Let Rain Water Get to the Storm DrainsMelting snow and heavy spring rains can cause serious prob-lems. When water can’t be absorbed by open areas, becauseof streets, sidewalks and buildings, it is directed into stormdrains. The storm drains carry the water directly to localponds, and then to Poplar Creek. This prevents water poolingin the streets and flooding area homes. Please help keep ourstorm drains clear. Do not push leaves, grass clippings or other debris into the storm drains.

Coyotes in the SuburbsCoyote sightings are on the rise. Spring is when they are most active. These nocturnal animals want to avoidhumans, but some contact is unavoidable. Be careful driving at night. Keep an eye on small pets. Neverfeed these or other wild animals. Placing food out on the ground attracts bunnies and birds, as well as mice, squirrels, and raccoons. These smaller animals attract hawks, coyotes, and other dangerous predators.

Ask a Pharmacist Program at Hanover TownshipHanover Township, in partnership with CVS, is offering an Ask a Pharmacistprogram to help residents learn more about their prescriptions and potentialdrug interactions, as well as Medicare Part D options. We recently had the pleasure of attending graduation ceremonies for our fifthgrade DARE classes at Oakhill, Glenbrook, Sunnydale, Ridge Circle, andSt. John’s. Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) helps children learn how tosay “no” to drugs. It also gives students the skills and strategies to make betterlife choices. Children read essays regarding the impact the program had on theirlives, and how it informs them. I am always amazed by the honesty and insightour children show in expressing their appreciation for the program, and for thelessons learned. I would like to thank DARE Officer Matt Stastny for his dedi-cation and enthusiasm. Congratulations, graduates!

The summer season is right around the corner – and with summer, comes anumber of additional community-wide celebrations. We look forward to see-ing you at our annual Memorial Day ceremony on May 26, the 4th of Julyfireworks display at Dolphin Park, and, of course, please keep July 26through July 28 open for Summer Celebration. U-46 School NewsRaising the Bar on ISATSchool District U-46 has made greatstrides to align itscurriculum andinstruction to thenew Common CoreState Standards. This statewide edu-cation init iativewill better prepareour students for college and career readiness.

As part of the Common Core process, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) hasraised the bar on the performance expectations of the Illinois StandardsAchievement Test (ISAT) in Math and English for elementary and middle school stu-dents. These higher expectations will cause the number of students who meet andexceed standards to drop significantly. This year, some students who previouslyexcelled on the ISAT will instead show the need for improvement.

These new expectations mean that U-46 students and staff will have to build on theknowledge and capabilities they had in previous years. Schools will continue to identifystudents who need extra help on their road to academic success. The new expectationsalso pave the way for the State to replace the ISAT tests in Math and English LanguageArts with the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC)exams, which are scheduled to begin in the 2014-2015 school year.

Scholarly StudentsIn 2012, 262 students from School District U-46, including 32 from StreamwoodHigh School, were named Illinois State Scholars by the Illinois Student AssistanceCommission. These scholars rank in the top ten percent of high school seniors acrossthe State. U-46 continues to place the highest value on academic success for all stu-dents and has recently taken steps to expand access to advanced placement classes.

The BazingabotsA group of Eastview and Tefft seventh grade students recently competed in thePalatine regional of the First Lego League Robotics Tournament Series. The team, named the Bazingabots, received first place for their research project, whichinvolved the development of a custom golf tee for senior citizen golfers. The teamalso finished in the top three for their robot performance and technical design. TheBazingabots will go on to compete in the Illinois State tournament. Congratulationsand good luck!
