones, Headteacher.

Greetings from the school

“number of bio-diversity surveys”

Mrs J Laity

The Eco Stanwell committee has continued to work tirelessly on a number of environmental projects over the spring and summer terms. The effort and enthusiasm shown by committee members along with the support of pupils and staff, has resulted in the school gaining the third and last ‘Green Flag Award’. This award recog-nises the commitment the school community is making towards improving the environment both within school and the wider area. The next stage is to gain a Platinum award, an award very few secondary schools achieve.

THE GREEN FLAG Outlined below are some of the environmental actions the committee has addressed: 1. Fairtrade - the committee aims to promote

and support the Fairtrade movement and as part of this process, pupils from all year groups were offered a range of Fairtrade goods to help support farmers from poorer countries of the world. During ‘Fairtrade Fortnight 2015’ a stall supplying Fairtrade goods was created during break times with Fairtrade chocolate, bananas and hot choco-late proving to be very popular with both pupils and staff alike. The committee aims to achieve Fairtrade status for Stanwell School following a number of events organ-ised over the last two years. The committee wishes to thank all students, staff and par-ents for supporting Fairtrade activities dur-ing this time.

2. The wildlife garden - Plans to develop a large wildlife garden adjacent to the new all-weather pitch are still ongoing, with the com-mittee hoping that work will commence in this area during the new academic year. As part of this process pupils are required to complete a number of biodiversity surveys including one concentrating on the bird population within this area. With this in mind, a number of com-mittee members participated in the ‘Big Bird Watch Garden Survey’ organised by the RSPB during early spring. Pupils arrived at school early and, using a check list supplied by the RSPB, conducted a thorough survey of the ar-ea. This was a national event and the data col-lected by eco members contributed towards a much larger national survey. The results of the Eco Stanwell survey are outlined below:

The smaller wildlife garden located near the sixth form cafe has now become an established garden with a range of plants, herbs and fish, offering wildlife and members of the school community a safe and relaxing environment. This area extends behind the art block, where a section has been roped off and seeded with wild flowers supplied by Kew Gardens, the Royal Botanic Gardens Society based in Lon-don. This organisation is trying to encourage the development of wildlife areas around the UK by supplying a ‘Grow Wild’ pack for free.

Welsh Senior Eco-Committee – Sharing,

Inspiring, Empowering!

Sponsored by Julie Morgan AM

On Monday 29th June 2015, four Eco Stan-well members were invited to participate in an annual Senior Eco Schools meeting held at the Welsh Assembly, Cardiff Bay. Pupils from many secondary schools in South Wales shared ideas and discussed a number of environmental issues on a national scale. The focus for the day was ‘If we look after Wales – Wales will look after us!’ Pupils were asked to discuss a number of items out-lined on the new Welsh Assembly ‘Environment Bill’. This is a proposed law coming in force in 2016 that will help man-age ways of tackling climate change in the future. A number of environmental issues are addressed within the bill including future en-ergy, minimising waste and sustainable transport. On the day pupils participated in a series of workshops and a very informative question time session with the Minister for Natural Resources, Carl Sargeant. Two or-ganisations supporting the workshops were Sustrans and Love Food Hate Waste, both of whom supplied useful and informative infor-mation for pupils to apply back in school.

Eco Stanwell committee aims to conserve the environment and as such have created a statement to promote this as outlined above.

“national competition organised by Keep Wales Tidy”

Young Reporters for the Environment In-ternational Winners.

Two Year 12 students have gained interna-tional recognition for an environmental re-port titled ‘Boiling the Planet Away’. As part of the Welsh Baccalaureate programme in the sixth form, students are asked to research and report upon an environmental issue of interest to them. Sarah Brabham and Alice Holder created a 1000 word repor t dis-cussing the environmental impacts of boiling a full kettle of water unnecessarily. This was then entered into a national competition or-ganised by Keep Wales Tidy, called the Young Reporters for the Environment. The girls were successful in gaining first position to become Welsh winners for the 15-18 writ-ten category. Subsequently, as national win-ners, the environmental report was resubmit-ted into an international round, where entries

from around 29 countries were judged by experienced journalists including Huw Ed-wards. The results were announced in May and both girls must be congratulated for gaining third place internationally, the only British students to do so.

Stanwell PTA

Dear Parents and friends of Stanwell School,

We are pleased to have the opportunity to tell you who we are, what we do and some of our achievements on behalf of the school.

The PTA committee is made up of Stanwell staff and parents and we meet to discuss infor-mally how we can best support the school and our children in school.

Our main role is to raise funds and be a link for the parents and friends of Stanwell to the school, but we also support the school by help-ing out at functions, such as plays, concerts, and parents' evenings.

The main way in which you can support the school through the PTA is by;

Becoming a part of the PTA and supporting the events we run and support. Our AGM will be on the 22nd September 2015 at 7pm in the 6th Form Café and we would encourage as many parents and friends to attend as pos-sible.

Become a member of our 100 Club. This is a monthly lottery where for £12 for the year, you are entered into a draw and can win up to £25. You can download forms from the website (see web address below).

Join us at our social events such as our Christmas Market (November 28th 2015 1-4pm) and the ever-popular Quiz Night (date in January 2015 to be announced).

The details of all the PTA’s activities and up-coming events for the next academic year, in-cluding a form to join the 100 club, can be found on the school website page under the heading ‘Information for parents’.

The web address is http://www.stanwell.org/school/pta/. You can also find us on Facebook (Stanwell School PTA) and on Twitter (@Stanwell_pta) where we will keep you updat-ed with regular news and events.

The money we raise for the school has allowed us to make substantial donations towards the school's exchanges, the Debating Society, library books, computer equipment, equipment for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, sports equip-ment, clothing and awards, musical instruments, stage lighting, dance studio mirrors and video editing equipment.

Our target in 2015-2016 is to raise £22,000 to buy a new minibus for the school for the safe transportation of the pupils. To date, we have al-ready raised and given to the school £7,000 for the new minibus

We would welcome your support, as a member of the PTA Committee, and/or helping out at PTA events. We meet each term and would like you to join us. Details are posted on the website nearer the time of the meetings.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

The summer term is always a busy time with expeditions and this year has been no differ-ent. The Bronze and Gold groups have fol-lowed on from the very successful Silver ex-peditions.

The Silver assessed expedition took place in April in the Brecon Beacons area. This was the largest Silver group in one expedition with 102 pupils completing their journey over the three days. Pupils were generally well prepared with their packing and for the cold nights.

The bronze group was split again this year to accommodate the large numbers on expedi-tion. The first groups undertook their practice expedition from Kenfig Nature Reserve to Nash Point and their assessed expedition down the Gower in June with the following half of the group completing theirs in July.

The gold groups have just completed their assessed expedition up in Mid Wales and proved yet again their excellent teamwork and navigational skills.

Many thanks to Paul James who co-ordinates the Gold award. With 9 pupils attending St James Palace before Christmas to receive their Gold award from the Duke of Edinburgh him-self, let’s hope this year’s group numbers are as pleasing.

The expeditions are always very well support-ed by staff and parents, with the latter helping to ensure that participants arrive prepared and that expedition equipment is returned in a suit-able condition by the deadline date. Staff help to deliver the training throughout the school year, drive minibuses for expeditions or help with the equipment handling. Without this in-valuable support the scheme would never be successful. A big thank you as always to the contributions throughout the year and please can participants remember to upload their as-sessors reports for all their eDofE sections to get the final completion for their award. Well done to all participants that have already re-ceived their certificate of completion. We look forward to another year of high num-bers of uptake and completion of the Award at Bronze, Silver and Gold level.

Award Ceremony: Art & Design Award winners 2015

The Art Department were delighted to award the KS3 award to Lily Ireland (8R), KS4 award to Charlotte Hardy (11T) and the Sixth Form Award to Duncan Keeling (Y13). All the winners demonstrated a superb level of dedication and commitment to their studies resulting in outstanding pieces for their projects and final exam. Well done to you all!

Art Visit to Madrid and Toledo: February 2015

Pupils from Years 7-13 took part in a won-derful visit to the historic cities of Madrid and Toledo. Time was spent viewing the varied art works in the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofia Museums.

Right: beautiful coursework studies by Charlotte Hardy (11T), based on ar-chitectural photos of Amsterdam.

We were delighted to welcome 49 Year 4 pu-pils from Albert School on 1st July to take part in a creative workshop in the department. Mrs Penny and Miss Lewis introduced the theme of Art Around the World. Bold tonal drawings of plants were used as inspiration for colourful, stylised paintings.

Mobile sculp-ture by Dun-can Keeling (Y13), final piece for A2 Fine Art based on the theme of disruptive weather sys-tems.

Astudiaethau Busnes Land Rover factory tour

Pupils from Year 10 and Year 12 were given the opportunity to attend a trip to the Land Rover factory in Solihull in April. During the trip pupils were given a safety presentation followed by a video that detailed the history and product range of Land Rover. In small groups, pupils also received a guided tour of the factory outlining several stages of the production process enabling pupils to get a sound understanding of how computer-aided design has improved the efficiency of the pro-duction line. Detailed explanations of Just-in Time, Right-First-Time and Lean Working practices were covered.

Pupils examined Land Rover’s marketing strat-egies and Total Quality Management tech-niques during a lecture packed with insider knowledge.

Activities that were observed on the factory floor were then reinforced as pupils had to produce models by setting up their own assembly line.

Some pupils had a natural flair for programming a robotic arm to perform tasks seen as part of computer-aided manufacture in the factory.

Throughout the trip pupils developed their teamwork, communication and problem solving skills.

London trip In the summer term, a group of Year 9 pupils joined with the Economics department on an overnight trip to London to visit the Bank of England, Metal Exchange, London Dungeons and the Emirates Stadium.

Government and Politics Government and Politics students have been extending their understanding of the demo-cratic processes in the UK and the USA. Year 13 students have taken a keen interest in US Government this year—including analysing the evolution of the US constitution and eval-uating the effectiveness of the US Congress, the Supreme Court and the Presidency. For example, they investigated the impact of the Supreme Court on US political culture. Key questions included whether the Court is too political (in terms of the impact of its rul-ings) and whether it plays a significant role in the protection of civil liberties. They also con-sidered which of the Executive or the Legisla-tive branches are the most influential and as-sessing whether the term ‘Imperial Presiden-cy’ is actually an over-statement. They also held a debate to focus on the effectiveness of the US Constitution. Year 12 students have been busy studying key aspects of UK Politics. For example, they have investigated the role of leadership in po-litical parties to ascertain whether the leader-ship or the mass membership dominates. They have recently investigated the impact and ef-fectiveness of the Welsh Assembly. In addition, Year 12 and 13 Politics students enjoyed the experience of a lecture held by Charles Clarke (ex Home secretary) at USW. This event gave students the opportunity to further their understanding of elections, gov-ernmental business and offered a fascinating insight. In addition, we all watched the 2015 election and the leadership debates with great enthusiasm and interest. Keen readers are welcome to follow us via Twitter on Politics2XL.

Economics Congratulations to Stanwell’s Monetary poli-cy Committee! Having won the Welsh heat of

the Bank of Eng-land 2.0 Challenge they were awarded second place in the Area Finals, beating seasoned competi-tors such as Mill-field School. The

pupils made a presentation to members of the Bank of England recommending the level to set the base rate. Following their presentation they faced rigorous questioning from the judging panel. Pictured left to right are Jamie Hitchen, Megan Doran, Zola Hargreaves, Carys Warner and Jay Kapuria.

July saw GCSE students have the opportunity to take part in a two day visit to London, the commercial capital of the world. This was an excellent opportunity for pupils to gain a fur-ther understanding of the economy and the impact on business. Activities included; visits to the Bank of England, The London Metal Exchange, the Science Museum and Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. Pupils were entertained with dinner in Covent Garden and a visit to the London Dungeons. To keep up to date on all things to do with Economics please follow us on ECON_2XL.

Cardiff University & WWU

Year 13 were once again given the opportunity to use the testing facilities at Cardiff Universities Engineering Department to aid them with their ‘Applied Engineering Systems’ unit. The students were able to carry out a number of tensile tests on sam-ples of steel with var-ying carbon contents, and then analyse the results. To be able to complete their ‘Engineering Envi-ronment’ unit, the students also spent the day at Wales & West Utilities in Treforest. They were given a tour of the facility and specifically access to and explanation of the control systems that govern the gas pressure in the net-work of pipeline around the country. From this they were able to gain an under-standing of the complexities involved in predict-ing the amount of gas required in different parts of Wales at different times of the day and year.

Go4Set A Year 9 team consisting of Leah Edwards, Joya Sims, Yaseen Ghandour, Zacchary Filliau, Connor Hamilton, Ellie Adams and Libero Tassinari worked with ARUP for 3 months. They were set the task of designing a zero-carbon classroom for a school of the fu-ture. Throughout the scheme they had to pro-duce designs and develop one into a scale mod-el which was presented at the award event in February. The team had a fantastic experience working with the engineer from Arup.

Engineering in Education Scheme

April 2015 saw the conclusion to the 25th En-gineering in Education Scheme (Wales). Two teams of Year 12 students have worked ex-tremely hard over the six month scheme with great success. Team A (Jack Jones, Josh Lewis, Wil Mere-dith, Ed Fudge, Simon Barber, Ryan Gilli-gan, Morgan Jones and Zac Dyer) worked with Lion Laboratories and produced a fully coded test station to test the main PCB from the Lion DS-10 Interlock system. The compa-ny are hoping to install the test station on to their production line in the coming months.

Engineering Club Our new Engineering club is coming to the end of its first year and it has gone from strength to strength.

Pupils across all year groups have enjoyed the various activities that have taken place in the club, ranging from guest speakers to

computer aided design to design and build activities using meccano. Shown above are members of the Engineer-ing Club with representatives of Laing O’Rourke who donated a number of meccano sets to the group.

Talent 2030 Congratulations to the six pupils who en-tered the Talent 2030 competition this year. Charlotte Welsh (Y7), Maria Gallone (Y7), Raya Dean (Y7), Harriet Marshall (Y8), Meredith Holland (Y8) and Famke Ash-more (Y8) all worked collaboratively to come up with solutions to modern day engi-neering issues of their choice. We look for-ward to entering pupils into the scheme again next year.

Saesneg Penfriends in Nagasaki, Japan

Mrs Sheldon's Year 8 class have received an-other parcel of penfriend letters from Futsu-Cho Junior High School in Nagasaki, Ja-pan. The Japanese students have sent person-alised letters to Stanwell students, telling us about school life in Japan and sending small gifts of origami and stickers. Year 8 pupils were busy writing friendship poems to send back to our Japanese friends before the Sum-mer holidays.

Book in a Day On Wednesday 3rd June, Stanwell hosted a writing workshop organised by Steve Chap-man and the Central South Consortium. The objective was for pupils to write a book in a day. Year 8 pupils worked with primary school pupils from across the Consortium. Pupils worked hard to create different chap-ters of the book and Year 8 pupils did an out-standing job helping to edit the work that was produced. It was a very successful day and the writing was of an excellent standard. “Everyone learned something new about writ-ing or about making books,” Ffion McCul-loch.

English Revision Club Year 10 students showed real dedication in the run up to their English Literature examina-tion

by attending after school revision club. Pupils really got stuck in to our ‘circuit training’ on ‘Of Mice and Men’! Everyone worked very hard and had a positive attitude, which helped create a lovely learning environment. Pupils worked on whole-class activities, carried out group discussions and were enthusiastic about the ‘quick-fire’ revision tasks. We wish them the very best for results day and well done for working so hard.

Creative Writing Club

The Creative Writing Club has had an excel-lent year. We’ve entered several competitions, including BBC Radio 2’s 500 Words and the Young Writers’ ghost story competition. We have spent the majority of the year working on creating an alternative mythology for the crea-tion of the world. The idea is that every reality, every mythology, is actually a computer simu-lation, connected on a network. The basis for the club’s mythology is when the network crashes due to a virus and all the realities be-come aware of the face they are programmes. Currently, they are writing the war between the Megabytes and the Gigabytes and having a lot of fun doing it.

The Writers’ Squad. We participated in the Penarth Writers’ Squad again this year and had three Year 7 pupils, Bethan Chalk, Jamie Collinson and Jac Tucker attended. They were involved in three workshops with published authors who gave them great advice and feedback on their writing. It was a hugely enjoyable experience for the pupils.

“Everyone learned something new about writing or about making books.”

Daearyddiaeth

“Geography is important because it is relevant to all that we do and opens our eyes to the world we live in.”

It has been a very busy term in the Geography department. Year 7 pupils have been learning about Rivers and Water Aid. The pupils have found out for themselves the difficulties encountered by people from around the world who suffer from water scarcity. Our particular focus was on a rural village in Zimbabwe, where the pupils had to problem solve a situation where they had to get water from a river 7km away from their village.

Year 8 pupils have been studying Tropical Rainforests and enjoyed a visit to the education centre in Bristol Zoo, where they were able to get a little too close to some of the animals that live in this hot and humid climate! As

you can see from the photos below, some of the pupils got to hold the hissing cockroaches from Madagascar.

Year 9 students have made excellent progress at the start of their GCSE studies . In February, some Year 9 pupils went to London for two days. The aim was to gain valuable fieldwork skills in preparation for controlled assessment assignments all Geography pupils are expected to complete as part of the GCSE course. The first day involved a ride in the ‘Emirates Cable Car’ to gain an aerial view of the O2 Arena and other redeveloped areas along the River Thames. Visits to the ‘Sustainable Cities’ exhibition and the Natural History Museum followed. The second day involved a visit to the redeveloped Stratford area of London where the Olympic Park now shows evidence of the legacy of the 2012 London Olympics and a study of why these games were described as the ‘greenest Olympics ever’!

Geography

“Geography is found in everything we do and everywhere we go.”

In March, a number of Year 12 geography students visited Cardiff Bay and Cardiff City centre to complete a human fieldwork investigation into the impact of regeneration schemes on the inhabitants of Butetown and Cardiff City centre. The day was sunny and windy and the students learned and applied a variety of fieldwork techniques that they used in their AS geography exams in May.

In June, 135 Year 10 pupils also visited the Cardiff Bay and the Butetown area to explore for themselves the economic, social and environmental impacts of regeneration on the original inhabitants of the areas. The results from the day will go towards a project which is 10% of their final GCSE grade.

For a large part of the year, Geography club members have carried out research and used their vast knowledge of literature to identify fictional books that contained maps, to create a literacy display. Pupils researched the books to locate the maps, which were then extracted and used in the display and connected with the birth place of the author. The result is now displayed in the Geography department and looks very impressive.

On June 30th, three pupils from Year 8 and three from Year 9 attended the Geographical Association Welsh Wize Quiz in Cardiff University. Both teams made an excellent effort and represented the school brilliantly. The Year 8 team were on top form and came joint first, and therefore are South Wales champions. A massive well done to both teams.

Hanes It has been another very eventful and enjoya-ble term in the History Department. Throughout the year, Year 7 pupils have been studying Medieval Life and the challenges facing people at this time. They have been studying many diverse and interesting topics, ranging from the Black Death to medieval medicine. Their effort and enthusiasm in class has been outstanding and they should be con-gratulated on an excellent year’s work. Year 8 have been thoroughly interested in studying World War One throughout the sum-mer term. Topics studied have included the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and the many reasons why the men of Great Britain joined up in their millions. The enthusiasm for History has been a delight to see and their work in class has been most impressive. Year 9 pupils have been studying the rise and the fall of the American economy as part of their USA 1910-1929 course. Topics covered include the causes of the economic boom and the Wall Street Crash. They have worked su-perbly all year and will no doubt carry this through into Year 10.

In preparation for their controlled assessment in Year 10, forty-one Year 8 and 9 pupils vis-ited the battlefields of the Great War. Sites visited included Ypres, where the pupils demonstrated great maturity whilst witnessing

emotional and touching ceremony of the Last Post at the Menin Gate. They also visited Mametz Wood, the scene of tragic heroism by men of the 38th Welsh Division. The behav-iour of Stanwell pupils was exemplary and they were a credit to themselves and the school. Once again, the thriving annual History De-partment visit to Berlin was a huge success. It is now in its sixteenth year and is more popular than ever. Eighty-five Year 10 pupils travelled to Berlin over the Easter holidays to visit sev-eral sites of historical interest with particular

emphasis on Nazi Germany and the Cold War. Sites visited included Sachsenhausen Concen-tration Camp, the Olympic Stadium, Check-point Charlie, the Brandenberg Gate and the Reichstag building. On a lighter note, pupils watched, listened and danced to tribute acts such as Elvis, Freddie Mercury and Tina Turner and enjoyed a lively meal in the Hard Rock Café! Year 13 pupils Rebecca Nation, Isaac Ridgly, Maddy Rufo and Emma Thorne had the privilege of being selected to participate in the Auschwitz Initiative this year. They met with a Holocaust survivor before visiting Auschwitz in February. All of the pupils remarked that it is an experience that will never leave them.

“The enthusiasm for History has been a delight to see”

course have been learning about the basics of computer programming, creating conditional and interactive programs using Python. Python is an open sources programming language and works very well with PyScripter an integrated development environment, both of which are free to download onto your home computer, so coding can continue at home! Pupils in Year 10 ICT pupils are currently producing graphics work relating to a new ride in an existing Theme Park. This work will be submitted to the exam board this November. Year 11 pupils studying ICT have created some fantastic Heroes and Villains project, most notably Seren Marsh, Megan Jones, Amy McAndrew, Ffion Phillips to name a few. I wish all our Year 11 GCSE students all the best for this summer’s results in both core and option ICT and Computer Science.

Sixth Form There was some excellent A2 pupils’ work for their Multimedia and Graphics Unit this summer, notably William Creaven, Rhys Evans and Madelyn Rufo. William Creaven also won the GTi Information Technology Award in the recent annual Awards Ceremony. The programming work produced at AS and A2 by computing students was also first class, of particular note was Wei Haw Ong in Year 13 and in Year 12 Jack Jones and Jack Bosley produced excellent projects. Jack Bosley also won the AP Bartlett Cup (Computing) in this summer’s Awards Ceremony. I wish all our AS and A2 students all the best for this summer’s results.

Mr P Davies

Primary Liaison We’ve had a number of successful transition visits this year in IT from both Year 5 and 6 pupils. Year 6 created interesting videos to raise awareness and teach younger pupils the importance of e-safety. Some pupils also made cool animations using Flash as well! Year 5 pupils showed their creativity during the enterprise day by designing a ‘World’s best teacher’ mirror. We look forward to meeting you all again in September.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, pupils learned about e-safety, spreadsheet, database and presentation skills. Additionally they were introduced to coding through Scratch, a programming language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games and animations. Next year we will be looking for a small group of volunteers from KS3 to become Digital Leaders. More information about how to get involved will be available in the coming year.

Mr A Meddins

Mathemateg It has been a successful year in the Mathe-matics department. Following on from the GCSE exams sat in November by Year 11, the results in January were fantastic! 87% of the pupils who sat the exams achieved a C grade or higher which represents the best re-sults in Maths ever! All the pupils and staff are to be praised for the effort put in—the year group really bought in to the revision process and the opportunities presented to them showing that real hard work and determination can be rewarded! Years 12 and 13 have also taken their AS and A Level examinations respectively. We say goodbye and good luck to our Year 13 stu-dents and look forward to welcoming back some Year 11 pupils for AS Maths and Fur-ther Maths in September. Year 10 pupils have nearly finished the GCSE Maths course. It is now their time in the spotlight where, following the summer break, they will be concentrating on revision techniques and practising past papers in prep-aration for their GCSE exams in Novem-ber—it is hoped that they will adopt the same positive attitude as the current Year 11s so that they can be just as successful! A weekly homework club will run from September on a Monday evening and will be open to all Year 11 pupils. In February, the top sets from Years 9, 10 & 11 took part in the National UKMT Maths challenge at Intermediate level. Congratula-tions to the following pupils who all achieved gold certificates in their respective challenges: Year 9 – Felicity Allen, Oliver Marsh and Katie Jackson Year 10 – Daniel Anderton, Dylan Hughes, Gwyn Donlan and Owain Thomas Year 11 – Jess Martin, Jonathan Wright,

Seren Marsh, Tim Burns, Calum Wincott and Joe Short In April, the top sets from Years 7 and 8 also took part in the National UKMT Maths chal-lenge at Junior level. Again, congratulations to the following pupils who all achieved silver or gold certificates: Year 7 – Matthew Pringle and Lucas Groves (both silver) Year 8 – Max Baker (best in year), Billy McCullagh and Rory Skinner (all gold)

Year 8 pupils proudly showing their certificates

Well done to all 357 pupils who took part in the UKMT Maths challenges, in particular those that achieved gold, silver or bronze cer-tificates. In May, Years 7, 8 and 9 sat their Welsh Gov-ernment National tests. Pupils worked hard in the run up to these and fingers are crossed for a successful outcome. Key Stage 3 Maths Homework Club continued this year with games, numeracy activities, help with homework and revision tips. Finally, and once again, a big thank you to the Year 12 and 13 pupils who completed their community service with the Maths department. Whether it’s helping in Key Stage 3 or Key Stage 4 Homework Clubs or assisting within Maths lessons, their time and efforts are great-ly appreciated.

Media & Film

Once again, it is most satisfying to look back on a productive year in the department. So many things have happened and so much has been achieved. Year 9 & 10 students have started to become confident media analysts, with two examina-tions under their belts and some very promis-ing pieces of early coursework – especially the Year 10 Science Fiction Controlled Assess-ment. Year 11 students applied themselves through-out the year to the task of becoming thoroughly prepared for their GCSE examination. This involved the production of a coursework folder reflecting their very best work and sitting a written examination in June. Outstanding con-trolled assessment folders were produced by Hugo Dodd, Ellen O’Rourke, Lily Winnan, Megan Jones and Emily Geen. This year ’s paper focused on TV & Print-based Advertis-ing. This topic stimulated great interest and enthusiasm on the part of pupils. Year 12 students seem to have relished their first year of A Level study and have just fin-ished the first two of their four modules. The first module was a series of coursework pieces that tested their creative and analytical skills to the limit; the second was a tough external exam that focused this year on magazines for people from different ethnic backgrounds. Students of note for coursework excellence include Joe Andrews, Lauren Faulkner, Michael Regan and Ioan Morgan-Jones. This year was char -acterised by some superb short films. Year 13 students have concluded their two year programme of study and we wish them all the very best for their exam results and future choices. We have seen some accomplished coursework pieces from this cohort, particular-ly from Sinead McCausland, Grace Rees-Williams, Emily Raby, Lydia James and Be-

than Gillum. Extra-curricular

The department has also been extremely busy with extra-curricular activities this year. This has includ-ed the design and production of the promotional ma-terial for ‘Aida’ and ‘The Lion King Jnr’.

The department also designed and produced the pro-gramme for the Stanwell School Awards Ceremony. At the ceremony, the Media Studies Awards for GCSE and A Level were won this year by Hugo Dodd (Year 11) and Bethan Gillum (Year 13). Hugo has worked enthusiastically and consistent-ly, producing an outstanding coursework folder, whilst Bethan received this year’s A Level Media Prize for her consistently high standards of attain-ment.

Film Studies 2014/2015 has been another encouraging year for Film Studies. The standard of filmmaking has im-proved once again with impressive productions in Years 12 and 13. Lauren Faulkner, Ethan Nicholas, Ioan Morgan-Jones, Joe Andrews, Morgan Da-vies and Curtis-Lee McDonnell all produced su-perb work. There have also been excellent creative screenplays and digital storyboards submitted for assessment. The third annual Film Studies prize went to Calum Page-Beighton for his filmmaking, commitment in class and his overall enthusiasm throughout the year.

BTEC Creative Media Production

The department’s third qualification also went from strength to strength this year with a number of students in Year 13 attaining a Distinction with Stephanie

Ieithoedd Modern Easter was celebrated in style this year with the “Grosse Ostereierjagd” (Easter egg hunt). Pupils had to use their detective skills to locate 20 eggs hidden around the school. Each was decorated in two colours with the name of a German town. The main winner was Phoebe Scott-Quinlan (8X). There were runner-up prizes for Rebekah Coles (10M), Rowan Deininger-Smith (9O), Luisa Diment (8X), Harry Newman (10L) ,Lucy Richards (11M), Olivia Tyso (8X) and Natasha Walker (8L).

There were also consolation prizes for the following pupils: Yola Bailey (8X), Ruby Bollington (10R), Rob Brown (10W), Lucia Cavaliere (10M), Jade Griffiths

(8M), Carmela Hermogeno (10K), Lucy Jones (8E), Sam Kneale (8X), Megan Lee (8E), Ffion McCulloch (8M), Rhiannon Pearce (11X), Alex Ruge-Hayes (10A), Lauren Ruge-Hayes (8O), Amina Safdar (10T) and Alicia Wells (8K). The annual visit to France was again a great success with both staff and 108 members of Year 8 thoroughly enjoying their cultural experience. Pupils had the opportunity to see a number of famous Parisian landmarks as well as spending a day in Disneyland where a special St. Da-vid’s Day celebration was taking place!

A big thank you to Miss Cross and Mrs Symonds for organising this.

MFL The French department enjoyed a visit to the seaside town of Boulogne in July. 43 pupils from Year 7 spent two days prac-tising their French and sampling the de-lights of French culture and cuisine.

The pupils visited Nausicaa, Boulogne’s aquarium where they got to see some very interesting specimens of sea life.

They also had the chance to barter for trin-kets at the morning market in Wimereux.

At the end of this academic year we bid farewell to a number of people who are important to us in the MFL department.

At the end of May we said goodbye to our French assistant Marion Averty and our Austrian assistant Melanie Egger. They both did a fantastic job helping prepare our A level students for the oral exams.

Mrs McMahon has been with us since Christmas and has done a great job. We wish her luck as she moves to Caerleon School in Sep-tember.

Finally we are very sad to announce the retire-ment of Mrs Symonds who has been working in Stanwell for 23 years. She has been a won-derful teacher and has contributed so much to the department. She has organised numerous trips to Paris as well as travelling annually to Boulogne. She has been to Berlin with the History department, has been on the German exchange many times as well as walking many miles on D of E expeditions. She will be greatly missed by us all.

Cerddoriaeth

The spring and summer terms have, as is cus-tomary, been very busy in the music depart-ment with a great deal happening both in and out of the classroom.

GCSE and A Level Music and Performing Arts students have been working diligently to prepare for assessed performances, controlled assessments, written examinations and the submission of composition portfolios. Practi-cal work from students at all levels has been highly praised by visiting examiners.

The amount of extra hours put in by students in devotion to their studies has been stagger-ing and we are hoping for some fabulous re-sults in August.

Junior Production - Lion King Jnr

The end of term would not be the same with-out the traditional Junior Musical! This year, students in Year 8 and 9 were given the chance to tread the boards in a spectacular sell-out production of ‘Lion King Jnr’.

As usual, the production was a massive team effort with staff from all departments coming together to support a cast, crew and orchestra of 300 pupils to produce a truly spectacular run of final performances. A special mention must go to the talented staff of the DT and Maintenance departments who created truly stunning masks and remarkable props (including a life size elephant!) .

The casting process began in March with Mu-sical Director Miss Ghazi-Torbati and Direc-tor Mr Sullivan having the difficult decision

of allocating the many roles. After extensive deliberations Kaitlin Daly (Year 9) and Harri-son Shaw were cast as younger Nala and Simba and younger Simba, with Emily McConnon (Year 9) and George Jones

(Year 9) being cast as older Nala and Simba, Ophelia Scott (Year 8) was cast as Rafiki.

The orchestra was made up of pupils in Year 7-10 who tack-led the challenging score which includes famous numbers

such as Circle of Life and Can you feel the love tonight.

Despite being a ‘Junior’ version of the sell out West End production, the demands of the show are no less taxing and, as usual, pupils rose to the challenge of this ambitious project with spectacular results and several standing ova-tions! There were so many stand out perfor-mances (far too many to name individually!),

The event also featured song and dance num-bers from the Year 9 and 10 Performing Arts groups and a performance of songs from Les Miserables and Chicago by the newly formed Show Choir. The event was hugely successful, many thanks and congratulations to all students

who were involved!

MAT Orchestra Course

On 18th June the Music department welcomed 40 young musicians from our partner Primary schools to Stanwell to take part in an all day orchestra course in which they performed 3 challenging classical works, including an ex-tract from Beethoven’s 5th Symphony! The day

culminated in a short concert to showcase their achieve-ments which was met with rapturous ap-

plause by the invited audience. Well done to all students who took part in the event.

Goodbye & Good Luck Year 13!

It is with great sadness that we bid our out-going Year 13 cohort (some of whom are pic-tured above) a fond farewell. They have all made stellar contributions to musical life at the school through their involvement in pro-ductions, ensembles, concerts and music tours, and have been an absolute delight to teach.

Many of the students leave us to follow spe-cialist degree courses in the arts at some of the most prestigious universities and conserva-toires in the UK. We are sure you all have fantastic futures ahead - please keep in touch!

Rotary Concert

Stanwell had the pleasure of hosting the annu-al concert held by the Rotary Club of Penarth on May 21st.

The Brass Band performed three items: a traditional march Slaidburn, followed by Lament featuring Year 13 instrumentalist Peter McDonough finishing of with Take That’s Rule the World. Over £700 was raised for the nominated charity ‘Supporting Young Carers’.

Award Ceremony

Many students have represented the music department through their performances at award ceremonies throughout the year.

Rhodri Jones (Year 13) and Rebecca Thompson (Year 13) per formed instru-mental and vocal items in the A Level cer-tificate presentation ceremony at the start of the spring term. The returning students pre-sent at the ceremony were impressed and touched by the quality of their performanc-es.

In the main school awards ceremony that took place on Wednesday 26th June, flautist and recipient of the Ann Johnson memorial cup Huw Boucher (Year 7) performed a superb rendition of Kern’s Smoke Gets in Your Eyes while vocalist and recipient of the Sixth Form Music award Alasdair Cavaye (Year 13) per formed a moving interpretation of Some Enchanted Evening. Both items were extremely well received by the audience in the packed auditorium.

Deciding the recipients of the music awards is always a challenge for staff due to the great number of talented musicians at the school who show a great deal of commit-ment to the arts, both in and out of school.

Eisteddfod 2015

The Music department thoroughly enjoys sup-porting the Welsh department through con-tributing to the annual Eisteddfod.

Over 60 competitors entered the various mu-sic competitions which featured a diverse range of performances; from songs from the shows to classical to pop.

The event provided a great platform for stu-dents to showcase their individual musical talents and the standard was so high, we are sure the task of singling out a winner must have been very difficult indeed!

“...we are sure the task of singling our a winner must’ve been very difficult in-deed!”

Music

African Drumming Workshops

On Monday 23rd March we welcomed Phelps Music to the school to deliver African Drum-ming sessions to musicians in Year 8, 9 and 10. Each group had the opportunity to use au-thentic African instruments with the sessions each culminating in a group composition, au-dio of which is available on the Phelps Music website (www.phelpsmusic.co.uk). The work produced by students was highly impressive and all students enjoyed the day immensely.

Year 5 Product Jingle Workshop

The department was delighted to support the Year 5 Enterprise day in which students de-signed and marketed their own personalised mirrors. Students took part in workshops to compose jingles for their product—all were so well written and catchy, and the visiting stu-dents were an absolute joy to work with.

Instrumental ,Vocal & Digital Music Lessons

Academic Year 2014/15 Every September, peripatetic music teachers hold a meeting so that existing and potential learners can sign up for lessons – this year, the meeting is scheduled to take place on:

SEPTEMBER 8TH IN THE SCHOOL AUDITORIUM at 2.00pm

Interested pupils should excuse themselves from lessons period 6 and report to the audi-torium. They will also be given the oppor-tunity to meet up with the peripatetic teach-ers who are from CAVMS, Cardiff and the Vale County Music Service and Reid’s Dig-ital Music. It is important that everyone in-terested in receiving tuition via the school attends this meeting; it may not be possible to sign up so easily at a later date. We advise that the decision to have vocal or instrumental lessons is discussed carefully at home. There is a cost attached to lessons; this is dependent on the lesson length and group size; this information will be availa-ble from instrumental teachers. Bills for tui-tion are then sent out at the end of every term. For further information please see Miss Lomas or a member of the music team.

Girls’ Basketball

The girls have had a fantastic season this year competing in the new South East Wales Girls Basketball league that was set up in Decem-ber. The league was split up into two catego-ries, Years 7-9 and Years 10-11. All year groups were highly successful and played against many teams in the area such as Cow-bridge, St Cyres, Cwm Rhymni and St Rich-ard Gwyn. Their commitment and enthusiasm in participating and improving their skills has been outstanding and all girls have worked extremely hard to obtain numerous victories against these teams.

The Year 10 and 11s were entered into the South Wales Basketball Championships host-ed by Cardiff City’s House of Sport in No-vember. Here they played against a number of teams in the Vale of Glamorgan and achieved 1st place in the regional qualifiers. They then went on to obtain 3rd place in the finals of this competition in January. All girls thor-oughly enjoyed the day and were compliment-ed on their high standard of basketball by many coaches who observed their matches.

Mr I Summerfield

There has been a high level of interest in girls’ basketball from Year 7 and 8 this year and many players show who show considera-ble promise for their years ahead competing in the league. Special mention goes to Emily Skinner, Carmela Hermogeno, Cora Wall (Year 10) and Niamh Sultana (Year 7) who have been selected to represent the Welsh U16s and U14s girls’ squads this year. Well done girls!

A special good luck also goes to Emily Skin-ner who will be competing in the U16s Girls’ Basketball FIBA European Champion-ships in Andorra in July. Emily was also cho-

sen as one of the ‘superstar 5’ players of the tournament and received Cardiff City football tickets.

Athletics

Many pupils from across the year groups have taken part in athletics competition throughout the summer season. There have been a number of good individual results and team results in the knock out cup.

“outdoor activities weekend”

Mr I Summerfield

Wimbledon On July 1st 8 members of the senior tennis team and Mr Summerfield and Mrs Hunter went to Wimbledon to watch Day 3 of the ten-nis. On the hottest day of the year, we saw Gri-gor Dimitrov, Maria Sharapova, Kevin An-derson and Venus Williams. A great day was had by all and we even managed a group photo on Murray Mound.

Storey Arms The PE department ran another successful trip to the Storey Arms Centre, an outdoor activi-ties weekend at the beginning of June.

The Year 9 trip consisted of 50 pupil who were able to experience a range of activities from gorge walking to caving in a variety of challenging settings. Located in the heart of the Brecon Beacons national park all pu-pils had to overcome a series of challenges which were designed to build teamwork skills, develop confidence and create a sense of achievement. All pupils enjoyed learning from their instructors in depth knowledge which had links to science, ge-ography, history and maths, as well as de-veloping their physical abilities under the watchful eyes of their expert leaders. A great time was had by all.

Welsh Baccalaureate Individual Investiga-tions

A record number of students have opted to complete an investigation in to a range of top-ics relating to either Psychology or Health and Social care. As a requirement of the investiga-tion the students need to compare Wales with another country. Some of the investigations have focused on the cultural differences when diagnosing mental illness. The students have reported finding this an interesting topic area

and are looking forward to the A2 Psychology course, during which we get to grips with cultural differences in more detail.

AS Psychology

In lessons this term, students are received tast-er sessions in the topics they will be studying next year. Together with Health and Social Care students, they will be learning about some of the key issues surrounding psychiat-ric problems and their diagnosis, considering media portrayal of these illnesses and possible causes and treatments.

A2 Psychology

The department bids farewell to our A2 stu-dents this term. They have worked exception-ally hard and we are sure that they will be awarded results to be proud of in August.

We wish them well in their future endeavours.

Psychology Award

Congratulations go to Kayley Birch-Hurst on winning the Psychology Award. Throughout her two years on the psychology course Kayley has been mature, thoughtful and thought-provoking in lessons.

She has performed at a consistently high level, and demonstrated a real talent for tackling sen-sitive and controversial topics in an academic manner worthy of an undergraduate student. We are going to miss having her in lessons.

Staff

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Bowditch for her work this year in the Psychology and Health and Social Care depart-ment. The students and staff have expressed their gratitude for all the time she has given up to help.

We wish her well in her new position as Head of Health and Social Care at Hereford Sixth

“Congratulations go to Kayley Birch-Hurst on winning the Psychology Award.”

Carol Evans RE Award 2015

Georgina Bartlett of Year 12 received the above award at the Stanwell Award Ceremo-ny on 24th June. Georgina is an outstanding student whose essay responses have been of a consistently high standard throughout this academic year. We look forward to reading her A2 essays next year.

Goodbye to Year 13

The department bid a fond farewell to Year 13 who have been a wonderful group of stu-dents demonstrating a genuine interest in the subject. We asked them to comment on what they had enjoyed about their studies in reli-gion and ethics and their responses highlight-ed the enthusiasm for discussion based activ-ities and challenges. One student comment-ed, “Studying RE at Stanwell has helped me become confident in developing my own opinions and decisions in every day life and important issues involving people on a world wide scale.”

The class of 2015: Emma Bright, Ellie Mun-ro, Alexandra Ward, Tomos Derrick, Joel Freebury-Jones, Anna Kinnersley, Jacob Lewis, Katie Alstead and Patrick Charleson.

RE pupils using their talents Lowena Diment (pictured below) has had her po-em “What does religion mean to you” published in a book entitled “Spirited Words” after entering a competition organized by United Press.

Lowena is a talented RE stu-dent and the full text of her poem can be seen in the RE area of the school website. This year, RE Club wanted to support a local char-ity. During Open Evening both parents and pupils were invited to vote and the winner was Morel Court Care Home in Penarth. Since then the pupils of RE Club have worked hard to think of ways for pupils to get involved with Morel Court’s resi-dents. During the summer term a visit involving members of RE Club and Miss Ghazi Torbati’s Year 9 performing Arts class was arranged so that the residents could enjoy tea, cake and entertain-ment; all provided by a collaboration between RE and Music. Tom Burge from Year 8 (pictured above) has been a committed and enthusiastic member of RE club this year.

“In RE we have interesting and thought provoking discussions about real life topics.”

Mrs J Skilton

What does religion mean to you?

To me it is to keep an open mind To be faithful to friends, loyal and kind.

Gwyddoniaeth

Dr H Roberts

It has been a busy and successful year for the Science department. Pupils in Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 have taken their external examinations, and we wish them the best of luck. We say a sad farewell and good luck to all the Year 13 pupils as they go on to pastures new, but look forward to welcoming back many of the current Year 11 pupils for AS Levels next year.

Applied Science It has been a positive year for Year 11 Applied scientists with the majority completing coursework in plenty of time for the May deadline. This has allowed almost everyone to achieve the level 2 (GCSE equivalent) qualifications on offer to them. Year 10 have a hard act to follow, but they are currently on track to be equally successful. The Year 13 class had all of their coursework sent off, and we wish them every success on results day. In other news Year 12 begin the most exciting part of their course as they research their individual project over the summer holidays - a daunting task as there can be no help from their friends! Each pupil has to design and investigate a project of their own, as well as choosing which two of the voluntary modules they would like to complete. The whole department wishes them every success. Biology We continue to be very proud of the efforts of all GCSE and A Level Biology classes as they have prepared for examinations this year, good luck to you all when you get your results. Particular congratulations are due to Emma

Donovan who has been awarded the Kathleen Evans Biology Prize for the best results at AS Level, she thoroughly deserved the excellent results she gained last year. Milissa Sorenson will also be looking forward to the summer as she has been awarded a prestigious Nuffield Bursary. She will be working with the entomology department of the National Museum, we hope you enjoy your time there. Chemistry This has once again been a very busy year for pupils studying Chemistry. Many pupils sat external examinations in both January and June, and we wish them all the best in the summer. If the results reflect the commitment to their studies then they will be very successful. Pupils in Years 10 and 11 completed their controlled assessment tasks and should be commended on their efforts.

The practical aspect of the course, while challenging, has been enjoyed by all pupils. Pictured are Ruby Bollington and Isabelle Hodgson car rying out a titration, and Owen Day and Alex Hodges investigating the reaction of a metal with an acid.

Many of the A Level Chemists have performed very well in their modules throughout the year, with special congratulations to Daniel Cerasale who has been awarded the Winifred Bevan Prize for A Level Chemistry for his outstanding achievements in theoretical and practical Chemistry.

Physics The effort and commitment of pupils from all Key Stages should be commended this year. Good luck to all the pupils who will receive their results in the summer, hopefully all your hard work will be rewarded. Congratulations to Izaak Lee for being awarded the Key Stage 4 Physics prize, while Jack Davies was awarded the pr ize for Key

The eclipse in March provided an awe inspiring opportunity for pupils to use different methods to view the eclipse safely, including

using pin-hole cameras, eclipse glasses and our telescope. Pictured above are Year 13 pupils Jack Davies, Matthew Holder and Sam Laity who helped to monitor the progress of the eclipse, giving pupils and staff a chance to view it safely. This was a great opportunity to view a solar eclipse as the next one is in 2026!

St David’s Day 2015

The Welsh department and a selection of Year 7 pupils took part in the St David’s Day parade in Cardiff on Sunday 1st March. The pupils were close to the front of the parade with yel-low and red dragon flags. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the day and soak up the lively atmosphere. The parade finished at Cardiff castle just in time for Welsh cakes be-fore a dramatic change in the weather. The Stanwell school section even appeared on the ITV news.

Eisteddfod results

Years 7 and 8 thoroughly enjoyed the Eistedd-fod on March the 3rd. Many pupils took part in the homework and stage competitions. These included Welsh and French recitation as well as vocal solo, musical theatre and popular mu-sic, dance, instrumental and many others.

Blwyddyn7

Since joining Stanwell School in September, this year group has been remarkable. Their behaviour has been exemplary and their achievements have surpassed all expectations. I do hope you take the time to note the names of the pupils in this newsletter, I am confident that they will be the stars of stage and television in the future!

My favourite memories of Year 7 must be their superb efforts on behalf of our charities, Children in Need and Lepra ( a charity that helps victims of leprosy). They raised literally thousands of pounds, with over £1500 for the Lepra Dance-off alone.

The Christmas Nativity play was a new development and it was a joy to see the efforts to which the pupils went to in order to prepare. Similarly, the Year 7 Concert received great acclaim from the audience and proud parents.

During the inspection week, our pupils showed just how well they perform in Stanwell classrooms. They are an integral part of decision–making in our school and the form representatives worked tirelessly in support of their committees.

The pupils have earned their Summer holidays and I look forward to hearing of their future successes higher up in the school and beyond.

Blwyddyn 10

It has been a busy term for Year 10 pupils,

both in terms of academic challenges and extra

-curricular involvement and we are proud to

look back over a very varied and successful

year. Pupils have had to apply themselves fully

as they prepared for their external GCSE ex-

ams and they have coped admirably with their

external modular examinations. Many have

already completed numerous controlled assess-

ment tasks that contribute to their final GCSE

grades. Good luck to all who have worked so

diligently.

Our pastoral programme has included a varied

and diverse selection of topics and Year 10

pupils have explored themes such as poverty,

homelessness, success, coping with failure,

internet safety, sexual exploitation and alcohol.

We have also had a host of visiting speakers

including Barnardos, various theatre in educa-

tion groups and our police liaison officer, Em-

ma Mudie. Our pupils have responded to some

very thought provoking topics with maturity

and sensitivity and for this they should be con-

gratulated.

Our Military Prep pupils have successfully completed their first year qualification. These pupils have been involved in exciting expedi-tionary/military style exercises whilst also practising their skills of planning and prepar-ing a small expedition, living and cooking in

the field, camouflage and navigation. In addition, the pupils who attend Cardiff & Vale College have successfully completed their first year of their qualification. Our pupils are enrolled on hair and beauty, construction and motor vehi-cle courses and will continue with these studies in Year 11.

As expected, the level of participation in the

Duke of Edinburgh scheme has been impres-

sive. As part of the scheme the pupils have un-

dertaken fundamental first aid training and

most pupils have completed their assessed ex-

pedition. Many pupils in Year 10 have also

been involved in the numerous departmental

trips that have taken place this year.

Blwyddyn 10 Extra curricular activities and indeed home-

work club provision have been well attended

by many Year 10 pupils. These clubs benefit

our pupils immensely and are a source of

great educational and enjoyment for those

involved. A full list of clubs can be found on

our Year 10 Moodle page which is updated

regularly.

A ‘Work Experience Preparation afternoon’

was completed in June and this session ena-

bled pupils to prepare for their placement,

providing essential practical advice about

working with adults whilst also encouraging

the pupils to think about health and safety

implications whilst in the work place.

Work Experience Week

All Year 10 pupils undertook a Work Ex-

perience placement from the 6th- 10th July.

Our pupils conducted themselves with

professionalism and maturity and many

employers spoke highly of the contribu-

tion made over the course of the week.

This experience is most valuable for our

pupils as it provides a platform for them to

develop essential work skills and focus on

their powers of communication in a pro-

fessional environment.

Since Christmas, Year 11 have undertaken GCSE modular examinations, been preparing themselves for the summer GCSE assessments and deciding on their options for September; whether to stay in Stanwell, to study at college or to seek employment. Students have attended the 6th Form Options Evening, intention interviews, assemblies and Induction Day to introduce the new subjects available in the 6th form and the conduct required to excel at AS/A Level. The summer GCSE examinations started on Fri-day 8th May and ended on Monday 22nd June, during which time formal revision sessions were held and other sessions were arranged by various departments in order to consolidate learning and ensure key skills were refreshed immediately prior to the important external exams. Attend-ance at the formal revision sessions was good, which shows the enthusiasm and commitment of Year 11 pupils.

On Tuesday 28th April the MPCT held its annu-al Awards Ceremony. Ten Stanwell Year 11 pu-pils attend MPCT one day a week and study BTEC Public Services, along with many pupils from other schools from Cardiff and The Vale of Glamorgan. The Awards Ceremony was for MPCT’s three South Wales Centres: Cardiff, Rhumney and Bridgend. This makes the achieve-ments of the Stanwell pupils even more prestig-ious. The afternoon started with a fabulous dis-play of PT skills and students on parade, fol-

“Pob lwc i bawb”

Miss L Jenkins & Mr B Crompton

A big thank you to all the Year 11 form repre-sentatives in particular Lily Winnan and Jo-seph Burge on representing Year 11 on the School Council. This has been a very exciting year for Year 11 with regards to their sporting achievements. Several individuals have had great success in their particular fields. Worthy of a special mention is Owen Lloyd who played superbly in the second row for Wales U16 v England

U16. Congratulations to all pupils in Year 11 who have participated in extra-curricular activities this year. 100% of Year 11 pupils have partici-pated in one or more extra–curricular activities.

The Year 11 Moodle pages have been successfully developed and enhanced throughout the year. They have proved to be an invaluable source of information to pupils and parents with details of exam timetables, GCSE re-sits and homework clubs being published there. In particular, key information was communicated to pupils once the GCSEs had commenced and pupils were on study leave. Details of arrangements for results day will be published via Moodle and the school website, so please keep checking for up-dates. You could also follow us on: @StanwellYr11

Indeed, we look forward to results day on Thursday 20th August where we hope that the pupils’ hard work will be suitably rewarded with excellent GCSE grades. We wish our Year 11 students every suc-cess and look forward to seeing many of the pupils return to Year 12. It has been a great year with many fantastic achieve-ments. We wish those not returning to Stanwell the very best of luck in their chosen career paths.

Blwyddyn 12

This has been a crucial term for Year 12 with the students sitting their external AS examina-tions. These began during the week beginning May 11th with the year group starting their study leave May 3rd. Since their return, the students have been focusing on several ele-ments of the Welsh Baccalaureate. Each stu-dent has completed a week of work experi-ence and most have been working with a local employer. This has given them an invaluable insight into the world of work and, hopefully, will have helped to focus their attentions on a possible future career. All have been writing their Individual Investigations; a minimum of 3000 words on an academic topic in which they have a particular interest. A group of ten students took time out from their busy exam timetables to take part in the InterAction Council conference at Newport’s Celtic Man-or. They were able to ask questions of and debate with a group of 25 former world lead-ers including former Prime Ministers and Presidents.

Many students are now starting to consider what path they may take when their time at Stanwell comes to a close next summer. Our pupils are starting to research universities and courses as well as familiarising them-selves with the UCAS application process.

James Brennan of Cardiff University has spoken with the students about 'Life at University' and many parents attended the Higher Education Information Evening, when Ieuan Hopkins from Cardiff Univer-sity guided parents on how they could sup-port their children through the UCAS pro-cess and provided helpful information about student finance. Ieuan’s presentation is available in the 6th Form moodle area along with a great deal of other supporting material.

Head Boy and Head Girl

Appointments With Year 13 leaving to focus on their A Level examinations, this is the time of year when Year 12 students now take their place as the senior pupils in the school. The student senior team and prefect group have been elected. Joshua Lewis and Al-exandra Warren are now Stanwell' s head boy and head girl with William Brown and Ellen Ashton as their depu-ties. 16 prefects were also chosen. W01 Megan Hain recently sang and danced in a showcase for the ‘Superstars in the Making’ theatre group. Sally Jones has been busy fundraising for her visit to Le-sotho this summer. Hannah Sood will shortly be dancing for Performing Arts Academy Wales at Barry Memo. Emily Walters applied to The Guardian to re-view children’s and young adult novels. She has been accepted and is all set to re-view these books for The Guardian on-line website. WO2

Blwyddyn13 The final two terms are always busy for Year 13 and this year was no exception. The vast majority of students in the year group have been working tirelessly to complete course-work pieces and, in particular all aspects of the Welsh Baccalaureate, before timetabled les-sons ceased. It has been a encouraging to see that their efforts have been duly rewarded with the qualification featuring in over 50% of of-fers from the students’ first choice universi-ties.

163 students applied to UCAS and most have now confirmed their firm and insurance choic-es. Indeed, 5 students have received offers form Oxbridge. Congratulations to all those who have received offers and good luck in meeting the requirements.

Guest speakers from various universities have been advising the students on different aspects of university life. James Kerr of Swansea gave a presentation on the realities of universi-ty life and Alex Kennedy of the University of South Wales spoke to the year group about finance and budgeting. Cardiff’s Iwan Hop-kins gave advice on interview technique and Julian Gould-Williams of Cardiff’s Business School allowed the year group to gain experi-ence of a typical university lecture. All ses-sions were extremely informative and, at times, very entertaining.

Students who wish to enter the world of work after leaving Stanwell have also been receiv-ing specialist advice. Local businessman Carl-michael Reardon-James, a volunteer business ambassador with Careers Wales has been tak-ing sessions with those seeking employment on where to look for work in their field of in-

terest, writing CVs, interview technique and arranging work experience with local firms. The students found these sessions very useful and informative.

Year 13 students have also been contributing to worthy causes this year. They turned out in droves to donate blood allowing Stanwell to be the first school in Wales to host the Blood Ser-vice for a day and many also provided swabs to be used in an important Meningococcal study following a presentation by Sam Rose of the University of Wales hospital.

Rebecca Te Water Naude organised a very successful hustings event for sixth form stu-dents in the period leading up to this year’s gen-eral election. Local candidates from the 5 main political parties answered questions posed by our sixth form students on a variety of topics from lowering the voting age to class barriers within the high echelons of British politics.

We celebrated the achievements of the year group at the Valedictory dinner held at Holland House Hotel, Cardiff on Friday July 3rd. All remains is to wish our students the best of luck for results day on Thursday, August 13th and also for the future.
