Dear friends,

If you get this beforeEaster Sunday, please note that weshall all be joining

together at Holton church for the Eastermorning service at 10 a.m. There will notbe a service at SSM that morning becausework is about to start on replacing thestolen lead from the roof at long last, andwe are not yet clear what the extent of thescaffolding will be. Please don't worry ifyou are getting married at SSM thissummer - it will all be over before the firstwedding of the year there.

I mentioned in last month's edition that Iwould like to set up a Carers' Group tohave coffee together once a month just sothat you know that you have somewhereelse to go and relax from your duties. Ihave not yet been able to find a day of theweek that suits everyone, so if you are acarer, please be in touch with me to let meknow that you would like to take part, andwe will see what we can do about sortingout some dates. Or just phone and comeand have a coffee and a chat by yourself!

Some of us had a wonderful trip toCambridge last month to attend Evensongat St John's College. Thank you to MartinO'Brien, our organist at Holton andRaydon, for borrowing a minibus totransport us there and back in the pouringrain for a feast of music and worship. Wehope to do it again in the Easter Term, andwould encourage even more of you to joinus; I will let you know the date well inadvance.

Here is a beautiful poem as an Easter gift, called 'Easter Wings' by George Herbert.

Lord, who createdst man in wealth and store,      Though foolishly he lost the same,            Decaying more and more,                  Till he became                        Most poore:                        With thee                  O let me rise            As larks, harmoniously,      And sing this day thy victories:Then shall the fall further the flight in me.

My tender age in sorrow did beginne      And still with sicknesses and shame.            Thou didst so punish sinne,                  That I became                        Most thinne.                        With thee                  Let me combine,            And feel thy victorie:         For, if I imp my wing on thine,Affliction shall advance the flight in me.

Happy Easter!

Editors Corner

Around this time of year the Quartet teamget together for our annual general meetingand last month we were able to confirm thatadvertising prices remain the same as lastyear. We are in the fortunate position ofhaving a completely full magazine thismonth, with no advertising slots empty. It’sgreat to know so many businesses aredoing well and want to advertise in theQuartet!

One other thing we talked about and set upwas our response to the new dataprotection regulation laws coming into forceat the end of May. Every organisation andbusiness has duties of safekeeping underthe new laws, and we have made sure thatall the personal information we hold aboutour advertisers and contributors ispassword protected on our computers andwe don’t pass on any personal informationwithout permission. Of course, being amagazine we are passing on names, addresses and phone numbers everymonth - it wouldn’t be a very usefulpublication without them! We want toassure you that this is only done in line withthe aims of the magazine, and as you wouldreasonably expect.

If you have any queries about our responseto Data protection, you are always welcometo email us at [email protected],or write to either Jane or Anne.

Here’s hoping you have a good read thismonth!

Anne and Jane,

Articles for the Quartet are included if wehave room, and if, in the opinion of theeditors, they are of general interest to ourreaders. Please remember all articles willbe subject to editing. We prefer you tocontact us via email where possible.

Stratford St Mary Institute Committee

Community First RespondersCFR’s are trained volunteers who aredispatched by the ambulance service to lifethreatening emergencies in localcommunities. The volunteers normally workwithin a radius of 8 minutes drive from theirlocation but depending on circumstancesthis could be further. They can normally getto a casualty before an ambulance can getthere, assess the patient and start possiblelife saving treatment immediately. If thesituation changes the CFR can updateAmbulance Control to give them an updatedassessment of the patient.

The Stratford St Mary area is covered by aCFR bag supplied by Stratford St MaryParish Council. This bag is presently usedby 2 volunteers in Stratford St Mary and onein Langham. The area is also covered byother volunteers with different bags fromDedham, East Bergholt, Manningtree,Brantham and Bradfield.

A volunteer can be on call whenever theywant, if you are logged off duty, you do notget called.

At the moment the Stratford St Mary bag isnot utilised as much as it could be and Iwould like to improve this. Ideally I would likesome volunteers in Stratford St Mary tocomplete the training and then become CFRfor Stratford St Mary and the surroundingvillages. The more hours we have the bagactive the better cover we have for ourselves.

If you are interested in finding out moreabout becoming a CFR please contact me(Peter Dawson) on 07775 667753 and I canlet you know more about it.

Saying ‘Yes’ could save your life

A hard-hitting campaign has been launchedin Suffolk to encourage people to giveconsent for their patient records to be madeaccessible to health and care professionalsin the event of an emergency.

In an emergency situation it is likely that theperson treating you will only have access toyour basic health information.

But if you have consented to share yourpatient record every health professionalcalled upon to treat you will be able toaccess to more details about your health. Not only will this allow them to deliver themost effective treatment, it could mean thedifference between your life and death. Thehealth professional will always ask yourpermission before looking at your record, except in an emergency.

Most people have a Summary Care Record(SCR) containing basic medical informationwhich is created from their GP record andincludes details of the medicines you takeand any allergies you might have. This is theonly information that any health professionalwho needs to treat you in an emergency orout-of-hours setting will have access to.

However, by consenting to share your healthrecord, potentially vital extra information canbe added to the SCR, such as the reasonsyou take certain medication, any diseasesyou might have and your end of life carepreferences. It's easy to agree to share –you just need inform staff at your localsurgery that’s what you want to do.Alternatively, there’s a form you can fill in,sign and return to your GP practice.

Fair Trade CoffeeMorningOur Fair Trade coffeemorning on February 27thexperienced another“first”! Well, actually twofirsts in one! Firstly we

knew that the builders would be hard atwork with the repairs to the Chancel Arch,so scaffolding was adorning the Chancel, dust covers everywhere and no entry intothe aisle. This didn’t affect our coffeemorning though but what did was the “Beastfrom the East”!It was bitterly cold and the snow was gettingdeeper, it looked so lovely but not safe forthose who drive to our event. Swift phonecalls were made to tell everyone to stay athome, the library van was another casualtynot being able to get through.Us lucky locals were able to walk to enjoythe usual great coffee, no Frinton goodiesthough as they too were victims of the“Beast from the East”Well, I’m sure our next Fair Trade coffeemorning on March 27th will go ahead withnone of these trials and tribulations! Springshould be here so looking forward to seeingeveryone again and remember we start at10am as the library van comes earlier.

Many thanks,Wendy Mumford 01473 312123

Raydon and District Gardening Club

38th Year

Having passed the “Spring Equinox” weall expect warmer days, however jottingdown these notes on St Patrick’s Day 17thMarch and glancing out of window wehave about 2” of lying snow and the windis very cold. The early flowers have theirheads bowed or completely covered. Ourtemperatures seem to go from oneextreme to another very quickly and it’sbeen like this all winter. Nature must findit hard to adapt but it seems to cope. Birdsare nest building, grass growing, flowersblooming, tree & shrub leaf buds areswelling and I guess animals coming outof hibernation to enjoy the “Spring” so it’sall starting once again. We gardeners will all soon be busyplanting seeds & plants, cutting lawns, weeding etc but we must make time toview the wonders of each month. Our February meeting held on 22nd wasa very interesting and informative eveningspent with guest speaker Ian Tinton. Hissubject was Quality garden alternativecomposts and how we can all change ourdependency on using peat basedproducts. We covered wool mix, groundup stone & volcanic rock which contain allthe necessary minerals for plant health &vigour. Not the cheapest to buy but youdo not need so much and I for one havepurchased some so will trial it out this yearto see how it compares.April 7th of course means “Spring Show”once again. We have opened it up to nonmembers as well but they must live in therestricted areas so check club rules inshow schedule and if appropriate have ago. It’s a traditional village event runningsince 1980 so please give us your support.

There are classes for adult & children withsilverware and cash prizes to be won, butmost of all join in and enjoy. Children bringalong mum & dad and perhapsgrandparents along to the afternoon viewing.Refreshments, prize giving, & raffle to finishoff the day. Also in April our next meeting on the 26thcome and listen to our special guest NatalieFinch from East Bergholt (our ClubPresident) on “Sweet are the uses ofadversity”We are now taking bookings for our coachouting on Sunday 17th June to GrimsthorpeCastle & Gardens. Members £31.00 pp withGuests/non members £34.00 pp, allinclusive. As usual we stop on route forcoffee etc and we hold a raffle on the coachbefore we depart for home. Your committeelooks forward to meeting you at all clubevents throughout the year.
