As a parent, you’ll be able to tell if your teen is misusing his/her cell

phone by the amount of time they are spending text messaging their

friends. Do they run to answer the phone/text, then hide out to respond

to it? Do you catch them talking or texting late at night or at times when they said they

would be doing something else?

What can you do? Check your phone bill. Most companies can provide an itemized list of

incoming and outgoing calls and text messages on your monthly statements. Make sure

you recognize the numbers on your statement, and if you don’t, ask your teen to identify

them.

What Sites Do Teens Visit For Music and Videos?

These sites expose teens to the world. They enable teens to access people living

anywhere in the U.S. or in foreign countries, as well as their peers from

school. It’s a place where they can create and showcase who they are

and also keep tabs on all of their friends. Unless under a hidden view or

setting, profile pages are open for all to see. But most of all, teens love

social networking sites because it’s their space. There is a sense of

empowerment attached to controlling a piece of their own world… and

this is typically a world where parents are not present.

Why Do Teens Love These Social Networking Sites?

What Are The Warning Signs Of Cell

Phone Misuse?

As teens spend more and more time online, listening to music and

watching online videos consistently rank in their top three online

activities. More than half of teens (52%) report listening to MP3s in

a given week, with an average listening time of more than four

hours per week.

While the majority of teens might be visiting sites like iTunes and

Rhapsody to legally download and listen to music, many teens are

still visiting illegal music-sharing sites that violate intellectual prop-

erty rights.

YouTube, a video sharing site where users can upload, view, and share video clips, is one

of teens’ four favorite and most visited sites (along with Google, MySpace, and Face-

book). Other than recommended guidelines, there are no barriers to what content is por-

trayed in those videos or who can view them. For example, if a teen were to go to You-

Tube and search for “drug”-related videos, the top 10 search returns have almost 47 mil-

lion views. The top-10 “marijuana”-related videos on YouTube have almost 30 million

views. The top-10 “weed”-related videos on YouTube have been viewed almost 25 million

times. And the top-10 “cocaine”-related videos on YouTube have been viewed about 25

million times.

Teens can also create, star in, and upload the content on video-sharing and music

download sites. For example, the video networking site with the highest concentration of

12-17-year-olds is Stickam.com, a hub for Webcams of people in their bedrooms.

Page 6 Volume 8 Issue 4

Teens are using their cell

phones in very creative

ways. Instead of passing

notes in class, they

sometimes send text

messages. In addition to

text messaging, teens can

also access the Internet and

download pictures, videos,

and music with their cell

phones. It’s an instant

source of information, from

finding out about the latest

parties to contacting

someone they might not

have permission to.

They can also receive

messages from anyone,

friend or not, as long as the

other person has the cell

phone number. This can

include spammers,

scammers, identity thieves,

online predators, and

cyberbullies.

Teens can also be alerted to

a text in very discrete ways,

either by downloading a ring

tone that is out of pitch

range of most adults or by

putting their phones on

vibrate. Newer cell phones

enable teens to capture the

moment with photos, ring

tones or short video clips –

a fun and mostly harmless

feature – except when

inappropriate images are

captured and shared for all

to see.

Some teens have even

gone as far as creating a

ring of contacts through text

messaging to make and

alert friends of social

gatherings and other

information.
