The Perfect Dog
“Stop making that noise!” Anna yelled at her brother. Anna’s brother, Sam, was six years old. Anna was three years older. Sam often got onAnna’s nerves. Right now, he was trying to whistle. It sounded like a mix of spitting andhissing. They were riding in the car with their mother. They were going to the pound. Anna was thinking about dogs. Their old dog died a few weeks ago. Every night since,Anna had cried herself to sleep. She missed Chief so much. He was one of their family.Chief and her mother walked Anna and Sam to school each day. Everyone who passed bywould say, “What a handsome dog!” While Anna did her homework, Chief would curl up ather feet. He slept at the foot of her bed each night. Chief was devoted to Anna and herfamily. Yesterday, Anna’s mother said, “It’s time for us to get a new dog. I know how muchyou miss Chief, Anna. Chief would want us to give a good home to another dog. A newdog will help you get over Chief.” So now they were on their way to the animal shelter. Anna’s mother parked the car infront of a large, red brick building. As they walked in the front door, they heard dogsbarking. Anna walked right up to the woman at the desk. She said, “We’re here to get a dog.” The woman laughed and said, “Well, I have a paper for your mother to fill out. Whenshe’s finished, I’ll call Roger. He will show you the dogs.” Roger led them to the huge room where the dogs were kept. The floor was bareconcrete. The room was divided into two long aisles. Each aisle had a row of large wirecages. Each cage held a barking dog. The sound of so much barking hurt Anna’s ears. Asthey passed each cage, the dog inside would jump. It would wag its tail fiercely and barklouder. Some of the dogs were large, and some were small. Some were cute, and somewere ugly. Anna felt sorry for all the dogs. “I would hate to spend all day in a cage,” Annathought. “They all need a home.” Near the end of the first aisle, Anna stopped in front of a cage. Inside was a large dogthat looked like a husky. It had thick black and white fur. Its tail was curled and waggingback and forth. The dog wasn’t barking. It just looked at them. It had big brown eyes thatseemed to say, “Please take me.” Anna put her hand on the cage by the dog’s face. Thedog licked her hand. Sam put his hand next to Anna’s. The dog licked Sam’s hand, too. “He’s beautiful, isn’t he, Anna?” her mother said. “Yes,” Anna replied. “I think he really likes you, Sam. What do you think of him?” “He’s perfect,” Sam answered.
