Absurd Theory On the 21st of July, Abhishek Roy, Srivats Ramaswamy and Prerna Misra from Class

11S2 represented school in an absurd theory competition. Each team had to come up

with an innovative and bizarre scientific theory and then prove it using logic,

reasoning, and data. Our team's theory was 'Natural death emerged due to the

evolution of sexual reproduction', which the team supported and defended well

against the opponents' questions. One team tried to disprove the Bible, one spoke

of time dilation, one said that Earth will be ruled by insects. Our team won the first

prize. Abhishek was also awarded the best interjector award for attacking the

opponents’ theories.

Young Achievers!

July

A Writer’s Journey at Oxford University

I was fortunate enough to get selected for doing a course in creative

writing at the Oxford University. The course lasted for 14 days, from

the 29th of June to the 12th of July. Students from all over the world

attended the course and we were accommodated in Somerville

College, the 38th college in Oxford University.

At the Gurgaon Open Badminton Championship, Adya

Bhargava of 6B won the singles title not only in the

Under-13 category, but also in Under-15. She will now

represent Gurgaon at the Haryana State Championship at

Kurukshetra from 30th July.

Page 14: Studio - The Shri Ram School (TSRS), Aravali Campus, Gurgaonsar.tsrs.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Newsletter_July2014.pdf · events shri conclave the shri conclave on 10th july,

There were 54 of us in the

16-17 age group. My

creative writing teacher

was Dr. Keiron Winn who

is a well-respected

professor and poet at

Oxford. We closely read

and analysed a number of short stories and poems written by

eminent authors and poets such as T.S Eliot and James Joyce. After

having read the poems and stories, we were assigned to write our

own short story and poem stealing themes, motifs and ideas from

the ones we analysed earlier. We also saw an open-air play, As You

Like It, and were again assigned to analyse and summarise the

eventful play in our own words and language. The academic level

was advanced and competitive but I was able to manage it

comfortably.

The course was much beyond academics and seminars; we had a lot

of free time to socialise, communicate and get to know students

from all over the globe. Every Wednesday, day trips to historic places

such as Blenheim place, Windsor Castle and The Pitts River Museum

were initiated. Every Saturday and Sunday, we were allowed to go to

the big parks in the University and play sports such as cricket,

football and rugby. We started our day at 6:30, had breakfast by 7:30

in the morning, lunch by noon and dinner by 6:30 in the evening.

After dinner we had some activity or the other planned out, which

included quizzes on topics such as sports, entertainment, British

history, world history and geography to name a few. We also had

heated debates on topics such as whether or not neurosciences

should be used as evidence during court regulations and whether or

Page 15: Studio - The Shri Ram School (TSRS), Aravali Campus, Gurgaonsar.tsrs.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Newsletter_July2014.pdf · events shri conclave the shri conclave on 10th july,

not Megacities are good for economic development and growth. The

course aimed at providing a college life to school students where we

study, communicate and get to know people from all over the globe

and have our bit of fun. I was fortunate enough to get to know great

people from over 10 nations in the world. Every Friday we had

formal dinners in the halls of Somerville College and Wadham

College where we were told to dress very neatly and formally. For

me, this course has really made a place in my heart as I really

enjoyed staying there, had a ton of fun and at the same time gained

immense knowledge in the subject I opted to study at the Oxford

Summer Courses.

Class 11 Daydreams

July saw Class 11 being given permission to daydream in class - provided a descriptive essay came in about the experience! Here are some gems:

“I started to tilt my head and

yawn out of boredom until I

suddenly saw Hitler walk

into my class ... I rubbed my

eyes in amazement and

suddenly i was outdoors

standing in a crowd ... I

looked up and saw a man

standing on a balcony - he

had blue eyes and was

wearing a military uniform. I

realised that the man was

Hitler waving to the crowd."

- Vaibhav Nanda of 11C1

Vinnie Nanda of 11H1 wrote mellifluously about soft

sand curling between her toes as she went on a marine

walk, with cool water washing over her, sea weed

caressing her cheeks and rainbow fish as her

companions.

Samaksh Khatri of 11C1 saved his favourite international

football team from annihilation by playing a key match as

their star player and saviour.

A Literary Bond

I glanced at the clock on

the wall for the eighth

time in the last quarter of

an hour. I tapped my foot

impatiently and glared at

the clock, silently willing it

to tick faster. The two-

hour poetry lecture had

laboriously reached the

half way mark and I was

seriously contemplating calling in sick and heading home. With much effort I tuned

back into what the professor was saying. He was monotonously going on and on about

Robert Frost and Edward Thomas. It was a rather cloudy day, with a light rain

splattering the windows. Perhaps it had been a day just like this one, all the way back in

1913, when one of the world’s greatest literary friendships was forged.

I could only imagine what it would have been like to be a writer in early 20th century

England, especially a soul as unstable and haunted as Edward Thomas. I could see

myself as him now, walking along with Frost on one of their famous walks. I felt the

leather brim of my black hat through the holes in my grass stained gloves, as I whirled

it uneasily from side to side. The flapping of weather stained coats, the rhythm of light

laughter and the smell of gunpowder fresh in the cool autumn breeze of the hunting

season. The dappled red and white corgi trotting along at my heels would let out an

occasional yelp of excitement. Or maybe the Englishmen back then kept hounds or Irish

setters. Anyway, the dog was scurrying ahead sniffing happily. I followed, eager with

anticipation as to what rare plant we might chance upon now. Alas! That bubbling tide

of energy was more than often dashed blunt against the hard, cold rocks of

disappointment. With the entire days search yielding no fascinating results, I was very

frustrated and had no qualms about airing my irritation. Frost just laughed, which,

needless to say, only heightened my feelings of annoyance.

Shyla Minocha 11H1

Page 19: Studio - The Shri Ram School (TSRS), Aravali Campus, Gurgaonsar.tsrs.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Newsletter_July2014.pdf · events shri conclave the shri conclave on 10th july,

This is how their days must have gone, I decided, until the fateful run in with the

groundskeeper. I felt my blood run cold with just the thought of the unpleasant

exchange. The keeper’s blotchy red face, the accusation of trespassing, the heated

conversation, the shotgun and then the single warning shot. With a deafening crack my

picture perfect world of rain-washed trees and sun kissed days was destroyed. A metallic,

dry taste in my mouth left my throat dry and my vision blurred. The feelings running

through my mind were innumerable; anger, fear, excitement, agitation, anxiety, but

most of all loathing. Self-loathing, for just backing away and not retaliating.

Perhaps that’s where the

seeds of indecision were

given their final boost. In

the years that followed, in

the shadow of the world’s

most devastating war, I

could scarcely make my

mind up for more than a

couple of hours. The

eternal internal struggle as

to whether I should fight

for my country or leave it,

the weariness of half-hearted explanations and the lines of poetry scribbled haphazardly

on different sheets of paper. Surely, when I first read The Road not Taken, it seemed to

be a most intimate message, at once careless and cruel and yet thoughtful and

encouraging…

A high-pitched ring shattered my blissful musing. I started upright in my seat and

noticed all the other students already leaving for their next class. I sighed and swung my

backpack over my shoulder and headed for the door.
