Dear friends,
It is not yetChristmas as Iwrite this, but I amthinking of all the
days to come that I hope, by the timeyou read this, you will have enjoyed, and of the start of a new year that Ihope will bring peace in our nation andin our world.
We had a slight blip with ourChristmas Carol Services on 10December owing to an unexpectedlyheavy fall of snow. So, for SSM andRaydon, whose services that eveninghad to be cancelled, we are putting ona very old tradition of having EpiphanyCarol Services on 7 January instead. The Epiphany is when the Churchcelebrates the visit of the Wise Menor Magi to the Christ Child inBethlehem. It's also the date whenthe Eastern Orthodox Churchcelebrates Christmas because theystill adhere to the old calendar, whenour 6 January would be their 25December. So in effect we shall becelebrating Christmas with them byhaving our Epiphany services - 10a.m. at SSM and 5 p.m. at Raydon;do come and join us to sing the oldEpiphany carols that we don't oftenhear any more.
Lent will creep up on us very fast in2018 - Ash Wednesday falls on 14
February this year, and as usual weshall have the traditional AshWednesday service at 6.30 p.m. thatevening, this year at SSM. At thatservice I shall sign everyone with thesign of the cross made in ash on theirforeheads. Carrying the cross in ashon your forehead is a sign to everyonethat during Lent we think about whatwe have done wrong in the previousyear, and ask God's forgiveness.
Then, looking ahead, Bishop Mike iscoming on 13 May at 3 p.m. to confirmall those in the Deanery who havedecided that they would like to takethat step further forward in theirChristian faith. Confirmation meansdeclaring in front of everyone that youhave taken Jesus as your Saviour andthat you want to live your life by hisprinciples in future. In a beautifulceremony, which renews the vowsthat were taken on your behalf atbaptism, the Bishop will receive youinto the Church. From then on you willbe able to take Communion with otherChristians wherever you go in theworld. You will need to follow a courseof instruction before you can beconfirmed, so please let me know ifyou would like to take this bold newstep in your life.
This comes with many blessings for avery happy 2018.
Rosalind Paul, Rector
Welcome

As I write this editorial, it’s one week beforeChristmas and quite difficult to get into themind set of next year! I’ve still got a headfull of things to get and places to be, but itwill soon be over and we start the yearlycycle all over again. We do hope however, that as you read this, you will be able to findeverything you need to know to help kickstart 2018.
Most of the Christmas events are over now,but you might like to join Raydon for aspecial Epiphany Carol Service on Sunday7th January. More details on page 12. Thiscame about as the regular Carol Servicescheduled for December was snowed off.

Weather update
At the time of writing, we are nearly at theend of another year so what has 2017brought..
Apart from January, February and theSpring months of March, April and May, allhad warmer than average temperatures.June was also warmer than usual, averagemaximum temperature 22.5C, minimum14.4C, total hours of sunshine approximate246 hours.
However, the promise of a barbecuesummer was not fulfilled The temperatureswere only average for July and belowaverage for August so taking the threemonths together, we can say it was a typicalBritish Summer! September was nothing towrite home about but October was warm, maximum temperature 16.5C.
The average maximum temperature forNovember was 10.5C which is slightlyabove the norm but a sharp drop fromOctober. Temperatures at the time ofwriting are below average for Decemberwith a fall of snow on the 10th causingchaos in many parts of the country.
Rainfall statistics are quite interesting.Taking the period from January to
November 2017, total rainfall for the periodI measured was 383 millimetres (average550 millimetres assuming 50 millimetres[2inches] each month). Taking the periodDecember 2016 to November 2017,rainfall amounted to 391 millimetres(average 600 millimetres) In fact, with onlya total of 7.7 millimetres, December 2016was the driest December I had everrecorded. Reservoirs are dependent onwinter rainfall to top up levels so there wasconcern in the event of a summer droughtdue to the significant rainfall deficit. However, rainfall during the summermonths saved the day. Total rainfall forAugust amounted to 73 millimetres(2.91inches), with a record 51 millimetresbetween the 8th and 10th of the month).August followed by July were the twowettest months of the year.
The Spring of 2017 was marvellous forflowers and blossoms owing to the drywarm conditions which prevailed and theSummer rains did wonders for the cornand root crops, a good year forhorticulturalists and farmers with a dryAutumn helping the sowing for next year’scrops.
October 16th was the 30th anniversary ofthe so called hurricane which uprootedtrees and caused tremendous devastationin our region, probably a one in a hundredyear’s event. What never received somuch attention in a year of extremes wasthe severe cold spell from 9th January to19th January 1987. For 8 days, thetemperature hardly rose above freezingpoint. I quote from my records. January12th max -7C min -10C wind NE heavysnow; Jan 13th max -4C min -7C, heavysnow showers; Jan 14th max -3C min-5,5C wind E, almost strong to gale, massive snow drifts, all transport virtuallybrought to a halt.

‘Take … and take just a littlebit more’: survival of our NHS
A front-page newspaper headline of 7th
December 2017, ‘Patients hit by shortageof drugs as prices soar’, motivated thisarticle and particularly within the context ofhaving worked in and for the NHS foralmost 40 years. The headline focused onsome important drugs (anastrazole to treatbreast cancer; quetiapine to treat a rangeof mental health disorders; some anti-epileptic drugs) that, in their generic (non-branded) form, were in short-supply. Thishad necessitated the NHS (i.e. thegovernment) to pay for their brandedequivalents, which are inherently andusually considerably more expensive thanthe generic forms. The estimated cost ofthis practice to the NHS is >£50 million permonth. There is real substance behind thismedia-embellished story. Our government, through agenciesincluding the Medicines and Healthcareproducts Regulatory Agency (MHRA), hasto ensure drugs are effective and safe andthis includes reviewing their licences andquality. There is always the risk that ageneric drug may be sub-standard, andtherefore ineffective or unsafe (or both),because of the many different internationalpharmaceutical manufacturers that makegeneric drugs. This is in contrast to abranded form which is only made by onemanufacturer, until its patency expires.Predictably as the pharmaceutical industryis a business, it has an inherent tendencyto exploit the NHS and thereby contributeto its current parlous state.Increasing drug-costs will continue to be amajor problem within the NHS. Advancesin the understanding of diseases, including, but not exclusively cancer and dementia, will generate new and more effective drugsto treat them, but at a cost. This alsoapplies to more sophisticated and targetedinvestigations and surgical procedures, allof which will stretch both existing but alsocurrently-planned NHS-funding.
Life-expectancy is also increasing, throughout the age spectrum; the survivalrate of babies born extremely prematurely(22-24 weeks gestation, the ‘normal’ being37-40 weeks) is now over 50% and thepredicted average life-expectancy of ahealthy teenager is approaching 90 years.Increased life-expectancy inevitably costsmoney (‘life at all costs’), costs that will haveto be met by both the NHS and social care. The final issue in what may be the ‘perfectstorm’ for the NHS is the public’s approachto, and lack of responsibility for their ownlifestyle and its impact, directly or indirectly,on their neighbour, community and country. It is likely that many, probably a slightmajority, consider what they eat, drink, smoke, inject and don’t do in terms ofexercise, doesn’t matter, or they don’t care,or both – because the NHS will be there forthem, to ‘bail them out’. This perception isnot credible and is un-tenable, if we want tomaintain the principles, practice and veryexistence of the NHS. The realistic optionsare limited and will have to include increasedtaxation, ideally directly through income taxcontributions, but also through other meansthat may well have to reflect how people livetheir lives. We are all responsible for the fateof our truly, madly remarkable NHS.

Fair Trade CoffeeMorningDecember 5th. Anothergrey and miserable startfor our “Festive” FairTrade coffee morning.
There was nothing grey or miserable aboutthe lovely sights, sounds and smells fromwithin the Church though! Where should Istart? Well, what about the windowsills fullof Christmas arrangements and candles?Or the beautiful organic Christmas tree sokindly donated to the Church byBlackstump Cottage? Maybe the aroma ofour super Fair Trade coffee? Or what aboutour fabulous “Frinton” sausage rolls andcheese scones? Could it even be the trustywarm mince pies loved by many?I think it was all of those things which madethe morning a very special event, along withtwo other great surprises! The first was“thank you” gifts to several of us for all ourefforts in connection with the stall and theafternoon teas. I think we all enjoy what wedo, but thanks and gifts are great to receive. To top all that was my 7 week old GreatGrandson arriving for his first “Fair Tradecoffee morning” He loved the tree and allthe lights and of course all those cuddles.Well, we’ll be back again on January 2ndwhen the crib, Christmas arrangements andtree will all still be on view so do pop alongto have a look and enjoy our coffee and achat. Our times change very slightly to10am-11.15am due to the library van’s newtimetable of 9.50-10.30 so as ever a hugethanks for your continued support and avery Happy New year.

Sadly we had to cancel our carol service onDecember 10th due to the nasty weatherconditions on the day of heavy snow & icewhich was forecast to continue for a fewdays and made difficult driving conditionsespecially in the dark. Raydon and District Gardening Club
38th Year
Firstly may I wish all garden club members& friends “A Happy New Year” as it’s now2018. At the beginning of a New Year weas gardeners are hopefully full of optimismand therefore start looking forward to thenew “Springtime” which will be only a fewweeks away. It’s now time to keep a sharplook out for the first snowdrops andaconites as these are the herald to Springoften appearing around mid month. Theylook so wonderful in the winter sunshineand certainly help to cheer us all upespecially on the more gloomy days asyou know things will soon be on the turnfor the better. Once we start back to ourfirst meeting in February the days will begetting lighter (6am – 6pm) and whilst wecan still get harsh weather hopefully it willnot last too long. Now in January it’s agood time to look at seed catalogues andtry to plan ahead, also time to purchaseseed potatoes, start off those sweet peaseeds indoors, and I also like to cover theRhubarb crowns with about 12” to 18” ofstraw with a few pea sticks to hold in placeto prevent wind blowing it away. I add tothe straw as the crop grows through. If youare unable to do gardening (for what everreason) there are always many placesopen to the public to visit and see theirspecial “winter gardens” so you canenjoy the spectacle without the hard work.Marks Hall Essex, & Anglesey AbbeyCambridgeshire have always been a greatday out in previous years. As a gardening club we are now in our 38th
year and your committee is pleased toreport we are thankfully in a healthyfinancial position thanks to your support, however we have to remain aware that
costs keep going up (Speakers & Cupengraving) mostly so we have decided toincrease membership by 50 pence. Thismeans for 2018 it’s now £12.50 pp & subsare now due if not already paid. This coversyou for 5 indoor meetings, and socialevening with AGM + refreshments. Anyguests will also pay an increased fee (firstfor 8 years) @ £2.50 on the night. Outsidelocal garden visits in May & July we normallypay a small fee each to a charity of ownerschoice. We will be running another coachouting in June, venue and cost to be advisedin February. Note:- Our "Spring Show” willbe week after Easter on Saturday 7th April.Your committee looks forward to meetingyou all again along with any new memberswho will be joining us on the first meeting for2018, to be held in the village hall (OldPrimary School building) on Thursday 22nd
starting at 7.30pm. Subject to be confirmedin February quartet.

From Chernobyl Children’sLife Line & Charity ShopNeedham Market
On December 3rd we collected ourChristmas Group from Gatwick airport. Ofthe children that had never been to the UKthey all said; “England is lovely” a soon asthey got off the plane!
This is going to be a very exciting monthfor the children who have not only neverbeen away from home but have neverexperienced Christmas before either.
After the children return home at the endof the month I will be leaving for Belarusfor our Father Frost Program. As previousChristmas parcels have been returned orjust not arriving at all a friend and I decidedthis year to go to Belarus to deliver thempersonally as the Belarusian equivalent to25th December is 7th January. Havingintended to just take presents in ourpersonal luggage we asked if anyone elsewould be interested in sending a presentto a child who would receive nothing forChristmas and we were amazed andtouched by the response. We are nowtaking 150 presents to needy children andwill deliver to 39 families in three days plushold a party for the children that we will beunable to reach during that time. We willbring back photos and updates after thetrip to share with everyone who has sokindly contributed to this program. A verybig thanks must also go to those peoplewho have sponsored part of the tripallowing us to be able to take this manypresents to the children and also to leavegifts for those in the local hospital.
We are now looking towards the summergroup visit and would ask anyoneinterested in hosting who we have not yetspoken to, to get in touch now as we haveto start processing the invitation to the
authorities in Belarus by January 2017. Thechildren will be with us for four weeks from1st to 29th July. All that is needed is aminimum of a mattress to sleep on and aloving home with people who care,Financial circumstances are immaterial.Age is not a barrier - single parentsconsidered, families may or may not stillhave their own children at home. Hosts areable to follow their own occupation/interestsas the children meet at least 4 days a weekMon-Fri 8.30 to 4.30 and helpers are onhand to collect or look after children at othertimes if needed.
We are very aware that there are now moreCharitable causes than ever all needingsupport. I would like to take this opportunityto thank everyone who supports us, youmay think you only do a little but without youwe could not survive.
Wishing you all very Merry Christmas andmay 2018 bring you everything you wishfor.
