I recently visited a team in Estonia who was on their outreach for our Discipleship Training School (DTS). After the visit I realized again why the outreach is such an important part of the DTS. The students have had three months of amazing teaching that has changed their lives in many ways, but still they learn more during the outreach, and their faith grows to a deeper level. The outreach has many purposes. We find it is important that the students go to a country with a different culture from their own, to broaden their worldview and start to see the world more and more with God’s eyes. However, the most important purpose is to practise what they have learnt and see that it works in real life. That is why they learn so much, because there is no better way to learn than to put what you have heard into practice. The teaching moves from theory to real- ity, from head to heart, and habits that truly serve God are formed. Some people come back to Sweden with life-changing experiences and they have seen God do amazing things, but still think that things like that only happen in countries far away. I wonder if this is because we don’t really dare to test our faith in the same way when we are home? It is often easier to practise your faith in new ways when you are in a place where everything around you is already new, but in fact you don’t have to be in a new culture to do that.

A DTS is a perfect place to practise your faith and see it grow. At YWAM Restenäs we now have three DTS’s: the classic DTS in September, the Korean DTS in March and the Mobile DTS which start-ed in January this year with a focus on Sweden and Swedish churches. We took the Mobile DTS on the road to five cities and worked with different churches around Sweden. The classes were open for everyone and we also ran youth events and had evangelism together with the church during the weekends so the students were challenged to try new things and could see that God is also at work here in Sweden. We are looking forward to next year’s Mobile DTS when we can do it again. Until then, I want to challenge myself and others to dare to take new steps in our faith wherever we are, because then we will grow.

Isak Oscarsson, School leader Mobile Discipleship Training School

“In the spring our church had the privilege of hosting the Mobile DTS from YWAM Restenäs. The theme for the week was, “How to read and understand the Bible”. It was enriching, to say the least, to listen to the Bible teacher and to take part in what the class had to offer. Some of our church mem-bers sat in on the Bible teaching and really learned a lot. One of the highlights was a morning when we worshipped and prayed using the Word of God and the different expressions in it.

Something else that made an impression was the students’ hunger to learn and their willingness to serve. They were counting on God in all situations, and eager to help in many dif-ferent ways in the church. We were blessed by them and we also got to be a blessing. I really want to encourage more churches to open up for the blessing it is to host YWAM Restenäs Mobile DTS.”

Am I called?1 Corinthians 12:28 NIV“And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues.”

A couple of weeks ago Tove and I went to an after-work activity which EKG (Ericssons Chris-tian Group) hosted in Gothenburg. Tove shared how ALL of creation was reconciled through Christ; ALL. (Col. 1:20)EKG is a group of “normal” engineers walk-ing with Jesus. These engineers are created in the image of God, with talents and gifts to be engineers. In the same way God created the men who are renovating Björkbacken here at Restenäs where I am writing this. Are they called to be painters, carpenters or engineers? I cannot answer for everyone of them, but I definitely be-lieve that God is calling people to “normal jobs” in Sweden to expand His kingdom here. Think about how all kinds of different inventions have

helped in the expansion of God’s kingdom. And what a blessing it is to have a house to live in! If we dig a little bit deeper into 1 Corinthians 12:28 and think about what it means to do miracles, to heal, to help, to guide and to speak different tongues, then I think we will find most of our “normal jobs” of today in there. Jobs that God has chosen and equipped us for. Christian Othzén, YWAM Restenäs staff

The question: Is it worth it?Sa-wa-di-kaa, or Hi there! I am writing to you from a wonderfully sunny and unmerci-fully hot Chiang Mai, Thailand. I moved here four months ago with my husband and two boys. Right now we’re looking for a perma-nent house to live in. We have been sent out from YWAM Restenäs, my home church out-side Örnsköldsvik, three churches in California and a number of friends who believe in what we do.The sting of loneliness, leaving all your friends, extended family and everything familiar, can be overwhelming. But this is all diminished by having my family with me. What a privilege it is to do this together with them! However, moving an entire family is also a bigger project. No longer does life fit into a single back-pack, like when I was 19. And finding a school for our two boys is not a simple task; neither is schooling free as it is in Sweden. And how do you tell your children that they won’t see their best friends for two and a half years, or that they won’t be able to celebrate Christmas with their grand-ma and grandpa? That “our” last house we lived in back in Sweden is no longer “ours”? At times, it’s tempting to think, “Is it worth it all?” It takes a lot longer for one’s soul to land than the plane that got us here. That’s when we remind ourselves, and our boys, why we’re here: because many children in this country are too poor to go to school, because millions of people still have not heard about Jesus, but above all, because Jesus spoke to us as a family about moving out here. The needs are obvious, they’re everywhere, and they’re overwhelming. But Jesus’ specific calling to each believer is some-thing totally different. It’s not based on guilt or on the amount of fruit we can measure. It’s always and only focused on each one of us following Jesus wherever He leads us.When we do that, as Habakkuk said, “...the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” And the Jesus who said, “Go” also said, “I am with you until the end of time.” Now, that answers the question. A group of former YWAMers.I think God has a special attraction to cities. There is something about cities that God is so in love with. There is cre-ativity, joy and diversity, among other things, which God loves. But there is also a lot about a city that breaks the heart of God. The “Gothenburg Tribe” is about letting Gothenburg know who God is, and also letting ourselves know more of Him. Maybe we are starting out on a small scale, but who didn’t?The vision of YWAM still burns in most of us older “YWAMers”. To be encour-aged and to be lifted up in our faith is

often reason enough to hold to the vision. Letting people know who God is, is always reason enough. I don’t have a defined purpose for the “Gothenburg Tribe”. But I know that Jesus is there for us, and YWAM has been a great tool for me in figuring that out. So why not do it in a city like Gothenburg?

Are you interested in working among people who have not yet heard about God? Come and join “Share It”! “Share it” is a nine-month internship programme which gives you the opportunity to serve, experience and learn by working alongside our long-term field workers. The programme starts September 9th with two introduc-tory weeks and ends back in Sweden for some days of de-briefing in June. This year we have had three girls working in North India. There they have been working in a slum area, amongst children in an unreached people group and amongst refugees.

“I did my School of Intercessory Prayer (SOIP) last autumn and I am very happy I did. I had a lot of unan-swered questions, es-pecially about prayer,

intercession and spiritual warfare. During the SOIP I found the answers to those questions, as well as a greater understanding of the im-portance of interceding for friends, family and nations. We’re all called to pray.”Anna Svantesson, Sweden, SOIP 2012

“Through this six-month journey I experienced the fullness of what it means to be a disciple. The speak-ers had both passionate testimonies and teaching

that really set me on fire and caused my rela-tionship with God to grow in a big and new way. I have discovered the truth about who I am as a child of God, and I’ve got a greater understand-ing of the God I serve.” Chris Brooks. Canada, DTS 2012

“I am very glad I decided to be part of the School of Communication Foun-dations (SCF). I learned a lot about who I am as a person and what I have to offer to others. I also became more aware of what I communicate to oth-ers through my actions and my words. My favourite thing about doing the SCF in Sweden was that even though I was in school, God was a big part of everything we did. Our staff would encourage us to seek direction from Him.Stephanie Zepeda, Honduras, SCF 2012
