editor’s note

Break out the sunscreen and let’s get ready to rock. Now that we’ve had a taste of the warm weather, let’s hope it’s here to stay. Summer is about unleashing your inner bombshell and bronzing yourself the healthiest way possible. No, we aren’t advocating tanning beds, but instead, throw on your favourite summer dress, grab a tube of sunscreen and lounge with a pair of shades, patio or poolside. Sincerely,

Sharp The Book for Men Spring/Summer Launch Inside the newly renovated Arcadian Loft, Sharp for Men held an event for the launch of their biannual spring/summer style man-ual. And it was just as good as the magazine. The 400 plus guests enjoyed their premium drinks from Glenlivet, Absolut Elyx and Peroni, with food provided by Oliver & Bonacini. Walter’s Shoe Care did some buffing and polishing, while

Mankind Grooming Studio and American Crew gave a little hair trim. The Editor’s Lounge included a sampling of high-end timepieces (Chanel to Concord) and the environment showcased the latest in men’s spring fashions from Strellson, BOSS and Bugatti. And how well-dressed were the men? Let’s say they must already be fans of the book.

A Massive Party

AGO’s Massive Party doesn’t do the term ‘massive’ justice. Held at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the fundraising event targets the u p - a n d - c o m i n g creative class with a wall-to-wall party. The main floor contained a ‘photo booth’ (not for Facebok), the floor below held – basketball – court

SNAP! Toronto

The AIDS Community of Toronto (ACT) held its 11thannual photographic event to raise funds for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS in the community. Held at the National Ballet School of Canada, the night included live and silent auctions, a photo competition, and half-naked models of the male variety. The (a)rousing evening raised almost $300,000 for ACT, with the option of – non attendees – donating directly to the ACT (www.actoronto.org). Now, how much money would’ve been raised if the models not only lost their shirts, but also their pants...?

BEAUTY

Bare Love Beauty’s creator, Rebecca Cook, has always had a passion for natural oils. Over years of watching her mother use them religiously as well as using and combining them herself, she transitioned her life’s passion into creating a product line that is all-natural

and derived solely from oils. Cook’s knowledge grew over the years of working with different brands and product lines. This helped create a beauty line based on exactly what she would want to use for herself, family and friends. With her number one supporter and unconditional motivator being her husband and her mother, she found the courage and confidence both at home and in herself to create products that contain exactly what she had been searching for. With a Degree in Communications at The University of Ottawa she was able to learn and understand people, making it a great starting point in creating products that people would

want. Packaging had always been important for Cook when creating her products. Airlift pumps were a great way of keeping her products free of germs, making it important to ensure the products

Style Empire

Page 13: Style Empire: Volume 1, Issue 2 - Summer 2012

kept germs and preservatives out. She also wanted to create something small and light for less clutter in the cabinets and for easy storage. When Cook brought

her idea to the chemist’s lab, they worked together and thought of ways to blend and create products that will work effectively. After eight hours the products also began to provide a skin barrier using oils such as vanilla, cocoa, and black current. Rebecca tested each ingredient separately first, then through friends and family, giving them samples to try at home and to give away for others to try as well. This allowed her to know what worked and what didn’t and receiving constructive feedback made it helpful in creating the products that worked best for every skin and hair type. Bare Love Beauty boasts 100% natural ingredients using exotic oils from Brazil that can be used on all skin typesallowing the oils to act as a balancing agent. The hair, body, and face products all have a different all-natural and light sent that releases itself throughout the day. It is recommended to use a small amount of product, for the night cream Cook suggests to apply it nightly for more effective results. Cook explains how Bare Love Beauty night cream will minimize the dark circles and bags under your eyes that you can wake up with and keeps your skin at a balanced state. The body cream is an all over cream that is great for after showering, and after shaving to minimize

those pesky razor bumps and burns. When using the hair products be sure to use them once or twice a week on all hair types to bring out natural hair colour and add shine. These all-natural and silicon-free products are great to use before shampooing to feel revived and the styling products help nourish your hair both before and after straightening, curling, and blow-drying hair. Cook uses Bare Love Beauty on her face, body and hair. She found herself loving the products all throughout her pregnancy and explains how the beauty line prepares you for your day and gives you an instant connection to your skin by hydrating and moisturizing it. Cook’s dream is to continue to developing and expanding her product line to baby care products and colour lip products explaining that her products are all about simplifying and getting back to the roots of beauty and health and through Bare Love Beauty, Cook creates her products to fuel everyone’s beauty regime naturally.

Releasing Your

Known for her beauty and libidinous charms, the Bombshell’s allure is more

than skin deep.

Summer is nearly upon us. With warmer weather and longer days comes a reinvigorated sense of wanting to look our best. We head to the malls, stock up at Sephora and hit the gym in a concentrated effort to be fabulous. Summer is often a time of reinvention. Life surrounds us in full bloom and motivates us to look and feel beautiful, inside and out. To me, summer is a perfect time to let down your tresses, perfect your pout and release your inner Bombshell! Not only do I advocate adopting a Bombshell appearance, but also a Bombshell state of mind. How does one gain Bombshell status, you may ask? Allow me to explain. The Bombshell archetype is a perennially lush, beautiful, sexy and complex female figure. The Bombshell look, ripe with beauty and glamour, is so classic, timeless and utterly adored that it will endure to the end of time. It’s all big hair, full lips, doe eyes, dewy skin, vulnerability and allure. It’s the ultimate embodiment of femininity, and men and women alike fall victim to its charms.

Inner Bombshell

Text: Christina Oreskovich

The aesthetic of the Bombshell is rather precise. Long, tousled locks and clean, well-scrubbed skin are hallmarks to be sure. Classic, fitted fashions and sky-high stilettos are also key elements of the Bombshell design. And of course, smoky eyes and nude lips, à la Brigitte Bardot, tend to complete the look. The Bombshell cares very much about how she looks, but not for reasons that are entirely vain. The Bombshell wants to share her beauty and vivacity with others. She is not just another pretty face – she is a loving creature, full of life and curious about the world around her. Says Laren Stover, author of The Bombshell Manual of Style, the Bombshell is ‘never bored and therefore, never boring’. Real life bombshells include Marilyn Monroe, the previously mentioned Brigitte Bardot, Dorothy Dandridge and modern-day Sophia Vergara.

Of course, Bombshells come in all shapes and sizes. What unites them is a desire to celebrate their femininity. And thus, to take this full circle – I invite you to bring out the Bombshell in you, this summer. Let your tresses down, perfect your pout, strut a little when you walk and turn the world on with your smile. Sport the highest heels you own, wear the lacy dress you’ve been dying to show off and treat yourself to a manicure. There is nothing wrong with having a sense of self-pride, glamming yourself up and cultivating your own Bombshell persona. Be your most perennially lush, beautiful, sexy and complex self. And in addition to looking gorgeous, be beautiful on the inside! Practice kindness and compassion. Listen to others, give them the benefit of the doubt and try to brighten their day. Take heed of my advice and I guarantee you’ll have bona fide Bombshell status in no time.

Although SPF is most often associated to sunscreen for the skin, what many of us tend to forget is the importance of protecting your hair from the UV rays as well. Manscaping 101

We’ve all seen the 40 Year Old Virgin waxing scene where a sea of chest hair is torn from Steve Carell’s body, although smiley faces across the chest aren’t common practice, waxing and hair removal should be.

With beach weather right around the corner, more and more men consider the idea of body hair removal. While the choice to remove body hair is yours and yours alone, we’ve seen an increasing trend of men either trimming or waxing excess hair. We’ve broken the body up into 4 key areas that are often treated: chest, stomach, back and downtown (you know, those nether regions).

CHESTYour best bet: Trimming or Waxing

While Burt Reynolds may have been a sex icon in the 1970’s, we aren’t seeing many men rocking the ‘70’s style shag carpet on their chest. Although this area is the most accepted area for body hair, you can get away with keeping the area neatly trimmed with a small pair of scissors. If you prefer to be completely smooth, we recommend waxing.

STOMACHYour best bet: Waxing

What woman doesn’t love a furry stomach? Actually, out of the women surveyed, the stomach was tied for the least attractive place for a man to have hair on his body. Often, when dealing with stomach hair, you’re also dealing with chest hair and just like the first time you shaved your face you don’t want to end up at the beach with an uneven hairline between your chest and stomach, so once you trim down your chest we suggest getting waxing done professionally the first time at least so the removal is even.

BACKYour best bet: Waxing

It would seem only natural that the other area tied for first in the least attractive area for excess body hair would be the hardest and most awkward area for you to reach yourself - the back. Chances are, you’ll want to consult a professional for this one. Afterall, there is nothing as unsexy as saying, “Hey babe, can you help me shave my back?”

DOWNTOWNYour best bet: Waxing

When most people think about male grooming and “manscaping”, this is the first area that pops into everyone’s minds and with good reason. This area is often protected more than the Pentagon and the thought of a blade coming anywhere near it is nothing short of terrifying. Shaving is an option but we wouldn’t recommend it because it

may cause razorburn and ingrown hairs. We suggest you take either the trimming path or go the waxing route, although most will go for the option of trimming. A small pair of scissors or lightweight razor can be used to trim and thin out the area without too much fear of any accidents. If you do however decide to give waxing a shot, we don’t recommend doing it yourself and would highly suggest seeing a professional to avoid any….”damages”.

Now we know body hair grooming is nothing new, but not everyone knows the necessary facts or steps prior to being waxed. We consulted Mary Miljan of Aroma Wellness Clinic and Spa in Toronto for a few pre-waxing tips and some answers to common questions.

A few quick tips for before and after getting waxed:

• Hair growth should be at least 1/4”• Take Tylenol 30-45 minutes before your appointment (optional but if it’s your first time, it’s probably a good idea)• Stay out of the sun 24 hours before and after waxing service• Avoid exercise and extreme heat (sauna, hot tub) 24 hours after waxing service

Q: Are there any health precautions to keep in mind? A: It is important that waxing is never done on clients taking Accutane and is not recommended for clients taking Retinol A, or other types of skin thinning acne medications. If medication is being taken, consult your dermatologist prior to waxing.

Q: How should I take care of my skin after waxing?

A: After waxing, avoid tanning, extended sun exposure, scented lotions, perfumes, or colognes for 48 hours. You will also want to avoid hot showers or baths, sauna and steam room use immediately following the service. This can traumatize & burn new skin.

Don’t use deodorant, perfumes or alcohol-based products for at least 24 hours after waxing. It is recommended to use sun protection for the 1st day after the waxing to avoid any hyper-pigmentation.

Q: How often do I need to get waxed?

A: Typically you will need to get waxed every 4 to 6 weeks...go any sooner and you will remove some of the hairs but not all of them, which will throw off your waxing schedule and will not give you clean wax results. Let it grow too long and you may need to trim but this will also be a little bit more sensitive. But still it depends on how fast your hair grows. That varies from person to person.

Back in 2004, Quebec born jewelry designer, Caroline Neron, founded her company, Bijoux Caroline Neron,.Eight years later, Neron has over 150 staff and her business continues to flourish with $10 million in annual sales. With a goal of expansion beyond Quebec and the world of online shopping, Neron plans to open stores in Ontario come 2013. Neron’s collections have garnered worldwide recognition. R&B sensation, Usher, commissioned the designers showpieces for the North American portion of his 2010 “OMG” tour. Canadian singer Mia Martina also wore custom made pieces for her 2012 JUNO performance. Neron tells us, “In my head it is and always has been clear, with no

hesitation. This is not something I would love to be, this is what I am”. It’s with this attitude that she continues to wow audiences at Montreal Fashion Week, not to mention her awe-inspiring 2011 debut at Toronto Fashion Week, with a collection of draped and cascading jewels that stole the hearts of local fashion enthusiasts. Not only is Caroline a talented jewelry designer, but this triple threat is also well versed in acting and singing. She has appeared in numerous French television series and films such as Diva and 3 Saisons as well as recorded and released out 3 full length albums.

N The future for Neron looks bright and promising, as she has began to expand her jewelry empire internationally in France, where the couture fashion scene began. It’ has been a long 8 years for this talented Canadian, from starting out in her kitchen to becoming the most talked about show at Toronto Fashion Week. It’s safe to say that regardless of her vocation be it singing or jewelry, Neron puts her heart and soul into everything she does and we couldn’t be more proud of this great Canadian success story.

It’s a pretty common dream, standing on stage guitar in hand, thousands of screaming fans. Being on the road with the rock star life you look for two things in your clothing: durability and that rock star personality. Look for muted tones and strong rugged fabrics, subtle military embellishments such as epaulets also add a nice touch of detail. You may not be headlining shows around the country but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress like you are.

ON TOURLive and dress like a rock star, your guitar amp may go to 10 but this look will take you to 11.

With the 2012 Olympics just around the corner, all eyes are set on London, England this Summer, where new venues and developments as well as historic monuments will bring forth a large amount of visitors. For those of you planning on traveling to the British capital, blogger and travel contributor, Nina Akbari has all of the latest and greatest inside-tips.

Where to INDULGE in Culture Don’t get lost in all this Summer’s sports events or tourist spots such as The London Eye, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. London has a massive culture scene being the home of many museums and galleries such as the Victoria & Albert, Tate Modern (and Tate Britain), British Museum and The National Gallery. Free of admission this is a perfect way to spend an afternoon. (Check the exhibitions online before you come so you don’t miss anything!) If you like the sound of sweet tones, you will find a variety of classical music to musicals and live gigs during the summer. And if you want to laugh until you cry you wont have to walk for long in Soho until you find a comedy club.

Where to GO OUT

After a long day of shopping, culture and dining you might want to let your hair down. To enjoy a couple of well-made cocktails go to Experimental Cocktail Club in China Town. If you’re staying West, Beach Blanket Babylon in Notting Hill is where you should head first, followed by the tiki-bar Trailer Happiness, which is just around the corner. Other very local spots are the Westbourne and the Cow. If you’re staying East visit the secret Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town bar (tell them you’re there to see the Mayor to gain entry). For central roof-terrace bars take the lift up to Aqua or Kensington Roof Gardens and for beautiful and romantic view of London find your way to the riverside bars along the Themes.

Where to SHOP The British high street is renowned for a reason, offering up-to-the-minute trends from the catwalk for a fragment of the price. Go to Oxford Street to find all high-street there is and don’t miss Selfridge’s while you’re there. For those who want a dose of British brands, you must pop by Carnaby Street. If you want to indulge in high-end luxury brands cast an eye towards Sloane Square or Old Bond Street in Mayfair, or if you prefer cozy neighbourhood shops head towards Marylebone High Street and Westbourne Grove/Notting Hill (No, there is no blue door!). Make sure not to miss the numerous popular markets on the weekends, Borough Market for fruit and vegetable, Spitafields for young designer wear, Portobello for antiques and Columbia road for flowers. When looking for gifts to bring back overseas, a visit to Fortnum & Mason is quintessential! For over 300 years this six-floor Piccadilly store has kept its charm while sourcing and selling superb quality tea, coffee, chocolates and wines.

Where to EAT You often know how metropolitan a city is just by having a glance at the range of restaurants available – London doesn’t lack much in this field. Italian New York style Polpo and it’s newer siblings Polpetto and Da Polpo is best described as an Italian style tapas bar where you and your company can have an intimate but relaxed dinner. If you’re looking for something more traditional, head to Signor Sassi in Knightsbridge, for trendy Mexican, La Bodega Negra in Soho and for high class Chinese, Hakkasan in Mayfair are the places to be. To enjoy a traditional Sunday steak head to any local British pub. With the Queens Diamond Jubilee coming up, what better way to celebrate than to experience a traditional afternoon tea? The Berkeley Hotel offers a Prêt-à-Portea menu with cookies designed to resemble the latest catwalk items. On a warm summer day bring a blanket, some food and a bottle of nice wine to either Hyde Park, St James’s park or Primrose Hill.
